    On May 6, 1954, just under one year after New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Nepalese mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first humans to reach the top of Mount Everest, another seemingly insurmountable barrier was crossed- a human being ran the mile in less than four minutes.

    • @evernewb2073

      "speedrunning" as applied to running faster would be more like going over every aspect of running to figure out an ideal methodology for your body then analyzing your performance as you practice to find every scrap of wasted effort, and more to the point find the root cause of the wasted effort so you don't have to think about not doing it.
      in short speedrunning is just plain doing it right, but you actually do the work to figure out what "right" is analytically instead of, well, that 4-minute standard is an excellent example of accepting baseless assertions.
      I used to think that it was a common myth that 4 minutes was once considered impossible: there were several kids in my middle school that could do ~355 to 4 regularly, 3 of them could even keep up ~4/mile for a 4 mile course...come to think of it none of those three were in track, go figure.

    • @sandwich434
      @sandwich434 3 роки тому

      Evernewb lol why are you lying. There is not a middle schooler alive that can break 4. Also, running 4 flat pace for 4 miles would make them elite runners who could break world records set by adults. Very believable.

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 3 роки тому

      @random human @random human and yet that's what happened.
      ...huh, actually trying to look up your claim all I get is the first 10 pages of google search spitting out "sub 4-minute mile" articles, apparently if it's not an official category almost nothing gets recorded on it.
      closest I could find were articles on endurance runners keeping up paces like 4:45/mile for over 2 hours.
      ^your body only carries about 40 seconds of peak performance even if you train explicitly for that, after the atp cycle runs out you switch over to other energy systems, endurance runners focus on running efficiently and training to recover their atp cycle faster and maintain more energy throughput from their other energy systems since they are almost literally just running at the rate at which they recover, basically if you can keep up a full run after the first minute then you can keep up _most_ of a full run right up until your lungs stop functioning correctly chemically and you're suddenly much more concerned with not dying than with running.
      the simplest rule in biomechanics says being bigger makes you exponentially worse at this so if anything an adult being even remotely able to keep up with middleschoolers over long distances is the weird bit here.
      in my case I could keep up about 4:05 for a mile for about 20 minutes before almost literally falling over on the spot, slow it down to ~4:30 and it was an hour, at around 5/mile I never actually had occasion to run long enough to find out how long I could keep it up, running around in the woods on a mountain was just _what I did_ on a daily basis...probably helped that I spent most of my time in a life or death crisis state, people who grow up like that are NOT human-standard right down to a chemical level...come to think of it I should probably be more worried about what cray and sam's childhood was like if that's actually a major factor, cray was even faster than me for anything under half an hour and sam wasn't far behind...it would also go a bit towards explaining why none of the under-4-for-1-mile kids I actually knew anything about personally were in any sports teams, you don't want jack shit to do with clubs when school is *_NOT_* your friend.

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 3 роки тому

      @random human yeahhhh, kinda wondering if there is something going on messing with the ability to report those times, if the track at my elemntary/middle/high school somehow wasn't actually the measurements they said it was (they were all next to eachother, with the track and each school's field areas vaguely in the center of an L, they shared the track), and if the "none of those people were in any sports clubs" thing is a strong general trend. because seriously, there was an entire group of kids regularly finishing miles near or below 4 minutes in my school with 3 of us able to keep up a similar pace over long distances. anywhere with a heavier focus on keeping kids physically fit like, say, most of japan's school system should reasonably be showing at least _some_ similar times in a more formal recording situation than being stuck on the track with a third of the rest of the school in pe class every friday and the odd field day event.
      it's almost a hard rule that capable people don't join clubs but there would have to be _some_ exceptions, and I at least hope that the reasons for that aren't quite so universal in other countries education systems.
      ...maby there's something going on with "correct" running form being mechanically incorrect? that's definitely not something that would be standard between different people (or even completely consistent within the same person from day to day, or the start of a race to the end of it, your weight distribution and fluid mechanics change as you go) and institutionalized systems have held up blatantly incorrect bullshit for literally thousands of years pleeeenty of times in the past, it's pretty much explicitly what they are designed to do.
      honestly having a hard time guessing here since I've got almost literally zero experience with the sorts of situations that would actually be recorded officially, just finishing my required run 10 minutes early to a dirty look from the pe teacher and the occasional murder attempt after class.
      ^likely mostly unrelated to running fast: kids do some fucked up shit when the authority figures in a situation make it clear that they are okay with it, I've had teachers hand kids weapons and tell them to kill me right there in the middle of class and cops called to the school promise to provide an alibi, I was absolutely open season.

      I'm currently 200 lbs and trying to go back to the gym. This video made me look back at my mile time back in high school - I plateaued at ~6min/mile. I wondered how fast that was, and as you said it's 10mph. I was like what??? I run like 5-6mph for 1/2 mile and get winded, how the hell did I continuously run a mile at 10mph!

      Never compare a treadmill to actual running on the ground. Completely different. If you ran an actual mile, I guarantee that you wont run a 6 min mile.

      Money Mule Momentum of a treadmill helps you vs only your leg muscle. Also the ground is moving under you on a treadmill , therefore the time your not on the treadmill is time you aren’t actually running (both legs off the ground) but the treadmill still records it. Those seconds adds up and momentum (similar to running downhill) give you a false mile time

He also ran 3:58 in the state meet his senior year and ran 3:55, beating olympic champions in high school. so far only 10 high schoolers have done so, 3 in the 1960s, 1 in the 2000s, amd the rest within the last 8 years.

    I have the honor of training with Roger Banister and pacemaker Chris Chataway at Oxford Universities Iffley road athletics track throughout the summer of 1953. I remember then. Roger saying after an exceptional time for the mile that. "I can now see a "Four-minute-mile" is within reach."
    I represented my school & north Oxfordshire schools in atheltics. Specializing in the 100 yard & 220 sprints. The Half Mile. The Shot Put. & Discus.
    That is why my school "Easington Modern School Banbury" arranged for me to attend the training sessions.
    Today (2021) I am 84 years old and still do my one hour powerwalk (Regardless of he weather) & can be seen at any time between 4am & 5,30am in the morning along Kenilworth Road Balsall Common.
    I often get a wave or beep from passing traffic.
    Please give me a wave if you ever see me.

    Great video. I'm looking for information about the effect of technology (shoes+) and training techniques on beating the 4-min mile in particular. It's usually heralded as a psychological breakthrough, and it certainly was, but I've read that Bannister had shoes made that were 33% lighter just before breaking the barrier and his training techniques were unique and based on his medical knowledge and theories. In your video, you mentioned year-around training as a new idea that surfaced at some point. Can anyone point me to an article or video on this topic? Or this channel could take up the challenge. Thanks.
