That rubber care stuff is absolutely unbelievable. It makes the rubber swell and seal the roof when it's closed. The reduction in rattles on mine was phenomenal. It was like I was suddenly driving a hard top car, rather than a convertible. Oddly enough I'd never really noticed the noise before, but I really noticed it had gone. It makes the car feel like a much better quality car somehow.
My problem is instead the 3 arches inside, that should forward when you push the top back, allowing the portion of the top with the rear glass, to collapse properly and close well. Think they need to be lubricated over their length to allow the roof to slide. I'll try that too.
Mines the same, really stiff for it to lay flat. I brought my MR2 as a project, haven't started anything on it yet apart from restoring the headlights.

I think you need a new top buddy. That one has been neglected severely.
