I want to make a note regarding the bathroom as a place to hide things.
I have a family member who has gone to rehab multiple times. They have stolen money, guns, prescription medicine, and anything with any value over $50 from the family.
If you have a person like that in your family, the bathroom is a BAD place to hide anything. Pills are often kept in the bathroom, and the bathroom has a level of privacy to it that allows somebody to turn the room upside down under the excuse of "I shouldn't have had taco bell last night".
Avoid the bathroom as a storage location. Especially if you live in a family or neighborhood with addicts. It is often the first, if not only room searched by such people.
    I speak from experience.

I tell people on the net, but when it goes down you'll never find me. Store preps in several locations. The people might think they've hit jackpot and leave not knowing you have some sort of time capsule buried in the back yard. Precious metals are even easier than people think to hide, and no, I won't tell you the huge vase in the living room to keep them in. Just for a good example. You can also get something like a dummy book and put it in with a pile of books. Amazing how things in plain view are overlooked.

I live in the desert, so water would be the most critical resource in an emergency situation and storing enough is a space issue when you don't have a basement. I bought a bed for my guestroom that has a high under-bed clearance with a very thin box spring to make up the difference. I can store over a hundred gallons of water there. That also frees up space in my kitchen for food storage.

Little off topic but wanted to make parallel point. For those of us who can legally carry a pistol, I highly encourage you to carry one around your house. It seems strange at first but as a former LEO who’s responded to many home invasion calls, I can attest that the 12 gauge in the upstairs closet does you little good when your napping on your downstairs couch when the front door is kicked in. I carry a little pocket pistol when I’m around the house. Smaller than my formal EDC but a lot more comfortable and it’s on me when I need it.

My house was robbed once, and I didn't even know it until three weeks later. The cops told me, most robberies are like that, they rummage through stuff looking for wads of cash, atm, ect, then they put everything back into place after they find what they want, so you don't even know you were robbed. But the cop gave me some great advice, he said to take a current, valid credit card, or atm, then call your card company, or bank and tell them you lost your wallet. Bank will deactivate card, yet that card will still have a valid date on it so thief thinks the card is good. Take that card, or cards and leave them out where a thief would find it immediately, they'll grab it, be happy and be on their way. The cops also said, a lot of times, when they can't find anything valuable, they get pissed and trash the house, start flipping things, so this is also a good way to give them motive to take your bogus cards and get out quickly without being pissed off.

Many preppers have been told to build a network. So, you talk to your "neighbors" and you get one of two responses. "Oh we don't have to do that, the government will take care of everyone. And it's illegal to "hoard". Or you get this response "Well, now we know where to go and get what we need from your place. And if you resist, we'll call the authorities about a hoarder." So, what good are your preps? How well can you hide them from the authorities? I gave up on "neighbors" a long time ago. But in a cul-de-sac of 10 homes, it will be a mess defending our property, regardless of how well we may have hidden it. I wish the "network" people had been shut up a LONG time ago. Prep in quiet privacy, and tell your neighbors "Oh, the government will take care of us." Then quietly and securely go about your hidden preps. I enjoy your channel.

I like the false prize approach. For example, I’ll leave a hundred bucks in mostly small bills out on the kitchen counter (but out of site of a window of course) and leave inexpensive jewelry out on the dresser etc. When burglars break in, you want them to get the mental satisfaction of a quick easy win so they don’t keep looking and ransacking your home as much. They get the cash and jewelry you “left out” and their mind starts to move on to escaping before it’s too late.
It’s just an idea, and certainly not always going to work. But if I were a burglar and didn’t find anything at all, I’d probably get frustrated and break lots of stuff looking.

