Great video guys! I have seen a lot of "tips" and videos saying you need to get the trail elbow in front of the trail hip on the downswing but mine seems to want to connect more on my right side, like I think you are demonstrating. Thanks for clearing that up. I think you also asked for comments about other issues we might be confused with. I recently watched a Pete Cowen golf instruction video where he demonstrates "opposing wrist forces" in the correct grip. Pete says the wrists need to work against each other, much like wringing out a towel. He says top players do this to keep a stable club face. I've tried it, but it really messes with my head :) I wonder if this it something that you have come across and analysed.?

A great and healthy feeling, thanks!
Thanks for all the work you guys do, appreciate the detail/evidence base you always go into! I've been working on this concept through the lag and lean series you put out. I've had a lot of trouble with the reconnecting early. It almost feels like my body is shifting or turning away from my trail arm as it lowers to reconnect to the body? Any tips for this? I've been experimenting with trying to really keep my body closed for the first part of the downswing (even feeling like my arms lower as the starting move in the downswing) with some mild success although still not really able to hit that P6 position. Otherwise, I had a suggestion for a video that I haven't really seen covered on youtube, although maybe it's just a unique issue for me. In my follow through, my club head never really slings past the line my arms make on face on view (e.g., the L to L look) and at P8, my torso is rotated past the target line. I wonder if I'm not releasing the club properly so it never 'overtakes my arms', or if my arms and upper body are supposed to slow down in the follow-through to allow the club head to fling past. I'm intrigued by your observation in GEARS that the right elbow is never in front of the right hip. The stack and tilt instructors love the bowler drill in which the right hip is kept back and the arms swing in front of the pelvis. This seems to be at odds with what you guys see on GEARs. Do you prescribe the bowler drill to students or do you find it disrupts the correct sequence. Thanks.
I would really like to see this move in Gears as it relates to the Driver. I'm not yet convinced that the trail elbow lowers as much or as soon with the driver swing. Yes, you won't get any height in your backswing and have too much depth. They mentioned this in a video for people who overdo the towel drill (towel tucked into both armpits and across chest) and try to do full swings.
Very nice. Quick question, how does shallowing the club work together with the magic move? Are they one and the same? I don't think they are separate, but I don't think that I can think of them as separate when I'm trying to hit the ball.
The dirty little secret is the club doesn’t shallow in the downswing relative to the ground or the player. It only looks like it does relative to an arbitrary static camera angle which doesn’t which typically causes more confusion than provides answers. All good players manage the rate of steepening coming down. The club gets flipped upside down in the backswing. It has to get flipped right side up coming down. It just doesn’t like so simple because of all the body rotation while that happening. We’ll cover this a lot more this year!
Can you please clarify something for me? Is the lowering of the humerus happening via shoulder extension or adduction? Sagittal plane or frontal? Or a combination of both? Thanks!
I know it takes time for the body to get used to this motion if u haven’t done it ur whole life but how can you get this motion to feel more powerful it just feels like there’s not enough there with arms dropping and reconnecting and the body pivoting like the slow motion blender drill if that makes sense
Ohhh..good catch on external connection not lowering. That can narrow it too... So you answered my question. But here's the one I went to bed and woke up with so I have to ask... The video where you say by left arm parallel the weight needs to already be forward and the percentage should stay tight throughout the rest of the swing.. My question is how can you...OR.. Does the weight percentage not ACTUALLY change much... With all the pressure when pushing up with the left leg? Is it the mass doesn't change but you can increase the pressure all day kinda thing?
@@rickmiller8893 don’t over think it lol. Too much of what the body is doing has been attributed to GRF lately. It’s a factor but not the factor. The weight does move forward as the pressure vector angles back. But that’s most done without trying to push back, at all.
I’ve been working on my right arm for weeks. I have a very slight flip at impact and have been trying to diagnose it. On a DTL view, I noticed my elbow is pointed a little back where most pros are vertical at P6. I’m physically able to externally rotate, but don’t feel that at all in my swing. Can you explain the importance of externally rotating the trail shoulder in a future video?
Good question! Most pros from DTL at 6 will have it angled a bit back (less than vertical). And definitely DO NOT try to go into ext rotation. That’s a terrible idea and something we haven’t seen a single pro measured to do. Checkout our Pros vs Ams video on shallowing for what does happen 😉
When the right elbow (for a RH golfer) reconnects to the side of the body, should the right palm of your hand be facing up to the sky or down to the ball? I feel like I’ve seen (confusing and) various takes on the “delivery position” and it seems to me in this video, it’s closer to “palm up to sky” which I assume means more club face rotation to square it before impact.
How to make this move without feeling like I’m chopping the ground behind the ball.. is that common sequence problem you guys have drills to change something else in my sequence to allow this lowering/reconnection to happen?
