I think you should prefer hard drive over usb pendrive. Because the transfer speed of USB is max upto 10-20mbps and because of this limited speed the gameplay will be sometimes laggy and the cutscenes in the game will lag on the other hand the data transfer speed of hard drive makes game more smooth and less laggy . May correct me if i am wrong but thats all i know because i too use external hard disk for my Playstation 2
