Prince was a musical prodigy! His first album was him playing all the instruments and when it came time to tour the album he put together a band. He was a far better guitar player than he gets credit for because his animated persona overshadowed everything else. Dude was incredible in all facets of creating music.

@@rickss69 Prince was a very competent songwriter, producer, and guitarist, with flair and panache, but he's not the most skilled or best guitarist out there. Of note: Clapton has also said, at various times, that SRV, JJ Cale, Buddy Guy were the best guitarists.
Of course, Clapton hasn't hung around jazz cats like Joe Pass, Al Dimeola, George Benson much, nor did he ever share a stage with Terry Kath (whom Hendrix is quoted as saying was better than he was) nor Lenny Breault, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Danny Gatton, and so many others. There is no best or greatest guitarist. Too many metrics, too many genres. It's impossible to say.

He had a massive fan base, musicians would consider it an honor to collaborate with him, the media would covet any interview he was prepared to do, he played one of the all-time best performances at super bowl ffs - I'm not sure what it takes to be considered "appropriately rated" by these people. Prince wasn’t the best at all instruments. But he had an ear to what needed to be performed by any instrument. That’s why if you played with prince , you were of studio caliber.
Princes had that ear. like that actor in th movie whiplash (forget the aggressive bs), prince wanted perfection
He wasn’t the best guitar player. Stevie Ray Vaughan , Randy Rhodes , Eddie, Ritchie Blackmore, Dude from ufo were probably all better than prince on the strings.
But prince could write a song. Prince was like his own genre, studio musician mixed with rock pop and lyrical rap schemes.

Since everyone is talking about seeing him live let me get my 2 cents in. I saw him in concert 6 times starting in 1981 on his Controversy Tour. It was cool for me seeing him pre-superstardom and after. That 1st concert I saw was in a 3900 seat auditorium in a small city in Georgia. I knew then and there that he would go on to something special, but couldn't have imagined what was to follow.
A short 3 years later Prince and the Revolution were selling out multiple dates in major cities across the U.S. including The Superdome and The Orange Bowl(which they renamed The Purple Bowl for the concert). I have attended over 100 concerts and have always told people that The Purple Rain Tour is my favorite of them all. I caught two shows on that tour. I SERVED IN ZIRNDORF GERMANY IN THE MID TO LATE 70'S AND THERE WAS A ARMY BROTHER WHO HAILED FROM MINNESOTA. HE TOLD US THEN ABOUT AN ARTIST (ALSO FROM MINNESOTA) WHO WENT BY THE STAGE NAME PRINCE. HE SAID HE WAS GONNA BE BIGTIME (AND HE WAS). WELL I LEFT MILITARY SERVICE AFTER 3 YEARS, MET MY WIFE TO BE, STARTED OUR LITTLE FAMILY, AND THEN MID 80'S PRINCE HIT THE CHARTS AND THE HEARTS OF MANY FEMALES INCLUDING MY WIFE. HE WAS IN THE TOP 100 CHART IN 78 I BELIEVE WITH 'SOFT AND WET' BUT WE KNEW HIM FROM THE LATER PURPLE RAIN AND LITTLE RED CORVETTE (MY FAVORITE) ERA. SADLY WE NEVER GOT TO SEE HIM LIVE.

Although I've been a fan of his for a long long time, I had never heard him play acoustic guitar until just now. Humbled. Blown away 🤯. Deeply, sincerely, impressed. It makes you wonder how he ever found time to get as good as he is on that single instrument considering everything else that he had going on with writing and arranging and performing and going over every mind you detail of his career as he built himself into the superstar that he became. He has the guitar chops of someone who has been in the woodshed with a guitar and nothing else for his entire life!
    Peerless.

I remember when I was learning guitar back in the early 90's and saw a top 100 list of best guitarists ever in a magazine and noticed that was Prince was high up in the list somewhere, it's crazy because most people see him as a singer/performer rather than a guitarist and don't really appreciate just how good he was, at least the magazine knew his talent.

I've met many artists, from Paul McCartney over Beyonce (well, Destiny's Child then) to Michael Jackson, but no-one impressed me like Prince. He blew me away. It was Jimi Hendrix reincarnate.
