I didn’t realize James Taylor was dealing with that issue as late as 1975, I read somewhere it had ended very early in his recording career. Then again, I went through it and quit in 2009, and it doesn’t just go away, it takes years to find any semblance of stability. More power to him to have remained on the right side of sobriety. Thank you for sharing this song.

his addictions and addictive personality is what makes james a great song writer. hell most great artists are fighting some sort demon one way or the other drugs is a double edge sword it can unlock great creativity that leads to great art and it can also destroy

They don’t seem to write such great songs anymore. One of JT’s very best. Wonderful harmonies. Great bass and beautiful Art Garfunkel backing vocal. There is a unbelievable live version on JT ‘s live at the Beacon. Thanks Lee you are amazing.

Thanks for doing this one, Lee. One of my deep-cut favorites from JT. It is easy to hear the pain that he was going through at the time. I've always been so impressed by your sensibility and instincts about where to go on the fretboard. Beautiful work by you and the whole group.

As many times as I DID play this on radio, WATCHING you play this was an absolute joy, sir! Listening, I could still see the Warner Bros. label spinning on the turntable, the audio board in front of me, and the sun shining through the control room window. Love that album! (I probably played WOMAN'S GOTTA HAVE IT more than JUNKIE'S LAMENT, but I sho' 'nuff played 'em both!)

Again you hit those low double stops that many bass players avoid and you and Frankenstein pull it off beautifully. And the rest of the bass line is just so musical. Thanks for taking the time to play again, but don’t feel you have to-you’re a great DJ, too.
    Stay safe and stay well!

The 70's WERE a most remarkable time for the community of great musicians....and music lovers like me. Enjoy this channel so much. Nice bass line on Frankenstein there, Mr. Sklar. James Taylor's voice takes me back to that time faster than anyone else...except maybe Crosby, Still, Nash and Young. TY, Sir. Happy you'll be back with your bandmates soon!

Such an incredible honest song by JT trying to deal with addiction at the time. Lee's bass, for me, makes the song feel like the stuck in late afternoon traffic in a city - a guy getting edgy before he could get his next fix. Lee adds SO much to these songs...

Lee, thank you so much for inviting us into your living room and being able to see you play a while song instead of an occasional glimpse. The cadences flow like water. I met you in Turner's booth at NAMM in 2017 and you were approachable and kind in answering my question about the creative process.

I can't listen to In The Pocket and not remember my college years. This album was new when I was three years old, but I got obsessed with James Taylor sometime around 1990. Whenever I listen to his albums from the 70s, I remember my young years in the 90s. It's really inspiring to hear and watch you play along with this classic. I love Gorilla, too. Actually, I love them all, but especially the 70s stuff. Flag is probably my favorite, even though it's probably not one of his most critically acclaimed. I love the way James reworked "Up On The Roof".

Leland, I really find it cool how much you love that bass. I am a drummer (and also play a little guitar), and I have a few cymbals and a snare that I feel that way about. Your history with that bass is more than mine with my gear, but I really understand that physical, visceral connection to instruments. I hope you keep playing it on your videos, and I always smile when you talk about it!!

I was in hospital years ago and full of morphine. I'd been listening to this album and I was in pain so I called the nurse and accidentally asked for methadone! She went ballistic and called the Doctor who raced to my room and again I repeated my request. Pandemonium broke out, records retrieved and questions asked. Eventually the Doctor said 'Do you mean morphine?' 'Yes!' I said, 'that's what I've been asking for!' They weren't amused but I was too mellow to care ;-)

In 1997 James Taylor in a 3 minute live interview with Jools Holland on UK TV after watching some VT of an early performance of Country Road, featuring Carole King and Lee Sklar was asked by Jools,
"... and the Bass player, who was he? He had the biggest beard that I have ever seen."
James responded, "You know, I asked his wife what he looked like without that beard and she said, she had never seen him without a beard and it turns-out, his mother has never seen him without a beard - That's Lee Sklar."

I want to say I'm so glad I found your channel.. I must admit that I didn't know that much about you but you have such a recognizable presence that I just see you around with different bands and wondered to myself.. who is that dude with the beard that plays with so many different folks and thanks to the vast and unpaid interwebs, I came across Leland Sklar. Just started my journey with you recently and just finished your video for In The Air.. and LOVED hearing your bassline. I first learned about James Taylor when I was a young teen.. I may have been 10 or 11 even.. and talked my dad into letting me join Columbia record thing.. (could have been someone else but for some reason, that sticks in my head) where you get 13 albums for a penny and then they send you one every month... can I say that a 10 or 11 year old does not need to be having one of these because I always forgot to make my selection, so I was stuck with what they sent me and, of course, they make it a pain in the ass to send it back.. but the upside was that I was introduced to some really great music and one of the albums that I received was Mudslide Slim and the Blue Horizon. I learned that album from front to back and back to front.. fast forward a few years.. when at the age of 26, I was blessed with twin daughters.. who suffered from colic, as babies do.. this was what I sang to them in the middle of the night in my rocking chair.. the entire album.. so much so that they now know the album forwards and backwards too.. they are turning 36 this year.. my daughter has You can close your eyes lyrics tattooed on her body. I look forward to hearing the rest of this story. Take care.. and thanks for your content!!! BTW.. their favorite part on Mudslide was "Koocharoo?? " they used to get the BIGGEST kick out of those parts that seemed ad libbed.

Leland. Here's a thing. I have recently got a box set of JT's Warner Bros Albums and "in the Pocket" is one of them.
There is a picture with the album of all the people on the record (you are reclining at the front.) James is on the far left, but, also back right as you look at it, right where Carly Simon is, holding a small child.
Not only is JT a great artist, but also can in two places at once. Ha. Ha! Thank you once again.

You have the tastiest bass lines in the world, Leland. What a musical voice you have. Thank you, for being the “great melodic artiste” that you are. Love you, brother!🙌🏻🙌🏻🍎

Hi, Lee. I donated a few shekels to Arnold McCuller's GoFundMe for David Lasley. David was such a wonderful background singer to all those JT songs (and for others).

Interesting comment and beautiful playing that is so uniquely Lee Sklar. I always bought a JT album for the entire album - never just for the hits. It always felt like you got to know artists more with songs like Junkies Lament than the big hits. Not only because the lyrics were more intimate but it also seemed the music stretched out further.

“horn organ” might be a Hammond B-3 organ through a Leslie rotating speaker. Or, better yet, one of those little plastic toys you blow into with a little keyboard. Probably the latter 😆

Sweet song. Sad nostalgia hearing Carly on backing vocal.
Horn Organ sounds like an instrument that could have been invented by Prof. Peter Schickele for his P.D.Q. Bach character!
