The only thing I dont like about this movie is that it misses the point of the original story. The Whos always had the real spirit of Christmas at heart and celebrated despite having all their gifts stolen. This is what teaches the Grinch the true meaning of the holiday. In this movie, the Whos already lost their way and drove the Grinch away, who already loved the holiday before running away. It took Cindy Lou to try and convince the Whos to stop being so gloomy and her father finally grew a spine and stood up for her. AND THAT was what caused the chain reaction for the rest of the town to join in the song. And that moment SHOULD have been the Grinch finally discovering the true meaning of xmas. But the problem is that he already knew it when he was young. He just needed to remember. It was the Whos who needed to change, and finally accept the Grinch for who he is, despite his appearance and behavior. The Grinch in this movie never had to change. He just needed to remember what it was like being a kid again.

When Ashleigh said, "Nobody deserves to be alone, just because they're a little different." I almost cried, because I am alone, and don't deserve it either. What a way to make the Grinch NOT the antagonist with one statement.
Wait, we haven’t done any Jim Carrey Movies yet?!?! Pet Detective, The Mask, Bruce Almighty, Series of Unfortunate Events, Yes Man, Liar Liar…. He has a great catalog, we need to a few of these reactions please.
And Bruce Almighty. But seriously, there's literally NO movies of his on Ashleigh's channel? Can anyone who might have checked, confirm or debunk this?
Grinch was a grouch because he was teased and bullied as a child, everyone laughed at him for being different (In the book he was black & white instead of green) so he became a hermit who avoided everyone by living in a mountain cave with his only friend Max. He didn't hate Christmas, he hated never being invited to any Christmas dinners or ever getting a gift so he decided that everyone should know what it's like to feel sad like him.
Asheligh, watching the adults put their keys all into a fishbowl: "at least they party resposnsibly!" 😅 Oh, you sweet summer child 😂 you're too young to know what "key parties" were...and all the adults watching this when it came out were SHOCKED that would be in a children's movie. There's a ton of adult jokes that just flew over kids' heads in this, and that's the biggest. 🤣
So if it was a key party, did everyone sleep with each other at that house? Otherwise, why didn't anyone realize the Grinch was out there until morning?
Anthony Hopkins is the narrator!! also they sneakily used 6 different shelter dogs to play max and probably save a boat load of money on a hollywood dog
This movie is the definition of an instant classic. I remember when this came out. It was played on tv during the holidays as soon as it was able to be on network television. So good!
12:45 - Oh Ashleigh, my sweet summer child... While there is a pretty decent chance the keys could be for no drunk driving, it could also be a "Key Party" which is a type of swinger party where people draw keys to find out who they go home with. This might also allude to why the baby looks so much like his boss.
I worked as a Studio Guide while this was being filmed... Jim Carrey would (on occasion) run out and wave hello (as The Grinch) to Tour Guests. It was such a fun time to be a Guide... Ron Howard says he made this for his Mama (who loved Christmas) and after whom he modeled the Molly Shannon character... Martha May Who (Christine Baranski) has become a HUGE Icon for Holiday Costume Parties! So glad you enjoyed it all!

My favorite bit in this movie is when the Grinch yanks the tablecloth out and everything stays perfect. Then he walks back over and knocks it all down. The script said that he was supposed to messily pull the tablecloth out and send everything flying. Carrey yanked it out so forcefully that he accidentally did the trick where nothing falls over. He stayed in character and walked back over and knocked everything down as an improv and they used it.

20:50 That was actually an accident Jim was supposed to throw everything on the floor. But he did it perfectly then ran back and knowcked everything over and they kept it in the movie. Which tbf is easily the best scene showing how petty Grinch can be.

You should hear Taylor Momsen's singing nowadays. That little girl has grown and is now lead singer of the rock band The Pretty Reckless! Oh, and you may remember Jeffrey Tambor as Edgar from Muppets from Space. If not, then you do now. Edit: Rest in peace, Rance Howard (the director's father) Verne Troyer (one of the band members), and Josh Ryan Evans (Kid Grinch). This was sadly the latter's last film role before he died in August '02. 2nd edit: The Grinch's "loathe emtirely" could be referring to the mayor, since he DID bully him when they were kids. 3rd edit: Next December, you oughta watch It's a Wonderful Life if you haven't already. 4th edit: By the way, Ron Howard is not just a director. He also acts. He's best known in the sitcom world for his role as Richie Cunningham from Happy Days.
