- The Game Boy Color is a system that people have happy memories of and when they go back to play it they quickly realize that the screen hasn't aged well. Today we are doing a modification that the Game Boy Color badly needs: replacing the screen with a newer backlit model.

just imagine having this kind of backlight GBC back in the days of pokemon red and blue.
I can imagine playing pokemon less.
There was no way my parents will buy me double or triple the ammount of batteries to play it.

Somewhere between learning of a sewing machine that connects to the Gameboy, your videos of taking apart game systems and Retro Future refurbishing them, inspired me to buy the sewing machine, a Gameboy, and learn to repair and refurbish them.
The lack of a back light was always my complaint about the system. I still think the Advanced SP is the best Gameboy ever made but dang, seeing this Color with the back light 😁😁😁
I wish the SP had a headphone jack tho.

The lack of back light helped out the battery life for the system. If the Gameboy and Gameboy color had backlight then not only would it have probably required more batteries to use to play but the battery life would’ve been as bad as the game gear and Atari lynx.

i would love to see a case that takes GBA internals and put them into a GBC style casing
Kinda tough with the motherboard of the gba, but I like this idea if could be done
would likely require a new motherboard, or some kind of clever ways of cutting the old one, and making new connections between the cut pieces.
not impossible, but most certainly not easy either.
i remember seeing some controller modifications that were done like that, it was either putting ps3 controller inside x360 controller or other way around.
but i'm not sure if gba board was too complex for such mod.
You mean a GBAsp into a GBC style casing, so it doesnt close, u mean?

As a channel run by a person of a certain age , the gameboy played a large part of my life and I’ve owned many over the years. I love these tech dives you do.
As someone else stated, I have no flickering. As for the install, I followed the directions by FunnyPlaying and the horizontal screen alignment was no problem. There is a drop in screen with no trimming, you will need a special new screen as the overall screen size is a hair smaller but still noticeable through the window. I wish we could post pics here lol! I did mine with transparent black and all red buttons.

Brings back memories. Had the exact GBC in purple...wasted a lot of remote control batteries, yes almost got dishonoured by the parents.
You should do a series where subscribers send you their broken systems and you fix them on camera. We would also be able to learn from it.
Many of the sops that sell this screen mod do sell third party shells that are precut, they also sell 3D printed screen centering brackets that align the screen perfectly. I bought this kit from Retro Modding along with a precut screen and it was super easy to put together.
Nice work! I just got done wiring a tp4056 usb-c board and 2000mah lipo battery into a Gameboy Color a couple hours ago. I’m waiting for a local store to open to buy a fresh cutting wheel to finish gutting the battery compartment and cutting a charging port slot in the side so I can finally close her up!
I broke out my old SP the other day. I thought about getting a backlit screen for the DMG but then I remembered I have an SP 😆
I just put in a similar set from Handheld Legend, worked really great. Their version comes with plastic spacers to hold the screen in place. I also used a new purple case, and HHL sells a new front cover that resizes the windo to fit the new screen (which is admittedly a tiny bit smaller than GBC).
Retromodding offer a shell pre-cut for the mod and they sell the IPS kit which they also send with a 3d printed aligning bracket.
Suddenly, memories are flooding back into my mind of playing my purple, transparent Gameboy Color under the covers with this crazy accessory that folds and juts out, lights backward toward the screen with a magnifying glass to make the screen look better. Now I'm working with expensive hardware, building games and VR. Dang, we've come a long way since then (in terms of hardware, software, and general technology for gaming.)
There is a backlit LCD Mod that doesn't require any case modifications available now. I got mine from retromodding
I'm a millennial born in 1988. I never grew up with a handheld. When I was 19 bought a Pearl Blue GameBoy Advance SP (AGS-101), love it. Watching Gamers UA-cam during the pandemic and alot of them my age and older talked about the struggles about the no front/back light and the use of the worm light. I felt like a loser, left out, jealous cuz I never got to experience that struggles that my generation experienced so I bought a Kiwi Green GameBoy Color in 02/2023, I love it. Every time I play a GameBoy/GameBoy Color games I play it on the Color or my Glacier Advance (AGB-001) so I won't fade or mess up the label on the cartridge. The Color and the Advance SP (AGS-101) is my favorite handhelds. I never played a GameBoy or Pocket. One day maybe
Wish I had the confidence to do stuff like this. I can build a gaming PC, even in sff cases in short time but ask me to take apart a console or handheld and cut on it and I will chicken out, lol. That mod really looks awesome, despite the noise. Very nice.

