CLOUD ATLAS (2012) Revisited - Sci-Fi Movie Review (Tom Hanks & Halle Berry)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2022
- 2012’s Cloud Atlas blew a lot of minds when it came out. Directed by Lana & Lily Wachowski plus Tom Tykwer, the generation-spanning omnibus was a cerebral epic that tried to do something distinct and different with the sci-fi genre, just as the Wachowski’s had done thirteen years previously with The Matrix. Based on the novel by David Mitchell and boasting a cast that included Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant and more - all in multiple roles - the movie flopped at the box office, but since then it’s managed to gain something of a cult following. So join us as we dig into this underrated epic on this edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw!

Absolutely magnificent movie! Hard to believe many people have no idea about it....
Look at society. Society makes dumb people famous and very intelligent people get “canceled “ 🤔
So the hate for this film is not surprising.
I watched this after a intense mushroom I trip I had, there was so many parallels.
Especially playing on cable so much
**@life for sale**........l am searching the internet for interesting films...and I feel the same way ......something must be wrong, when marketing fails like this.......or maybe I am getting old......
@@angelareele858 as the age progress less and less things make sense in life. We must be surrounded by bots with bad taste in music and video.... I try to explain it in this way, otherwise my faith in humanity will get lost forever.
I absolutely love this movie, It's a masterpiece that is very misunderstood. Unfortunately it is the kind of movie you have to see multiple times to truly understand
Absolutely. I so agree.
I dont agree i hated it and never understood it and was so lost and saying to my self what hell are they saying can they not talk like normal people and not like robots and I never liked the matrix movies so overated i watch bill and ted excellent adventure from 1989 inteed or anything from the awsome 1980s💜💜💜💜💜
Im pretty sure its just not a good movie. If it was cream it had plenty of time to rise to the top.
Reviewers too.. I've seen reviews where they didn't even make the reincarnation connection.. they were oblivious. Wow. I thought the film makers made it pretty obvious.
@@treborkroy5280 It's overly ambitious.
I’ve watched Cloud Atlas well over a dozen times, someday it will truly become a cult classic!
I heard there was a 6 hour director’s cut that is absolutely amazing. I wonder if it will ever get released..
Someone else commented that it is 4 hours. Not sure whom to believe.
Id love to see that. I really like long movies but like the original Dune movie rumours will abound.
Such an incredibly underrated work of art, this movie is! The soundtrack, brings tears to my eyes instantaneously, every time I revisit the movie. The performances, the sets, the effects, everything showed the beautiful soul of this movie.
This was one of the movies that popped up on my feed a number of times before I eventually watched it on Netflix. It was one of those movies were you go in, knowing nothing about it and truly go on a journey throughout. I absolutely adore it.
I first saw Cloud Atlas a week before I had surgery in 2015 (saw it on Netflix). When my pal stayed with me the night I was released from the hospital, I told her about the movie. We watched it, and I saw that it moved her as much as it had moved me. At some point, it was removed. I was heartbroken.
I just noticed this past weekend that Netflix has added it back on, I'm on my third viewing of it. It's absolutely fantastic and the best movie a lot of people have never seen. 💖
Might be my favorite movie of all time!! It’s so unique and the entire spirit of the thing is somehow challenging and soothing at the same time. Amazing movie!!
I genuinely believe "Cloud Atlas" is the best film of this century. Thanks so much for making this video!
I love this film not only for it's uniqueness but the way it takes my imagination. The whole point of films is to take you on a journey but this takes me on number of journeys throughout. All the cast played an amazing act. Showcasing their true acting abilities. I wished for another with the same cast and directors
This is an absolutely underrated gem. It doesn't always work but credit it for trying something new and different.
I was lucky enough to watch this film in the same theater with the entire cast present and it was an honor because Cloud Atlas is a masterpiece. Sure some parts take time to understand fully but it doesn’t hold your hand.
