There’s an interview on UA-cam with Mu Carvalho, one of the songwriters of this song. And he reveald, much to everyone else’s surprise, that he and his writing partner actually wrote this song by the melody first, trading lines. One would write a melody line, the other would the write the next. Only at the very end they added the harmony. As they were writing the tune, they were chating about the importante of the melody, that had become somewhat overlooked by Brazilian songwriters after the Bossa Nova movement shifted the focus to complex jazz inspired harmonies. Yet, the harmony is always the most comented aspect of this song. Your passion for discovering music from all over the World is truly inspiring. Keep up the good work!
Oh maaan. I used to listen to this with my dad... This song low-key marked an entire generation - and their kids. We always viewed it as a parent growing old and still trying to be a part of their kids lives, to still mean something to them. We were the kids back then, but we're growing older now... We're finally understanding it. We're becoming parents ourselves. Thanks for reaching out to it. This was amazing.
Man, I can definitely relate to this comment. Being a parent now, I definitely think about a lot of things differently. It's different to be on the other side.
Yes this song was composed in 1976 and still is a major success to these days. Composers Mu Carvalho, Cláudio Nucci and Paulinho Tapajós are all great musicians and took part on other very influential songs in Brazil. Mu is one of the founders of A Cor do Som band, Nucci was one of the original formation of Boca Livre group.
I always wanted to hear an analysis of this song from a "not Brazilian" professional!! It always bugged our minds here in Brazil in Harmony classes. It is really a very well composed song and it was a huge hit it the 80's!! But even more beautiful, is the harmony of the voices!! All these chords are sung by the band members, and also, they have a "a capella" version, which is awesome. Congratulations David, you really nailed it!!
The thing is: many musics we use to listen in soap operas and as we grow up we kinda lose interest because… well sounds like old. However such analysis warm up our memories and unlock the inner secrets on such melodies
Bravo, Maestro! 👏👏👏 Sapato Velho It's a masterpiece! I loved that you related Roupa Nova to Chicago… I usually say that they are the Brazilian Toto, but Chicago is a great reference. Thank you for the incredible content, the class and your respect for Brazilian music. Obrigado! Best regards! 🤩
It's a pretty famous song here in Brazil. I remember when I was learning to play guitar, how difficult it was to understand Sapato Velho - tempo, chords, melody. Even been a song I knew since I was a kid, everything was so strange. Btw, one of the composers of this song (and I assume that it's his harmony) is the keyboardist Mú Carvalho. He did a lot of work in Brazilian music, but I recommend the band "A Cor do Som", especially the live album in Montreux. Great video, David! Thank you.
Many people compares Roupa Nova with Toto because they are session musicians and since the 70s they recorded a lot of mainstream albuns of brazilian artists
Congratulations David! You've explained beautifully! This is a song I grew up with and played on my acoustic guitar when I was a kid even before I had classical lessons. It all makes sense. I think the musicians that composed it, did it by instinct, by not thinking much about the construction. And your Brazilian Portuguese is awesome!
I loved you singing in portuguese! This is an awesome song and every brazilian likes it, me included. what I like the most is whenever they increase the tension in "Hoje não colho mais as flores de maio, [then increases] nem sou mais veloz [then you think you're good, but no, increases again] Como os heróis [then resolves and goes back to theme] É, talvez eu seja simplesmente ..." It's a very tricky song, either to play or to sing. Awesome video!
David, I was very happy with your comments! I'm Brazilian and like millions of other Brazilians here, a fan of the group Roupa Nova. This song is one of my favorites and I have followed it throughout my life, it was the only one that I insisted on being on my wedding playlist exactly 30 years ago. Thank you very much for your remembrance and tribute to this song. Stay well always! Big hug !
I discovered Roupa Nova early in the eighties, when I was a young guitar player trying… to play their songs. The harmony richness, the melodic strength and unexpected chord progressions made me a fan. Thanks for sharing that.
Love Roupa Nova. Your portuguese is very nice. Interesting that the song is called Sapato Velho (old shoes) but the band name translates to New Clothes 😂
and the band is named after "Roupa Nova", by Milton Nascimento and Fernando Brant, which they recorded in their debut, homonimous album from 1981. "Sapato Velho" is the first track, "Roupa Nova" is the last one
What a great video David! I had the privilege to play with Thiago Feghali son of Ricardo Feghali one of the Roupa Nova members, they all came to see our show once, all wonderful talented musicians, anyways, this song it's just wonderful in all aspects, and your harmonic analysis was wonderful, and even your Portuguese sounds great man! All the way thumbs up! Thank you so much for subbing my channel what an honour have you there, I really appreciate your support! I love your videos and of course every time it's a Brazilian song I'm there cheering! Loved the one about "Construção" by Chico Buarque! "Sapato Velho" was written by another wonderful musician Mu Carvalho, he had a group back in the 80's called "A cor o Som" with Armando Macedo (Osmar Macedo his dad invented the Guitarra Baiana), Ary, Luciano and Dadi.