Nintendo needs to rerelease a Gameboy Color with eshop functionality! It’s definitely my favorite handheld!
I did the Midwest Embedded GBC LCD screen mod. It was pretty easy and the screen looks great. I played through the Oracle Zelda games and Link’s Awakening on it. These lcd screen mods make it a joy to play the original GBC.
I really enjoyed this video. Looks so much better. Can’t believe we spent hours gaming tilting towards the light in attempts to see. I can see the point about the advance. I think that was the most comfortable to hold but the color is a nice flush solution for GBC games.
BoxyPixel makes an aluminum shell for this mod and it looks SO good!
The touch brightness thing is super cool.
I love the Gameboy Color. The best thing about it is the fact that it lacks a mandatory backlight. Backlights give me headache, so the GBC is one of the few gaming systems I can comfortably use. The original GBA is pretty neat too, but it lacks IR and IR is too cool to not have.
I just bought a gb colour a few years ago. Paid like $30-35 for it. Works flawlessly and has that nice full color backlit screen. Bought off AliExpress
I used to have a magnifying lens with a light and speakers!!! That thing was a yellow beast!!! It was like I was playing with a purple and yellow brick but it kept my Pokemon Blue sessions going for ages

100% form factor for me, I'm 22 and just last week bought my 1st gameboy color, an atomic purple clear one, bought my first gba sp when I was 15 and it was brilliant at first as it was my first gameboy and I had pokemom emerald but over time the love went due to my hands cramping up due to the size of it, got the color last week got super mario land and its brilliant still small but loads better

I don't have the distortion error thank goodness. And Iove those cases. I used one that came with the ips for my DMG and use it as a travel case for my GBC.

I own a modded PSP GO. I prefer that for handheld gaming. It's compact and also has a nice screen.
Only problem is the artifacts on the right of the screen, which is a known problem with these kits. It's really visible at 11:28
I would have just put some Kapton tape around the visible parts of the display when you were testing it so it would have been easy to see if you had it aligned correctly.
I have that same container its smell proof so my weed don't stank up my car lol
This is super cool but what I want is an original gameboy shell with gameboy color backlit screen that actually plays gameboy color games.
Seeing how the mimi game gear came out, I would buy a Gameboy Release with a nice bright screen.

If the GBC had this backlight back then, the battery would of died quicker and I don’t believe it would’ve sold as well. One of the main selling points for the Gameboy and Gameboy color which its competitors lacked was its fantastic battery life.
This mod was really simple. I did my GBC, the noise sucks it's only on a few games and you get used to it so it's ok. Next up us my GBA!
When people leave developing games for the Gameboy original and Gameboy Color they developed them in such a way that you could actually play them whereas on the Gameboy Advanced they didn't do that they made it so that you couldn't see the screen unless there was some kind of light sorce basically forcing you to buy an SP
Wish this thing had some offset buttons to move the screen square around. Would make this a lot easier.
I would like to send you and old 3ds we have here at home with a broken screen, and a failed repair attempt, so you can do a episode on how to repair it. I would love to recover it because of multiple reasons. I would also be willing to cover the parts cost and shipping. What you think about this?

The guys making the boards should a screen repositioning function to line it up correctly so you don't have to trial and error install. I wouldn't think it'd be extremely difficult, given they already are using a limited section of pixels.

Is that from FunnyPlaying's site? I could've sworn they had the chips on a ribbon cable and not a secondary board. I also thought they worked out the issues with the flickering. It could be a knock off.

