I have a 28 pound stand system that would work in every challenging situation you have. It would even expand your range of trees.
I hunt similar terrain to a degree. I solved my problems.....
I love listening to Dan talk. My mentor was talking about this stuff back in the 90’s. Before the internet. But he read hunting magazines. Unfortunately he passed away. It is crazy to me how much he taught me about hunting on public. And the things he taught me is exactly what everyone talks about now. He was so far ahead of his time. Now I can really appreciate all the skills he taught me
Dan , you said 40 years ago it was also a lot of pressure on public land. I remember in the early 70's in S.C. you couldn't find a place to park along the side of the road opening day of muzzeloader and rifel. Turkey season was even worse. I always got a couple of Turkey's the last week of Turkey season. People had to be there the first week, the people would peter out by the end of the second week and the turkey had a week to settle down some. You had to be on your toes because by the end of the second week the turkeys had heard it all and would hardly gobble and would come in silent. It was crazy. Now The SCDNR doesn't want out of state hunters. They have raised the price of hunting licenses to where the average person can't afford to go. You can blame the NWTF for that. I found private land to be harder to hunt , like you said in a club it was hunted harder. In a different way.

I hunt mostly public in NJ. We had wayyy more hunters in the 80s, early 90s, AND more deer then too. That was befre we had coyotes or ever heard of ehd.

Here in Pa I hunt Allegheny National Forest. I have hunted there since 1969 and I agree that 40 years ago it was packed. Currently it is a paradise for hunting, and it is far from "Packed". The reason, I believe is everyone wants to see a ton of deer and ANF doesn't necessarily offer that to a Nimrod. What it has is Monster Bucks........you need to find them.
I'm glad I found Dan. I love to hunt. I'm getting my kids in. I had to learn how to hunt on my own. No one showed me the stuff you're talking about . I do not understand thermals and how they work

Great point Dan you have made it several times over the past few years. When you’re trying to teach others to be successful at something your good at the quality and care you experience in your own hunts has diminishing returns. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Ever since my 15 years old now son started hunting my time and efforts to put him in my best spots and concerns over his success. Have lead me not to kill a 125” buck in 8 years. I killed his 1st bow buck 2022

Great show guys. I am actually seeing many big bucks living in areas with lots of stands and cameras. I hunt mostly farm country with tons of ag and little cover and there is nowhere that ppl never go. I’ve learned the big bucks are living right under everyone’s nose but they are closely monitoring all the access points and using the does and younger bucks as a safety screen. I killed 3 big ones this year in places with numerous stands and cameras by getting really creative with my access. I’m starting to really change my views on hunting pressure.
If you read public hunting land forums you’d think there was no place left to hunt. I consistently get into 125” plus deer on pressured land and I live in Baltimore. You wanna find mature deer you have to scout and scout some more. If you want something enough you’ll get it.

I started deer hunting in '88. The first year I hunted, opening rifle season sounded like a war. It was crazy and actually a little scary to me as a 13 year old. I lease 260 acres now with some friends, but I mainly bow hunt there. I still rifle hunt some on the same public as I did growing up with family.
There are literally 100's of 1000's of public acres to hunt and the woods barely have hunters in them. There are still hunters but it's nothing close to what it used to be. There's a few bow hunters but it's next to nobody.
I don't get to spend a lot of time there but I'm sure there are way more mature bucks then there used to be.
Good advice about the late night trail cam pictures and how far are they coming to get to you. I get regular pics of a nice buck, always late night, early morning. A guy i know gets pictures of him over 2 miles to the east of me. Last week i saw him crossing the road in front of me, a mile and a half to the south of me, just after dark. So i know he beds close to that spot, but cant hunt that area

I love the ebb and flow of public land hunting. I killed my first deer with a bow in Minnesota when I was 14-years old. I had no bow hunting mentors and my dad's only advice was to shoot one and he would find it. Today, I hunt heavily hunted public land in Wisconsin and passed on a half-dozen deer this year, looking for a bigger/older specimen. I don't use trail cameras because I spend my money on other things (tequila, vacations, etc.) but I don't crap on hunters who do use them. I figure that if I kill a nice buck on public land, I have not only beaten the buck - I beat all the other hunters as well. I say "bring on the challenge".

I gained a hunting buddy in my son and past the traditions of archery and woodsmenship on. It does sting eating tag soup a little these past few seasons but it’s for legacy besides nobody cans what you killed last year anyways but the man in the mirror
I think theres a place for a hang on w a taller seat post. I took mine from 21.5 inches to 25.5 and it is LOADS more comfortable. Im 6'3" and now sit like a bar stool almost instead of full squat hip crease below knee. Easier to stand slowly and stay comfy as well. The kicker is u actually have ur feet closer to the tree so u could use a smaller platform for weight
central wisconsin here.... we got lots of 3 plus year old bucks and lots of wolves...ain't easy but you'll get a chance or two every year if you try .... we need to hunt the dogs to help .... we have an easy winter so far .. get a half mile back and find the bedding ...

I know you guys hunt Michigan. I hunt public in the upper eastern southern. I’m disabled and can’t push myself as much as you guys. Can you still kill decent bucks without going back a mile, lol. I seen decent sign. I’m guessing. Night sign.
Ever want to help a disabled guy out and a free place to stay let me know. lol Presque Isle MI. A lot of state land. My parents own a marina there. Have a 5th wheeler off Grand Lake and a house across from Lake Huron. I try to implement what you guys teach. I use onX can’t get to the spots you guys can. It sucks. I’m trying to teach and get my adopted kids into hunting. It was hard. When they were foster children they couldn’t be around guns. We adopted them so all,is good now. I take them squirrel hunting. My oldest son took deer hunting last November. Hopefully take one of them turkey this spring.

Ive always said it takes people n the woods to move the deer not all of them are trophy hunting it helps in our area 😇👍🏼
I've had decent success with grunt calls, but it sure does put them on red alert. When I'm doe hunting I never leave home without a bleat call. I can't count the times I've busted a group of does that heard me but didn't smell me. If i'm quick with the bleat one of those does will almost always stop and look. Several times the lead doe will actually come back to take a look.
@Dan Infalt. I come up with idea of knowing what animals you got three years ago. I have few more ideas not currently implemented n contacted Exodus an Tacatacam and neither will reach back out. I have game changing ideas as a software engineer. Guess I need to patient my ideas n all these companies can pay me since they don't want to listen!

I am fully aware of that but Dan took time to come back on, so I wanted to make sure new people have the chance to go over to the channel.
I generally don't watch anything to do with northern, or western hunting because it has nothing to do with where I hunt. The timber company leases I hunt are cutovers of varying age, so everywhere is a bedding area. I would be lost out west and a western hunter would have no idea what to do in this environment. Our deer are not deer in Wisconsin. That's what hunters need to realize. Don't look for something that isn't there. If I want to go catch king mackerel, I go to the coast and not the great lakes.
Shooting a big buck definition can be a a wide range of opinions. To me, my definition of a big buck is the biggest buck in the hunting area you're hunting in.

Sharing information online about hunting on public land is not bad for hunting. We need more people interested in hunting private or public than ever. The nonproductive activities are not what we need more of. Getting people in nature is awesome for society as a whole.
All these new people hunting on public land...get ready for disappointment 😅😮. They will quit in a couple years and go back to private. Seen it too many times.
A big buck too me is 100+" Florida public anything over 100" special