I made a business making stashes and reinforcing houses against criminals. Unfortunately criminals took over a place and the police couldn't get in. Then they passed a new law here in Quebec next time they come across my work, or similar security, they are allowed to use small explosives. I made chain link doors so people cannot kick them in so the police tried shooting the links. True story. I use old electric fuse box panels to hide stuff behind. If you have chain link fence, pop the metal cap off the post and you'll have that entire hollow post to hide money, ammo, knives etc. Pick one that's in the shade of course. NO one's going to run around your yard in plain sight popping off the post caps looking for stuff. Also, yard decorations like bird baths with a hollow pedestal, bird houses (great for security cameras too!), And fake flower boxes. If you have chickens, make a fake nest box with a box underneath the hay. Ain't nobody looking there!

I had two bushes removed from my sidewalk up to my house and on a dark corner that also blocked the window. I don’t put things near my windows doors patios or my yard, that anyone can hide behind. Yes I am trying to mimic the Fort Knox “wide open spaces” idea. I also started doing this when I became a mom and reviewed my security again, when I became a single female mother with 2 kids. I had a crazy BF that would enter my apt (yrs ago) so I would lay brooms in weird spots that no one would think a broom should be (trip them up 😆). The officers had me put tape on the window seals where it couldn’t be easily noticed and baby powder on the floors. I set traps so I will know if someone has been here or is still here.
I installed exterior door locks on the doors inside as another layer to buy precious seconds.
I like to go outside, when it’s super dark, and look in and around my house, to see what others can see, from the road, the height of my curtains or open spots (like when the curtains are wrinkled and don’t cover fully). I like to see my weak spots so I can address them.

Drop the ceiling in your bedroom (or any room) with 2x6s lumber on their edge, then use screws to fasten 1" tongue and groove material across the the 2x6s. Depending on how you attach the lumber, (I recommend a rim joist screwed to wall studs, and joists attached with joist hangers) you can store hundreds of canned or freeze dried items in this space and access it when the time comes simple by removing a few screws. Not only is it good storage but it helps insulate your home and if the grid goes in winter time, this dead ceiling space will be the last area in your home to drop below freezing, preventing frozen canned goods.
I had a friend who did this and had she never shared her secret I would have never noticed the alteration.
Good, dry ammo/ gun storage as well.
Btw, if you have a second story home or a basement you can simple screw the tongue and groove material across existing joists.

Jewelry can be stored inside a freezer container then stored inside the freezer just like a container of beans. If it’s something that won’t be hurt by water, such as gold or gemstones, you can actually add water to the container and really freeze the container. Watches can be stored inside rice or dry beans. I used to do a class called Kitchen Table Economics, in which I advised people to freeze their credit cards this way, inside a container of ice. They would have to wait until the container thawed out before they could use the card. Back then you actually had to swipe the card when you charged things! Ah, those were the days!

Here is a true little experience we had with our "Alexa": my nephew was visiting and we had thrown a whole bunch of trivia questions at Alexa just to see what answers we'd be getting. After a while, we were just having conversations among us when my nephew mentioned that Alexa's light ring was still circulating. Jokingly I asked her, "Alexa, are you spying on us?" Lo and behold she answered, "That is not a very nice question! Of course, I would not do that!" I believe the looks on our faces were priceless and needless to say that Alexa was immediately unplugged, boxed up, and removed from our home!

A few years after just when his wife was bugging him to get ride of it they had a burglary and they took the safe. When my house was robbed, years ago, they pulled off couch cushions, shoved the mattress half off the base, swiped everything on the closet top shelf to the floor, emptied the dresser drawers, generally made a huge mess looking for valuables. They even left the dishwasher door open.
I had recently bought a beautiful new jewelry box. It looked kinda like a cigar humidor. It sat on my dresser, it held my "real" pieces. Next to it was my old jewelry box, pretty glass front panels, full of costume jewelry. The stupid robbers took most of the costume stuff from the old box, but never touched the new one. I was so grateful. Some of the valuable pieces were irreplaceable.
It gets better. On one side of our bed we had a traditional nightstand. The drawers were pulled out, lying on the floor. On my side was a round table with a floor length cloth draped over it. They didn't touch the table - or the gun underneath.
So we had jewelry and a handgun in the most obvious places. They tore up the house, and missed it all.
      Best to you and yours.

