Just found out that Kelly Joe passed away. Roll away the stone and shine-eyed Mr Zen got me through my 20s. He's what a contemporary artist looks like in the real folk blues lineage. The other commenter is right: the music passed through him. 🙏
Having played stringed instruments for 35 years, and having listened, a fanatic, for 10 years longer than that, to everything I could get my ears around: there is simply nothing else like KJP.
Absolutely beautiful, another treasure found on UA-cam. True musicians tend to stay elusive these days I guess, can't believe I Havnt heard of this guy.
I first saw him at the cafe next door to where I was living on SE Hawthorne, there were abut three tables in there, really small. I remember thinking the quality of musicians in cafes sure has gone up lately. Ha. Now I have listened to him for years and I consider him to be one of the three greatest musicians in my lifetime.
So, I'm 48 hours into discovering KJP. I've downloaded every album and watched every video, including this one, easily over 50 times. I can't express how his music and passion has hit me. I'm a music lover since I was 2, and a blues guitar player for 22 years. Nothing has moved me like this since I first heard SRV. His whole spirit and playing takes me to another time, the dirt roads of Mississippi in the 1940s. He has been the only one that has captured that Robert Johnson aura (like the devil is hot on his trail). I'm absolutely changed since Friday night. Cheers
+lawlaw1 My feelings exactly. After getting heavy into music theory to understand jazz improv for the past 5 years, Kelly Joe is pulling me back to the roots of just feeling the music
He used to teach me guitar in the 80s at brass reed and guitar shop in vancoiver wa. Such a genuinely beautiful human. Such an incredible player and singer!
Yea--this being blues, he sticks to the old I, IV, V, but there are also a bunch of 9ths, sus4ths, major 7ths etc. stuck in for flavor. The real lesson for players is in the rhythms and the independence of his thumb from his fingers. Listen to how he changes the lead line tempo while maintaining the bass line through the solo. There are other guitarists that can do this, but not many. When you add his singing and creativity to the mix, KJP is one of a kind.
raywest53 Spot on. This man is the reason I threw away the plectrum. Changed the instrument completely for me after decades of playing. Play nothing but fingerstyle now
I am with you. I look over youtube all the time and feel like I know a ton of great players but my buddy just told me about this guy. I went on and my jaw dropped. He is a sick kinda good.
thank u kelly yuor sound is great!!!! very special when used acustic how lap steels....i hope u can sound in ITALY soon....maybe last year i speak to bring u in my island sardinia!!! absolutely
amazing arpeggiation ,and talent awsome man,,,,im a huge fan,,,and this on has again touched my soul,,,,,i wish you could come to Vanc BC ill be first in line brother
@nobanjono it's good to see normal comments on YT, especially comments that are informed and honest. KJP is one of the very few musical/lyrical geniuses currently living on our planet. If you can't enjoy live music like this, you have no soul
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing! Why is it so hard finding Live videos on youtube of Kelly Joe Phelps? It is such a pleasure watching and listening to his amazing performances! Thanks again :)
@tim0090 Really? What is country blues? The blues was never meant to be played just one way. It has been an ever evolving form of music and always will be. Kelly Joe Phelps has studied Jazz and Country Blues for many years. He has gathered all that knowledge, forged his own unique style, and is taking the blues to the next level. He is an true innovator.
For players, just put capo on the second fret, chords are G F and C on little different way, then just listen for his picking and play, this is not an hard song to play...
Nope-assuming we're in C major (which, because of the capo, we are not), that would be V, IV, I--same chords, different order. I hope I can be forgiven. But I think that my point was that, even though he sticks to various inversions and extensions of the tonic, dominant, and subdominant chords, in whatever order, the harmonies are more complex than that would suggest. And rhythmically, his playing is on the genius level.

This is an incredible fullness of a melody for only one guitar. Bass, Melody, intersections, solos. Kudos man.
Excellence. Heart felt and heart rending as it should be.....
Found this guy on u tube what a find! cant stop listening to him..always loved this style of blues born in the US of A
from a NZ fan forever...
Absolutely fantastic. Normally I don't purchase someone's albums when I can simply download them. I will be purchasing this.
My son and I saw him at Bridge Street Live in CT. His music stirs up a multitude of emotions. It draws you in. The evening went too fast.
The barest of bones for 'Hard Tme They Never Go Away'. So sorry that I didnt get to see KJP perform live.
Amazing guitar with amazing voice.
I love this, it's beautiful

What a great style.
Jesus wept! I am now able to move on from the Louvin Bros.; ... praise the Lord!

His voice makes me think to Raul Midon... (on "Why Am I feeling so bad")
@johnmacward
Yeah, he does a lot of that. Keeps it interesting even if I don't like all the changes. This guy's phenomenal.

actually, the name of the song is Country Blues. It was recorded by Dock Boggs.
William Elliot Whitmore covers this one as well, should definately check it out. This guy is amazing though.
Il est fort en country blues
I wonder if the people there realize the virtuosity that they've just witnessed..
For players, just put capo on the second fret, chords are G F and C on little different way, then just listen for his picking and play, this is not an hard song to play...

Nope. Dock Boggs is still the best.
+William Lane to me KJP is absolutely the best on this area. I haven't found a decent vid of Dock Boggs on UA-cam... it's really hard to compare
I thought Dock Boggs was a banjo player.
Way to butcher the original song..
Du lourd!!
