Raul Julia was a legend. His last movie was Street Fighter with JCVD. As terrible as that movie was, Julia was dying when he made it, and did it because his kids asked him iirc, and put all his heart into playing the maniacal dictator M. Bison.
"Street Fighter" is actually a fantastic movie. And we're talking about a VIDEOGAME movie. All the characters were there, the humor was excellent and the film itself didn't take itself too serious either. Yeah Raul was the GOAT and he was taken from us too soon..... Frank Langella also approached the role of Skeletor in "Masters of the Universe" because his son loved He-Man. And he gave us an absolute stellar performance.
Interesting fact for "Addams Family Values", Raul Julia (Gomez) went through cancer treatment while filming. Anjelica Huston also said that he "never missed a day's work, we took Tango lessons, he never complained". They remained friends until his death shortly after the movie's release. RIP Raul Julia
Is it true that there might have been one or two more films if Raul Julia had been well?? I'd like to think so, also I find it difficult to picture anyone else as Gomez & Morticia.
@@ianlove1215 I remember reading somewhere that Sonnenfeld and the writers had another script in the works for a third but Raul passed before it was finalized so they tossed it.
Fun thing about the Morticia dress... The wearer literally had to be sewn into it. This absolute form-fitting nature resulted in some very scene-specific poses. if you had to sit, you were always sitting. If you had to to be upright, you were always upright. So imagine it, in scenes where she had to be standing and/or walking, she could not sit down and the best rest she could hope for on breaks was to be propped up against a padded plank. Glamour has it's cost.
According to Angelica Huston, she hated wearing the outfit. It was tight and uncomfortable. People don't realize how much suffering actors endure for their craft.
Fun fact: The comic is supposed to play as an absolute reverse to the typical suburban family of the time. Which is why Morticia and Gomez actually interact with their children and are deeply interested in their day to day lives. Instead of the children being an accessory/burden to the parents and seen but not heard.
As well as a husband constantly simping for his wife, when back in the day the wife was all but meant to stay one step behind her husband. They are the modern ideal, and we love them.
@@happyninja42 in the satirical sense yes, also @robertgronewold3326 I wouldnt call Gomez a simp he legitimately adores her and she adores him, they are not seeking approval they are just filled with a desire to make each other happy, people could learn a thing or two from them, like how to make your partner FEEL attractive and desireable
Certified therapists have remarked that Gomez and Morticia are the ultimate married couple goals. It becomes even more clear how awesome they are as parents in the next film, supporting their kids even when they aren’t happy with certain things. That will make more sense after you watch the second film. For me they are the top tier perfect pair and no other couple, fictional or otherwise, beats them.
It’s a testament to the state of minds of the ignorant people when they are talking about the “perfect marriage” of two people in a scripted movie…. Especially a ridiculously fictional movie like this. Unreal.
Back in 2000 TV Guide held a bunch of polls for things like Best TV Family and Best TV Detective. The winner of the poll for Greatest TV Couple were Gomez and Morticia Addams.
fun fact: Morticia’s lighting, specifically around her eyes, was inspired by Bela Lugosi’s Dracula from 1931. They specifically lighted around his eyes to show Dracula’s hypnotic power, and it’s one of the more iconic aspects from that film. They payed homage to the movie by lighting Morticia’s face in the the same way.
It was also a popular way of lighting leading ladies back in the early days of cinema to emphasize their eyes. They would also sometimes film them deliberately slightly out of focus to disguise the supposed 'imperfections' in their face.
I started to say the same thing! She is SO good in her role as Debbie.. Plus I love the whole side story of Wednesday & Pugsley at summer camp with school nemesis Amanda & love interest Joel & the idea of introducing a new family member in Baby Pubert to the group. It may just be my favorite of the two for these reasons alone..
The Addams family are the definition of "family goals." The parents are madly in love with each other, they love and care for their children, and the whole family unit is so supportive. We love to see it. And the film's sequel is proof that the second film IS better than the first!! Anjelica Huston & Christina Ricci were PERFECTLY cast in their roles!
The Cinema Therapy guys have done two shows about the Addams family. Those guys are great. ua-cam.com/video/8sFitCMQqV8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ZU758cVcfao/v-deo.html
@@andidreyes5323 And I love that they didn't make it complicated. I always compare this (and the Brady Bunch movies) to the Bewitched movie where they made it sooo convoluted & also casted pretty badly.
also they support their kids' playtime without abandoning their responsibilities, they don't judge or make fun of "normal" people, they keep an open mind when things are uncertain, I could go on. They are TOTALLY "family goals!" The "college first" gag is hilarious but like still super in-character because OF COURSE they'd be all for whatever their kids wanna be when they grow up as long as they still do the responsible and considerate thing in raising them encouraging an education. I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I never get tired of seeing people discover this movie
Just a little note: the Addams Family pinball table, which came out with this movie, is still considered to be one of the greatest of its kind. I played it all the time when I was living in the college dorms.
