Filipino premier pedagogue and concertist Jose Valdez has been a driving force in the promotion and elevation of Filipino traditional/contemporary guitar music with his multitude transcriptions and arrangements. His works were what started me out on this journey of harana and kundiman renditions. On top of these, he has a collection of his own guitar compositions (i.e., not based on extant music) which I believe I have played them all. Most famous of these is this piece, Himig Bilang 4 (Tune No. 4). I do not know its background or its origins, but the first time I heard it, I was hooked. The fingers are perfect and I can play it in one sitting without too much practice. It sounds very intricate and at the same time very familiar. This is why even those who have not heard it before will be swayed by its charm and hopefully stay until the last note has stopped ringing.
