Given the playing and given the audience response in some of Mr. Redzic's live performances, you'd think he was playing for...a bunch of zombies. Don't understand it, perhaps the audience was in a collective coma, had been lobotomized, was brain dead or all of the above.
This performance is spellbinding. I remember Segovia's recording of this Sonata. But it somehow never became as popular as the other Ponce Sonatas because I just think no one knew how to play it. Segovia's rendition is good...acceptable...sounds nice...but compared to this it's like having been on a modest 5th apartment floor then shot up to a 4-story (one for every movement) luxury penthouse on the 100th floor (what a place...what a view).
Mr. Redzic understands this piece from start to finish and shapes a coherent narrative. And this understanding is coupled to the deep emotional charge with which he conveys the music. I feel like I'm hearing this Ponce Sonata for the first time. And what a complex (harmonically shifting as a hommage to Schubert's penchant for striking key modulations) piece it is: neo-classical but far beyond Sor or Giuliani or anything in the 19th-century repertoire.
Mr. Redzic phrases so beautifully, with so many hues and a terrific dynamic range. And he plays with absolute crystal-clear sound. The performance builds- from the "pompous" first movement to the lyrical and poetic second movement (Mr. Redzic's guitar sings beautifully) to the lively third movement and ending with a "symphonic" fourth movement.
Mr. Redzic is a great musician above all, comparable to the finest pianists or violonists. His performance practically "rewrites" Ponce's most underplayed work...underplayed because I feel not even Segovia (and this is not a criticism) really grasped this piece (certainly not like Mr. Redzic here). I have noticed that Mr. Redzic makes every piece (including the standards) he plays sound absolutely new. I would say he pales againt no player past or present: but I will say many players past and present pale alongside him.

Agree! This is a splendid performance of this demanding piece.