I strongly agree. I was a pinball champ/fanatic in the early 90s. My favorite 5 pinball games were #1 Adams Family #2 Star Wars #3 Elvira and the Party Monsters #4 Hook #5 Hurricane.
They actually released it recently for Pinball FX, if you're a gamer. I totally snatched that one up, it's easily in my top 5 pinball tables of all time (The others being Indiana Jones, Super Mario Bros., Tron Legacy, and ummm... maybe Terminator 2).
Yea but that is lame compared to the actual real life game. The FX version has a pretty wide flipper gap. The real life one is adjustable at least so arcade owners could put on longer flippers and such. @@vodengc520
Gomez and Morticia truly are the healthiest fictional marriage. They are totally devoted to each other and both want nothing more than for their partner and family to be happy, even if it is weird to outside observers.
The Addamses have never cared about outside perception, though. They may come off as naïve at times, but deep down they know they're strange and they revel in that fact.
Fun facts: In the TV series, Ted Cassidy did double duty as he played *both* Lurch and Thing. -In the TV series, Fester was Morticia's uncle and not Gomez's brother. -In this movie, they adapted the comics version with Lurch being a mute. In the TV version, Lurch could speak and even had one of the most memorable catch phrases "you rang?"
Lurch also often growled respectfuly or disrespectfully, but you always could understand what he meant. Thing also underwent a small change, as he in both the cartoons and the series was alway shown as an arm reaching through any opening or box of the Addams house. The movie was the first time depicting him free roaming. This and Christina Ricci's portrayal of Wednesday were pioneering the later istallments.
And Grandma was originally Gomez's mother, Eudora Addams in the TV show. Grandma in the movies is Morticia's mother, Esmerelda Frump, but in the 1960s TV show, Morticia's mother was called Hester Frump and she was Uncle Fester's sister. She was played by Margaret Hamilton who played the wicked witch of the west in _The Wizard of Oz._
You simped out on Morticia 15 times, and who can blame you. It should be noted that Christina Ricci wasn't the original Wednesday Addams. In the 1960's Addams Family TV series, Lisa Loring played Wednesday.
Angelica Houston is also in Ever After: A Cinderalla Story! You'd love her in that, too. :) And yes, watching this in the 90s was a trip. So good, so fun! I love the whole Addams family vibe, it's like, here's the utterly quirky, goth family fascinated with death, but they're also the most loving and supportive of each other.
So many people posting "I want a romance like The Joker and Harley" like...NO! That is a textbook abusive relationship! If you want your weird, freaky romance, Gomez and Morticia are RIGHT there.
At first, I thought Hallobeans was a great time to do Family Values but as I read the reply, Oh YES; It truly IS a Thanksgiving Film. And as Ashleigh saw this one, Family Values really needs to be on the Next watch! I don't know which I like more but Wednesday has a better role with better lines?
Fun fact to get the kids to cry after Morticia tells them a story is that the director told them they were all getting their shots right after they were finished.
The casting between these two movies is nothing short of perfect. Everyone plays their roles like they were literally born to embody their characters. Also, goes without saying: Raul Julia and Angelica Houston are like the absolute sexiest versions of Gomez and Morticia. They are just constantly on FIRE for each other.
Ashleigh: "I didn't know Christina Ricci was the original Wednesday! My Brian: Don't ay anything. Just leave it alone. Me: Well, actually, the original depiction of the Adams Family was a 1960s era TV show which was, in turn, based on a series of New Yorker cartoons by Charles Adams. In the TV show, Wednesday was played by Lisa Loring, who had a rollercoaster life and died in January of this year. It was that performance that Jenna Ortega studied the most for research into he performance as Wednesday in the new series, "Wednesday." In fact, Jenna took a dance move that Lisa Loring performed on the TV show and incorporated it into her now-famous dance scene in the Wednesday series! My Brain: *sigh*
They're creepy and they're spooky, mysterious and kooky, they're all together Ooky, The Addams Family, they're house is a museum when people come to see em, The Addams Family. Neat, Sweet, Petite. So gather with your shawl on, a broomstick you can crawl on, we're gonna make a call on, the Addams Family.
Actually the original Wednesday was Lisa Loring, who sadly died earlier this year. She was Wednesday in the Addams Family tv series that ran from 1964-1966, with 64 episodes of this iconic tv series. The tv series, in turn, was based on a comic strip by Charles Addams. The films remain true to the essence of the original, and all things Addams Family are just absolutely iconic, in large part due to the deep love and affection between the family members that is incredibly healthy and supportive and accepting of all of their quirkiness and kookiness.
God, had she lived we might've been able to get all 3 Wednesdays in the same show. A 4th if NBC/Desilu wasn't still pissed at Melissa Hunter for showing them up at their own IP.
The original wasn't a comic strip, it was a series of single-panel gag cartoons. Of the 1,300 cartoons Addams drew, 58 featured what we now recognise as the Addams Family. None of the characters had names until the TV show.