I fell in love with this film instantly! So sad it isn't more beloved
It's my favorite! I still cry every time I see the part where Sixsmith and the other guy climb the tower at the same time and Sixsmith is looking for him. I always wish he just says, "Hey I'm over here!" and they live happily ever after and he doesn't blow his brains out :/
Also, if you like the film you should read the story(stories). It's a quick and easy read and I even found it free online by googling it. It changes some things but I could easily see the film while reading it so the Wachowski brothers did a very good job translating it to film. Some of the changes I disagree with because they make it more confusing like having the slave character be black and owned by American slavers in the Western Pacific/Polynesian region which doesn't make sense historically. In the story the slave is a Moriori Pacific islander enslaved by the Maori (New Zealand Polynesian people) who in actual history had conquered and enslaved the Moriori. I think they thought the audience would be confused by a character who was a slave but wasn't black which is kind disappointing that they don't trust the audience to understand the nuances of history.
One of the first movies I saw when I moved to LA. I love this film. So underrated.
Look in most circumstances having a person play a race they are not is kinda shitty when you could have cast a actor of that race. But Cloud Atlas is a genuine exception. The whole point of these actors playing these different roles is that one of the themes of the film is reincarnation and hopefully doing a better job with your next life this time around. Keeping the same actresses and actors lets the audience know what soul's progress we are watching. The plot itself with its six interwoven narratives is already a lot to take in. Without some sort of indicator of what soul we were watching in what period, it would make that even more baffling. It's a solid carry through that lets you connect the dots.
The first time I watched this movie was with my dad. He was someone who was open to the possibility of past/future lives, and reincarnation. We loved it and wondered if somehow, we had past lives together as well. He died in 2016. One of the last things I said to him was, "If it's possible.... if I have any choice of it, I want to be his child again in another life." Every time I see even the title of this movie, it makes me think of him.
@kirk001, you sob! Your story about your dad and the possibility of past/future lives and reincarnation made my eyes water. I believe in that too, and feel the same way towards my mom. I wish she could have appreciated the symbolism of this movie as much though.
One of my all-time top ten favourite movies. Thank you for this.
That scene in the music store always gives me chills
Did someone hold back this video release to troll you over Matrix?
😂😂😂😂
I'm shocked...people think this movie is good. I'll have to watch it again.
Lol. I was also quite surprised at the glowing recommendation. I'll probably give it another chance as well
My number one wish in life is to see the 4 hour unreleased cut of Cloud Atlas. It has its flaws, and a fair bit of bad acting, but is probably my most rewatched movie of all time. Also one of the best scores ever!
Someone else commented that it is 6 hours. Not sure whom to believe.
I absolutely loved this movie when I saw it in the theatre and could never understand the hate. Every actor gives an amazing multiple performance and I'm glad you mentioned the soundtrack. It is still one of my favorites to listen to
In all honesty, I've never understood exactly what I was watching, but not once in my numerous viewings of Cloud Atlas have I ever been able to stop watching. It is ridiculously engrossing.
I admit I admire this film more than actually like watching it. Solid performances, visuals and it is unquestionably a fascinating story, yet when the story lulls, it really lulls, and some of the highs get brought down a bit. Still, I'd always recommend it for at least one watch for fans of the genre. Also really? THIS film as one of the worst of that year? I really think they weren't looking hard enough that year.
I've only seen the movie once and remember thinking it was okay. Having the actors play different races I didn't have a problem with because I thought they were suggesting reincarnation, but the make-up was VERY weird on some of the actors. It was certainly better than Matrix 4.
@@G.Freeman92 progressives believe and push for actors only being allowed to play roles that are exactly like the actor.
They typically use the only Hollywood habit of casting white characters as blacks, Indians or Asians, so any type of white actor playing a non white character is automatically racist.
“ The Matrix Ressurections is going to blow us all away “ 😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my favorite films.... I think instead of showing that the truly good at heart win in the end, it shows that from a spiritual standpoint if we "live" every version of ourselves we eventually become the version that understands the connectedness of every version of everyone else. And we kind of find a peace in knowing that the best way to live is to be who you are now. Awesome review.
Cloud Atlas is one of my favorite movies of all time! No one else ever seems to appreciate it like I do sadly lol. You definitely notice more and more things after each viewing. Its a real shame how "slept on" the film is.