Thanks for doing this! The comparison with Chicago is spot on considering melody+harmonies but the Toto comparison has also lots of merits: both bands are formed by renowned session players that morphed into their own bands with tremendous musicianship. Not to mention timeless hits (Africa x whisky a go go) and phenomenal “give me chills” ballads (i won’t hold you back / I’ll be over you x A viagem / Linda Demais / Bem simples / começo meio e fim). Still lots to explore as you go about Roupa Nova! Keep it up! 🎉
Kiko, the Roupa Nova guitarrist, actually shared this song's vocals from each member of the band here in youtube. None of them sing at the same tune at the same time, and that created the powerful effect of an actual choir we hear in this song. Roupa Nova has many wonderful songs, but Sapato Velho is one of my absolute favorites.
Man... I'm Brazilian your Portuguese is very good, congratulations about your job order here, I love acoustic music and I got as a suggestion your channel.
In Brazil, we write this chord as A/G. As a rule here, we just can invert a chord putting on the bass a note that comes from the chord formation with its seventh.
Hey David, you have no idea how much I loved this! Roupa Nova’s music defined my generation, and I couldn’t agree more that Sapato Velho is the one song for you to feature. And you did it so wonderfully! Thank you for the brilliant insights!
In my teens, as a music student, I was in a vocal group and Sapato Velho was one of our hits. David, I follow you on instagram and this is the video that brought me to your yt channel. Congrats, you make such a great work, guy
I learned to play this song on guitar (nylon) and it's a real challenge: almost every sylable from the lyrics require a chord change. It's like a passage rictual for the intermediate player.
The reason people use to compare roupa nova with toto is because The roupa nova guys did a lot of studio recording sessions as hired musicians, they also wrote songs to other artists.
Thank you so much for this video, it’s so heart warming! It’s my favourite song from Roupa Nova, it’s so special! I grew up with this, I went to a concert of this band in 2012 and it was so so beautiful.
This song is one of those that we love to sing with friends, each one singing one of the voices from the vocal arrangement. Two things: Firstly, I wish you sang the whole song. Now I have that bitter taste left by a dominant chord that was not resolved. Secondly, have you heard all the vocals? The arrangement is gorgeous! Thank you for looking into our music so kindly. You always bring up the beauty and share the great value from different cultures.
Thank you! The vocals are awesome that the band uses. It took me a long time to practice one verse. I'm not sure I can learn the whole thing right now. 😂
I was about 11 when my dad bought a Roupa Nova cassette that had this song. It takes me right back. We used to listen to it in the car on road trips. It’s hard to sing to, but it’s brilliant.
I´m brazilian and this song reminds me of when I was a child. We used to sing it in a school choir. The lyrics are very poetic and the melody is beatiful! Thank you for analysing this song!
I really loved this analysis! I just came back to my childhood! And for me it is very very interesting, once I never observed the complexity of this song!
It's interesting how the F#m7 sounds in a way sort of a jazzy chord because of the presence of the 7th however it becomes II-7 of E later on. The F°7 functions really as the VII°7 of a minor scale.
@@DavidAsherBrown You may want to check out Chico Buarque (lyrics) and Sivuca’s (music) “João e Maria” - it’s melodic and harmonic richness and brilliant lyrics also takes one back to vanished childhood fantasy.
Probably the best Roupa Nova song. Reminds me when I was 15/16 and young people like to get together with friends and the guitar was the center of attention.
Around 7:00, you play a melody (4 bars?) over chords in 3/4 that’s very suggestive of a passage in “Rainbow Connection” by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher. The song is from The Muppet Movie, the lyrics in the passage “someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection…” Interestingly close.
You just sang the last "cowboy" differently🙃🤪 (sorry for nitpicking) but, regardless, it's amazing to watch you analyze a song that is so dear to us Brazilians and reaffirm what we already know...we've got pretty amazing musicians here too. 🥰
They also sing a song with a similar concept called Maria, Maria. But Roupa Nova is much more and deserve further research! We also compare them to Toto because they were the session band to various Brazilians artists, such as Gal Costa. Great video and thanks for your efforts with the Portuguese, your pronunciation is spot on! Looking forward to the next ones!
