Read my mind. Since this video came out I have probably listened to this at least 1000 times. I have it in a playlist of around 300 videos and (not complaining) every day I shuffle that playlist I hear this song at least once while I am at work. It never gets old and I love it.

I've never been a fan of this song, and apparently it's because it was in the wrong genre.
The original version is definitely a rock song that was brought up in an Amish community and could use the instruments it truly required to be good.

I wont say this is metal, this feels like a 80/90s power ballad, and your voices are perfect for it, the anguish of the lyrics being driven with the resolve in your voices. This song was meant to be sung like this.
The type of songs we need more of today I grew up in this era
I was expecting it to go hard like Halestorm or The Pretty Reckless from what she was describing. This is an 80's power ballad which isnt bad just not what I was expecting.

I totally agree with Malinda that this song begs to go hard, and I love this version, but it left me hungry for MOAR. So I searched "I see fire metal cover", discovered Jonathan Young's absolutely spot on perfect cover, and dove in deep on his discography. That journey alone was a big win, but not far into Young's videos I came full circle to a metal version of several Phantom of the Opera songs... with Melinda singing! Hellz yes, this has been a good morning! Thanks, Malinda!

I didn't get the kick I was expecting, or the metal flavour I thought I was getting. Like someone else said, it felt more like a rock ballad. More similar to the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence than anything from evamescence or nightwish.

I know a lot of people are saying they wanted it to go even harder and be more hard rock / metal vs a rock ballad style, but I don't know if I agree. This sticks truer to the original than a proper metal cover would have.
EDIT: 2 weeks after my original comment and I'm obsessed with Violet's covers. Absolutely incredible. I was introduced to MALINDA's music through the Hoist the Colors clip that went viral, and now I've been introduced to Violet's music from this. Sometimes UA-cam is a great thing.
UA-cam is, a mixed pile at most times. But there are hidden gems, that when uncovered, truly makes up for the piles upon piles of utter brain mush. Gems such as this one.
I also completely agree with your initial comment, i dont think it could have gone any harder while being true to the original. Although i must say, she did slightly oversell it in the intro and title.
Also just discovered Violet, she adds that bid of darkness/romance that I miss in most music

This version would not have suited thst movie at all...so saying that there was an oomph we always wanted, makes zero sense. Without the original, this would not exist.
