Great work on this video! Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning seven times - so it didn't bother me so much Kolchak kept finding monsters in Chicago. He did kind of gravitate toward those kind of stories. I'm really glad I've never seen Christmas Story because I remember Darren as a great actor from his older work.
Such a great series! Now admittedly, episodes like CHOPPER and THE SENTRY are so low budget it's comical..... but still good stuff, especially for the early 70's!
Did you know Kolchak wore in wig for the show. He was so handsome! When I see him on screen his reminds me of my beloved 💓 dad. Love your channel ❤️ 💕 ♥️ 💖 😊❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!
I have revisited this show many times over the decades, your review serves as a nice companion to the 20th Anniversary compendium book I purchased. Some great supporting cast members appear and loads of talent elsewhere. The night shooting was a nightmare in itself apparently.
Chase rewrote a lot of the episodes he took no credit on. (He's certainly a big part of the high quality of the writing of this show--most of the time!) A year later, he was writing (and then producing) The Rockford Files! (The perfect match of a writing talent and a truly terrific show!)
Great overview as always! Say, I couldn't help but notice that The Youth Killer in premise comes off like an episode of Columbo, with the whole crime unfolding, and that Kolchak having to catch the killer red handed. That is, with the exception of the supernatural and horror elements taken into account.
You should have deliberately stayed up late like we did! Of course, I don't think I got a full night's sleep until I was 15, but think of the memories!
@@emperordalek My Mom was too savvy for me to get away with it then. When I got older I moved to a room in the basement. I still couldn't sneak into the tv room, but I did stay up till 3:00am listening to the radio.
@@clemdane That could have been even more dangerous since they still had repeats of scary old radio shows at the timw - which, come to think of it, was exactly how I experienced THE NIGHT STALKER. :)
@@emperordalek Hahaha dangerous! Nah. I mostly listened to things like Dr. Demento. I did watch Dark Shadows when they ran the old episodes for a while, but I thought it was fun rather than super scary. What did scare the crap out of me was when my babysitter's boyfriend (who wasn't supposed to be there either) decided to put on The Exorcist when I was around 11.
I watched this show as a kid. Probably in reruns. The episode I remember the most is the headless motorcycle rider. I was very young but I remember thinking how fake it looked. They just had a long jacket covering his face and head.
THE VAMPIRE was my absolute favorite episode. A direct sequel to the pilot movie. A menacing, sexy and admittedly terrifying antagonist. Kolchak's humor and shenanigans with Updike, the realtor, and Vincenzo. A between the Rookies and Charlie's Angel cameo by Kate Jackson.

Not really, because then I'd have to call this THAT '60S REVIEW! :) That, and I myself didn't really watch those shows when I was a kid, so I don't have much of a baseline of memories to compare with any newer impressions I may have. I'm sure someone out there is looking at them, though!
Not many beefs against the show are valid. The show always passed the censors. McGavin defended his TV work by saying he did nothing the censors did not OK. Hiring Lara Parker very bad actress she really was was a beef Darren McGavin admittedly felt he or whoever hired her made.
Don’t agree with your top three at all. The Mummy episode was outstanding, when he is in hearse trying to sew up lips of Mummy is tv gold and female vampire is very good. You missed the mark.
You are not a big fan of the show it seems to me........well, to each his own.....some episodes are good because they are scary like Frankenstein....some episodes are good because they are like the giant spider invasion.......they are so corny they make you laugh.....but you enjoy them just the same....at least i do......McGavin's awesome acting does the trick for me either way...... I mean, come on how can you not laugh at the 6 foot long torso of swordman baker in chopper????????????? That episode scared the pants off me as a kid........when my brother And i saw it again in 79 on cbs we laughed for the whole episode.... but we both agreed it was still cool and the premise was good....and very fun....with todays effects it would be scary for sure!!!! I also think they could have done another season 10 scary 10 giant spider invasion type...... But that's me......heck i bet i could come up with a few ideas myself.................just remember to most kolchack fans there is no such thing as a bad episode!!!
