Grampian Highlander Railtour at Dundee 2024

Class 50 English Electric type 4 Diesel locomotives built by Vulcan Foundry works in 1967 and 1968 starting D400 series and later British Rails became class 50 and name after Royal Navy Ships. With 16 cylinder and 2,700 horsepower diesel engines to work on mainline express passengers on the West Coast main line Crewe and Scotland climbing Shap and Beattock involving Double Header, Western region from Paddington to Oxford, Bristol, Derby, Paighton, Plymouth and Penzance after the hydraulics train withdrawn and before High Speed Train in 1979 and south east from Waterloo to Exeter.
Nickname Hoovers because of the distinctive sound made by the inertial air-filters with which they were originally fitted. They ended mainline service in 1994, and the total 18 of the class were preserved.
