EVERYONE Should Make a Wooden Sword: Easy Project
Вставка

- Today in the shop I am showing you how to make a wooden longsword, designed with historic dimensions from Ewart Oakeshott's book History of the Medieval Sword. I use a piece of black walnut and profile the blade and handle, then grind in the fuller before grinding the bevels. Next I cut out and design the guard and show you an easy way to attach it to the handle without having to slide it along the blade like a typical sword guard. Last thing you do is wrap the handle with leather and oil it. This is a fun version of a wooden longsword based off of a type XIII and XVIII.

Now THAT...... is a damn pretty sword. Loving your content.
Thank you. We really dig your channel too!
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship thanks! We should colab at some point😁
Nothing better than seeing a grown man’s smile after he creates his own sword. Truly amazing video and inspiring me to make my own as well!
This is amazing - I used this guide to make my first sword yesterday! I think this is the start of a great hobby... When you said you made it for your daughter, my thought was "this is a good dad skill and I need it so I'm ready"
Nice dude
Yes! This was the sword I wish my Dad made me as a kid, so I’m glad you’ve got the skill banked for the future.
Yo
I work with wood at my job, on my free time I used junk 1x4's and made makeshift little swords. I wanted to know how to do it better!
Edit: I made them for my two daughters, they are much like me when I was a kid :D
Such a fun project, I will be making some of these for my kids ( and myself). Thanks for the video!
Hi Dustin. Nice to see you my friend. Good at wood, good at metal…. The complete man! Congratulations, nice sword my friend.
👊 thanks Miguel.
I made my first sword back in April/May, and I’ve made 5 more since. I’m preparing to make another one and since I’ve been having issues with a few of the others, I’ve decided to do some research. As I watch this I keep thinking “why didn’t I think of doing it that way?” Thank you for your help!
Thanks for watching. Glad I was able to help.
Would be great if you could make cool sheath for the sword
Watch out for the next video.
4 videos later.. lol@@TheArtofCraftsmanship
@@rockinHurley777 🤷🏼♂️😂
Paint them and you can have an amazing showpiece. There are many paints that make wood or any material look like metal.
Like what?
Gorgeous workmanship - and excellent video!
Thank you
I suggest epic workshops channel as they have made wooden swords also. Very informative 👍
Gonna try this tomorrow to make a rapier blade, a friend of mine is 3d printing the hilt (too many twists and curves!). We bought a massive plank of wood and this is going to be my first attempt at anything of the sort ever. Wish me luck!
Awesome! Hope it goes/went well.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship Went pretty well! Barely got them done in time haha
thank you, this will help me make mine
Absolutely brilliant Dustin, that wood is fabulous. Thank you
Beautiful. Love the fuller. The whole stack looks great. Im inspired to have a go .
Thank you Alan. Go for it.
My dad did this for me whem I was a kid! Bringing back memories!
I love that.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship Yours are quite a bit fancier! Thanks again for these videos!
I Made a wood claymore with my dad! It had a rebar through the hilt and into the blade (the whole thing was 5ft tall!). It ended up weighing the same as if it were real! it was a blast and it looks awesome!
Definitely going to make your template too!
Definitely a fun project
Very cool video! Thank you for sharing.
Perfect, now I need a complete woodworking shop!
❤
I know it can seem intimidating but, all of this can be done with hand tools. A knife, a saw and a good wood file with plenty of sand paper can accomplish everything shown in this video. It will take time but it can be done. Happy woodworking.
😁
Great job! Your sword is simple in construction but EXTREMELY well made. Really enjoyed watching your God-given skill in action.
It need a bunch of machinery..
Very fun!
By the way, great looking project!!👍👍👍✝️
Thanks👊
I don’t have a great belt sander. Just a little disc/belt combination. But what I do have is planes. Thinking I can do the fuller with finger planes. Start the blade bevels on the band saw and finish with a block or jack plane. Should really cut down on the dust too.
Now that is the outlook on making things that I love to hear.
Use a router or a curved head chisel
And i'm sitting over here carving one with a knige out of a log😅 love your work!
That’s one way to do it😂. Thanks.
Сколько таких брёвен я искромсал в детстве! Хорошо, что у меня ещё был рубанок (правда, такой же игрушечный, как деревянные мечи 😀).
Awesome!
Well done!
Thank you
Id love to do this and do a shield.
that was hilarious........I love it...................Great Craftsmanship
Thanks Billy.
I Love This It's Awesome, I bought myself a wooden training sword today and I will be working out with it.
Right on!
The project is great 👍👍
Thank you.
That's really cool!
Thanks cuz 😉😁
Groovy.
Best of luck sir
That’s really nice thanks 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Im planning to make a dragon slayer from berserk.
I think you should open your own wood working business
Wouldn’t it be faster and easier to cut the edge bevel on a table saw set at the appropriate angle?
Sure. You could do it that way too.
Nice Sword
Thanks
Hell Yeah
Nice video and nice job!
I'm making a wooden sword for casting a bronze age sword but it would be definitely better and faster with the right(Electric )tools.(doing it all with handtools)
I'm saving some money to buy more Electric tools.
Thats a great idea. I’d love to see how it turns out.
Hi! I was starting to make a couple of these and was not sure about the right wood to use. How thick was the blade? And, about the wood, I was oriented on using beech, but I saw that spruce hardwood is cheaper. Is it too soft and should I go on beech or is spruce still ok for the job?
