  • Twitch changed their policy on certain kinds of sexual content/body parts (again). Some of this is fine, some of this is very weird, and some of it sucks.

Elementary school also sometimes called grade school (K to 5th or 6th grade/year) is the US equivalent to primary school in AUS or the UK, as far as I know. Some school districts in the US have middle school (6th to 8th grade/year) and others have junior high school (7th to 9th grade/year) then high school will be the last 3 or 4 grades/years depending on if your school district has a middle school or a junior high school.

My understanding was that sex scenes and nudity in games IS now allowed as long as the primary focus of the game isn't sexual (i.e. hentai games) and you aren't using any unofficial mods to cause nudity or sexual acts in the game. That's at least my understanding of their new terms, and I feel that is the perfect way to handle it.

They tip toe around it as they feel like if they put it in their games, big daddy Blackrock or other investors will not invest in them causing them to lose out on cashflow. As I have seen from interviews, Mr Fink of Blackrock is pretty much bent on providing politics in video games and establishment of studios such as "Sweet Baby Inc" to artificially increase their ESG are forcing companies to play safe and not take creative liberties in Videogame character looks as much as I think they would like to.

It’s interesting. Amazon is in a position to make an interesting business move.
They can legitimize and make the porn industry even safer…. And it could make them a boat load of money.
Twitch needs to completely separate the two. Twitch Gaming and Twitch Chat. Keep it separate for advertisers. Keep it separate for users. Keep it separate for creators.
I don’t see how this could be a bad thing for anyone including Amazon.

While I think this makes sense, it also makes me think "Twitch Chat" would tank the ability of "Twitch Gaming" to sell ads. If Twitch becomes more publicly associated with the sex industry, that's just going to be what big advertisers see it as, regardless of the brand's own attempt at separation. As things are right now, gaming can still be at the fore when Twitch works with advertisers. But as you're pointing out, this is Amazon, and they can eat any cost they choose.

I think nudity as you proposed in museums and such is understandable because it's attempting to draw or sculpt reality and there is an art and dedication to it. Streams that are doing live model sculpting or drawing would fall into this same category for me.
The streams that are drawing overtly sexual representations of nudity don't belong on Twitch in my opinion. It only affects me when Twitch has recommended them when that's not what I want. If there is a way that it doesn't negatively impact my experience on Twitch or change the platform for the worse then I guess more power to those people who are looking for that.
*EDIT* to add that I totally agree that there is a precedent for nudity in games also being an artform tho my personal wish wiuld be that we get that in the form of nudity that is story serving and not just sexualized nudity for its own sake

Unfortunately for Internet media, selling sex is undeniable in our society, but with twitch I think they know financially they cannot deny the money that comes from dressing scantily.
I think in our disconnected society, sexual content with streaming will pull men more and yonger boys + men will by nature walk towards that whether they value non sexual content or not. Its financially beneficial for twitch.
I think it should be more limited in streaming specifically, or at least controlled because twitch creates a more personal connection regardless of the content. Video games and even TV/film is much different in this regard.

It's kind of a silly argument since the context is so different. People wear swimsuits at the beach to get tan and to bathe in water without getting their other clothes wet. The town square is also 'in public' but a bikini is less appropriate in that setting. The context for a bikini on a twitch stream when playing games at home is 100% intended as sexual exposure, and that intention is very rarely acceptable in public, and certainly not when it comes to kids. Let IRL streamers at the beach wear bikinis, but maybe don't play League in a thong and nipple-pads.
As a guy who got introduced to porn when I was 8 and have been strugling with a porn addiction for nearly 15 years, it's very hard to stop kids from being exposed, but there are real and serious consequences and Twitch has already established itself as something entirely different for the most part, so it will be a gateway for many boys that previously had no intention.

@@MrBizteck I have, I grew up on an island where beaches and rivers were a popular pass time but not accessible 24/7 or the click of a button. Kids had school, chores and other activities and yes the beaches were supervised. Ppl on the beach in bikinis also weren't specifically there for the express purpose of showing you their body, they're just there minding their business. Content creators on the other hand do however create content or tailor content to be sexual for views and monetization. So no these are not the same thing.

People were up in arms over gambling on Twitch because of its addictive quality. But no one seems to care about Porn/Sex addiction - which can become extremely dangerous. Just like gambling, your brain receptors get fired off when it comes to sexual content. And content creators know this, and are leveraging it. Children DO use Twitch, and can easily fall down the rabbit hole.
That isn't even getting into how toxic porn can be with men (it further fuels their objectification of women, as well as gives them a warped view of intimacy and what sex is). I'm not being a prude and saying NO porn allowed. I mean like anything in life, adults can responsibly engage with things. But this just seems hypocritical of Twitch and all those constantly policing things like gambling when Porn and sex addiction can be incredibly destructive (especially when it targets kids).
To be clear I think gambling is worse because of how it plays on your brain. But read up on the research done on porn, and it can really ruin lives. I don't think it's healthy when millions of men are forming parasocial relationships with streamers because of titulation. This is just gonna further increase that.

