$3900 plus tax so say $4000. 18g of coffee @ $15.75/310g per bag is $0.91 per double shot of espresso ground coffee. Average cost of double shot of espresso at a cafe, about $3.50. So we can solve for the payback with the following expression: (4000+0.91x)/x = 3.50 => x = 1544. That's a cost equivalency of 1544 cups of espresso. So, assume that you consume average of one espresso per day, the payback time is 1544/365 or 4 years and 84 days. Consuming 2 espressos per day would cut that in half at 2 years and 42 days. Since the waiting time for an espresso is exactly the same as the labor of the coffee shop, we'll call that a draw! As gorgeous as this machine is, you gotta really love making your own espresso (not to mention have a lot of cash) to justify buying this beauty.
$4000 divided by 365 days is about $11/day. I buy at least 2-4 cups a day. I’m married. My wife and I each drink 1-2 cups/day. We live in California (Bay Area) so decent cup costs about on average $8. $8 X 2 Cups/Day = about $6,000/year. Worth it if you live in California and you’re married with kids lol. IM BUYING!

They can 100% make a cheaper machine but they don't want to. If they wanted to, they would have done it a long time ago. They didn't make this to be more affordable. They made it for people with limited space but with a high budget
I am a bit skeptical about apps on products I intend to use for years to come. Can every essential function be used without the app? -> backflush for cleaning
I feel this. My cameras don’t function well sometimes due to unmanaged and outdated apps. That being said I don’t know off the top of my head if that’s the date here. I’ll try to find out (we will have the micra at my coffee training center where I work, tomorrow)
Pretty disappointed that preinfusion not capable unless it’s plumbed. I would expect the vast majority of people who buy a small home machine do not have ability to plumb line pressure. My current consumer machine (Breville) that costs 1/2 this one does preinfusion from a reservoir.
It does have the option to do a pre-brewing infusion. It's done via the pump, so no real preinfusion, but basically it's doing the same thing: making the coffee wet before the brewing starts.
Please help, I use a Flair 58 and love it but really want to upgrade. We only do two drinks a day but love the smaller footprint and brand of this Micra. I'm finding it hard to introduce air without it going crazy. Any tips on how you did it would be greatly appreciated!
Nice video as always Emilee, first I'm hearing of this new machine from LM! The portafilter is a nice idea but they should have made it from metal. I'm not sure most people paying this kind of money want plastic construction. I know the Linea already has a plastic drip tray but at least that isn't touching super hot coffee that you're going to drink.
Yes, I agree. It is not healthy at all, but Covid-19 didn't touch a hot water either that caused more harm globally than just a little espresso machine does. ;-)
Very nice. I have the Mini, which is brilliant. When we host the family for holidays, I like having the power to crank out the drinks, but every other day of the year, the Micra would do the job.
It may need a minute or so to get back up to temp. It's indicating the heatup by the blinking red light, but it's real quick. I don't even know why people mention this. You won't even notice it in real life, because you can't make like 10 shots in a row without pause. You need to serve the cups, talk to someone, get new cups, steam milk, refill beans etc. In these breaks the machine will easily reheat.
@@EmileeBryant good, I feared it for a moment! :) thanks for a great review. When I’m going to upgrade from my sage dual boiler one day, this will be a candidate!
Would you say the extra spend for one of these would be worthwhile over another machine like an ECM or Profitec in terms of maintenance costs, or do they all have about the same maintenance cost over time? For some reason I see the LM as not having as much maintenance costs.
I wouldn't expect much difference. Gaskets need to be changed on all machines once in a while. Descaling is not encouraged by LM, but same with all machines, depending on your water it will be due after 5-10 years. Rotary pump is much more resilient than vibration pump, so here you'll probably save on maintenance compared to the usual pumps. But the only people who really know this are the mechanics who repair both LMs and other brands.
I owned the Uno PID, but the Duo is basically the same with a separate steam thermo block. The steam power of the DUO (I tested it just recently at the shop) is ridiculous compared to the Micra. Which can actually be ok for a beginner because it gives you more time to steam, but it can't compare. Brewing temp is also much more stable on the Micra, both during a shot as well as over several shots. The Ascaso is much smaller though. For a small kitchen and only a few shots per day it's probably fine.
It’s odd but really if you consider how similar this is to the mini, it’s essentially the biggest difference between the two and you’d save like 2k. Though on the flip you could buy my tile machines for a fraction of the regular marzocco price. You are paying for both quality of build (not necessarily function heavy) and the style.
All the reviews say about 6 shots. And then it doesn't need to cool down (like some E61), but it takes a minute or so to heat up. It's not an issue at all.
One last comment/question: now that I live in a good coffee house desert, how does a long term coffee snob , on social security, afford this machine and the quality grinder, df83?, to go with it?