Fun Fact: They had trouble getting funding for the movie because "who would be interested in a has-been TV show from the 1960s?, until a day when a bunch of studio executives were in a shuttle from the airport when one of the producers of this movie went "Dun-dun-dundun" *snap snap* and the entire van sang the whole theme song from start to finish. That got the film a greenlight. Also, Wednesday Addams in this film was my first big celebrity childhood crush. Don't look at me like that, I was 11 years old at the time, it was age-apprporiate.
Ricci's Wednesday was my first major crush too, and we were about the same age. Pretty sure she was that for a lot of boys that age, and some girls too.
My son worked in a theater when this came out and Angelica Houston came in one night with friends to watch it. She was great with the kids working and autographed programs. He still has his.
This movie was a huge financial hit but it was critically panned unlike Back to the Future which was a smash hit all around. So, Christopher Lloyd’s Doc. Brown character is way more famous. Also, Jackie Coogan’s portrayal of Uncle Fester on the TV show is probably the more well known and beloved depiction amongst the fandom.
I prefer the original cast, every character on the tv show is my favorite version except for Wednesday, Lisa Loring was excellent but I prefer Ricci, but Gomez, Morticia, Lurch and Uncle Fester were better in the 1960's
When I worked at Paramount, I was in charge of the quarterly financial reporting for Addams Family and the sequel. Even before DVD and streaming, they were quite profitable. Lady Colyton, the second wife and former lawyer of Charles Addams, who conned him into signing over his cartoons’ rights to her, used to call me up several times a year when she was going on vacation to give me her contact information in case I needed to get ahold of her…which was really funny to all of us in my department, because never was there ever any kind of need to contact any client that way. Anyway. On one occasion my boss talked to her, and didn’t refer to her as “Lady” Colyton, and she quickly reminded him that “She was a Lady, and would be addressed as such.” 😆 But in all fairness, overall she was a really nice, considerate woman, and I got a kick out of talking to her.
15:45 Gray's Anatomy is a reference book of human anatomy written by Henry Gray, illustrated by Henry Vandyke Carter, and first published in London in 1858. It has gone through multiple revised editions and the current edition, the 42nd (October 2020), remains a standard reference, often considered "the doctors' bible". The television series is “Grey’s Anatomy,” with a different spelling of the name (Grey vs Gray).
Christina Ricci may not have been the original Wednesday, but she certainly set the standard for that character, imo. She portrayed Wednesday masterfully.
I agree. Lisa Loring was charming on the TV series, but Christina Ricci put so much craft into the role, she really (re)defined the character. Jenna Ortega clearly took that ball and ran with it. (And for the record, I think she's fantastic.)
Agreed. Loring's portrayal in the TV series was good for the time period but Christina redefined the role. When I saw Christina interviewed on an Australian TV show, I was surprised to hear that she never saw the original TV series. And she was completely different to her onscreen character!
@@TheMrPeteChannel And it sounded like she was the only one who cared about the character. She kept having to reject bad ideas from the writers, and she thought the idea of a love triangle did not fit the show.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this & cannot WAIT for you to watch “Addams Family Values” & meet my other Childhood Queen besides Morticia Addams: Debbie. Joan Cusack (who plays Debbie in AFV) is a brilliant yet incredibly underrated Actress & she was downright iconic in that movie. There’s nothing about her that wasn’t great. The only sad thing is that after she gave her memorable speech about Ballerina Barbie, she wasn’t in the Barbie movie. Don’t know why but that upsets me.
BTW, You were asking about Thing's back story: In the series, In a flashback episode on how Gomez and Morticia met, it is revealed that Thing has been with the Addams family since Gomez himself was a child, suggesting Thing is the son of an earlier generation of hand-servants. Thing, overall.
Also Raul Julia started out on BROADWAY! He's the lead villain protagonist in The Threepenny Opera, a VERY dark musical. Man could act, fight, dance, and SING.
It’s funny that you mentioned Thing’s special effects because I loved reruns of the old tv series when I was a kid, and Thing was always coming out of a box or from behind something for obvious reasons. so when this movie came out and Thing was scurrying around free it blew our damn minds
There's another actor in this movie you might have recognized. Carel Struycken, who played Lurch here, was Grandpa Flick in Doctor Sleep. The reason the Thing effects work well is because it was played by Christopher Hart, a well known magician. Christina Ricci was not the original Wednesday. Lisa Loring, who died recently, played her in the 60's TV show. It says a lot about the talent of Raul Julia that they attempted a third Addams Family movie in 1998 with Tim Curry in the role, and not even he could pull it off.
Carel Struycken will always be, after Lurch of course, the servant to Lwaxana Troi in Star Trek TNG as far as I'm concerned. Made such a convincing alien and barely wore any prosthetics.
@@jonnydarkfang2816 Yes, Mr. Homn was also my first introduction to Carel Struycken. The second was in Twin Peaks as The Dream Giant. Funny, as the original Lurch (i.e. 60s TV), Ted Cassidy, also played an alien on an episode of the original Star Trek ('Ruk' in "What are little girls made of?")