If you have some land, or know a patch of public forest, i use 4" and 6" diameter ABS pipe, with glue on Cleanout caps.
use a ice auger or a post hole shovel to bury these in places you mark on a map, and/or use your GPS to mark points where you stashed these. If you have something that can corrode, fill the ABS pipe with mineral oil - i did this to stash a knock-down 22. it will never corrode.
Don't put thinks together that don't need to be, i stored the ammo in a separate area from the 22. If someone finds one tube, that doesn't actually help them likely.
i have other ones filled with Salt, sugar, rice etc - i put these in vac sealed bags first, then put the bags into the tubes.
With a good length of auger, and an extension, i have some tubes up to 6 feet long, which is half a length of ABS pipe.
I hide a few of these along a fence line, using the real fence posts to "hide" the ABS pipe below, i use these ones for winter accessible - i will know exactly where to dig. and burning the post will assist in accessing the tube. Some piles of flat stones on top of other ABS capped tubes is an easy way to have winter access.
Just my technique since i have a lot of land.

If you are building a cabin as a bug out location, and you have some privacy during construction, rent a small excavator (presumably for levelling the foundation) and dig a big enough hole for a 500 gallon septic/water tank under the foundation. It is big enough to stand up in and will store a lot of supplies in a dry environment. It could also double as an emergency hide. Put a hidden trap door in the cabin floor for access.
A lot of homes have recessed pot lights that easily remove for maintenance. Simply put supplies above the ceiling gyprock/plasterboard, using the hole for the pot light as access.

If you have 'gross' and/or wet pets you could hide stuff in their tanks. I had rats as a kid, my friend had a snake, and we all had goldfish. You could buy a cool looking little plastic/wooden box to keep your most precious jewelry in, which would be safe to put in your pet snake/spider/cockroach/scorpion/frog tank, and it would just look like a tank ornament (I doubt someone would put their hand in a tarantula lair to take a look at the small toy trunk, or risk a piranha bite to nab the weirdly-real-looking gold doubloons on the bottom of the tank), or you could hide stuff under the wood shavings.
I wouldn't recommend putting anything inside a rodent cage, but you could put the cage itself on top of a floor safe or lose floorboard.

A fake duct running there would also be a great place to hide things even further.

As a construction worker, I see more and more people getting accent walls covered in vertical strips of wood.
They usually always go for a "rustic" look, so the level of finish isn't great, so you can easily conceal an entire section that could open, and just put a couch or large chair in front of the skirting seam. Only issue you get is people better not be spatially aware and realize the room is smaller than it should be. So only viable in intricate indoor sections of the house where it's naturally hard to have an idea of how large the room you're in should really be ... then be sure to use that accent wall thing on more than just the 1 wall in your house ... make it a repeated theme as to not arise suspicion.

    • @resourcefulgirl
      @resourcefulgirl 6 років тому +2

True. I am currently picking out house plans that naturally work for something like that. It's the only way, outside of burying something. I've put a lot of thought into concealing a small room. No one will know. Not even my builder :)

    • @P5ykoOHD
      @P5ykoOHD 6 років тому +3

Yeah, and a room like that doesn't even need to actually be very large, you only need a little space to conceal stuff (like guns, gold, silver or whatever you're trying to hide).
Not to mention, you can caulk the seams to make it look like it was never open to begin with, caulk seals are easy to break, and if you're accurate enough, you can even run a scalpel blade or cutter blade along the side that touches the wood and have it already "ready to open" without having to take a blade to it when you wish to open it. ^^

When my house was robbed while I was visiting my newborn daughter they broke the back door window and reached in to unlatch the door. Since I had to go back to the hospital and didn't have time to repair it I made a quick trap (the detective investigating the robbery laughed and said it was ok when he saw it). I took an extension cord and removed one end and put the bare wires on either side of the latch and plugged it in. It wouldn't kill the theif but the shock would cause him to quickly pull his hand back. The jagged glass would shred his arm and he'd leave a blood trail. I was actually disappointed when he didn't return. (I knew it was the kids across the street but didn't pursue it.) The reason the detective said it was ok was because the house was locked and it would be considered illegal entry it he stuck his hand in there.

