    I can not thank you enough!
    Nier Automata exactly felt like playing a AA Japanese game on PS2. And I too have nostalgia for that as well.
    And not just Nier Automata, other games like RE7, Yakuza0, Gravity Rush 2 etc. felt like the same.

    • @GrimstrokeMainr
      @GrimstrokeMainr 6 років тому +2

      Maybe thats what I don't like the game, because I was never part of that Japanese PS2 era, I was on Nintendo.
      So to me Nier just feels like what it actually is, a gameplay lacking, kinda non nonsensical story, weeb game that lets Platinums title list down.

    • @hemangchauhan2864
      @hemangchauhan2864 6 років тому +12

      InvkrMainr Hmm... I can perhaps understand that. Where I live, there is no official Nintendo presence (and hardly anyone knew what Zelda was until BotW). PlayStation was a big thing, mainly because how excessively Sony advertised it here. So I only had PS2(and PC) throughout my childhood and teens.
      After reading a lot about the PS2/GC/Xbox era, I can certainly see why people would feel that way. Nintendo games have mainly been, and still are, gameplay driven, where everything (including the story) helps enhancing the gameplay. Many games on PS2, it was the other way around.
      Although all three consoles had their fair share of experimental, low-mid budget titles. I've been meaning to play Odama, Doshin the Giant and Cubivore on GC, but my PC is struggling with the emulation a bit.

    • @MisterHeroman
      @MisterHeroman 6 років тому

      It felt more like a PS3 game to me.
      Only games that remind me of PS2 would probably be Gravity Rush and other platformers.

    • @CardboardBlueMage
      @CardboardBlueMage 6 років тому

      If Nier Automata had you feeling PS2 nostalgia, you owe it to yourself to try The Wonderful 101. It's a PS2 Japanese game flung through a warphole into the present day.

      Mobile gaming is completely replacing console gaming in Japan due to the Japanese culture of being overworked. Everyone in Japan is too goddamn busy all the time, waking up at five in the morning, riding trains for two hours working overtime, staying out with friends until 10:00 at night, etc. that nobody has the time for console gaming anymore. Thus, console game developers in Japan have given up on their domestic market and are instead targeting Western audiences. Nintendo decided to compromise by releasing the Switch, which can be a big-screen console-gaming platform for westerners, and a hardcore, high-quality, yet portable gaming device for the Japanese.

    Man, this was such a good year. Zelda, Mario, Nier, something as reportedly good as Nioh respectably filled the Soulsborne niche and somehow got pretty much forgotten, Cuphead, Persona 5, Resi 7, Prey, Horizon Zero Dawn, Divinity, Wolfenstein 2, the first Assassin's Creed pretty much ever to actually try something different, a good Sonic game...you're right, even the 8/10 games seemed better this year. I played Sexy Brutale recently and typically I'm not that into adventure games, but I loved it. Just a great year, hopefully 2018 can somehow come close.

    Spoilers~
    I have a lot of respect for making Nier Autotomato GOTY. As stated in the video, it's definitely contentious, but what I got from the game was a new kind of passion I never got in any other games. It inspired me to better my education in things like philosophy and politics, it made me invested in world building so much I started doing it myself by learning how to run Dungeons and Dragons. NieR is not a perfect game, even in a year where many games have been called "perfect" but it was the most important game of the year for a lot of reasons, many of which were stated in the video. It shows us that a huge budget passion project is still a thing that exists and it makes me excited to see what crazy stuff this game inspires a few years down the line.

    Breath of the Wild was easily my favorite game of 2017. I'm tired of open-world sandbox games myself, but BotW was a lightning bolt reminder of what that genre used to be, hearkening back to a time where games didn't hold your hand (like with the original Zelda), all while fixing issues found in most other games like it over the last decade, and genuinely pushing the boundaries of the genre. It's not just a typical sandbox game, it's a whimsical fantasy adventure game, and those kinds of games appeal to me the most. Many reasons I like it so much are why I like Morrowind so much (my favorite PC game in existence). It's not perfect at all, but the fact that I've spent hundreds of hours playing it without getting burnt out in a time where I've become burnt out on sandbox games is, by itself, enough reason for me to hold it in high regard. Every future game in the genre will be held to the standards of BotW for me.
    NieR and Divinity are easy close seconds.

