  • China and Taiwan, de facto separate political entities since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Today, the central issue is the political status of Taiwan. A cross-straits confrontation would have high stakes. READ MORE: str.sg/wBVs [For subscribers]

      The truth is Chiang Kai Shek lost China and fled to Taiwan in 1949 when the island was owned by Japan legally.

    The more Taiwan thinks about the world, the more it should volunteer to be part of China mainland. Sweden and Finland join NATO for a reason.

    • @housera229

      So you're suggesting that a well-stablished democracy should "volunteer" to become part of an authoritarian, surveillance state? that's not how things work.

    Straits Times failed to explain why a growing younger generation in Taiwan see themselves as Taiwanese instead of being Chinese. This has got to do with the removal of all links to Chinese Mainland from textbook teachings to building landmark renaming and glorification of local identities. Contrast that with South Korea and it will put all Chinese to shame.

    • @nasi364
      @nasi364 2 роки тому +8

      And you failed to explain China's constant bullying of Taiwan is what led to it

      Could you explain what about South Korea?

    • @Lawyer1606
      @Lawyer1606 2 роки тому

      @@nasi364 please define bullying...in my mind the biggest bully is USA, after conquering all the land it want such as California from Mexico, Hawaii, Guam and etc it is telling the world how to behave and what political system every country must adopt.

      There is no “removal of ALL links to Chinese Mainland”, just changed the proportion

    The people in Taiwan have to ask themselves a question. Are they willing to fight to the last man standing, like the Ukrainians are expected to do?

    The assumption is that the U.S. will build military bases in Taiwan Island, if Taiwan government declare independence. If the Singaporeans want a war in the far east, because China does not actively putting military pressure on the Taiwanese government, the Taiwan government needs to pull the trigger to make the island into a battlefield, like Ukraine, which is unlikely. During the World War II, the U.S. made Okinawa a battlefield, in which the U.S. military forces killed hundreds thousands of civilians in the island.

      Shenzen is the new economic zone and ancestral home for Taiwaneses and Singaporeans. Dreadful to think Taiwan should aim their guns at mainland China because Taiwan feels threaten ? Aiming your missiles at your ancestral home because you are threaten is not an accuse . Annihilation of southern china or other cities in China is woke and US posturing for might is right ? Destroy your ancestral home is why Taiwan is a rabid dog barking when approach . Ban Taiwanese from doing business in the mainland before you start a war will definitely bring hardship for all.