There's a very popular theory that his speech about all the Christmas presents he finds in the dump is also an explanation for how he got Max. Just a little Christmas puppy that someone didn't bother taking back and just up and dumped.
I saw an interview with Ron Howard, the director, who talked about this film and how it affected Jim Carey. The costume was so claustrophobic and the contacts so painful that he would literally have panic attacks during filming. Amazing to see how he compartmentalized it so well to pull out this performance.
When they put they keys in the bowl they weren’t being responsible it was a reference to 70’s key parties where couples would wife swap at the end of the party the husbands would choose a key out of the bowl and go home with the wife when lived at that house. When you asked if this was the first time seeing Jim Carrey on the channel I thought no it can't be, I thought you had reacted to the Truman show a s the Ace Ventura movies or Mask which you really need to react to all of those. Jim almost quit because he couldn't handle the thought of being in that make up everyday but they got a guy who worked for the FBI who was an expert on torture who taught Jim ways to handle being in that make up everyday. It took 8 hours a day to get him into his make up and costume. The actor who plays the Mayor's assistant is Ron Howard's brother. Jim makes fun of Ron Howard when he wears the ball cap and tries to direct Max.
Jim Carrey did the tablecloth trick completely by accident. The dishes were meant to crash but he managed to get the tablecloth out without disturbing them. Also, Jim "borrowed" Ron Howard's hat to improvise the scene where he is directing Max as Rudolph. Ron thought it was hilarious and kept it in the final cut.
Cindy: now where did the grinch come from Ashley starts singing cotton eyed Joe Why is this me with my adhd hahah literally said something similar but it was how I said the word “a lot” it reminded me of peanut from Jeff Dunham and I did a whole freaking show to my cat remembering the peanut joke 😂😂😂😂
A portion of the Whoville set was a part of the Universal Studio Tour for yrs. It got real toasty and crumbly sitting out in the sun. They finally had the chance to take it down when the lockdown happened.
What i find really interesting is when you think about how he got his dog, Max. The Grinch only gets things that where sent to him in the garbage, so that means one of the who's had to throw away the dog when he was young and the Grinch seeing something abandoned ( like himself) he took in, which also goes towards his hatred of the who's and christmas, because the dog was most likely a christmas present.
You should be looking for Clint Howard in every Ron Howard movie. Ron cast his brother in almost every one of his movies. It's like his own Stan Lee cameos.
Wild thing was, Carey was wearing a full body prosthesis, meaning he was in that suit for hours, during initial filming he had somewhat of a breakdown so they had specialists, professionally trained SEALS to help with his state of mind and ability to control his breathing while filming.
When the Grinch did the tablecloth trick, it wasn't supposed to happen "correctly". Jim actually did it and not to ruin the take, he went and knocked everything over lol
My Dad used to eat onions like an apple. He also did it with tomatoes. He would sprinkle a little salt on them after the first bite and munch away. I miss him and seeing him doing that.
Jim Carrey wore full eye contacts that were taken out between every take of filming because of how painful the lenses were. He described them as pouring Tabasco sauce in your eyes every time you put them in
Seeing you watch this was very healing for me. Thank you for being here ♥ I'm going through a divorce with a recently diagnosed narcissist, all my friends and family are either too busy, live too far away, no contact, or straight up ghosted me. 21:00, Fun fact, that didn't happen the way it was supposed to. He went back to knock it off the table, then the table. It was supposed to all fall when he did it.😮
Bruh, I'm subscribing right now. I needed a reactor who can laugh as hard as I do at Jim's genius bs. 😂 so refreshing, because most people get weirded out. Thank you for this!
20:50 Fun fact, when the Grinch pulled the tablecloth, everything was supposed to fall off, but Jim Carrey accidentally did it perfectly so nothing fell, so he improved going back and pushing everything down. The director felt the scene worked so well that it was kept in the movie.
Thank you for the love! I've been having some difficult times this Christmas season and haven't been in a very jolly mood. But, watching The Grinch with you is making my heart grow three sizes ❤❤❤!
Heres a fun theory about the phone book, When the Grinch goes through the names "alphabetically," he says "Loathe Entirely" to one specific name. And the mayor's name just happens to be Augustus May Who. 😏
You'll notice that while Cindy is interviewing Martha, Martha has jewels in her hair from the angel Grinch made her. She kept them. I can't exactly fault her for not speaking out against his bullying.. they're kids and it can be complicated. Especially when you're "popular" and you're afraid of being disliked and your feelings go against everyone else's... Kids are mean and speaking out is scary too. The teacher, on the other hand, should have known better. Despite that, you could see how angry Martha was when they laughed at him and how devastated she was when he ran. She was completely genuine.
