First Step of Michael Jordan

  • Michael Jordan possessed an unmatchable first step than enabled him to elude defenders so easily for those acrobatic drives and open jumpers. It was even said that the refs were giving him preferential treatment by allowing him to take an additional step. However, video break down established his first step was so quick that he was not in violation of the rulebook.
    Kobe Bryant doesn't have this first step and thus has difficulty shaking his defender. This is why you see Kobe having to take a lot of contested jumpers and is a big reason why Kobe doesn't shoot the same percentages as Jordan. The other reason being that Jordan used his teammates and the offensive system (movement without the ball) to get himself open shots. Twice in his career Jordan made nearly 54% of his shots for the season. Kobe has never shot over 47%. Not once.
    Jordan, past his athletic prime, won a poll for the quickest first step. The poll consisted of one representative from each of the league's then 29 teams.

    For all the guys complaining I just wonder if they'll be able to match such speed in a pro-b-ball game. To this very day I still see no evidence of their being another Michael Jordan. I personally think there is no passing of the torch.

      Ryan i know this is a very late reply. Most people complaining about jordan first step as a travel not only doesn't know the basic footwork for a quick first step. MJ is the most skillful player to ever play basketball. he so advance for his era not only the most athletic. Most quick first Mj is doing is done with a "Split catch" if referee is aware of his skill. It wont be called a travel bec its not. On a "split catch" for a quick first step there is no pivot foot established. Good day to you.

    I am unaware and pretty doubtful of that existing :) Would be fun to see or hear anything about it, though.

    He makes a ery small step on the non-pivot foot before lifting his pivot foot, and simultaneously he dropd the ball for the first dribble, and it happens so fast.

    MJ got called for traveling a lot when he was a freshman in college, so Dean Smith sent videos of MJ's quick first step to the ACC commissioner (or whatever entity is responsible for officiating) to prove that he wasn't traveling.

    Travelling all day. He even showed himself in those teaching videos, that you can't pick up your pivot foot, before putting the ball on the floor(he even said "that's a travel in any league") and we see him doing it a hundred times in this video.

    The actual start of a dribble is when a player can lift his pivot foot when dribbling.. Note when dribbling. The pivot can be raised but must be released in the form of a pass or shot before reaching the ground. Im this case, the rule isnt so clear as to when a dribble officially starts. Technically, the dribble starts when one hand is over the ball about to drop it for the first dribble... The ball needs not hit the ground for the pivot foot to be released. If jordan did travel in any of these, it would be if he palmed the ball with one hand when 'letting go of the ball' for his first dribble to secure it and have more control. Then again, go ahead and prove / disprove he did this live action if he did.

    • @saveriovescio5174
      @saveriovescio5174 8 років тому

      +nikkal101 the rule is pretty clear: you can't lift your pivot foot if you don't release the ball from your hands first. So most of these move are travels.

    • @m74d3
      @m74d3 8 років тому

      +saverio vescio The reason it isn't called is because it happens so fast, and in the fluidity of the movement, it looks like the ball is leaving his hand at the same time he moves his pivot foot. It would be extremely lame if the nba called something like this a travel. They never do

    • @m74d3
      @m74d3 8 років тому

      +saverio vescio It's basically a tie. It would be one thing if there was like a full second between when the ball left his hand and when he lifted the pivot foot. But it looks like a tie to me. If the pivot foot is moving before the ball is released, it's only by a matter of milliseconds. I'm watching it in slow motion and I can't even tell his pivot foot is moving before the ball is released. It's too close to be called a travel.

      +Michael L bottom line... this all proves what an amazing athlete he was. Kenny Smith said it best. He coupled both his athletic abilities with great fundamentals the best... which makes him the MOST unguardable player ever.

    If the ref doesn't call it it's not a travel - if he moves his pivot foot to beat his man and there is no call, so what? Point is, it's just another way to get him an open look, and why not since it's not called by the refs?

      no, all that plays are travelling
      In starting a dribble after (1) receiving the ball while standing still, or (2) coming to a legal stop, the ball must be out of the player’s hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor. -nba official rulebook

    @1:11 - Pure Travel. Left is the Pivot.. He moves the right into position. Life the pivot before he even dribbles the ball. I like Mike and all but that Nigga stay Travel. Refs don't call it because they are given the orders to Let this man work. He was the face of the NBA.... People pay to see him destroy.

  • @GhettoEyeWitnessGBT

    I love MJ but my dude clearly travels all the time. How can you conventionally play a person whose go to move is a clear cut violation of the rules. After you pick up the ball or the ball has been passed to you, the second step you take is established as your pivot foot. If you move that pivot foot, it is considered a travel. It is also considered a travel if you throw the ball up in the air and catch it again. So, basically it is a travel if you take more than two steps. 2bcont...

  • @kisswriters
    @kisswriters 12 років тому

    He traveled all the damn time. Don't believe me, pause at 2:53 ... ball still in his right hand but left pivot foot is clearly lifted off the ground. He did this all the freaking time. Even worse when going to his left.

    Now check this shit out..Recently (for the 2009-2010 season), the NBA has allowed the player to take two steps before establishing a pivot foot. Before this rule change, you were only allowed to take one step. Huh? So what MJ's been doing for years before the '09 &'10 season was TRAVELING? Not the G.O.A.T? smhlol

      this is 80s defense. And of course the defense looks trash. These are highlights. Offensive highlights. Defense looks trash in any era on highlight videos because they are....offensive highlight videos of a defender getting scored on or beaten off the dribble. Use your head. Go watch Kobe highlights and same thing, D looks trash. Any player. Curry? Go watch highlights of him slow motion jog it through the lane and casually lay it up with little to no resistance at an all time high efficiency in the paint for a player who's completely average athletically. That looks like trash Defense.

    • @MTNtf2
      @MTNtf2 8 років тому

      +MTNtf2 score*. Anyways you cant see a defense like this no matter how much you get deep in the highlights. This defense is without zone defense , unathletic players trying to guard athletic players one on one. The defensive schemes are so advanced that you can pretty much shut down a player completely. Example : Mavs zone against Lebron.

    Are you really sure of what you are saying? Seems to me like you're more in denial of what you're seeing in this video, because of some sentimental connections you have to Michael Jordan. LeBron James travels even more. And the refs even let him do it way more frequently. You connecting me emotionally to LeBron James is even worse than dozens of morons over here trying to scream Jordan was immune to traveling. He's laughing at the league right now with how much he got away with.