If you have a bugout property simply bury the stuff off site of the main building. Even then, scatter old nuts and bolts around that area to throw off metal detectors. Once you know a method works, consider planting a tree or bush directly on top of it. It will take some effort getting to, but it wont be stolen. In rural areas, consider burying one of those half sized shipping containers. You could do a full sized, but for just storage, that seems a but much. I would also just highly recommend getting a large Liberty safe and bolting it to the foundation. Unless they have a few hours AND industrial power tools, they aren't getting into that safe. To further protect yourself, encase the sides and top of the safe with cinder blocks reinforced with rebar and filled with concrete. This way, if they DO manage to have some power tools, they have to go through the thickest part of the safe, the front.

As most of us have (hopefully) never stolen anything or broken into any houses, it is very difficult to truly understand the mindset of an individual who does that, and we often underestimate their intellect, ingenuity, and planning. Listening to a man who single-handedly broke into hundreds of houses in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas for over 20 years before finally being caught, is a truly sobering experience. When my nan died we found about 5k lying around in the house in cassette cases and rolled up socks. Pretty sure the charity shop probably got a few hundred quid in accidental donations but we were just gutted she never bought the boiler she said she said she couldn't afford. Anyway the moral of the story is if you are hiding valuable stuff leave a list somewhere

We had a neighbor whose wife died and a few years later his children convinced him to sell his house and move closer to them. As they were going through all the stuff in the house, they found several hundred dollars that his wife had hidden and hadn't told him about. I think they found around a $1000. So it is a good idea to let someone you trust know you have hidden money somewhere in the house.

Half walls (4-6" deep). Face it nice and pretty, keep the backside open, put a shelf on top. Shove it against the wall, and shove you couch or other furniture in front of it. Just remember which walls are bombarded by the sun all day.
Build your own dressers. Put a 6" deep compartment in the back, maybe make it a side drawer.
For that matter. Your interior walls aren't insulated. Next time you consider renovating, think about how you could make use of that space. Granted, drywall is a fire retardant, so keep that in mind too (my trailer is all paneling, so I lose no fire containment if I fuck around with the walls).
Properly installer flooring is a luxury. I am a flooring installer, and I am going to tell you right now, your flooring is destined for the landfill once it is installed; there is ZERO resale value to it. Having said that, there are plenty of floor coverings that can hide your plywood without being properly secured; kanga hide carpet, carpet tiles, cushion lino, etc, be clear with the retailer you don't want it secured to the floor. If you're lucky enough, your basement ceiling is tiled, not drywalled; mark out where your plumbing and electrical is, and then determine where your traffic zones are (very important, do not forget this); any part of the floor left over can be used for hidden compartments.

I used to be a dealer, so I have a million hiding spots. There are companies that will come and install hiding places of all sizes. Even cops/DEA that are trained to search will miss them. I have a couple of large, quality gun safes (I have a lot of guns) that bolt to the floor and they're huge and heavy. I carry and keep guns close at hand in my house so, if they go for the cases of ammo in my walk in closet, they'll be shot (if they're still alive when they eventually gain entry (if a door can be opened, it an be breached, and I can shim a padlock in seconds). My powerful (legally RXd) opioids, benzos (the good prescriptions) are hidden so well I'd have to actually tell you where they are. My house is hard to find (in rural, wooded, mountainous area), and marauders would be seen coming up the dirt road well before they got to the house and made a bunch of noise getting in (I know how to barricade) and negotiating the path and the anti personnel and vehicle traps they'd have to get past.