    Nier Automata is amazing but SE treated it like second rate game. To this day there is still no patches or updates to fix some bugs for consoles & PC. Meanwhile they are still milking FFXV with some dodgy policies. This is why I am so glad that Platinum Games go independent for their future projects (well aside from Bayonetta 3 of course).

    • @hemangchauhan2864
      @hemangchauhan2864 6 років тому +10

TF2 has been the best its been for a good while the new update for Shovel Knight is pretty much the best version of the game. The PC version of Bayonetta has been a blast. Best year for games in a long while. And I havent even tried any games like Nier.

      *+Dangerz Own* The point is there is a lot more to Japan than the pop culture. It's a country with some serious social problems that could in turn affect the creative output of the country in time. The Japanese video game industry is a completely different monster, but like anything else, there are also different under-reported external factors that can continue to vitalize it or screw it over, such as the connection between the push for pachinko gaming (which everyone loves to joke about) and the expected surge of visitors in the upcoming 2020 Olympics and the legalization of gambling in response (which barely anyone talks about).
      That's why I wouldn't want to put all my chips into that country even if it experiences a video game boom. All the factors I mentioned earlier could have a hand in pulling the rug under the Japanese video game industry if the situation is just right.

      A completely worthless addendum, but - I think Hollow Knight DESPERATELY needs to come out on the Switch. I'd play it - and Dead Cells - for hours on end if it did. There's something to playing Metroidvanias on the PC that's always felt a bit odd to me.

      The writer at RPS responsible for their list of top Metroidvanias came up with 15 he happened to like better than Hollow Knight, that's all. If I wrote it, Hollow Knight would be numbers 1 through 15, but I didn't write it. It's not an objective fact that Hollow Knight belongs on any list, and not every article has to reinforce your (or indeed my) personal opinions.

    2017 was a year of big game releases and big game announcements.
    Nintendo got ARMS, Splatoon, Metroid, Zelda, and Mario. They announced Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Switch.
    Sony got Horizon, Crash, Uncharted, Persona, and Yakuza. They announced Monster Hunter World and Shadows of the Colossus remake.
    Microsoft announced an upgraded Xbox One. Not much else.
    Ubisoft dropped the surprise hit of Mario + Rabbids, and Beyond Good & Evil fans finally get to see something for their favorite game (in my opinion, they won E3).
    Bethesda celebrated itself with more Skyrim but they also released the new Wolfenstein which people like.
    SEGA simultaneously made one of the best games of the year and one of the worst games of the year. Somehow both in the same franchise.
    Blizzard brought a new hero to Overwatch, remastered Starcraft 1 and made Starcraft 2 free, then they announced WoW Classic.
    The indie scene brought us Yooka-Laylee, A Hat in Time, and Cuphead.
    EA f*ucked themselves in the arse.
    Everyone has something to be happy with. Except Star Wars fans.

    • @bobbyferg9173

      I’d argue that StarWars fans even got something. Yes, the gameplay is Pay to win and the game expects you to grind for hours or pay lots of money but that doesn’t take away from its several upsides. The gameplay is generally pretty fun and smooth, we got a Campaign that the last game lacked, graphics and aesthetics are amazing and they are releasing more content that is free.
      This game is kinda like the Last Jedi now that I think about it in that it was an arguably fun experience that did lots of things right but had enough flaws (that could probably have been easily fixed) that it becomes very controversial to fans and critics alike.