@@Cau_No - And Ted Cassidy was also the voice of the of the Incredible Hulk (the grunts and growls) & the Narrator of that live action TV series starring Bill Bixby & Lou Ferrigno.
12:49 “I bet this movie was so much fun to film!” Nope: It was decided that Morticia should have eyes which slanted upwards at the sides, an effect which was achieved by attaching an elastic strap to the back of Angelica's head via fabric tabs glued at her temples, which pulled the corners of her eyes upwards. A second strap was added to balance the appearance of the lower part of her face with the upper. The bands caused extended discomfort to her and, unless she removed them at lunchtime, she would suffer severe headaches and rashes later in the day. Removing the bands for a break entailed hours of extra work in both removing and then re-applying her makeup and wig. On top of this, the bands would snap at the slightest turn of her head, causing yet more grueling repair time. Eventually, she learned to pivot and turn on her feet without moving her upper body or head.
I read about that years ago, and as a frequent headache sufferer myself, it made my respect for her as an actress ramp up ten-fold, because when I have severe ones, I can barely function well enough to sit and do nothing. For her to be able to deal with lighting and set commotion and all, and still deliver that performance… mad respect.
15:44 Yes it is a book. " 'Gray's Anatomy: The Anatomical Basis of Clinical Practice' In 1858, Drs. Henry Gray and Henry Vandyke Carter created a book for their surgical colleagues that established an enduring standard among anatomical texts. "
The Addams family began as a series of one-panel cartoons drawn by Charles Addams for the New Yorker magazine. The house was inspired by the same Edward Hopper 1925 painting, House by the Railroad (of a still-standing house in Haverstraw, NY) that inspired the house in Pyscho. The cartoon did not name the characters. The cartoon series inspired the tv sitcom, which gave the characters the names, and this in turn inspired this movie series, plus a bunch of other spinoffs. By the way, has Beans lost any weight?
@@ianobrien3248 It is a classic example of a "Second-empire" house often described as "in the French mode" - or typically called Mansard from the type of roof. Extremely popular in the 1870's and has come to typify the Victorian era.
There were some legal problems because the filmmakers licensed the rights to the cartoon characters, who didn't have names, but used the names from the TV show, which they didn't get the rights to.
As men, we all aspire to be Gomez Addams.... Suave, smooth, debonnaire, and a the total epitome of a loyal and loving family man. But deep in out hearts, we all know we will all end up as Uncle Fester.
I am a HUGE fan of the Addams Family TV series from the 60s, and until I saw this movie, I never thought anyone could play Gomez as well as John Astin in the series, but Raul Julia absolutely NAILS the role!!! 👏👏👏👏 It's such a shame he only got to play Gomez in 2 movies. He passed away way too soon. 😞😥 May he rest in peace.
@@dylanburton4955 He was a stage trained actor, so he had that impressive delivery when he needed to use it, and that fit Gomez perfectly. He also had an awesome singing voice. There should be clips on UA-cam or the Internet, if you want to check it out. ✌️
Playing Gomez, Morticia and Wednesday are the roles Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston and Christina Ricci are best known for even today. Great movie, great reaction! Addams Family Values was a bit less well-received but certainly has its moments, looking forward to your reaction to that one :)
It was so heartbreaking to when Raul Julia passed on and Anjelica and Christopher Lloyd respected him so much that when talks of a 3rd movie came out, out of respect for him, they declined to return to their roles.
The Addams Family started as a print cartoon by Charles Addams, which appeared mostly in The New Yorker magazine between the 1930's and 1980's. In fact, the opening scene of this film came directly from one of his cartoons, with the family up on the roof preparing to pour boiling oil down on the carolers. Although Addams' strip was always intended as a funny cartoon, it was much more macabre with darker comedy. The lighter take came about with the 1964 TV sitcom. In fact, the characters didn't even have names, until the series, when Addams had to come up with them specifically at that point.
What a great reaction Ashleigh, your laugh is so infectious. My two favourite lines are "Are they made from real girl scouts" and "I'm a homicidal maniac, they look just like everyone else". I'm now impatiently waiting for your Adams Family Values reaction.
LOVED your rendition of "Deck the halls". 🤣 No seriously I DID!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰 In fact, I think I'll "have to" sing every christmas carol like that, from now on. 😁😈 Anyway, another entertaining video - and cuddles to the Beanie Baby. 😻
My favorite quote regarding this movie is from when Raul Julia was promoting this movie, and was on the Arsenio Hall Show. Arsenio quoted from a review of the movie: “This is a Gomez with gonads.” “Raul responded: “Gonads? Is that anything like cojones?” 15:50 Yes, Gray’s Anatomy is a real medical textbook, going back to the mid 1800s. It’s been regularly updated, but from what I understand, it’s still *the* reference book for basic human anatomy. 26:15 Annoying Girl Scout is played by Mercedes McNab, whom I mostly remember from her run as Annoying Mean Girl Harmony Kendall on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
The answer is: All of the times. All of the times you have simped for Morticia. No one blames you, because we all do. Wednesday on the other hand is MVP of the sequel, Addams Family Values. Not only is she the queen of shade, she actually levels up to become the Final Boss of shade. Can't wait for Beansgiving.
