As someone who also films their Miata, agreed. Greg is stupid awesome with his videos and i always come away feeling entertained and a little bit smarter.
Love it Greg, sounds so good! 👍🏻. Oh and your face near the end when the forklift is messing up your outro... that was too real for me 😁 feel like I’ve been there every single time I try to record something outside of the garage.
Even my heart started racing when the SDPD Explorer clip started lol. Also, you're a terrible influence haha. I bought another Miata after I sold my last one, and decided to build the 1.6 in it, and now I want to use the EFR 6258 in mine, thanks so much for all the videos. Let us know if you decide to make the trip to MATG a regular thing! Because I'd be more than happy to let you drive my Miata once the built engine is done!
I was going to ask about the spring difference between stock and the Turbosmart. My Mazdaspeed 3 uses a recirc valve I noticed a smoother response when i went to a stiffer spring setup. Damn Greg you are going to entice me into getting an EFR turbo for my build! The Luck fairy was with you for sure at the end!
Dude, there are serious high boost cars out there running for years w/o a bov and fluttering the s**t outta the turbo without any problem. VVT rocketship sounds better than ever, keep it up man, you rock youtube!
Thanks so much Greg for taking a chance a getting some more great footage but don’t do us any favors and get your car taken away, You always bring great content and if something is missing no worries.
Recirc for the win. I recirc all my builds but I did start with vag cars which is standard so I may be biased and the flutter is a cool sound and never had an issue. Even a stock vag car with an intake will flutter a bit.
Love the flutter. I played with bov so I could get the flutter with 8psi or less and when I hit full beans at 12psi I'll get the whoosh sound. It has been the best of both worlds.
You did a really good job explaining it. I definitely learned something new. I didn't even know recircs on a turbohousing were stock/existed. I only have experience with garrets and precisions. If anyone is confused about how this works they don't have enough background info to be talking about turbos yet to begin with. Lol sorry kids gotta crawl before you can walk.
The main purpose of a recirculation valve vs a atmospheric bov, is to one, avoid compressor surge during rapid TB closure under boost, but also on MAF cars, to avoid dumping already metered air into the atmosphere, thus avoiding a momentary rich condition.
I used a synapse engineering diverter valve on my mazdaspeed 3 2.3 turbo and I would probably use it on my miata motor next. It has a very quick acting spring and no flutter at all. I changed spring out once in 8yrs and that was running a large turbo with 18psi making 385whp
7:10 HOLY SHIT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POINTING THIS OUT! I could not for the life of me figure out what that noise was! Do I need to lube up my BOV piston or change stiffness settings? My China BOV makes this noise haha
That’s commitment and love for the motor to still take it out when ur not supposed too.. haha. Love it! May have to get me one of these turbo smart valves 👍
So basically the diverter valve is supposed to give you a better transient response than an open BOV? Is that something you notice? Or is it just a compact way of solving the problem? Because OEM and closed system BOVs are routed in the same manner, the outlet of the BOV is exiting pre-turbo. I am reluctant to think the divertervalve makes a huge difference in response time compared to an open BOV, but if someone can show a test of both that would be very interesting. What I basically want to know is if a turbo mounted diverter valve is a game changer compared to a turbo that does not provide that.
lol my EFR did bird whistles too. I eventually went with the turbosmart dual port. Fun noises but still nowhere near as loud as your typical "on pipe" blow off valve. Who knows I might add a second valve :).
Awesome video! But I have a question what's the little trunk lip spoiler thing you got on your Miata I think it looks really cool and definitely want one for mine. Please if someone could let me know thank you.
Just subscribed to your channel! Looks like lots of great content! I have been trying to build my knowledge for the EFR line. Do you have any videos with content about the EFR?
Hey Greg, what elbow and filter are you using? Did you have it custom fab? My stock re-circulation valve has the vacuum hose hit the filter leaving almost no spare room so I don't think I can run this valve as-is but I'm interested in it. #EFRclub #450hp
Hey Greg, did the softer spring sort some of that flutter ? (flutter sounds awesome, even if it is told to be straining the turbo a bit like you mentioned).. and the driveability-thing you explained makes it sound like the stock one was too efficient so the boost would be coming off and on to sharply, affecting smoothness.. is that how you ment, can that be sorted in the mapping ?
I hate that whistle noise every time I hear it on a turbo engine, aftermarket or otherwise. Nice to know a potential solution if I come across it in the future. Side Note: I don't know if it's just me, but it feels like my car is invisible to cops, in spite of being bright red and loud, just like yours. I guess most of them figure: eh, it's a Miata, he's probably only got enough power to spin one tire anyway. Little do they know the spicy Tapatío you have under the hood.
Yeah I've only been pulled over once before, in a span of 6+ years (for speeding, caught on radar) In my Z32 I think I was pulled over 8-10 times in the same amount of time
No not really necessary. They are more designed for response and driveability. Turbo life is directly linked to oil and turbo supply to cool and lubricate the center housing.
I haven't hooked it up still :/ needs a conversion box for the signal and I just haven't gotten around to it. It mostly helps with seeing where on the compressor map you're running your turbo at, I'm really interested in the seeing as this turbo is pretty much maxed out
@@TheCarPassionChannel If you wanted to hook something up hella janky just to see what it says once or twice you could use a teensy microcontroller, a BSS138 5 to 3.3v level translator, and that's pretty much it. Look up FreqMeasureMulti library, load up the stock example and it'll measure to frequency. Use the EFR guide to convert back to RPM.
Creg @carpassionchannel . I changed also to a turbosmart kompact , but under partial throttle ( cruising) the valve wheezes like hell. Although mine is a dual port and it vents some in the atmosphere.
@@TheCarPassionChannel the valve is adjustable... but if I turn it clockwise it starts deflecting too much air on the impeler of the compressor at vacuum which is bit ricey...
TheCarPassionChannel fuck I just remembered. Damn man that is some shitty luck. I drive with no front plate in NY. Got pulled over once and I was sweating. Luckily I was let go