Thank you for giving this movie some well-deserved love!
I just realized how much fun this would have been for the actors in the film to take part of. Imagine having so many different characters to play. Actors dream.
Wow, I’ve not heard of studios putting a maximum runtime restriction on a film’s production before. Great video, always appreciate your insights.
I’ve been meaning to watch this for a decade now. I guess you can say you’re the reason why it’s on my weekend short list. Thanks!
Its not a movie - its art!!! I have watched it at least a dozen times at least.
Cloud Atlas is a truly great movie. Having recently watched it for what was only the 2nd time I feel this more than I did after I first saw it back around 2013. Here in the UK it seemed to get little or no promotional push and I actually only discovered the movie many months after it's theatrical run had ended. I think it is for that reason that very view people I have discussed the movie with over here had ever heard of it, let alone seen it. This movie really is a hidden gem and I highly recommend it to anyone that is even remotely curious about it.
When I first watched that movie, I didn't really get all of it. So I went for an immediate rewatch. Like, immediate; I just started over again.
Other people watched Cloud Atlas, didnt get all of it and decided the movie sucks.
I think the mixed responses can really be traced down to how people respond to a movie where there are some questions left after watching it: Rejecting or embracing the open questions leads to rejecting or embracing the movie.
I think there will be an eventual critical re-evaluation of the film in coming years. I for one love it, for it is a well paced and brisk three hour run (with the exception of the sex scene, which seems out of place). Jim Strugess’ last line in the film is still one of the great poignant lines of film history as well as a great “burn.” I like to watch this movie with the equally misunderstood Interstellar.
Weinstein could spunk a better movie and make some poor actress drink it! complete garbage
It's one of the few films I watch every once in a while, and have done since I first saw it in 2013. It's simply just fantastic and perhaps why it didn't become a huge smash was the fact it takes the average viewer (me for example) several watches to full grasp what genius a story it is.
I've watched this at least ten times and genuinely loved it. Never understood the hate???
I've loved this movie the moment I saw it. It is a rollar coaster ride of emotions.
Truly impressive movie of our era.
I still dont get how people dont like this movie. Its absolutely enjoyable
one of my top 3 of all time
I think Tom Tykwer was a creator and/or director of Babylon Berlin, on Netflix. That’s an awesome show. Also, I read it’s one of the most expensive TV series ever produced, which definitely shows. It looks great too.
I liked it then and probably would love it now. I can't believe it's been a decade already.
"I'm in Cloud Atlas!? Wait, what is Cloud Atlas?"
8:53 In regards to Tom Hanks character and how he changed over the different lifetimes (*reincarnated lives). I noticed that whenever he's with Halle Berry, Hanks was a better character for it. Other characters were positively or negatively influenced by each other throughout the story as well. I thought it was fairly consistent. However, some characters were villains no matter what time period it was.
One of the best movies every made, almost infinitely rewatchable, and with an excellent message.
This is the kind of appreciation and recognition this true masterpiece of a movie deserves.
PS: Read the book, too!
thisi is one of those movies where i say thank you for thinking of me. one of the very few that can be called art and still be totally entertaining.
When I watched this film for the first, time, I was blown away by the narrative. Never before had a movie keep me guessing where it was heading to next and had me guessing. I was right and wrong about how some plots went within each story, but that kept me going because it was a film that had me thinking the entire time. That level of interaction left me satisfied with the ending because I truly felt both tested and entertained at the same time.
The weaving of each time period was the cherry on top. To see how one period affected the other was beautiful, as if I was watching history. Some people find the actors portraying different races and sexes problematic, but I think it's one of the movie's strong points. It's a creative way of showing a character's ancestor and descendant, and definitely required for a complex movie. Some were hit or misses, as I definitely think how they made Bae Donna look European was the CGI's lowest point, but I love that they were dedicated to it and I think it paid off in the end.
At the end of the day, although I need to rewatch this film to better understand it, I adored this movie on my first viewing. It's not for everyone, unfortunately, but those who appreciate it understand how amazing of a film it is. It's a shame that movies like this come along so little on the big screen. So much vision and talent is something we need more of in our current culture.