Love this move. As you lower the trail arm towards the rib cage, what is your trail wrist doing? Are you actively extending the trail wrist to prevent the clubface from opening so it will be square at impact?
Great drill. I can do this in slow motion, but when I try in full motion I revert to my old habits. How many reps should it take to master? Would love to see more above camera angles on the swoosh move from lead arm parallel in the backswing to lead arm parallel in the downswing.
I struggle with hypermobility, and this move has changed my golf. But I also feel like it puts a lot of pressure on my lead rotator cuff, and have already subluxed it once. Essentially feels like I’m creating almost more potential energy in rotation than I can hold with that should in a weak position. Any thoughts/ideas?
@AthleticMotionGolf not on its own, it creates a ton of force in a downswing though (as demonstrated). Rear shoulder is in a strong position to handle that, lead shoulder less so in my case, and my ligaments are loose (hypermobility). So my lead shoulder wants to subluxate/dislocate toward the clubhead/hands.
Which body part should dominate this feel/movement: Arm? Hands? Elbow? Biceps? Shoulder? I’ve had my best results/performance feeling dropping my shoulder but sometimes I get stuck/hang back/drops too much which causes other issues
Would you recommend keeping the upper arm attached for 3/4 shots such as pitch shots, I wouldn't have thought there was any value in disconnecting and reconnecting it for a 3/4 or less swing. In a full swing then it should leave and re-attache during transition/early downswing otherwise we'd lose a lot of power. (hence why we just can't leave it there for all shots). Also having the right elbow pit facing away will help this move.
it depends on how high you want it to go and the amount of spin you are after.... but assuming you're not a pro, I'mma advise you to do whatever you're most comfortable and confident with lol
“Connection” isn’t the best way to think about it. It’s too vague of a feel. The facts are the arm lifts in the takeaway between 5-15 degrees. That puts the club on plane vs having it work inside. Many ams lower it during that time by 5-15 degrees. Possibly from chasing “connection”
You can tell when someone is doing this right because the shaft comes back down below the trail shoulder from the behind view, anyway thanks guy's great stuff as always 🍻👍👌
The lowering of the trail elbow should happen naturally when you rotate your hips, right? You're not trying to pull the elbow down to start the downswing, right?
Good video, but it would help to show where on your torso you aim to connect your trail elbow. You could use a red sticker on your shirt to show it, such as the side of the top rib, or in front of the ribs. It's hard to tell. Also, do you feel like you are pointing the pointy part of the bottom of the elbow at the target? Any little tricks like that would help. Thank you for all the great videos.
get some kind of rod you can stick through your front belt loops so that it's parallel with the ground and pointed at your target.... now when you take a swing, your hands and club should never fall behind where that stick is on your back side... if you play around with that you'll start to feel where the reconnection point is (if you need help finding the feel that is)
Just lower it to the side of your ribcage. Or you can think of matching the underside vertical seam of your sleeve to the vertical seem on the side of your shirt.
Can someone please tell me why you want the hands in front of your hip at parallel in the downswing? Mine get there just after parallel why is this a major problem?
This video explains why the hands are not in front of the hips, but how it can look like they are. You can decide for yourself and the quality of your shots if it's something you need to work on or throw into the column of "this doesn't apply to me" 🙂
@ I’m going to watch again, I got the elbow reconnecting but I’ve been going through a lot of swing changes and have been lacking clubhead speed so I’m looking for answers
@ I’m still not sure of the elbow staying connected the whole time or not is a good or bad thing to try for some people say it is look at Ben hogan and others like yourselves say not too
@ Ben hogan didn’t keep it pinned. Nor did Snead, Nelson, Trevino, Nicklaus, Watson, Sing, Woods, Scheffler, Rahm, Xander, or any other dominant winner you can think of. Trying to do the opposite of all the best players is probably not a good idea. 😉
@ yes and I mean this will all respect but some pros disagree that hogan and others didn’t keep it pinned and my thinking is it’s not supposed to stay connected but it doesn’t flair either and stays in front of the seam of your shirt on your side
You guys show that the right way to shallow is actually the easiest way, love it. Harvey is probably rolling over in his grave seeing what’s on the internet around this!
@ I tried it with short irons and it does but I didn't find the same success with driver, and hence why I ask. I'll assume it's too variable for you to give a concrete answer on this one. Keep the great content rolling! Thanks for reply
Curious ... over all your years of teaching what concept(s) have you taught that looking back have you realized were wrong and what should it have been instead?
Not as many since we've been using 3D and been fortunate to work with so many great players. You really start to see the same things over and over again. But going back before that, many of the things still being taught today. Ext rotation to shallow, moving the arms across the body for shaft lean, getting the elbow in front... all things that just do not happen.
