We did that in 95 from HAAF in Savannah, GA and disembarked on the runway in Charleston, SC for Gen. Shalikashvilli. We came out as the C-17 came to a stop, we flew down the ramp and when we cleared the aircraft we traversed the turret and did a few maneuvers on the runway.
Timothy Neyers C-5 also consumes a lot more fuel,is slower and need larger runway. Rather than loading 2 tanks on one C-5 ,2 C-17's carrying ome tank each would be far more economical and safe....
the C-17 IS MY GIRL. I was one of the PARTS CHASERS AT THE LONG BEACH ,CA plant where she was built. THE CARGO area was my duty area. I was on the program till close to the last bird delivered. THE C-17 can only carry ONE tank but SHE can go where THE C-5 CAN'T EVEN DREAM OF GOING DUE TO NO SPECIAL RUNWAY,hence the NEED FOR A SMALLER BETTER BIRD.!! She only needs 6 football fields to land and its own wingspan to do a U turn in and she goes back the way she came in.
Agree. Worked at the Flight Operations Dispatch Test and Production in Long Beach from 1897 to 2002. Dispatched several of these since the begining of the Program. For Production flights the Ramp would book the aircraft and we would brief the pilots on weather, notams, writeups and corodinate with ATC and flight follow. Normally there would be 3 flights before the Air Force came and did their thing and delivery. Of course flight test was a whole different story.
I so love the comments of that new Airbus transport being better than the C-17. The Airbus is basically a C-17 with turboprops. No way in hell could one of those things carry freight like this. God bless Boeing.
Paul Johnson Canada was looking at the A400M, but it over 2 years behind schedule and the payload was reduced. Plus the Ukrainians were charging an arm and leg for the Anotovs to transport the tanks and the SART teams all over the world. Canada bought 5 C-17s(CC-177 in Canadian service) but really needs 10 at least. This weekend the CC-117s are loading up for Nepal with the DART and relieve supplies.
Paul Johnson The A400M is not basically a C-17 with turboprops. It's much closer to the C-130, fulfilling the very same role. To compare it to the C-17, simply because it has the same tail, is fallacious. The A400M sits in between the C130 and the C-17 as far as its stats go. The C-17 is 1/4 bigger than the A400M.
Paul Johnson htka.hu/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/A400M_17.jpg They have reminiscent tails. That's it as far as features that aren't "default" for cargo planes go, and is much closer to the C-130.
Just set the record straight. C-17 was designed and built by McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC). It only became Boeing because of the merger which was in the final stages of C-17 production in Long Beach CA. Was a FAA Flight Dispatcher during the Program.

A-10: the flying tank
C-17: flying a tank
That would be the C-130 gunship.
If I'm not blind, it's M1A2.
You have to remember those G-forces when flying curves etc. Suddenly 50 tons maybe become 200 tons. Really amazing!
That plane is OP
C-5MSuper Galaxy can carry 2
mi Abrams and the troops are able to sit upstairs in comfortable seats
Too bad the C-5 can't do tactical with its size. Good luck getting her up in the air after you land!

Wow, what a splending, splending quality! Awesome!
That's just amazing how these things fly!
Very good! I like very much tanks Abrams!

The might of AMERICAN military 🇺🇸
C17: Doo dee doo dee doo doo...

How long does it take to strap a M1 tank down? 🎃🎃
I don't think only one tank can fit in....three it might.
+Garutay San Agustin It can load only 76 tons. This corresponds to ca. one Abrahams Tank and few tons of additional load.
+Loi Angelo You can fit 2 unloaded and armed Abraham's in a C-17
+WkroT yes, you're right.
He flies a tank

That there is an M1a2

Sarge Rho To me, the shape is exactly the same. Like a carbon copy.

So only one tank can fit in the C-17???
+The Angry General There's enough room for more than one M1A2 Abrams (reaching 70 tons), however they cannot carry more than one in weight.
cool story bro, an antonov 125 loaded a TRAIN
There is no such thing as an antonov 125. You might be talking about the 124 or the 225 though.
nice tank. i feel like to have it.
just kidding 😆
С-17 может поднять танк-это хорошо.А вот Ан-225 на внешнем креплении поднимет С-17 вместе с этим Абрамсом.
+Alex Black Loading it must take 2 years.
Only one tank fits inside? This is quite ineffective. OK but better when they are shot down on landing.....
there isn't enought payload for a second Abrahams
70 tons is pretty decent
