I’ve watched this movie a dozen times, and I just now realized the glove that Rasputin was wearing was their attempt of Hellboy’s hand of doom.

At 7:48 when the grenade blew off his hand he can be heard screaming . Nice level of detail that they made it very faint but is a nice touch

Well, when you see a live grenade lobbed into the base of an interdimensional portal, one tends to get worried. For all he knew, that grade exploding could close the portal, or widen the breach until it consumed the entire earth.
Something else to note: when he’s shot in this scene, he looks down at himself, to make sure he’s uninjured. However he became what he was in 2004, he was much more human back then.

the overall tone and feel this movie had is something that cant be remade.

*Del Toro, wrote an origin for the assassin* that he was a gifted piano player obsessed with self harm and perfection.. he meets Rasputin who effectively turns him into a zombie.. honestly deserves its own movie.
Damn. Good thing he never met Slaanesh or the Cenobites or he would've been even creepier.
Opposed to the comic where he was just a regular dude who wore a gas mask to avoid germs and got to the future by being frozen.
He was an opera singer actually… Child singer until his voice broke at puberty.. I think that itself played a part in his SH.

Separate movies on the backstories of Kroenen, Abe sapien, Rasputin, Ogdru Jahad, etc. were needed. I hoped that more sequels would come based on the first movie. But, alas ...😢😢😢

@@kylemuncal7047 I have the same problem. Movie directors probably aren't watching movies for the same reason as the fans are. They don't take it seriously enough and it ruins scenes for me in my favourite movies.
The fac they used the Wilhelm scream in that scene made it less scary but more hilarious.
One of the best opening scenes in any comic book movie.

I don't know if it's intentional or not but I love how Rasputin refers to Hitler as "Herr Hitler," basically calling him "Mister Hitler" when everyone else in Nazi Germany referred to him as "the Fuhrer." Probably made that SS guy all pissy XD
My guess is he didn’t see hitler as his leader / master / ruler. He had his own agenda and hitler only helped him along his way

What I'm shocked at was that nobody was speaking German.
There were glimpses of German. “Feuer Frei”=is the order to Shoot or fire. “Granaten”=Grenade. It’s there but isn’t.
Gregory could see the future so he already knew that the Nazis wouldn’t win.

@Alfie Martin Lol, you just reminded me in school we watched documentaries about his descent into madness and the occult as his beloved 3rd Reich came crashing down around him, sending kids to fight his war.
But think of all those scientists and crazy human experiments that escaped to Argentina, Peru and the South American west coast.
I may have this wrong but I have vague memories of the Nazi's establishing their very own colony in Argentina.

If Kroenen’s appearance was a ill sign, then he’s really one of the most fearsome Nazis in Germany.
This is one of my favourite opening scenes in any movie it does what a good opening scene should do: intrudece the audience to the tone and feel of the movie, introduce some of the main characters and keep the viewer engaged so that they would want to see the rest of the movie and not just leave or turn it off after the opening. Also the acting and special effects are pretty good, especially for the year this was released.
This Hellboy intro is waaaay better than the newer Hellboy movie. Sucks they never made a part 3 with this cast.
Kronen was more in his prime in this scene than the majority of the movie, a few modifications here and there but not enough to make him a walking corpse he's also in his late forties here where he's over 100 years old during the movies present day. And his blood is definitely still flowing through his body than sand.
It's amazing how naive the villains are in these kinds of movies. A being like that would never give any power to them.
Well that was Rasputin's plan. The Nazis were fooled, Kroenen was his mole in the SS, and the girl was madly in love with him.
He failed to get the Russian occult to serve his chaos gods in ww1, he got the Nazis to use their advanced tech to make him a hand of doom and portal, but his plan was foiled at the last second, and the third try the world grew stagnant with peace so he didn't need to trick a nation to do his work for him and there was already a boy from hell walking around with his own hand of doom, he just needed to convince him to open the portal.
So i might be wrong, but his arm setup, its supposed to be like a fake key to substitute hellboys arm correct?

It’s a facsimile. Hence why it didn’t open the right portal: only the Hand of Doom can open the gates and free the old gods of chaos. Anything else will just open a random door to a random dimension, a highly unstable door at that.

Imagine if Stephen king wrote a Cthulu story that occurred during the events of World War II. And someone like Guillermo Del Toro directed the movie based on the book. How amazing would that be?
Some of his novels take inspiration from lovecraft here and there.
The only problem is the film's often water the cosmic part down.

Just plain awful
Guillermo truly loved the source material and added his personal touch and style into his adaptation, the reboot tried way to hard to be like this one and failed at it. It should’ve been its own thing and create its own style and identity while being comics accurate at the same time.
A pity that Mignola is jealous of del Toro and does not allow him to finish the trilogy. He prefers to take out one failure after failure.

If Kroenen would have kept his blade out he'd have been able to reach the grenade
Considering how close that thing was to exploding I doubt it would have made much of a difference

If you look closely the portal seems to take off chunks of his glove/hand. It'd probably Just mess up his blade even worse.

@Hazardeur Standard combat load was at minimum 10x 8-rd en- bloc clips (plus the one in the rifle) for the M1 Garand in a M1928 cartridge belt. But for this high-risk mission, they decide to give them just one or two clips? Yeah, that sounds highly plausible. The guys ran like idiots into the guy with swords because the plot needed it, that's it.

My uncle in law Bill Hoyland playing Von Krupt brilliantly here: “Ze Fuhrer does not not look kindly on failure”. Looks the part in full Totenkopf black, too. Great actor now sadly departed, see him also escorting Luke to Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi and trying to destroy a secret decoder aboard a sinking British spy ship at the start of the Bond film For Your Eyes Only.

The Hellboy movie came out back in 2004, the same year I was born. I love the movie Hellboy with Ron Perlman
Unfortunately Ron Perlman may be too old for the physical role. However, there could be more Hellboy Animated films like Sword of Storms and Blood and Iron. Doug Jones and Selma Blair could return as well. There would only have to be someone else to voice Professor Broom since the passing of John Hurt. May he Rest In Peace.

3:53 I think someone in the costume department didn't do their homework, that SS rank insignia is wrong, the white dots should be arranged at a 45 degree angle.
Might be due to some laws in some countries that prohibit movies from displaying that, I've seen this change in other movies too. They have a choice: alter some logos and symbols or not show that movies at all.