Christina Ricci actually came up with the ending for the film. Today's idea of Wednesday came about because of her protrayal. Wednesday was more cheerful in the series. The Netflix show really ties the two together and shows a transition in humor. These have really been a labor of love for those involved.
The guy in the train is actually director Barry Sonnenfeld, and for the sequel (which you need to see), he actually gave himself a slightly bigger role that is simply hysterical.
I named my cat "Wednesday" because I'm such a fan! She is 15 now, might not be around for a lot longer. But she was honored in life with an amazing name!
The UA-cam channel Cinema Therapy actually say how Morticia and Gomez have a really healthy marriage, and that they are essentially a relationship goal! So you are completely correct about everyone finding themself one or the other.
This movie has two of my favorite lines: "Don't torture yourself Gomez. That's my job." "They say a man who represents himself has a fool for a client. Well with God as my witness, I am that fool!"
The neat part about the Addams family is that they're an amazing family and Gomez and Morticia are basically the best parents - they're madly (in multiple ways) in love with each other and Gomez wasn't kidding when he said he'd die or kill for Morticia, they share each other's kinks and likely invented a few whole new ones so they're clearly still romantic/passionate, they genuinely care about their kids and actively encourage their educations and pursuits/hobbies (no matter how dull parts might be, like sitting through a kids' recital), they have a pretty substantial social circle (of shall we say "interesting characters" in their own right) and are socially active, and they maintain a connection to their past/ancestry but don't let that determine their present or future.
Ashleigh, your laugh is contagious. When Wednesday and Pugsley play "Is There a God?" Your laugh got me laughing. 😂 I'm so glad you finally watched this one. It was one of my absolute favorites growing up. The sequel Addams Family Values is great too. Definitely check that one out.
Great reaction Ashleigh...this movie is one of those rare instances where a film that was based on a former popular TV series that did everything right, put lots of references from various episodes in it for fans of the show, were able to make the story coherent and entertaining enough for new people who might not have ever heard of the stories/characters, were able to do entirely new things with the characters and materials & treated the original source material with the utmost of respect (which sadly a lot of other films based on popular TV shows fail on many of those points). This movie is the example of how to do a good updated movie from a beloved TV show. Glad that you enjoyed it & please by all means check out the very entertaining sequel 'Addams Family Values' 😁✌️
I am just rewatching the show with a friend who has not seen any of it before or the movies, or the two animated movies or the Netflix show. I also own a edition of the Complete New Yorker cartoons, which along others contains every Charles Addams cartoon published in that paper.
The original script would have ended with Gordon not being the real Fester but choosing to stay with the Addamses (tying into the larger themes of found family who loves you being better than the family you're born into that doesn't). Several members of the cast strongly objected and they chose a representative to appeal to Barry Sonnenfeld to change the ending and have Gordon be the real Fester. That representative was Christina Ricci. Clearly, her appeal worked. Interestingly, Christopher Lloyd himself was pretty ambivalent to the whole situation and was fine with either ending.
Probably because they left it a little open ended. Like you can believe he’s really uncle fester or maybe not and choose to become Fester. Which fits with the original show since you weren’t really sure who’s uncle he was, and the lightning gave them an excuse for the lightbulb gag
The adams family is just goals, Morticia and Gomez are relationship goals and the entire family. They just accept people for who they are there is no shame or judgement about how you look or what your into they just embrace the strange and want you to do you and be happy.
I absolutely love the first 2 Addams movies with Julia, Huston and gang. But it would be really cool to see you give the old 60's show a try as well. John Astin (Sean's father) plays a great Gomez that is very different from the suave Gomez in the movies. I absolutely adore Anjelica Huston as Morticia but Carolyn Jones is eye-meltingly gorgeous in that role. 😍😍
@@nicolehand She and Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster were PEAK. I know it never happened, but to this day, I insist in my head-canon that both families exist in the same reality, and are long-time friends.
If you like Christopher Lloyd, (I don’t know if you’ve seen it but) I recommend ‘Clue’. It’s based on the board game. Christopher is young in it. It’s a dark and hilarious murder mystery (very much in the same vein as Addams Family). And it would be a good light hearted Wednesday watch for Hallowbeans.
