The last time I was this early Mao Zedong's hairline wasn't in full retreat.
His hairline was just following Maos orders. Retreat in the face of the enemy and wait until someone else does the fighting for you, then claim credit. Maos hair fled and then his propagandists just painted him however he wanted.
@Kysple America entered Korea to uphold the pre-war border and to defend their ally, a small, agricultural backwater, against an industrialized, modernized foe and today that same border exists and the South is the worlds 12th largest economy and one of its largest militaries while the North hasnt been able to fully feed itself in decades and has to make their citizens poop in their yards to make up for fertilizer short falls. The USSR and PRC didnt really gain much in the war aside from keeping a US ally off a tiny insignificant chunk of their border and it cost the PRC nearly 150,000 lives to the US's 36,000. The Soviets didnt really want a war in Korea so they didnt really start with any concrete war goals but the PRC and DPRK set out the war to conquer Korea which they failed whereas for the US/UN the survival of South Korea was the primary goal and conquest of the North at best a secondary goal. The US/UN achieved their primary goal but not their secondary goal while the DPRK and PRC failed in their primary goal and had to settle for a status quo ante bellum.
The war would likely have gone far worse for China if they didnt flee. China operated out of bases on their border and carried out repeated aerial missions without fear of retaliation because the communist MiGs could dash across the border and run back when the originally slower western air forces responded and the west couldnt carry out their doctrine of cratering runways and striking at logistic centers because China was playing things both way, carrying out an undeclared war so they could hide behind claimed neutrality to prevent an invasion or bombing runs while still sending hundreds of thousands to fight. Even a non-nuclear total war would have been more one sided since China's air defenses were scattered and weak, the Soviets not really interested in a war so far from their centers of power, and the Chinese economy and infrastructure were as fragile as tissue paper, some targeted high altitude bombing could have made their foot insecurity and famines far worse.
Hard to count things as a "W" when you dont achieve your main goals, suffer disproportionate losses, cant fully commit out of fear of retaliation, and then have to give up and settle for pre-war conditions. That's doubly true with long term conditions taken into account seeing as the ROK's military budget is larger then the DPRKs entire economy and "North Korean" is synonymous with famine riddled, ineptly ruled, and weak while there's likely multiple pieces of tech in your home made by South Korea.
The Chinese Civil War wasnt a victory for the ROC, but it's also been a bit of a pyrrhic victory for the PRC. Until recently someone in Taiwan made something in the ballpark of 5-10x that of someone in mainland China made and even today it's close to double that of the average PRC income, all while still enjoying high standards of living. Every time the PRC has tried to threaten Taiwan they've been swatted aside like a misbehaving child since even off their own coast they cant provide too much of a threat. The CCPs claim to legitimacy has always been that they're providing prosperity and equality but when the ROC can beat them in both regards despite being stuck on a small island with little resources and despite being politically isolated it flies in the face of the CCP. The PRCs claims to power and strength similarly break down when they repeatedly fail to threaten Taiwan. The Chinese civil war wasnt a victory for the ROC and the PRC controls about 90% of Chinese people and 90% of the economy of both Chinas but their lack of resolution in the war hurts them long term since they've always made taking Taiwan out to be a keystone in their victory and central to their party's ideology. Ironically the CCP making Taiwan out to be such a big deal is whats made them a big deal, if the PRC claimed victory over what they held then Taiwan wouldnt be such a "stubborn nail" or "dingzihu" for the CCP.

I took the ferry from Xiamen to Kinmen last year. It's only a few kilometers away but travelling through the thick morning fog it was like going into a parallel universe where the KMT never lost. It's so surreal to be so close to mainland China but for it to feel as if you're still in Taiwan, which to be honest, feels like a different country.