I have a soft spot for this movie. It's not subtle, but it is memorable.
this is the type of movie that is not initially well received but gets analyzed a lot and will find a cult following like bladerunner.
My favorite film of all time. I saw it 3 times when it was in the theater
I have the score in CD and now on my playlist in Spotify. I remember I bought the score when. I first saw the commercial
Loved the book, I had very little expectations, given the directors previous movies, boy! Was I wrong! It was an excellent adaptation that probably went over the top of a lot of viewers heads, thinking is optional for movie goers today.
I hope this will become a classic one day.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I absolutely love it.
The first and only time I ever even heard of this film was in a Rick & Morty episode. I was like Jerry, "Yeah, what's Cloud Atlas?"
Thx for the video. I must rewatch this movie. It is definitely the type of film that will improve with multiple views.
I watched it in cinema and it blew me away. Seen it 2 or 3 times afterwards again. Best movie from the Wachowski since the original Matrix.
I ALMOST, want to watch a Tom Hanks movie now...
Never thought I'd say that.
I remember reading that this was the biggest budget independent film ever made at the time. I just loved this film
After the matrix ..this is the best movie by the Watchouskis.
This is one of my top ten movies of all time. I wish it was more liked than it is, people either don't know it or watch it and are just confused by it. You basically get six movies for the price of one, each in a different genre.
This is an ambitious and amazing film on the subject of every life, impacting others. Well done.
Like any classic, it has rewatch value.
I am a sucker for epic movies that have multiple intertwining stories. Movies like Crash with disparate characters living in L.A., Babel with disparate characters across the world, and now Cloud Atlas with disparate souls across time.
I loved it. The use of yellow face is the only issue I have with an otherwise excellent film.
It’s a magical, magnificent experience that does justice to the superb, ambitious novel.
i love this movie down to the core of my soul. The score is ADROIT and the story is timeless and well orchestrated. i can watch it over and over again and will watch it 2nite after the Super Bowl 🤙🏿thanks for sharing
I love this movie. It's so beautiful. ❤️
I thought it was an intriguing journey. That’s hard to come but in film these days.
I dont normally love race swapping of actors....but I love this film. The acting and interconnection touches me in a way most films cannot.
Yeah. The makeup is terrible too. But still loved it.
This is the first time you've done a movie I've seen, but then realized maybe I haven't, really, since I've only seen it once.
I can't wait to see this all the way through. I've never finished it bit now I want to start over and watch the entire thing
I really enjoyed this movie. I feel like I was the only one in my group of friends to get and like it.
Revisit Transformers 2007. While the movie was designed for young teenage boys, looking back at it it actually has some memorable parts like the 2007 era product placement and such.
i just started this video and wanted to say that i saw it and loved it
i read the book at the right time since the movie came out a couple months after. i had neve heard of either. the movie did a great job of following the book. there was a lot more humor in the book, like the pianists story, and a LOT of logical subtle touches. like in the book, the "Kona" are named after Kona Hawaii and live on the west side of the island and the dialect of hanks character is based off Pidgin speak, and if you've ever been to Hawaii you'll recognize it. The future with total and complete monopolies peppered throughout the world, there were just a lot of these logical touches the author added in and it would have been cool to see them in the movie.
But overall a great movie that I recommenced to people all the time.
I love it. And when you pay attention, you realize that is talking about humanity at is core. I as a scientist have and are being taken advantage from my advisors, and I have seen the same behavior over and over across disciplines countries and continents… so abuse, is universal as much as the human impulse to overcome it and abolish it, and this is just one facet of all human endeavors where such patterns are replicated…cruelty and kindness are human, and we must do everything in our power to stop bigotry, racism, injustice… despite how the world appears to be right now, the struggle isfar from over and our descendants will continue it.
Cloud Atlas is Vincent Vangough's Starry Night on Film.... A Masterpiece....
Several mentions of the Matrx Ressurrections in this video that didn't age well. Must have been sitting in the hopper for some time!
