What is Merengue Music?

Some time ago, I created a short video about Venezuelan Merengue. Reactions were mixed. Most people loved listening to the music, but some were quite upset about it. They insisted that merengue is a Dominican genre and this music was not Merengue. This is my conversation with Prof. Marysol Quevedo from the University of Miami about the origins and disambiguation of the term Merengue.

The jumbled international terminologies also extend to "contradanza" itself: a loan from the English "country dance."

Base from what I understood about merengue is somewhat similar to what happened to cumbia. Although I heard cumbia is from Colombia, it has different variants that are similar yet distinct in places like Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, etc. The only difference is that while these cumbia variants are still alive, most of the merengue variants died out or assimilated into Dominican merengue that is well known.