As a mainland chinese, I have to admit that I know very little about this part of our history which can hardly be found in any Chinese history books. I appreciate your efforts in making this video and aiming to tell the story in a neutral point of view.
It's highly annoying when countries including mine, the US, omits facts that might make them look "weak". I highly doubt more than a few people who were involved in either one of the Taiwan Straight Crisis are still alive, let alone in power. It has been more than half a century since the events took place so why do they care so much still? Maybe it made the PRC look a little weaker back then, but no one nowadays thinks the PRC is a weakling, that's for sure. Hiding historical events just makes it that much harder to learn from them.

The older generation that were around probably are mostly deceased a while ago. Also I’m not sure if there were as much involvement by the original Taiwanese people since not sure if they concerned which mainland group (KMT vs CCP) took over.
When people think of unrecognised states, they think of small, impoverished areas of an established country ruled by extremists and corrupt military leaders. They clearly don't know about Taiwan, or that it has one of the most stable economy in the world and is no longer ruled by the people who caused the situation.
I lived on Taiwan during the Cold War. I was only a little kid and my father was a US Army officer.

The 1958 TW strait crisis was fought mainly as an artillery battle. The ROC forces stationed on Kinmen island was facing artillery barrages from PLA positions on the mainland. They responded with counter fires. Allegedly during the conflict US transferred 240mm Black Dragon super howitzers to ROC Army which played “decisive” role of suppressing communist fires.
Brilliant stuff. I have much much more an interest in Classical, especially Late Antiquity, but these are so well researched and presented that I keep coming back!

As a Chinese I've learned a few things from this video. I also appreciate your effort keeping it as factual and neutral as possible. Thanks! Just curious did you make the animation yourself? If so what did you use? Being able to visualise the geographical context is a big plus for understanding these events.
I've been on the tour departing from Xiamen by sea to as close to Kinmen (Jin Men) as possible and it was actually enjoyable. We could wave to the guards on Jin Men from our ship and they waved back. In my years living and working in different countries I've made a few friends from Taiwan and we've learned to forgo the pointless debate of how many legitimate Chinas there are and learned to embrace a shared cultural identity.
Also did you know that people of Jin Men made cleaver knives with old bombshells from those bombardments? They are apparently very popular souvenirs to Mainland tourists.

Thank you for making this video. As Taiwanese, we learn about the first and second Taiwan strait crisis briefly in our histroy books. However, this video brings a cold war and world perspective to these incidents that happened in recent history.
I believe there will be video regarding Taiwan in the cold war theme. Since Taiwan and Korea are still continuing the cold war.
p.s. I think the main reason why KMT don't want to retreat from those small islands near the mainland is because KMT will further lose legitimacy of being CHINA by not having any land in CHINA. And this is also the main different stand between US and the KMT

Glad you actually reported history, of that Taiwan was separated from the Mainland in China in 1949. Even though at that time both claimed to be the one China, the ROC and PRC were clearly 2 separate counties.

An Air Force crewman who was on Guam during the second crisis in 1958 wrote how - after flying in with his unit of giant B-36 bombers was surprised the next morning to see the planes had been filled with incendiary bombs - an added warning to the PRC.

It's taken me a week but I've finally caught up on the entire run from the first episode to the last (so far)! Great series.
I think while the new video format looks really good, it doesn't really seem necessary. If its easy to make more of them, than sure! Make more. But if it slows down production, then I don't think we need any special animations for the videos.

The history of Taiwan is a fascinating subject I enjoy learning more about given that I don't know a great deal on the topic. Thank you for this video on the ongoing struggles between the PRC and ROC.

Correction: The Army of ROC was not called "National Revolutionary Army" at the time. It was renamed in 1947 to Republic of China Armed Forces.
edit: It would have also been nice if you would not have marginalized the inhabitants of Taiwan in the video and mentioned, that the Chiang regime was extremely unpopular in Taiwan and only held on to power through martial law and incarcerating/killing a significant portion of the Taiwanese population.