There’s a difference between bikini on the beach vs on stream by the way; interactivity. Twitch streamers that do this usually invite viewers to donate and they’d perform certain actions that viewers ask them to do. It’s weird imo.
Additionally, parts of society where people already are lacking social skills and human contact, further give into the online para social relationships and that’s a never ending cycle. But that’s a whole separate topic that I have strong feelings for any way. I wish people would just stop looking at the streamers as anything more than an entertainer who is making money off of their online interactions with the viewers, and that people would take online social interactions with a bit more discretion in mind than just “omg my queeen/king deserves all my rent this month”.

I think the problem is simple - Twitch is trying to have it's cake and eat it too. If they want to allow sexual content on their platform it needs to be 18+, or better yet, make it so you need to have a verified 18+ account to view any stream with the sex /nudity tag.
Also (I'm a fan of yours btw so pls dont take it personally) you have a very prominant position in the games industry. You've worked at IGN, SMS, Funhaus, run your own awards ceremony etc. You're an established and respected name in the industry, so of course you're going to have a stable and growing presence on twitch regardless of what you wear. But the simple fact of the matter is that on a homepage with only a thumbnail to help land a new viewer, those wearing more provocative attire will probably get chosen bc as you said, sex sells.
I do believe that dressing in a certain way or being more aesthetically pleasing helps to facilitate growth, viewership and watch time. I dont believe its particularly fair that people can blatantly exploit this fact in increasingly more provocative ways and be rewarded for it, whilst others can't. Just my two cents

Hey! Really appreciate the perspective given here and definitely agree that for Twitch, this is the better course of action over censorship. That being said though, there is a growing political push in the US and possibly the UK and Australia now, to introduce laws that will require verifiable government issued ID to be able to access adult content online which, given how even large businesses such as a Telephone Company (side eyes Optus) can't guarantee customer security and a well earned skepticism of websites that claim to never store sensitive information, has me worried.
How this ties into Twitch's new policy in my mind is that regardless of whatever steps are put in place to keep under legal age people out of the adult section, lawmakers and others vested in this movement will cite Twitch for all its young audiences, skip on the finer details, and rail relentlessly (pun intended) to push their agenda through.
Anyways, that's just my Tin Foil hat view on this. Genuinely hope for the best though and that the adult entertainment industry can be more legitimized.

Get all of the people that stream with their cleavage, do hottub streams and all of the suggestive things, give them a "safe haven" and make them a "cam girl"-ish type of enviroment where they can bait people for subs and bits, while at the same time purge things like this from normal twitch.
It could be a win for everyone - Twitch gets a buttload of cash from a site that carefully balances on the edge of being sexuals and all of the OF girls have a free space to thrive. Just a wild thought.

Because they don't want to split their user base. Part of the reason why advertisers and such pay so much money is because of the amount of people their ads can reach. Splitting the user base means fewer people are exposed to it. Also, they don't actually care if minors are viewing sexually explicit content. They are only trying to save face to placate people into thinking that they are doing something to moderate or curate their platform. The more, horny 13-year-old boys with inattentive parents who want to watch titty streams only helps twitch/amazon. It's the internet and one must anticipate to be exposed to anything at any given time. Corporations will always exploit every loophole they can if it means they can squeeze another dollar out of it. It is ultimately up to parents to monitor what their children are consuming. I have kids, and I don't let them on many sites, like tiktok or twitter, or twitch, because even if they aren't watching a sexually explicit stream, who is to say that a streamer isn't going to pause their fortnite game to talk to the audience about sexually explicit topics, or even religion or politics (things parents generally don't want their kids to learn about from an untrusted source). There are plenty of other places where there are actual, kid-friendly, curated streams for children to watch.

I feel the argument of "it steals viewers from female streamers" is better framed (or reframed) as creating an environment where new streamers who are female are expected to allow for that type of interaction or viewer in their stream. It creates an environment that then fosters a next generation of streamers. UA-cam shows this brilliantly. People copy what is successful and with very few successful core gaming female streamers the future generation won't pop up. Just like how screaming and shouting content creators gave us XQC and Ninja etc etc

So that's why I kept seeing that Morgpie thumbnail for some reason. YT keep recommending me videos regarding this current Twitch drama(?)

Elementary school (grades 1-4), middle school / junior high (grades 5-8), high school (grades 9-12) is what the schools in the US are called. There's also pre-school and kindergarten for before elementary school.