I have seen too many movies to think that under the sink or behind the toilet are great hiding places.
When we were a young married couple (~35 years ago), we use to hide condoms behind all the paintings in the house. Then one day someone wanted to see one of them up close and took it off the hook... and then a condom fell on the floor! She was more embarrassed than me.
I like the idea of the false pipes and such, but not the outlet as some people mentioned - they are sold everywhere. TFS, Nicole

Don't leave tools laying about outside. Don't depend on powered systems for alerts, such as cameras and alarms, unless you have a truly independent power and data management setup...most of the rest of us will have to make do with crunchy gravel, rattling fences, nightingale floors. Maintained gardens and grounds scare off robbers as they suggest a greater likelyhood of being observed by a caretaker. Please don't use dogs solely for guarding, also pet treats get around most dogs easily, especially if they are poisoned; so be careful to train a guard dog to not accept treats from strangers.
Epiphany...If thieves broke into your house, and only got the decoys, well...they know how to get into your house, and can readily presume there is better stuff remaining.

For "up and under" hiding of cash, neodymium magnets and double-sided, self-adhesive pads are the way to go.
I have a steel tobacco tin in the kitchen that is stuck on magnets that are attached under wall cupboards using the pads. I can grab in a second but it's almost impossible to spot if you don't know where it is.
Great for grabbing cash if you need to leave quickly or even to just have instant cash to pay for a pizza or taxi.

The absolute best place to hide stuff from criminals is a place that is not easily gotten into. Likewise it is not easily accessible to you either. Going along the lines of false walls, but not false walls. Use your real existing walls. Cut a piece of the drywall out and hide whatever it is in the wall cavity. Then replace the the drywall. Tape and mud it over. Then repaint.
There is no way any thief is going to find that hiding spot. Ever.

The people who previously lived in our apartment installed a drywall triangle so they can mount their tv facing the room corner with the couch in it.
Behind that is just dead space! I even asked the owner of the house if there were pipes or cables or anything running through but he said its just wasted space and I could take the wall out or not, he wouldn´t mind. For a place to hide stuff, this is about a square meter of dreams coming true! I have yet to figure out how I would do it (and get permission from my roommate XD)
but this is definitely a prime feature of my home! (Also the low rent the best landlord EVER!)

Without expanding I rely on traps. I have them at key points around the perimeter of my house and inside.
I also keep bats, knives, blackjacks, etc. dispersely hidden so at any opportunity I can grab a weapon and mount a surprise attack.
Remember, anything used craftly is a weapon.
Last but not the least: gadgets; hidden & visible cameras, fake mix with reality, alarm systems, etc. And common sense; do not talk about your PREP details to anyone.

My diggenest dog gave me a wonderful idea when someone started stalking me and listening/murmuring outside my north window in the wee hours of the night after I blew the whistle on a higher-up at work who was raping young foreign Christian Ethiopians who had to work for 3 years with the company in order to get citizenship. I dug a deep hole in the ground under the window - just like that old dog had all over my backyard. Then I collected dog shit (owned 4 large dogs) over about 4 days and filled the hole which was almost 2 feet deep but only about a foot across. I lightly covered it with dirt and grass. A few days later, very tired and stressed out by the targeting of the sick, mean creeps, I called an electrician to put a sensor light outside of the window. He came with his apprentice and I took them around the side of the house where the window was, all the while questioning him on how sensitive the light was, etc., completely forgetting about.....Well, when the electrician, not his apprentice, suddenly sank, mid sentence, knee deep in the shit, then started sputtering in wonder, then horror and finally disgust, the incongruity of it hit and I started laughing so hard I cried. I couldn't stop, all the while trying to explain what had happened, between the uncontrollable peals of laughter which had infected his apprentice who succumbed to the pure hilarity and doubled over. Finally even my unintended victim belly laughed, despite the rank smell and gross muck he found himself in. Ive come to understand God has a helluva sense of humor! I kept refreshing the hole after the sensor light was installed as I'd learned those guys were more than capable of dismantling lights when I'd go for groceries or whatever. Eventually I had to sell and move. Life in the Canadian West in 2003.