Even if Chiang could somehow be overthrown, Mao would never have allowed even a Communist Taiwan to exist as a separate entity for long, nor would he have trusted Taiwan to remain a faithful PRC client state even if its government intended to be one.

Has brought to my attention of the ROC 1950 attack on Shanghai. The conflict did NOT completely end after the ROC took refuge in the small Taiwan Islands.
@@tdwebsteThere are just way too many examples.... The most prominent one being the "Feb. 6" attack in 1950, when the ROC bombed urban Shanghai, leaving 1400+ dead or wounded. During the first and second crisis, most aerial combats also took place within PRC-controlled territories. Not to mention the famous (or infamous) Black Cat Squadron of the ROC Air Force, which carried out 200+ surveillance missions over Mainland until 1970s(!), intruding as far north as the Sino-Soviet border.
And btw, the China Civil War never "ended" in 1949, neither side said so.

You are correct the PLA did attempt to capture the ROC by attacking the Taiwan Islands in 1950 1954-55 and 1958.
But than thx to Mao brutal Cultural Revolution. 1966-76. China had bigger problems, killing its own people.
But the China Civil war is over, except in your own mind and perhaps a few other ultra-nationalist Little Pinks.

I was simply pointing out two facts:
1. that the ROC government also carried out attacks/intrusions on Mainland territories, which you did not dispute; and
2. that neither side officially declared an end to the status of a Civil War. This is a legal rather than political question and is not that hard to answer. No armistice was ever signed between the parties and thus, in the eyes of the law of armed conflicts, the status of war persists. (some scholars may argue that the abolishment of the Temporary Provisions in 1991 marks ROC's unilateral exit, but I would say that's more about domestic/constitutional law rather than external matters).
3. In any case, it is indisputable that both sides carried out armed attacks after 1949, which rendered your original argument futile.

Let China not invade Taiwan and start WWW3. Such invasion would take Japanese, Philippines and Vietnam Territory. And require bombing China Cities, mast destruction of Chinese Factories, and infrastructure. Knowing this China attack Japan, India. South Korea and Australia become bases of defense and also be attacked by China. China will be in a very difficult situation facing the world. Knowing it is a matter of time will engage in either or both nuclear, bioware. The world at this point will be at a tipping point. But the CCP will underestimate the world's resolve. Russia which is an opportunist, faced with world destruction may rip into China. Even if the Russian Government doesn't officially do so. Suicide attacks from all sides will attack China, knowing stopping China under the CCP is the only way to save the world.
We don't know how China invading Taiwan will play out. China has absolutely nothing to gain by invading an independent Country split off from China during the China Civil war.

US just defended Penghu island and Formosa.
The Kinmen and Mastu were excluded.
During this crisis, president Eisenhower also signed the defensive cooperation treaty with Taipei. ROC had the defensive and economic assistance from US until 1979. Thus,Taiwan was undergone 40 years martial law rules.
At least, US remained the Taiwan’s de facto independence from Mainland.
It is very important for Taiwan.

Taiwan has been looking for chances to get in WHO, yet its people does not respect WHO's resolution not to name a disease after a place or an animal. Not to mention US had vaping pneumonia which had the same symptom as COVID-19, and US flu data kept high since late 2019, until COVID-19 was finally tested. Larger chance is that it is American virus, just like Spanish flu were brought to Europe by US WWI soldiers.
In 1957 our military dad was shipped out to Taiwan that was called Formosa for over a year.

I recall that the 1960 debates between Nixon and JFK included two additional islands off the coast of China, Quomoy and Matsu. You might want to discuss that.

If you look online, you can find the meeting between Nixon and Mao. The exact transcripts of conversation from everybody there, was recorded and recently declassified.
Many good parts in the conversation, but if I were to chose 2..
1. Mao asked Nixon if this conversation will be kept private. Nixon replies yes. Nothing will be made public.
Mao died before it was made public. I think Nixon died before it too.
2. Nixon wanted to talk about sensitive topics like Taiwan with Mao, and Mao decline and offered to talk about other things instead.