That… is a great question. I myself am in a similar boat. I wouldn’t be able to afford the micra for example. But telling the world about it is free :) I have personally won a few contests and sometimes work with brands (though rarely) and so I haven’t had to buy most my stuff (granted I don’t own a lot of stuff) But there are PLENTY of cheaper quality machines that can be to your service :)

Hello! Thanks for all the love! Academia is essentially a small coffee museum/school/cafe in Florence Italy. It is open to the public but I have a video on the way about it so you don't have to fly to Italy haha.
@@EmileeBryant you said something like: a daughters review”. In my case more like a granddaughter. All of that heightens my appreciation for you and Lance.I’m in the coffee desert of nw Connecticut now… ☹️
Nah. I went there just to see it. I wasn’t prompted to say anything and I made sure to simply introduce it and show the features as a “first look” vs a “review”, because I didn’t own it and a review would be incorrect without prior testing and usage. This is an introduction to what the machine is and does. That being said it’s still a work horse and functions almost identical to the linea mini. Still has thermal stability issues after 5 or so drinks in a row and of course a huge let down is not having flow control unless you plumb it in. (In 2023 that’s a rough sell) otherwise it’s as sturdy and nearly identical to the mini in most aspects.
@@EmileeBryantThank you for posting your impressions of the machine and its specs. Also, thank you for your reply. However, in the video you were so complimentary with the only slight criticism being a drop off after back-to-back usage. Even that was met with a strong explanation that the machine is not intended to be used that way. Therefore, this video seems more like an endorsement than any unbiased impression of the product. That’s just a constructive observation but nonetheless I enjoy and learn much from your videos. Keep up the good work!
Small correction, the linea mini also features a heat exchanger for the water that goes to the brew boiler, but it's not on the outside of the steamboiler, but on the inside. Probably cheaper this way, but I suspect not so stable for multiple shots in a row.
Love this comment because I asked the same thing when it was explained. Heat exchangers are a thing yes! In this case it is indeed a copper tube wrapped around the steam boiler. You can see it in the video if you look close. Lance has a great video as well were he talks over how it gets mixed with cooler what to get a specific temp prior to entering the brew head.
@@EmileeBryant Yeah, I saw it in the video and it's very clever. But also one of the cost cutting features, since the old Linea Mini also has one, but it goes on the inside of the steam boiler. More efficient, but also more expensive (and probably overkill for home use). Great work with the video, I'm jealous of you guys playing with it so soon!
Was kinda joking at there since I likely wont buy the machine anyway. and yeah 4k... is P steep. That might the biggest drawback really. But I think its a nice option for those that originally had eyes set on the MINI being 2k more
@@EmileeBryant in all fairness, they should gift you one. And yes, it's a beautiful machine and judging by La Marzocco`s 2021 revenue report (tl;dr) summary even a nice option for a quiet a few people. Anyway, thanks for the video.

@@EmileeBryant true, but in all honesty, exclusive and early access to a hot new product is kind of a currency as well. I feel that. It can totally accommodate small scales like a Luna but something larger like a pearl or in that size range is a Nono :\ But also volumetrics are unreliable. What I think would really change the game is if they built the scale into the drip tray and it fed information to the machine just like the new linea pbs
@@EmileeBryant There's a drip tray available for the Micra that has the space for a specific scale built in. I don't use a scale so I forgot where I saw it, but it can be found if someone really wants that.
$4000 and you get a weird looking, part-plastic portafilter. No, just NO!. And the paddle is just an on/off switch, right? So just put in a regular rocker switch or button. Extremely reputable companies are putting out cost cutting products just to try enter the home market price point. (I'm staring at you Mahlkonig X54.) Is the portafilter still using standard 58mm? And is it plumable?
It is still a 58 mm. But wow you asked a fantastic question about plumbing. I do not know because I didnt ask at the time but I FOR SURE find out and update in the comments.
Yes you can
Yes you can, I think that also activates the preinfusion by using the line pressure
Plumbing is possible but you'll have to buy the kit. It's not cheap.
Love your channel,
I’m naming you ‘The Coffee Queen’👸
Thank you! Welcome to the coffee cult!
With a price of about 3,900 dollars, this device is really expensive. By paying 3,700 dollars, you can buy a lelit bianca device, which in my opinion is really better!
It is interesting to know that there is a free bottomless filter on this device. If you have access, be sure to test this device. I think you will like it.
I have a bianca. It works so good. But now after 2 years I think to change only for passion not for searching something better. I want to buy a micra....
A family of 10 People in the house who all drink coffee… I think that means too many kids still live at home and/or grandma grandpa are living with you
I lived in a treehouse for about 4 years in college and the family that lived in it prior was a family of 8 in a 320 sq ft home. The wildest thing I’d ever seen.
Oh you gonna win that latte art challenge
I ended up with oat milk so we will see 😆😅
Cool and passionate way to introduce the LINEA MICRA features! Thanks! Love it, when people getting emotional about coffee machines, and telling it's super cuuute :D :D
Will poke my old boss in the office, if he is selling his Linda Mini now, considering these warm-up capabilities (with putting COVID WFH behind us) :D
Wonderfully edited and cool outfit btw.! Well done!