      I didn't really talk about any genre but if you insist:
      FPS fans got Wolfenstein, Destiny 2, Call of Duty WW2, and Resident Evil VII.
      RPG fans got Kingdom Hearts, Nier Automata, and Persona 5.
      Adventure fans got Horizon Zero Dawn and Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
      Platformer fans got Crash Bandicoot, Sonic Mania, Cuphead, Mario Odyssey, and Hat in Time.
      Those are all the genres I can think of right now. I still think we got off pretty well.

      Pan Z In Shovel Knight the downward strike is tied to just the down button, whereas in Hollow Knight it's the down button + the attack button. I personally prefer the precision allowed by Hollow Knight (as well as everything else about it).

    Couple FYI points for George, said with zero malice and all love:
    1. IIRC, the technical term for "sound effects as music" is "Music Concrete." Look up the old piece "CS Firedance" for my favorite example.
    2. The idea of platformer levels set to music was originated (AFAIK) by the Rayman franchise. Not on the same level as Mario, but not exactly indie either. No shame in copying a good idea, though.
    3. The plural of "crisis" is "crises." Pronounced "cry-seas"
    I do agree that video games aren't a lost cause like I thought they might be early last year. Also, thank you for reminding me to buy "Prey." I get the impression is that it's a neo-System-Shock; hope I'm right.

      Certain Western big-name publishers are on the Internet's shit list, now. They're probably too big to fall - I've never given much credence to the idea that we're headed for another industry-destroying crash - but they aren't too big to *fail*, and fail miserably.
      Methinks 2018 to 2020 will be a crucial period for EA's Andrew Wilson. He'll realize that FIFA's lightning in a bottle can't be replicated across the rest of the market, but he'll only realize it once something big, loud and as obnoxiously self-important as Battlefront II was will flop hard.
      Something like Anthem. The BioWare I knew and loved is dead, Visceral is dead and buried, Project Ragtag is defunct and the idiots hired someone as talented as Amy Hennig and will now have her stick to boilerplate Destiny-worthy NPC babble.
      I think Anthem's going to be the big one. As in, the final, big stinker that'll scare the pants off of the investors and shareholders.

    Nier: Automata is the video game equivalent of a film co-directed by John Carpenter and David Lynch, or a book co-written by Stephen King and Thomas Pynchon. Its existence is a little slice of the sublime slipped beneath the veil of reality.
    Like a big-budget Undertale, I'm not going to run around crying its praises every chance I get, but it fundamentally changed the way Average Joe Gamer (read: slightly nerdy high schooler) looks at video games. It's a very important game.

    To be fair, that was only like a handful of devs that said that the Japanese gamming industry was dying. One of those was Keiji Inafune, who created Mighty No. 9, So I personally don't trust what he has to say on the matter.

      I'd argue that they weren't doing as well in comparison to previous and later years. To say that they were out right bad is misleading. For example in that time period of 2010-12, Japan were still releasing quality titles and sales weren't the absolute worst.
      Sure there was a greater focus on western games, (But to be fair, as westerners we are going to be exposed to western games on average.). And as far as Inafune is concerned, to assume the industry was going to die is ill-informed.

      "The only companies making good games were Platinum and Nintendo."
      That you know about. A lot of companies also invested in making games for niche devices like the DS and PSP. For example, Square mainly released their huge games like Birth By Sleep and Dissidia on the PSP. Also a lot of good games in that era were Japan exclusive.
      The notion of Japanese games only just got good last year is incredibly misleading.
      Fromsoftware released Souls games which both people from the east and west love, Sega despite releasing terrible Sonic games still made the Yakuza games, despite the unsuccessful sales of the Wii U Nintendo still made great games, Atlus still made great games, Square made great games, Platinum still made great games, Capcom had some hit and misses, lesser known companies like falcom still made well-liked games and despite Konami selling their souls, MGSV was still a quality game.
      It might appeared that they were going under, but if you do some digging, the notion is incredibly misleading. You could argue that western games just got more popular.

    For me the biggest surprise last year was Horizon Zero Dawn. It got a lot of hate for not innovating enough. But similar to something like The Witcher 3 or The Last Of Us it took well established mechanics and perfected them.