The scene where the Grinch yanks out the tablecloth everything was supposed to go flying. Since it didn't happen that way, Jim improvised by knocking over the table. 😂
This’ll be my first Christmas without my dad, who passed in March. We watched this movie every year and would laugh all the way through! I love your laugh! It made me happy to hear the same happiness from you that used to come from my dad! Thx for reminding me that Christmas can still be a fun time, even when it seems hard! ❤️❤️❤️
It took two hours to put on Jim Carrey's makeup, and an hour to take it off. He hated it. I love this movie. I watch it every year while I wrap Christmas presents. It's a blast! Ron Howard (Richie Cunningham) directed this, and the directing "Rudolph scene" was a friendly dig at Ron, who is known for wearing a baseball cap. He wears it all the time, I've even seen him wearing one at award shows, it's like his trademark. He came into the bookstore where I worked once, and he was wearing it then.💚❤
Jim found the makeup so horrible that he called in a CIA agent to ask him for torture resistance training. After that, he could cope with the makeup to the point that he stated that "you could hit me with a baseball bat and it wouldn't faze me".

When I was in college, during my spring break, I went and visited my sister and brother-in-law in LA. My brother-in-law worked at a division of Universal, so I got a personal backlot tour and one of the sets I got to see was of some of the houses of Whoville.
27:00 I cannot tell you how much I love that editing Ashley could easily have cut this, and potentially many other things out of the reactions that we get. But the realism that we get to see from you (whether it be amazingly emotional moments like the one from Big Fish, or just the quirky little things that make you who you are) by and far makes you my favorite UA-cam reactor. 😊
The scene where he pulls the table cloth had him pull the cloth so that all the stuff would fall. Jim Carry accidentally did a perfect pull and the bit of him then coming back and knocking it all off himself was unscripted. it was so funny and in character they kept it.
Hey Ashleigh! Love your content, keep it up! All of the makeup on the Grinch and the Whos were practical effects(no CGI), that includes the contacts. And yes, they were extremely painful
Jim Carrey has gone on record as saying "the Grinch never hated Christmas. He hated people, which is fair."

@@S0urmf420 you know, just for reply, I'm gonna type the exact same thing somewhere else now, you'll never stop me from being me. I was born a staunch individualist and I shall die one.
We love Christine Baranski in this house!! She is insanely hot, funny and can sing like an angel ... She is in The BirdCage, Mamma Mia, she played Cybill Shepherd's best friend on the show Cybill...(GenX and older millennials might know it
@@Alex-gr8lv I wanna worship her feet so badly man
9:49 Ashleigh: "She's not a prodigy."
Taylor Momsen (Cindy Lou Who) grew up to be the talented and beautiful rock singer of The Pretty Reckless.
I know that now! She definitely is doing great now!
When Ashleigh said, "Nobody deserves to be alone, just because they're a little different." I almost cried, because I am alone, and don't deserve it either. What a way to make the Grinch NOT the antagonist with one statement.
12:46 😂😂Responsible partying wasn’t what they were doing with the keys in the bowl.
NOPE!!!
Google "key party" :P
I was coming to say “Ashleigh, bless your heart”
Pfffttt came here to say this 😂
That's a discussion for another day lol.
Wait, we haven’t done any Jim Carrey Movies yet?!?! Pet Detective, The Mask, Bruce Almighty, Series of Unfortunate Events, Yes Man, Liar Liar…. He has a great catalog, we need to a few of these reactions please.
Also, Earth Girls are Easy.
Also also "The Truman show"
Dumb and Dumber
And Bruce Almighty. But seriously, there's literally NO movies of his on Ashleigh's channel? Can anyone who might have checked, confirm or debunk this?
The Mask is *definitely* in Ashleigh's wheelhouse.
Asheligh, watching the adults put their keys all into a fishbowl: "at least they party resposnsibly!"
😅 Oh, you sweet summer child 😂 you're too young to know what "key parties" were...and all the adults watching this when it came out were SHOCKED that would be in a children's movie. There's a ton of adult jokes that just flew over kids' heads in this, and that's the biggest. 🤣
People still have key parties
@@AllanTidgwell Imagine being so miserable you can't be happy with your spouse so you have to resort to perversion. White folks need Jesus.
So if it was a key party, did everyone sleep with each other at that house? Otherwise, why didn't anyone realize the Grinch was out there until morning?