He was a Military Leader 1st, and a terrible Civic/Political/Country leader.
He often ruled like a Military Leader (what he's done all his life), and couldn't rule like a civilian over civilians. A common fault of military leaders.

There's a 1st hand story from one journalists who shared how she went to elaborate parties in Shanghai almost every day and lived very well off there.
It bothered her that so many lived painfully poor there.
While getting escorted back home by KMT soldiers, she saw people eating the grass and asked the KMT soldier what he thought.
He replied, "we don't consider them people".
IF Chiang Kai Sheik did win China, I'm not terribly confident that it would be run well too.
I think better than Taiwan, because he'd have more help in it from the USA, but he would have to tame his ego and the need to always be in charge, and give his seat to somebody else.
If that didn't happen, he would have done a terrible job with China and I predict it wouldn't have been long before the Soviet Union started attacking China and doing it's best to disrupt and overthrow the new government that was it's neighbor..

I learned a lot. It also opened my eyes to how sensitive Mao was to public opinion of China being the aggressor, with his surprise retreat..
I see this same behavior with China today.
Ironically, these days if you want to travel from outside Taiwan to Kinmen, the easiest way is to fly to Xiamen in China then take a ferry to Kinmen.

"Cash my check" was the UK version. The US troops referred to him as "Chiang Kai Save Myself" until orders came from the Pentagon to "Stop."

It should be noted that the Taiwan Strait Crisis and the Bombardment of Kinmen was also known as the THIRD UNITED FRONT (Union between CPC and KMT). Really enjoyed the episode on November 25th the Politics of Culture.
Particularly ending with the idea of a future where people do not lack from resources.
Really want you to consider portraying nuclear power as part of that future.
So many people are afraid of it and it'll take popular culture to break that fear.
Look at how few people died due to radiation from two of the most horrific accidents with old technology. A gigantic earthquake and a huge tidal wave.
Look at the half-life of nuclear waste and how it's really not the scary thing that the media likes to sell copy advertising with.
Look at how much human suffering is caused by extracting cheap labor from slaves or others versus an abundant power source that truly could be delivered on assembly line process.
You would have a society that has an abundance of energy.
When humans are not taxed with having to produce energy with their sweat and detriment to their health with pollution, the quality of life goes up.
Look at the advances in nuclear power and generation 4 reactors.
Look at the advances of small modular reactors and how they can be as common as a Walmart for truly a local power grid. These could be cycled up and down as needed based on the lack of wind and solar.
Think of nuclear submarines and how they spool up their power.
The age of these gigantic reactors is truly over.
The cost overruns with these gigantic projects is wasteful.
Small modular reactors can be delivered on trucks and assembly line built as fast as a walmart.
Look at how this new technology is truly walk away safe.
Look at the advances in using up spent fuel faster than what they produce.
Look at the nonproliferation factor.
Look at the greenhouse gases and the number of deaths that come from mining coal or extracting petroleum. Nuclear is far less deadly and truly clean.
There are forces that want to make nuclear so scary and so safe that it's so expensive it'll never be built.
Be wise to all this.

Kinmen and Matzu are both belonged Fujian, a province of China.
Ironically, Kinmen and Matzu are the only two legitimate territories of ROC. The UN received Formosa from Japan after WW2 but never transferred the sovereignty over Formosa to ROC.

The reason why the US was only willing to extend protection to Taiwan and Penghu was because those were former enemy territories separated from Japan as a result of World War 2. As such, in accordance to Article 77 of the UN charter, Taiwan, Penghu and their surrounding islands should be Trust territory to the Allied powers. Offshore islands of China, such as Kimmen, Matzu, Dachan, Yijiangshan and etc., do not fall into the protection of the trust territory.
Thank God no resolution was made. Now Taiwan is our aircraft carrier off the coast, consistently threatening the CCP