Should of got the kit with the 3D printed bracket it saves so much hassle with aligning the screen.
I owned both the GBC/GBA and they were nothing but a pain, I could never see their screens no matter how good the lighting was.
Even when Nintendo went to backlit their screens were really dull.
you are prob talking about frontlit screens like the Nintendo SP 001
I had one of those crappy link port lights and one of those magnifiers with a built in light. Both weren't a great experience.
Huge benefit to GBC over GBA, the color comes in atomic purple.

I think the game boy color didn’t have a backlight because that was the main selling point of the game boy light. The game boy light had a backlight but wasn’t in color, and the game boy color had colorful games but didn’t have a backlight. So if the game boy color had a backlight, there would be no point of buying the game boy light. You were meant to choose between the two systems. Of course, the game boy advance/advance sp just combined the game boy color and game boy light but that was after the two systems released
I still love my NES style GBA SP and that's what I use for all my GB line of games.
you could have used tape to mark where the screen is while you tested it then just peel off after centering it on cover
Is there seriously no option to scale the image up so it uses as much of the bigger screen as possible? Talk about a major oversight! Now THAT would have been an intriguing upgrade, a bigger screen! As the Color has such a teeny tiny screen to begin with. Surely there are mods out there to make the screen bigger on a GBC, along with matching Bezel. Would require more cutting to make the screen hole bigger but I wouldn't mind that at all, that's what a Dremel is for!
really cool, BUT the only reason I would do this is because of the diagonal eight of an inch or so you lose playing GB on GBA. That's the value in this, don't know why you can't zoom or fill the game boy content on that screen, even after a mod...

Yeah the reason for that case looking like that it comes in is pretty clear to chifi iems buyers... thats a repurposed hard case, pretty clever of them actually.

This is dope. I like the color but I’ve been wanting a gba with the modded screen for a minute now. I missed out on a lot of games cuz I was around that “I’m too cool for gameboy” age in the early and mid 2000s haha

cool mod... During testing, why not go ahead and apply the adhesive guide onto the screen? Seems like it would take a little of the trial and error out of it.
Yeah I use the GBA with ags-101 screen and I think that's probably the best for most. Although I think the GameCube is the best way to play GBA games.
Dumb question for you, does the Gameboy Advance back lite screen mod require you to solder it, or does it just drop right in?
Makes you wish if the gameboy had a backlight from the start. Still understandable to keep the cost down.
Do a video on the Gameboy SP. I've had my two models (AG-001 and AG-101) for a good while now and love them still. I gave my kid one so that we could have a shared experience.

Anyone bought this screen from this company? Looked them up on instagram and there are a lot of negative comments saying parts didn’t turn up or they didn’t give them a date for delivery. Was going to buy one but not sure now
Just did the ips mod to my agb gba! wow what a difference going from the ags101 screen to the ips!
why would you remove a 101? save the ips for a 001, 101 is rare in every country but the USA. especially UK. id never dream about removing the 101. worth loads more complete and stock

The Advance SP will always be the ultimate gameboy without the need for modification.

I'm waiting for one of these screen mods to let us use an XL screen on a Gameboy Color or GBA. Like a 4-5 inch with a modded case!
A pixel doubling mod for 3DS would be great too. That IPS mod on the GBA has been looking pretty great lately!

they have a drop in TFT LCD which imo is better than the IPS. brighter and uses less power.
Just use IPS screen for SP and you're good to go my opinion

because nobody makes a screen thats the right size with a pixel ratio that fits
Because nowadays nobody make screen that small for the GBC. And because this is a small market, nobody would out R&D or make the machine to make the small screens. It is not profitable to do so. And to be profitable the price would be so high. Would you spend 100+ on GBC screen?
To line up the screen. What if you had put the sticker on the screen while it was on, then align the sticker with the screen cutout?

i have a gbc i want to mod but i think i would prefer doing my gba first with the usb chargable battery mod and then the ips mod with an ezflash for my ULTIMATE gameboy and then go back later to do the color and quite possibly the sp