Taylor Momsen played Cindy Lou Who. Since 2009, she has been the lead singer for the hard rock band The Pretty Reckless.
This is the comment I was looking for. Such a talented young woman. Love listening to Pretty Reckless 🤘😎
Anthony Hopkins is the narrator!! also they sneakily used 6 different shelter dogs to play max and probably save a boat load of money on a hollywood dog
8:18 Christine Baranski is so classy looking. Definitely a beaut.
She’s also has my favorite part of this movie.
“The muscles!” 😂
Love her in _Chicago._ 😊😊😊
The fact that HANNIBAL LECTOR is the narrator, just makes this movie all the more enjoyable 😂😂
*smashes into fridge*
"SLUNK"
Jim Carrey did not have to go as hard as he did for this movie, but he did and we love him for it!
Ashleigh: At least they party responsibly."
Me: "Oh my sweet summer child. Don't none of y'all tell her!"
The tablecloth coming off perfectly was actually a blooper, Jim Carrey then walked back over and knocked all the dishes onto the floor
It actually WAS scripted. I just watched a video where someone did the legwork on verifying. The channel was Gibsonbobibson.
This was originally written in a Looper article with no citation. After trying to get in contact with multiple people who would know, he ended up on a script repository site where a script from before filming ever started reads:
"Crosses to table and pulls tablecloth, disturbing nothing. Beat, kicks table over."
The Whos: We were having our annual holiday get-together
Ashleigh: At least they party responsibly.
Me: ... Rofl🤣
12:46 that jokes for the adults, it wasn't about safe partying it was about the after party giggity Giggigy
Giggity giggity goo!

OMG, her seeing the Key Party and thinking they are partying responsibly is actually kinda adorable 😁
Literally did a triple take reading the title. How have you not seen this?! So many great quotes and memes from this film.
Yeah I doubt she’s never seen this
@ChrisCollins068 you'd be surprised what movies some people haven't seen.
Especially given her age, she was like 1 when this came out
This will be my first time watching it too. Jim Carrey isn't a guarantee of success. Dr Seuss books are rarely well adapted. It's an easy skip.
@@ChrisCollins068 Thanks for the input, Grinch.
@ChrisCollins068.. Shes not much older than the movie is. Not everybody is as old as you, or as US 😂
19:01 definitely take a few minutes to watch interviews after this where he talks about how much he hated the costume 😂 worth it and adds to the appreciation of the character
Love your shirt and earrings!
Ashleigh: At least they party responsibly.
Who's going to tell her?
Everybody, apparently.
On another reaction I saw one person bring up what it meant but here it seems like almost every comment is about the keys 😂
36:33 "I need her entire wardrobe." Agreed, and apparently a lot of people are with us as recreations of several of her outfits are available from multiple sellers lol And people have videos from making their own.
22:28 Tonsils can actually grow back if some tissue is left behind atter their removal.
Sis! We need a short of you looking up what a key party is if you haven't already. I need THAT reaction 😂
She made a short.
"Martha May can get it." Me too, Ashleigh. Me too.
Even as a kid I found this Grinch very relatable as I was also bullied as a kid.
20:50 That was actually an accident Jim was supposed to throw everything on the floor. But he did it perfectly then ran back and knowcked everything over and they kept it in the movie. Which tbf is easily the best scene showing how petty Grinch can be.

4:17 fun fact, the Grinch actually bites through raw onions if you bring it to him around Grinchmas at Universal Studios Orlando and Hollywood
Yeah. I've eaten raw onions like apples too
It's common among certain groups
I took a bite out of a raw onion like an apple once. It was not a pleasant experience.
She's never heard of The Pretty Reckless. She's a radio DJ for a living yet somehow knows nothing about rock n' roll.
She's never heard of The Pretty Reckless. Woman's a radio DJ for a living yet somehow knows nothing about popular music.
@kevinramsey417 Well, she oughta hear one song just to hear Momsen's voice nowadays.
Well in her defense, she's not still a DJ ,she's said this several times. And she was a DJ on a country station. @kevinramsey417
Just because she might not realize she's heard something, doesnt mean she hasnt.
There's a very popular theory that his speech about all the Christmas presents he finds in the dump is also an explanation for how he got Max.
Just a little Christmas puppy that someone didn't bother taking back and just up and dumped.
Was about to say the same thing
The way I heard the theory was that the mayor was the one who dumped Max.
That is a very heartbreaking & infuriating theory. Not because of the theory itself but because that somebody would actually do that...
@@Weststribe That would make sense....
