This is an incredibly fascinating research. Thank you for sharing this.
Stuff like varying Zelda rankings, unusual popularity of L4D (which also got an arcade in Japan), and such can explain a lot of culture (and zeigeist) differences between the two gaming regions.

I had no idea L4D got an arcade version!

Amazing job on this one. Always enjoy a topic more when I know nothing about it to start with.

I love exploring games by way of this kind of research! Thank you for this, I feel like an entire series or videos could be birthed from this research when it comes to cultural relevance.

One thing you have to think about too is Zelda 2 released in the west over a year or so after it did in Japan. Zelda II launched alongside Super Mario Brothers 3 in the west which is a capstone achievement for what the NES was capable of technically. When Zelda 1 (TLOZ) released in the west Zelda 2 was releasing in Japan. Western audiences who had really enjoyed the gameplay of Zelda 1 then seeing Zelda 2 come out trying to mimic a Mario game along sides the likes of Mega Man 2, Mike Tysons Punchout etc. Western audiences were expecting much more polished experiences from first party developers by the time Zelda 2 was localized and sold it the west. This has to be at least one contributing factor.

Your mentioning of Tobal brought up some nostalgia. I remember playing that back as a kid and loved it! It had a bit of a weird adventure mode, but I really enjoyed it. I kinda want to see if I can acquire a copy to play it again.

Nostalgia means mission accomplished, great! Tobal 1 didn't sell too well in the West, which was apparently the justification for the decision to not release the sequel. So you were lucky to have played it.

When I discovered Metal Gear Solid it was already out a couple of years but being a PC guy I never heard of it. I tried it and I quickly felt that there's something special here and I was quickly hooked. There's something magical in dicovering something for yourself that turns out to be a favourite of many and not knowing anything about it by word of mouth.

I'm surprised Space Invaders shows up so low on the Japanese side given it essentially created the entire video game market over there, to the point that arcades were for a while just "invader houses" with a single game. I think there's some artifacts in the procedure given this, but at the same time - it's a game so fundamental that it's not even worth talking about, while in the West it is "one of the great arcade games".

Gatecrashed the conference it was presented at last year! (Not really, I got a free ticket, but I don't think there were many other members of the public in there.) There's some good material in game studies, but it usually doesn't find its way out of the academic bubble, and it can be a dry read.

    • @radekkoncewicz3107

@@retrohistories That's precisely why I asked! The limited amount of video game related papers I've seen come out of academia have been rather fledgling, largely pulling in from other disciplines or defaulting to a holistic approach. Consequently it's always nice to see data-driven research, even if that data is scraped/incomplete.

Why the hell doesn't Gravity Rush get any mentions in US publications? That's the Vita's best exclusive. Or was, before the port.

Kinda get why deus ex would not be so popular in japan , but myst ?? ok their adventure games focus more on text and story but i think this is hardware related with japanese usually less likely to invest into dedicated gaming hardware

It may have gotten lost in the crowd, since Japan's PC market was flooded with adventure games we never saw in the West.

Zelda 2 is da bomb. I loved it when I was a kid (European). Still do. Its a Plotformer zelda with straight RPG elements. Never understood why people in the west dont like it. It was also often called a Non-Zelda Zelda game. Maybe thats why.

im really bad with data and spreadsheats, can anyone tell me how did the Armored Core games do? because they were super popular in japan and not so much outside of it, but im more interested if the later entries are more or less popular than the earlier, more orthodox entries.

@@retrohistories oh man, thanks anyways, it would be really interesting to see which entries of from software's first big hit did better in the US and how well they did in Japan, thanks anyways!