Addams Family Values is hilarious. I personally think it's funnier than the 1st one because you understand the caractors more. Plus, you get Carol Kane as grandma .She takes the role over and makes it her own. If you don't recognize the name, she played Miracle Max's wife in The Princess Bride and is one of the spirits in Scrooged (with Bill Murray). Over all I love both movies and yes, Thanksgiving would be perfect to watch that one. 😅
Okay, so now it's VERY IMPORTANT that you watch the sequel, Addams Family Values, AS SOON AS IS HUMANLY POSSIBLE, first because you want to get to it before everyone talks it up to the point where it can't possibly live up to all the hype, and second because there are callbacks to the first, and third because it is definitely the Best Sequel Of All Time. Seriously though I was so excited to see this jump up on my screen tonight, you're a favorite among the reactors on my subscriptions, this is a favorite movie of mine, and this is one of those movies I just knew was pretty much guaranteed to hit you directly in your funny bone, so it was a delight to get to experience your reaction to all my favorite scenes. Thank you for doing what you do! Edit: Whoops! And I forgot I was going to suggest you watch Penelope, another Christina Ricci movie that is sweet and charming and funny and very pretty. Also has James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon, Richard E. Grant, Catherine O'Hara, Peter Dinklage, and Nick Frost.
This movie and The Brady Bunch movie surprised me in theaters with how amazing they were given the Hollywood track record of making crap based on older shows and counting on nostalgia to carry the weight. But once in a while someone just understands the source and preserves the essence while elevating it to another level.
I’m so glad you liked this, it really holds up. You’ll love Addams Family Values even more, it’s sooooooo brilliant! Great cast, great story & Angelica Huston is ICONIC as Morticia - she had separate lighting just for her eye line which you noticed straight away because the simp count was 15 (I’m sure it was higher in your head!)
@AshleighBurton Christopher Lloyd really shows what a chameleon-like actor he is. While you’ve seen him in roles like Doc Brown in Back to the Future or Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, he’s played a wide range of characters from Reverend Jim on the TAXI TV series, a mental patient in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and even a Klingon in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
"For you it was the worst day of your life. For me, it was a Tuesday." I miss Raul Julia. I know I know, different move, but it's such a Gomez quote. Astin was amazing, but Julia is Gomez. And Morticia ahhh mon cheri...
I don't know if its intentional or not, but you're coming across as really polished and full of charm lately, the editing is great and I like what you're doing with your hair. Onwards and Upwards No-longer-awkward Ashleigh!
I think the lake under the house, with Gomez belting it out as he punts the boat along, is a Phantom of the Opera reference. Fun fact: Cousin It's bubble-car is a real kind of car you used to be able to buy, I think they made 'em in the 50s or 60s.
What makes the first movie so fun for me is how they built several quick scenes into the movie from the original one-panel cartoons, like the boiling oil dunk in the opening. Anjelica Houston does a great job, but she did have Carolyn Jones as a reference. So far, Christina Ricci is the best Wednesday.
I don't see if anyone has mentioned it, but the lighting on Morticia Addams is a reference to Bela Lugosi in the 1931 "Dracula," who was similarly lit. Side note: They also lit Lucias Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies this way.
It was surprising how well they captured the same vibe of the original 1960's. When it first came out there was some doubt if it would be as darkly humorous without being silly. It had to have been difficult for the cast to play such iconic characters, but they nailed it. It was definitely not made for just kids. They didn't forget the older "kids" that grew up on the original. Back in the day the question was Addams family or the Munsters as your favorite.
i had very low expectations when this came out. But when I finally came around to watching it I couldn't stop enjoying it. I love it now, and consider it a classic.
This movie is a classic. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving for the sequel. Speaking of movies for holidays, watch The Commitments next St Patrick's Day. Thanks!
"Addams Family" is also the highest-selling pinball machine in history. All throughout the 90's you couldn't go into a bar or mall arcade and NOT see Addams Family (or Terminator 2, usually one next to the other) pinball game. Lots of lines from the movie are on that game such as "That's the spirit, Thing, lend a hand!" and "Keep the ball, I have a whole bucketful!" I can't wait for "The Crow" review. If it hadn't made it to HalloBeans this year, it could have waited until February because it's kind of a twisted love story. It is most assuredly NOT a "Rom-Com". But it's fun.
I had one. I was suddenly so popular in town. But it did help me get a female that I had wanted for ages. I sold it two years later for a lot more than I paid for it.
I still remember playing the shit out of that back in the day. There's a handful of restoration videos on YT about pinball experts fixing up old copies of that game.
Just wait until you see the sequel. Joan Cusak as Debbie gives a performance that should have been Academy Award nominated but thanks to the Academies genre bias never was. She is terrifyingly unhinged in that film but also wickedly funny.
I know everyone likes Addams Family Values better, (and I have to agree) but this is still a great fun time - I appreciated it a lot in 1991. They really got this right off the bat - the cast are fantastic, the script has all the jet black humour needed - it's just all ramped up to another level in the sequel - plus the addition of Joan Cusack, whose presence always makes a movie better. So yes Ashleigh, can't wait to see your reaction to that around Thanksgiving time - perfect.