I would suggest using a hard wood, for added durability. They can be made from soft woods, but they will dent and possible break easier. I start with 3/4” thick staves.
Hello from Denmark. Wonderful video and sword 😊 But what is the spray you use with the glue?
It’s an accelerator that makes the glue dry nearly instantly. This typically comes with CA glue when you buy it.
Quick question, how wide is the blade? as in, from the guard
It’s 2” wide at the guard. Time stamp 2:32 has a quick drawing with the measurements.
Great Video and very relaxing Soundtrack. What Music did you use?
Thanks! We play and record our own music for the channel.
What grinder do you use or recommend? I need to upgrade
Both of mine are House Made 2x72’s and they’re great. Also, if you’re able to weld, you can get the kit, and build it yourself, which saves a ton of money.
How did you determine the thickness of the blade as you came to the point on the end
I grind the blade to the blade profile shape, then grind the bevels toward the edge line, drawn down the center of the edges, and match that with grinding down to the center line on the flat. When get toward the point it’ll naturally start to thin the blade, but you may need to redraw the center line on the flats, or eyeball a straight spine.
Hope that explains it.
how long did this take to make? Im thinking of making one but I'm working with a time constraint.
Not very Long. If I was hustling, I could easily make one in 1 1/2-2 hours.
Thanks. I only have about 10 work hours left at school so I have to work diligently. This is an amazing idea.
Have you compared the balance with a real sword with similar dimensions? Is it more on the blade heavy side or hilt heavy side?
I have not, but I would assume it’s blade heavy, without a weighted pommel. 👍🏼
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship Thank you! I'd like to build a few and trying to find a way to make it more balanced. Thanks for the inspiring video.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship As I'm trying to build a wooden sword and attempt to have the balance closest to a real sword, I do think I'm going to use a weighted pommel.
Black walnut?! That's an expensive sword here!
It sure is pretty too 😁
Using a router would make a perfect fuller.
What's the spray and whatever you wiped on by hand?
I think the only thing I sprayed was the accelerator for the CA glue.
Increibles ¿que madera usas?
1:09 black walnut
If you want them to look more like real swords you should check Adam Savage's videos on the channel Adam Savage's Tested,he has three about wooden swords and how to make them more real with aluminum tape
Instructions unclear, I ended up restoring power to Rome.
😂
im making the dragonslayer from berserk
Sweet
can i order one of these for 50$?
As much as that is a deposit for a house, Id still like one. But, in the end, I dont think they can be road registerable anymore (only units already in Australia and registered can remain registered)?
What does the wd40 do
If you are referring to what I was spraying on the super glue, it’s was not WD, it’s an activator, that speeds up the glue drying to seconds.
Old tools
Not dust collection
Small and crowded workshop
Hey, just like my set up!
😁👍🏼
Can you give me one its so cool to try
Give it a go Loraine.
Why didn't you at least epoxy the edge of the blade to make sure it break like the other one?
Thanks. I’m not sure what you’re suggesting. Are you saying put a coat of epoxy on the outside of the blade? That’s an idea, but then it gets more complicated than I want for this project. Remember, the goal is to be able to make it quick for fun, and if it breaks, you make another. That being said, there are loads of other things that could be done to add interest and longevity overall if someone is interested.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanshipcould you please give a couple tips on how to make them more durable?
@AnamTahirdar could try oiling with lindseed or danish and following the age old addge one a day for a week once a week for a month once a month for a year and once a year although i dont know if that much is actually necessary maybe 4 or 5 coats would be enough
this is going to suck to make. First project. I have to at least try
Yes! It’s such a fun “sword” to play with, and make.
This istrong ? Can be used to hit stuff and dont break ? And what Kind of stuff
This can hit anything. That being said, it’s supposed to be an easy sword to make, …and remake if it breaks.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship wrong - i want this to last long
I can't...
Well not everyone has a workshop in their house
Thanks true.
If you have a jigsaw and a palm sander this is possible, just takes longer
Alternatively, get a knife and couple other carving tools, then do it by hand. Better equipment usually only makes the work faster, not exclusively possible.
Anyone else see the sparks from the bandsaw guides? Cool swords...just saying. Sparks and sawdust = meh
Yeah, those band saw blade guides need replacing. It freaked me out too.
Who else is here just to see what they did wrong
What did you find?
"Easy project"
*Proceeds to use two thousand plus dollars worth of tools and machinery to make it*
Hm yes very easy and accessible
Great thing is you don't need the fancy tools for this project. Alternative tools are mentioned throughout the video. You can do it. We believe in you.
Also, my band saw was bought 2nd hand for 75, and the grinder was free to me, but let’s say a high estimate of 800 for the kit of parts to build your own Revolution from House Made. $875 worth of tools. As easy as that 😁.
Dont have all those tools tho
Use a knife?
Crafting wise this is top notch, design wise.. Maybe not spend that much time getting the shapes all nice and interesting and then smother the same color over the whole piece? hahahaa. Just the two cents of an educated designer.
Agreed 👍🏼
I'm sorry I'm sure you build really nice stuff..but I couldn't finish your video after hearing you say it doesn't have to be perfect. I try to do my absolute best when making something. Also with math and instruments, there's honestly no reason a piece shouldn't measure true in the end.
Thanks for your feed back.
