During the pregame show at the USC vs Ohio state game, one of the camera men got to close to one of the tuba players at the end and had to pay the price
The i-dotter has a specific route and specific actions to perform as part of the performance. And they haven't changed in 70+ years. The cameraman shouldn't have been in the way.
The guy know, like most tv news tryhards he was trying to get one of those way to close up, way too ultra wide lens shots of it happening. A lazy man’s “action”. Unfortunately for him it didn’t pay off and he got decked.
This with a side of any cameraman on the field at the same time as the band needs to remember to give performers a wide berth because they change direction frequently, suddenly, and without warning. I've bowled for a few myself
I played contra last year for marching show and the field judges at finals got in the way of the horn flash and he got hit right in the face by my bell, that was the scariest moment of my life
They say that for competitions, if a field judge gets in the way, run them over… Can’t help but think that guy kind of got to fulfill his training that day
the "WATCH OUT!" is just too good - just early enough to count as a warning, just late enough to preclude the cameraman from avoiding the up-fucking of his shit
Dotting the "i" is a major thing at OSU. We are the only band that does a script. It's a huge tradition and that cameraman should get out of the way! You don't stop in the middle of that script - no matter who's in the way. I can't imagine anyone being nonchalant with that honor.
@@connorpeters7310 No the cameraman should know not to get that close because he is the i-dotter which he should know that the Sousa leans down to dot the i
@@citrusblast4372 Doesn't matter. They're drilled to stay in formation and never break set. If it's in their way, they're trained to run it over. It's everyone else's job to stay out of their way.
Um, this is a time honored tradition for Ohio State. They work their asses off and achieve the highest level of discipline to be able to pull this off. They deserve the honor.
It's always the camera person's fault in these types of things. The band has certain drill and choreography they have to do, and if someone gets in their way they are basically trained to ignore them. The camera guy was lucky he got a warning
That is a great member of the band. He yelled "Look out!", but kept doing exactly what he was supposed to. Camera got what it deserved. Hope the sousaphone is okay, though!!
I'm in the Gator band, but I love watching the formation of "Script Ohio." That camera man really needed to be around the 15-yard line for two reasons: 1) So he didn't get his ass handed to him by a nice sousaphone. 2) So it didn't look like there were two dots on the "I".
Doesn’t matter that he warned him as he was doing the bow, if you’re going to go onto a field with the band playing it’s common sense not to get up in their face. We have a specific drill to follow and we can’t just stop doing it because someone got close.
No really, it's a sousaphone. If you do not know the difference, let me tell you: they are essentially the marching version of a tuba, but the tube structure is much different. They play in the same general range but due to tubing variations will have a subtle difference in sound. This is coming from a euphonium player who is constantly having to explain the differences between a euphonium and a baritone horn. These differences are even more minute, but are nevertheless important.
0:13 I would cry if I had to do that with the sousaphone I march with. I'm already weak enough standing there and practicing I don't want to exercise with a sousasphone on my back.
That "WATCH OUT" was NOT enough time to get a heavy camera out the way...BUUUUT......that's an old tradition. He should have known to not be in the way
I always wonder how the camera guy was talked to after this incident. Like definitely not good what he did by getting too close, but.......the shot was perfect, it made you feel like you were there with him
2 things...notice the drum major hurts the guys hand on the return slap, and then(I think) the guy yells "watch out" just before he "pwns" the cameraman. Great video...thanks for posting
The camera operator was warned before going onto the field too. There are no good new overhead shots of Script Ohio because there's always a random secondary dot trying to get the "best angle."
I play both sousaphone and tuba alot. Sousaphones are louder because of the bell style and up whereas tuba is louder lower pitch because it's not a flarred out bell.
@MisterChef51 a sousaphone have a slightly different valve structure, and a tubing formation that makes intonation weakened along with a more "mellow" tone than that of a standard tuba. and also: yes, sousaphones are the ones that wrap around you...
@Johnsvloggity A sousaphone is basically a 3-valve tuba that wraps around the player there is no difference in playing style between the two instruments, A sousa is just better for marching.
I rember our college band director, Dr. Pickard, telling us to run right over the camera folks if they didn't get out of our way. I came close to having to do it a couple of times. That was 30+ years ago (Marching Mizzou). As a 5'3" piccolo player I wasn't too intimidating, but I'm surprised the camera man didn't move away from that sousaphone! I hope the sousaphone wasn't dented!
I marched 3 years of college in 2 university. What we were told about camera men. And I quote the director 'If a camera man gets in your way, there problem.'
I beg to differ. The more common Tubas have the ability to make it way easier to play lower notes with good quality due to the compensating 4th valve or rotor. Common Sousaphones only go to the 3rd valve, you can still play the same notes, but it may be slightly harder to get a good quality sound on the pedal notes but its still definitely do-able. Unless you have a Tuba that is in a complete different key, one in not going to play lower or higher than the other. Although i do see what you mean though, i do find it easier to play high F's (2 octave higher than a concert f) on my cerveny, i can still do it on my sousa though. Sousaphones and Tubas typically have different stock mouthpieces. Most tubas i buy came with a Helleburg. While most sousaphones come with a b68 basic Yamaha mouthpiece. Over my time playing with the mouthpieces, i find it quite easier to reach higher notes with the Helleberg...so what do i do? I swap the mouthpieces. My helleburg is now on my sousaphone. So now, when i want to play really high or do octave jumps, i can do it with ease. Tl;Dr, for me it all comes down to the mouthpiece. The typical sousaphone mouthpiece makes it hard to play high while the Tuba mouthpieces make it easy. Also, i love the tuba, and Sousaphone, i just hate when people are like "um, aktually...its a Sousaphone." If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck, then its a duck.