I grew up with the original TV show (only much later read the REALLY original comics). So I was highly skeptical. But casting of Angelica Houston and Raoul Julia was brilliant. And Christina Ricci really stole the show. The other actors were adequate, not meaning any disrespect. But Julia, Ricci, and Houston really made the movie. "I would KILL for her...I would DIE for her...Either way, what bliss!" Gray's Anatomy is one of the most famous anatomy books ever written. Having it right next to Joy of Cooking, well, you get the point.
Raul Julia (Gomez) was an award-winning stage, screen, and TV actor and also a well-known humanitarian. Born March 9, 1940, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Julia died October 24, 1995, at age 54 in Manhasset, Long Island NY as the result of a stroke following 3 years of fighting stomach cancer which he did not make public and continued to work in spite of surgeries and hospitalizations. His list of projects is long and as varied from the comedy "Moon Over Parador", one of my favorite comedic mysteries "Compromising Positions" with Susan Sarandon, to the esoteric drama "Kiss of the Spiderwoman" with William Hurt.
Christopher Lloyd is a phenomenal character actor. His most iconic role probably is Doc Brown, but the one that gave him his start was Rev. Jim Ignatowski on Taxi. He’s hilarious. He also played a Klingon in Star Trek II: The Search for Spock. Full face makeup with prosthetics, but his voice gives it away.
I’ve seen this movie at least 15 times 😉and Morticia still moves me. You maybe didn’t know there are meme’s about the relationship of Morticia & Gomez. I love that you picked up on the specialness of their love 🖤. I can hardly wait for you to see the next one! TY for all the hard work you are doing for Hallobeans 🧡🖤🧡🧛🏼♀️🎃👻💀
I am so happy you loved this movie, this is an all time favorite of mine. I saw this in the theater on my 12th birthday. To tell what kind of a kid I was, during the scene at the play with all the blood everywhere I was howling in laughter. I've enjoyed it even more as an adult since yes I do in fact get all the jokes I wasn't supposed to get at 12. Everyone in this cast is amazing, though I've always loved Raul Julia in a bunch of stuff. RIP. I also love how you simped for Morticia 15 times and I can't blame you.
I love when you throw your head back and belly-laugh at the same silly bits I do. And your outro analysis is always spot-on. It's nice revisiting these movies I haven't seen in a while...
Raul Julia was a legend. His last movie was Street Fighter with JCVD. As terrible as that movie was, Julia was dying when he made it, and did it because his kids asked him iirc, and put all his heart into playing the maniacal dictator M. Bison.
And in doing so, he gave birth to one of the greatest memes of all time for people who want to, you guessed it, take over the world.
"OF COURSE!"
And he nailed it! His performance was so much fun to watch. “For me it was Tuesday,” is in my general lexicon.
I used to watch that movie over and over just to see him…
Street Fighter is so bad it's good. Raul Julia definitely contributed to that.
@@outrageouslycrazy1 I don't know if it's true, but the story is they asked Anjelica Huston, and she replied "Not without my Gomez."
@@RobertJW yes & she burned her Morticia dress
but there is the 3rd movie: Addams Family Reunion with Tim Curry as Gomez & Darryl Hannah as Morticia
For Raul........it was a Tuesday

I would have to put Nick and Nora Charles from The Thin Man movie series on par with these two
@@BAD46660 It's always nice to find someone else who likes the Thin Man movies. 😊
It’s a testament to the state of minds of the ignorant people when they are talking about the “perfect marriage” of two people in a scripted movie…. Especially a ridiculously fictional movie like this. Unreal.
Perfect name, dude.
@@aspilurchAlso helped by the fact that while in full color, because of her makeup, Morticia is effectively in Black and White.

And the episode where he became a famous singer!
Lurch also often growled respectfuly or disrespectfully, but you always could understand what he meant.
Thing also underwent a small change, as he in both the cartoons and the series was alway shown as an arm reaching through any opening or box of the Addams house.

R.i.p to Lisa, I didn't know she had passed 😢
Fun Fact: They had trouble getting funding for the movie because "who would be interested in a has-been TV show from the 1960s?, until a day when a bunch of studio executives were in a shuttle from the airport when one of the producers of this movie went "Dun-dun-dundun" *snap snap* and the entire van sang the whole theme song from start to finish.
Which is all the more reason to ignore critics.
The only critics I ever really cared for back in the day were Siskel and Ebert. Even when I disagreed with their views I at least understood them.

Something to keep in mind: it is insanely difficult to kill an Addams. Wednesday and Pugsley are functionally immortal.

In the series, In a flashback episode on how Gomez and Morticia met, it is revealed that Thing has been with the Addams family since Gomez himself was a child, suggesting Thing is the son of an earlier generation of hand-servants. Thing, overall.

12:49 “I bet this movie was so much fun to film!”
Nope: It was decided that Morticia should have eyes which slanted upwards at the sides, an effect which was achieved by attaching an elastic strap to the back of Angelica's head via fabric tabs glued at her temples, which pulled the corners of her eyes upwards.
Houston also famously burned her dresses after filming as she didn't want to wear them ever again.

