They used plenty of CGI, they just used it with some restraint. They did everything they could in camera with practical effects and covered the gaps with CGI. That is always how Del Toro has rolled.

(based on a fan theory I read online, because there is no Information on him on the movie wiki except his name and that he was used as a guide) Is just some random person Hellboy was able to find and resurrect with magical artefacts because his soul was restless. (what sounds plausible as hellboy talks to the magical compass and says: "Come on baby! Find me a talker" and follows its guide until he finds Ivans grave) To add myself something to this theory. You can clearly see a noose around his neck. Suggesting he died through suicide or execution (probably execution because they didn't remove the noose) Surely the death by suicide or being executed (rightfully or unrightfully) was the reason his soul became restless and didn't pass on to the afterlife. As his soul was still on earth Hellboy was therefore able to find and resurrect him. Also as "Dashutri Kerr" commented. It is probably also a refference to the hellboy comic "The Corpse". Where Hellboy has to find a final resting place for a talking corpse with a noose around his neck he carries on his back.