My headcanon is Max was a little puppy investigating wrapping paper and such Christmas waste and was scooped up with it then accidentally dumped.
I'd really like to see a Jim Carrey "character duet". Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask and The Grinch singing a duet of "It Isn't Easy Being Green".
"At least they party responsibly." Oh sweet child, that's not what's happening. 🤣🤣🤣 Look up something called a 'key party.'
She assumed they were car keys.
They are.
And we all fell in love with Christine Baranski.
oh yea, a beautiful sexy woman.
Already had during Cybill.
Fun fact the girl that plays Cindy Lou Who is now the lead singer for the band Pretty Wreckless!! She's amazing
27:07 My new screensaver and my new ringtone - Thanks Ashleigh, I'll cherish them - What a great Christmas present!
The actress playing Cindy-Lou Who is Taylor Momson. She later retired from acting and is now the lead singer of the rock band The Pretty Reckless.
Cindy: now where did the grinch come from
Ashley starts singing cotton eyed Joe
Why is this me with my adhd hahah literally said something similar but it was how I said the word “a lot” it reminded me of peanut from Jeff Dunham and I did a whole freaking show to my cat remembering the peanut joke 😂😂😂😂
The Grinch is LOADED with adult humor. The keys in the punch bowl is a swingers joke
You should be looking for Clint Howard in every Ron Howard movie. Ron cast his brother in almost every one of his movies. It's like his own Stan Lee cameos.
Lol at Ashleigh missing what the key party actually is.
I just told her that.
I eat raw onions and tomatoes too!
Jim Carrey wore full eye contacts that were taken out between every take of filming because of how painful the lenses were. He described them as pouring Tabasco sauce in your eyes every time you put them in
"At least they party responsibly" awe, that's cute.
Seeing you watch this was very healing for me. Thank you for being here ♥
I'm going through a divorce with a recently diagnosed narcissist, all my friends and family are either too busy, live too far away, no contact, or straight up ghosted me. I slept through Thanksgiving and Christmas this year feels so awful. I'm packing and cleaning the apartment we shared and looking for a new job and a new place to live by next month.
My Mom gave me a DVD of this when I was young- years after it came out (I was 2 in 2000). Apparently Mom and her sister went together to see it in theaters.
I loved it then, and I still love it now. :)
*i always thought they were partying responsibly as well* - these comments ruined me!! i didn't know!! 😆😭
Heres a fun theory about the phone book,
When the Grinch goes through the names "alphabetically," he says "Loathe Entirely" to one specific name.
And the mayor's name just happens to be Augustus May Who. 😏
Whos throwing their keys into a bowl at a party.
Ashleigh - At least they're partying responsibly.
Me - Oh you sweet summer child.
🤣🤣
The tablecloth trick was actually a blooper ,he did perfectly by accident but they left it in because of his reaction 😂
27:06 Hubbin is about to have a great Christmas now 😂
When I was in high school, a neighbor of mine had regular "key parties" - I overheard my sister telling my mother what was going on.
@@mevbI think the studio called in the CIA guy for him. Apparently he would chant “it’s for the kids, it’s for the kids” to get through it.
Hi Ashleigh, glad you enjoyed this film. I hope you & your family have a very Merry Xmas & an even Happier New Year !! Season`s Greetings to all your other Subscribers & commentators !!
Ash, Them putting. those keys in that vase is a key party. Is when they switch spouses
WAIT. WHAT
@awkwardashleigh yep
Glad someone told her 😂
So glad you enjoyed this! It was such a good time to watch with you. This movie came out when I was nine and I didn’t see it for years because I was so attached to the cartoon version from the 60s but now this is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time. And I highly appreciate your appreciation for Martha May! She is an icon among icons! 💜
In case no one mentioned it yet, Jim Carrey sang the entire Grinch song. He's incredibly talented!!!!!!
The scene where he pulls the table cloth had him pull the cloth so that all the stuff would fall. Jim Carry accidentally did a perfect pull and the bit of him then coming back and knocking it all off himself was unscripted. it was so funny and in character they kept it.
12:42 who’s gonna tell Ashley that it’s a swinger’s party? Who’s gonna explain that it’s a who-swinger’s party?
I absolutely lost it when you got excited and started doing the grich growling bit at the camera 19:15 Lmfao
Hey Ashleigh! Love your content, keep it up! All of the makeup on the Grinch and the Whos were practical effects(no CGI), that includes the contacts. And yes, they were extremely painful
23:35 favorite part of the movie. He spits it out and says “WHAT IS IT?!”