It was so heartbreaking to when Raul Julia passed on and Anjelica and Christopher Lloyd respected him so much that when talks of a 3rd movie came out, out of respect for him, they declined to return to their roles.
I shall always remember Raul Julia as Aram Fingal in Overdrawn at the Memory Bank (1984).

@@onejesterno, I definitely was a weird kid.
What a great reaction Ashleigh, your laugh is so infectious. My two favourite lines are "Are they made from real girl scouts" and "I'm a homicidal maniac, they look just like everyone else". I'm now impatiently waiting for your Adams Family Values reaction.
I second The Addams Family Values. Both films have such incredibly memorable lines.
@@jaquesshugossen9398 "He has my uncles eyes."
@@vederianl9723Gomez, take them out of his mouth!
"I would like a Thing, please." GIVE THAT LADY A HAND!
👏👏👏👏👏
My favorite quote regarding this movie is from when Raul Julia was promoting this movie, and was on the Arsenio Hall Show. Arsenio quoted from a review of the movie: “This is a Gomez with gonads.” “Raul responded: “Gonads? Is that anything like cojones?”
15:50 Yes, Gray’s Anatomy is a real medical textbook, going back to the mid 1800s.
Wait. Really? I gotta find Buffy on stream now and look for her.
@@mideon84oh yeah! She’s in Buffy seasons 1-5 and Angel seasons 2 and 5.
Having seen Wednesday in her adult roles, it really seems strange seeing her in the Addams Family.
I preferred the original Morticia Addams (Carolyn Jones).
I simped for both Gomez and Mortica
Christina Ricci actually came up with the ending for the film. Today's idea of Wednesday came about because of her protrayal. Wednesday was more cheerful in the series. The Netflix show really ties the two together and shows a transition in humor. These have really been a labor of love for those involved.
No matter how long I live or how many movies I watch, NOBODY will ever be on the level of Gorgeous as Angelica as Morticia.
I have a 15 year old cat named Bellatrix! She's great!
The UA-cam channel Cinema Therapy actually say how Morticia and Gomez have a really healthy marriage, and that they are essentially a relationship goal! So you are completely correct about everyone finding themself one or the other.
Christopher Lloyd was also wonderful as Judge Doom on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit “
This movie has two of my favorite lines:
"Don't torture yourself Gomez. That's my job."
"They say a man who represents himself has a fool for a client.
Yeah, it cracked me up when she talked about this movie being "the original".
Halley's comet only comes around once every i don't kwon im not rocket scientist 😂😂😂❤
Carolyn Jones was devastatingly beautiful. Like a renaissance painting or a Greek sculpture. She didn’t even seem real! 🥰
Yes, I've been rewatching the original TV show recently. Such a great cast.
@@nicolehand She and Yvonne De Carlo as Lily Munster were PEAK.
I know it never happened, but to this day, I insist in my head-canon that both families exist in the same reality, and are long-time friends.
I love that show. I watch it all the time.
If you don't recognize the name, she played Miracle Max's wife in The Princess Bride and is one of the spirits in Scrooged
(with Bill Murray).
Over all I love both movies and yes, Thanksgiving would be perfect to watch that one. 😅
This movie stayed on repeat in my vcr growing up as a kid.
Love this movie. Love Hallobeans. ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES next, please! xo
Very excited to see you eventually do Addams Family Values too. Hope it's soon! Hope you enjoy!
This movie and The Brady Bunch movie surprised me in theaters with how amazing they were given the Hollywood track record of making crap based on older shows and counting on nostalgia to carry the weight. But once in a while someone just understands the source and preserves the essence while elevating it to another level.
Which is the real key to reviving old properties. You need someone who both understands and loves the material.
Anjelica Huston was so scrumptious.
This is an annual Halloween watch for me. And yes Angelica is absolutely gorgeous in it.
4:37 was my favourite “application of a movie line into a licensed product” - they use that line on the pinball table when you start an extra ball
Fun fact, the actress who plays the Cookie Scout returns as Amanda in the sequel, Addams Family Values.
i had very low expectations when this came out.
Lots of lines from the movie are on that game such as "That's the spirit, Thing, lend a hand!" and "Keep the ball, I have a whole bucketful!"
I can't wait for "The Crow" review.
I grew up with pinball, and "Addams Family" was/is my favorite machine of all time.
Don't..i...deserve...love? And jewelry? (Gotta say it like Joan did)
9:56 I use to abuse the hell out of this quote 😂
Wednesday ahs all the best lines:
"Are they made from real Girl Scouts?"
"We're going to play Does God Exist?"
"I would KILL for her...I would DIE for her...Either way, what bliss!"
Gray's Anatomy is one of the most famous anatomy books ever written.
Another awesome reaction, Ashleigh! Thanks for watching The Addams Family! Love you!
Couple goals!! This and Family Values are my favorites movies to watch!
"UNCLE. MURDER." 🤣🤣🤣