@ Yes, he did. You're gaslighting. His right elbow was virtually glued to his side all through the backswing and down to the ball. It's right there in countless videos here on UA-cam.
@ haha it was the first video that came up. You can also find more “exceptions” in the Hogan video you have posted in your channel. The golf swing is a hobby for you, it ain’t for us.

No we don’t see that with our students but I would need to see your swing to see what the issue is
Love this move. As you lower the trail arm towards the rib cage, what is your trail wrist doing? Are you actively extending the trail wrist to prevent the clubface from opening so it will be square at impact?
No the motion does that for free
Great drill. I can do this in slow motion, but when I try in full motion I revert to my old habits.
How many reps should it take to master?
Would love to see more above camera angles on the swoosh move from lead arm parallel in the backswing to lead arm parallel in the downswing.
It takes as many reps it takes. 🤷♂️. The problem is most people will not go slow enough to learn the movements
@@AthleticMotionGolf Does the trail arm externally rotate in the downswing?
@@richardjohnson-tb5pz In the backswingm, yes, but not in the downswing 👊
Lowering the right arm while maintaining the wrist angles in transition? At would point during downswing would you unhinge the wrists?
@@Whoelse455 the unhinging starts up around lead arm parallel.
@@olafforkbeard4782 does lowering your arm to your side hurt?
@AthleticMotionGolf not on its own, it creates a ton of force in a downswing though (as demonstrated). Rear shoulder is in a strong position to handle that, lead shoulder less so in my case, and my ligaments are loose (hypermobility). So my lead shoulder wants to subluxate/dislocate toward the clubhead/hands.
Like a bicep curl
Which body part should dominate this feel/movement: Arm? Hands? Elbow? Biceps? Shoulder? I’ve had my best results/performance feeling dropping my shoulder but sometimes I get stuck/hang back/drops too much which causes other issues
Make the correct movement, then tell us which part you need to feel to make it happen 👊😉
Good point!
The lowering of the trail elbow should happen naturally when you rotate your hips, right? You're not trying to pull the elbow down to start the downswing, right?
@@jeffhwunyeechen correct 👍
I’ve got a steep angle of attack 6degrees while swing in In-out quite drastically 6-8degrees. How is that possible?
@@themalaygolfer 6 down isn’t steep. As long as the club is moving down, it’s moving out (in to out) 👊🙂
Byron Nelson used to advise to put your right elbow into your right front pant pocket... :
@@stevelang3109 what did he know? 👊😅
They use to call this drill back in the 70's and 80's..............."Ring the Bell" (church bell) with your right elbow/arm.
You guys show that the right way to shallow is actually the easiest way, love it. Harvey is probably rolling over in his grave seeing what’s on the internet around this!
@@robkocerha4017 wow what a thought! How much better would instruction be if the legends like Harvey had the internet?!
I know everyone's biology is different, but would you say on avg one could accomplish this move by squeezing the lat muscle at the top of the swing?
@@IAM-xf9ir does that produce the right movement for you?
@ I tried it with short irons and it does but I didn't find the same success with driver, and hence why I ask. I'll assume it's too variable for you to give a concrete answer on this one.
Keep the great content rolling! Thanks for reply
My gosh, there are SO many "secrets" in golf. No wonder it's so hard! 😅
@@hammockmonk haha yes!
Its a downswing. Not an out to the ball swing. Hand path is straight down arpund your rotation but its tight to the body.

Why do practice swings feel so much better than real swings
Curious ... over all your years of teaching what concept(s) have you taught that looking back have you realized were wrong and what should it have been instead?
Not as many since we've been using 3D and been fortunate to work with so many great players. You really start to see the same things over and over again. But going back before that, many of the things still being taught today. Ext rotation to shallow, moving the arms across the body for shaft lean, getting the elbow in front... all things that just do not happen.
Do you associate the amateurs fault with trying to pull the hands down and not the elbow reconnection.
Yep that’s part of it
Why not minimize variables and basically keep the right elbow glued to the right side, like the true GOAT Ben Hogan?
@@JeremiahAlphonsus hogan didn’t do it either
@ Yes, he did. You're gaslighting. His right elbow was virtually glued to his side all through the backswing and down to the ball. It's right there in countless videos here on UA-cam.
@ except for the part where it isn’t glued to his side 🤦♂️. Apology accepted 👍 ua-cam.com/video/9F6bR9UGEvs/v-deo.htmlsi=nVCjnK4bUFSkIvux
@@AthleticMotionGolf You found one exception versus the many thousands of videos showing his elbow glued.
@ haha it was the first video that came up. You can also find more “exceptions” in the Hogan video you have posted in your channel. The golf swing is a hobby for you, it ain’t for us.