My Fave Film of all time
I saw this at the cinema and loved it from then. I have rewatched it many times and now rate it one of the best I've seen.
I feel like I’m one of the few people who genuinely liked this movie lol
8:35 - *cue the circus music*
Mental illness hit those brothers like a brick wall.
I've been thinking about thus movie a lot and I want to share my take on it.
While somr of the themes of the movie is love and redemption, I think the movie talks about stories and how the stories of those who have lived in the past can affect our future.
I came to this interpretation while reading a book about queer utopias in which the suthor states that art has utopian possibilities ingrained in itself. Art from the past shows us how our future will be, our potential.
One key moment is one the reviewer missed while recapping Tom Hanks characters. The enslaved girl is inspired to rebel against her confitions through one of her fellow enslsved workers, specifically, through watching a film adptation of what happens to the editor on the XX story. That editor is played by Tom Hanks.
These characters are moved by those stories of the past and, in turn, affect their future. Those utopias that every character seeks, somebody has already thought about them and so they act to maje them a reality.
It makes sense to me, how histories shape our future. That's why we watch movies.
So, that's my take. Have a good day if you made it this far :)
Forgive me, but did you say queer utopias?
This one I’ll admit was out there. When I saw it didn’t know the matrix guys were behind it. Jupiter Ascending was entertaining but for the wrong reasons. I could’ve lived without that experience. This one made me think and was a visual spectacle. Not a waste of time for me is the best I can say for it.
One of the most Underrated movies
I saw Cloud Atlas in the theater, bought the book off Amazon shortly after, and then bought the Blu-ray when it was released. It's not a perfect movie, but it is well made, well acted, and never boring imo.
I'll never forget the time I was on a buncha drugs and I let this guy tell me this ENTIRE movie 😆
Didn't know this movie existed. Its been 10 years
I can't believe it wasn't loved like I love it.i love movies where actors play different characters.makeup was awsome.i I repeat I don't care that holly berry wore white face or whatever.i think they didn't like Tom Hanks as a villan.like 3 different directors.give it a shot.fantastic.i know speed racer and Jupiter rising I didn't get but this is not a stinker.
One of the best movies ever made. Criminally underrated!
I really liked this at the theater and have loved it on rewatching.
Weavings portrayal of fear and superstition is fascinating. Nothing like it.
I love this film, and not just because some of it was filmed in my home city of Edinburgh and in other parts of Scotland as well, its got a great cast, the visuals were spectacular, the story was great and it was quite funny in parts also, it had a bit of every genre in it, and what a movie, the title suits it well.!!!
This movie is the best movie on the planet - I think this is what happens to us,,,,,we die, we come back, over and over again, I see it in my dreams, different times, different planets, forever. it's hard to write exactly how I connect with this movie...just before waking up, i see different lives, experiences where I was unethical, or honorable, glimpses of past lives or they're just dreams, meaningless....but the people I believe I was, seem like me, the people I imagine to be and the different lives, though, unlike the movie, I don't remember connecting with anyone, but I suspect those other souls and myself are somewhat familiar but because the lives, in essence are different so are our interactions and how we come to have those varied personalities, in each segment, that are different based on what shaped us in those lives, but somehow I feel connected to those lives, and it's minutes of glimpses and an hour after I wake up, i lose it completely, but I remember again the shared connection to that life, and since we're people, the same feel of god is present, maybe I was a holy man or woman, different races, it's strange but compelling that this could be happening...I've never attempted to articulate this...
A truly stunning piece of filmmaking.
This film is a epic on so many levels from the script to the cinematography, to the visuals and the score.
It's well worth a viewing if only to marvel at the sheer audacity of the Wachowski's for doing what the writer said would be impossible.
Really underrated movie ❤️
interesting insight into the recording/editing of these videos. "The Matrix Resurrections is going to blow us all away" haha... you're a few months late/early my dude.
Cult classic, yes. Worst movie of the 2012, absolutely not. Wish more movies like this got made. I didn't love it, but I like its ambition.
It's like pomposity itself made a movie amd called it Cloud Atlas.