“It being small does not mean it didn’t pack a punch” 😂
Nice Video, I love your voice :)
Thank you kindly! (Says with the heaviest rasp) ❤️
Definitely understood all that because the hands those add a language upgrade! lol😀
Happy my sign language gibberish is doing the trick!
its like the linea mini, mini!
LMLM LMlm
Sooooo much knowledge well presented!!!! Thank you 😻
So glad you enjoyed the video!
Very nice overview 👏
Just started watching your videos again, as I'm trying to improve my latte art.....have you also lost weight ? Your looking well....Glad to see !
She’s always looked perfectly like a coffee educator.
That’s sweet of you. Welcome to the coffee cult that is this channel!
I think while I was in Italy I was a bit lighter but then ate my weight in meat and wine 😂😂
@@EmileeBryant absolutely tight about enjoying yourself! I obviously didn't want to be that kinda weight judgment type of person...But you got my drift ! You were radiant! Toured Italy myself years ago, it shaped my love of coffee!
Also currently waiting for the pitcher you recommend, WPM..5 days to wait to UK !
@@glen.moralee I absolutely agree and I hope it didn't sound offensive!
She's taught me alot .
@@meteor-eo6ze that’s so exciting!! Make sure to send updates on how you like it!
It tastes a learning curve but can be tons of fun!
it does not tell me if the steam is as powerful and dry as on the linea mini…😊
It’s a smaller steam boiler BUT it does steam pretty much identical to the mini
@@EmileeBryant thank you, it is important for me before buying.
@@elioteliotness9143 I also have a video of Lance and myself pouring art on it!
family of ten, everything need large size, not just espresso machine
LINEA mini will be more suitable for the big family, but 15min warmup time
Why do you keep saying "polymer" It's a plastic. Not sure what's so exciting about plastic. They should've made that with other premium materials.
Where is Academia? Is it a place normal coffee lovers can go?
Lived in Seattle for many years, kick around the coffee scene for years and even as an amateur would sneak into the annual coffee show. All of that heightens my appreciation for you and Lance.I’m in the coffee desert of nw Connecticut now… ☹️
Was this a commercial?
Is it $4000 because of the hybrid portafilter?
Nah it's because of the dual boilers and rotary pump
Was waiting for the scumbags at the very end hahaha
Kept it light for the marzocco video but it will be back!
What a great video. I want one!
@@flipu2k correct. Old one had it as well. But had no piero cap.
@@LanceHedrick True, also the new one seems to have a PID on the steam boiler, nothing wrong with having more control...
I like how you worry about portafilter prices while discussing a machine that is priced at almost 4k.
@@iamkayotto I don’t think they do gifting 🤔 but also that would make me mighty biased and I’m just thankful I get to make fun videos for people. I don’t need fancy toys or perks as I slowly descend into madness in my studio making a musical about espresso. 😅
@@EmileeBryant true, but in all honesty, exclusive and early access to a hot new product is kind of a currency as well. Meaning, people are not going to trash it since they want to maintain the relationship. That being said, I immediately do believe it is a great product, not least since I want it to be. I might not need fancy toys or perks either, yet I often find myself wanting them #consumerism. I am glad to hear your espresso musical is coming along well, I imagine 30 second, energetic raw punk and hardcore songs as a musical translation of espresso. Well, now I am stuck with "Coffee Mug" by the Descendents in my head for the rest of this cloudy Sunday...adequate.
Two videos in one week? The scumbags have been spoiled 🙏🏿
My time is a fair sacrifice for our humble (yet deadly) coffee cult.
The plastic spouts “save you so much money so you don’t have to buy a bottomless portafilter”……. Ya, savin’ money on a $4000 machine. Sorry, for that price they should be including multiple portafilters.
I dunno... a $3900 espresso machine and so much hype around the convertible portafilter? A second (dedicated) portafilter is like what, $50-$100?
PID ??
The justification for the plastic dual spout attachment doesn't pass the BS test. It's plastic! It should be metal.
Guys, listen
I want it.
I hate that I’m priced out of these nicer machines
For the price that is a massive no from me. Lelit Bianca V3 for me.
Hard pass sadly. For $6,000 USD they could have included a naked portafilter with a regular one. "Polymer" is plastic and it can break.
Too small, cannot even accomodate a scale. Since it is not volumetric, a scale is a must.
I feel that. It can totally accommodate small scales like a Luna but something larger like a pearl or in that size range is a Nono :\
But also volumetrics are unreliable.
(I'm staring at you Mahlkonig X54.) I love La Marzocco and I very much wanted to be impressed by the Micra, but for that amount of money, the machine and portafilter should be better.
히야 이쁘다...히야 비싸다...
For $4000 it's not a decent price.
Got Bless Emilee Bryant 🙏☕️