Apparently it's a hot take, but I don't think there should be ANY sexualized content on a website with an age gate of only 13. It's not about "reducing it to a childrens' website", it's about a complete lack of segregation of content currently. There's really no barrier to prevent kids from accidentally stumbling onto that stuff very easily whether through channels with high viewer counts or just happening to be in whatever category they're looking at. I don't know if the changes have come into effect yet, but even right now going to the browse page and live channels I see three different women that are either seemingly completely nude or showing mostly bare ass in the top 10 channels. There's no censoring or blocking on the thumbnails, it's just straight up out there in the open. I've had tons of times in the past where I'd had that content shoved in my face through recommended and other pages, too, and I have never even watched ANY of those types of streams. Twitch simply pushes it because it's popular and earns them money, and the recommendation system doesn't differentiate between non-sexual and sexual content, only what is doing well at a given time. I've got no problem with camsites or sexual content in spaces that are intended for it, but I do not think Twitch should figuratively edge itself into that market since that's clearly what their goal is.
Also, there is a difference in seeing a woman in a bikini doing normal things and one that is doing overtly sexual things, same goes for the nude art and everything else. Just because there is no literal sex happening in a depiction does not mean that it isn't sexual in nature with particular poses, implications, etc. You can't really compare this to seeing video games you don't want to watch, the type of content is so vastly different. Sexual content is predatory to particular types of people, whether intentional or not, like younger people, porn addicts, etc.

I'm with you. If they want to include adult content then change the age restriction to 18+. Alana's examples are also a bit wanting. Someone in a bikini on a beach minding their own business is vastly different from someone putting on a show and asking for donations. Kids are generally supervised on a beach and you definitely can't be there 24/7. It's just not the same thing

      A) The age gate is not strictly 13 though is it...the actual ToS states the following...
The Twitch Services are not available to persons under the age of 13. *If you are between the ages of 13 and the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction of residence, you may only use the Twitch Services under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian* who agrees to be bound by these Terms of Service.
If parents want to prevent their kids looking at stuff that is now being allowed on Twitch then they should be responsible for monitoring what their own kids see and interact with...which they should be according to the ToS.
      B) The user stats don't suggest that there is a lot of kids of that age using the site...
      from 2022 user demographic analytics
      16-24 22.3%
      25-34 49.7%
      35-44 17.5%
      45-54 1.9%
      65+ 1.3%
So that means 7.3% of users between 13-15....and, as mentioned, they should be only accessing the site with the consent of a parent or guardian...
      C) Sorry to break this to you...but believe me, kids will know exactly how to find and access far more 'adult' content than what Twitch are going to allow. That's just a fact. And an 'are you 18' check button does not and will not stop them. It is delusional to think that it would. I bet if you ask guys that are around 20 to 30 if they had either looked up or seen pron on the internet before they were 18 that 90% would say 'yes, of course'...and the other 10% are liars.
I have to say, I don't know why anybody bothers watching those that stream that content on Twitch when there's hardly a shortage of that material on the internet, but I find the 'but wut about da kids' argument to be somewhat overblown. The most Twitch should do is keep it off the main directory and in the specific categories it is allowed in. The rest is down to the viewer. If they don't want to see it, then they shouldn't go and watch.
      D) ALL the other relevant current social media is also rife with adult material....Twitter, TikTok, Instagram etc. So why is it that Twitch has to exclude themselves from doing the same also? Or why are people not clamouring for that content to be removed from those platforms?

I think a big part of the problem is that Twitch is still primarily viewed as a game streaming site first. So, even adults who use Twitch/play games get “concerned” when sexual content comes into play.
If they started off having games, gambling, sex, etc…this would have been figured out ages ago. Like, (for multiple/bad reasons) I doubt this would be as big of deal on Kick.

why people can't comprehend that is their company and they can do with it whatever they want,it doesn't matter for what it is known, if they want to change, they can, simple. But people out here treating twitch like they some of the owners or something, it's really delusional

@@Yuuki_Asuna If a customer doesn't like a product, they're going to complain. Or worse, they just leave for another platform. Of course they can do whatever they want, you can also do whatever you want, but sometimes there are consequences.

Good points across the board. I hope women continue to get the bag and all audiences are seeing more of the content they want and less of what they don’t want thanks to the tags. Also a great point about content in the actual games.

One argument I heard is that other streamers are afraid that Twitch will face its own 'adpocolypse' and ruin the platform for everyone else, and thus people that want to make this type of content should be relegated to platforms that already allow it. I don't watch Twitch, so I don't really pay that much attention, but it sounds like a fair argument to me

I don’t think twitch will allow that. They’ll separate the content long before they’re willing to lose ad revenue.