No doubt. Super informative.
You misspelt best car youtuber.

Tbh as someone who never has and has no real ambition to ever own a miata. I fucking love his videos.
Man I was so freaked out the first time I heard mine. I had to pull over and make sure my vacuum line was connected. Sounds amazing though!

Doing a motor swap in my nb2 atm and this channel has helped me so much, thanks for making killer vids
Turbosmart has a much deeper, throatier chatter/flutter, soooooo meaty sounding! Amazing difference.
Recirc for the win. I recirc all my builds but I did start with vag cars which is standard so I may be biased and the flutter is a cool sound and never had an issue. Even a stock vag car with an intake will flutter a bit.
That thing sounds legit! Part of the reason I chose the EFR was because I wouldn’t need a BOV. Now I want to buy this lol
Tap my uncle on the shoulder, call that Tapatio.
Well I listen to the video on my way home from work but now that I'm actually home from work it's time to watch it

The state should create a special exemption for your car.
Instead of whistling I've got a lazy bear/cow sound off my SAAB BOV at highway cruize speed XD
Another reason for me to use a Borg Warner turbo over the Garrett.

2:47 - Is it just my eyes or is your BOV reference hose cracked or shredded up with holes?

Great content... not that I will be boosting my Miata anytime soon... or will I?!? Life’s many mysteries.
Does Turbosmart have a recirc valve that works well with some of Borg-Warner's bigger turbos?

The softer spring reduced flutter but is still much stiffer than stock. The clips in the end was the stock valve against the softer Turbosmart spring
Greg plz get that manifold ceramic coated it looks like such a turd in an otherwise beautiful engine bay
I don’t know if this is the time to be making even more turbo noise.

Are recircs or bovs even necessary? I’ve never run a bov, love the flutter too much 😄
Hoover on Cars I’ve never run them.
No not really necessary. They are more designed for response and driveability. Turbo life is directly linked to oil and turbo supply to cool and lubricate the center housing.
can you ask turbosmart if they wanna sponsor my build too? :D
How are you using the speed sensor on the turbo? Does it help you with tuning or is it just used to see how fast the compressor wheel is spinning?
I haven't hooked it up still :/ needs a conversion box for the signal and I just haven't gotten around to it. It mostly helps with seeing where on the compressor map you're running your turbo at, I'm really interested in the seeing as this turbo is pretty much maxed out
