This is a Viewers’ Comments & Questions special episode with Jonny Kinkead of Kinkade Guitars in Bristol. If you’re wondering why there are two spellings, Jonny got so bored of people spelling his name wrong, he decided to make the company name ‘Kinkade’, as that is how people tended to spell it!

PLEASE NOTE:
The setup video Dan talks about in this video isn’t uploaded yet! It’ll be a week or two…
Anyhoo, at the tail end of 2018, we both had our main guitars refretted by Jonny. That process was documented in a video here: • Dan & Mick's Guitars G...
Following the refrets and that video we’ve had a tremendous number of questions about the process, Jonny and other things… so Dan went back to Bristol to ask the man himself.

I could watch a 4 hour interview with this hammer legend, and enjoy every second. What an amazing, lovable, genius. Wow. Thanks for this guys!
Hammer Legend ? are you on email ?

You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are bored like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been streaming with my brother these days :)
@Ayden Fisher Yea, I've been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself =)
You should record a video every year with this man. Thanks for sharing the work of this artist wisdom with us.
There's really something about that guy that warms my heart. I don't know if it's the fatherly vibe he exudes, the skill he has and obviously unconceited way that he describes his process, or simply his great, British voice, but whatever it is there's no mistake, he's one of those kinds of people that you can tell make the world a better place for his being in it.
Mick and Dan aren't bad either. Maybe... Haven't seen either of you after a few pints.
Really enjoy these bonus episodes. Refrets, Strat Blog., VCQs....keep all this stuff coming.
Please express my sincere thanks to Mr. Kinkead! His willingness to share his craft with That Pedal Show viewers is appreciated immensely. I've read a lot over the years about refrets and would never attempt to do it on a quality instrument. It's best left to an artisan such as Mr. Kinkead. His explanation of the vibrating string envelope is dead on. I've understood it, but never heard it expressed so simply that it made total sense.
Holy crap, you’re making him an (occasional) contributor? That’s such a cool idea!! This is a great next step after starting to understand our pedals more. I’ve naturally gone down this road anyway - I started understanding tone better, and now I’m trying to learn about how to get the most out of my instruments via setups and maintenance. Love it.
I feel the same way. I just started playing electric after years of acoustic. TPS has helped me immensely. To add a spin off "That Johnny Show" would be pure icing on the cake.
I am so pleased to see Jonny being recognised like this. I am lucky to have met him when he built a guitar for me several years ago. I think he is a genius guitar craftsman and just such a lovely down to earth person.
I love TPS, and with that said, I must say that this is my favorite thing you’ve done on this channel. It is very cool that you are bringing a new audience to a person like Jonny, so his efforts, wealth of knowledge, and graciousness can be appreciated by so many. I am so glad to hear that we will see more of him. Everything about this is just a great feeling. Well done.
Jonny is the Bob Ross of luthiers.
Nailed it
respectfully disagree. Mark Erlewine is the Bob Ross of luthiers ;)

@@brendanlorimer not Dan Erlewine? I prefer his videos
It’s generational. People were more laid back then. By contrast, everyone today is like a robot on speed,
May Jonny have all the work he wishes, and no more, until he decides he has had enough. What a blessing that he allowed you to share some of his time with us. Cheers, and thanks!
"...but you might take a smidgen off, which is less than a millimeter..." DEAD! HAHAHAHAH!
I've been reliably informed that a smidgen is slightly less than a gnat's whisker, but a tad more than a bawhair
BravoColl - I feel very enlightened now. :)
As AvE might say, more than a blonde one, less than a red one... :)
This man is an absolute treasure to the guitar community. Can't wait to hear more from him!!
Yeeees.. more Johnny in the future. I absolutely love every second of him explaining something.
Just wanted to say thanks for your time. It's so interesting
The man has spoken, a smidgen is technically quantified as
Hi. About stainless frets, this is Juha Ruokangas view on that. Juha is a boutique guitar builder who is very high regarded worldwide. Quote:
"Some say stainless steel frets make a guitar sound brighter, and the playability suffers too. We’ve done a lot of A/B testing on this, and my conclusion is, that when stainless steel frets are expertly installed, dressed and buffed, the possible tonal difference is insignificant, and the playability is absolutely top notch - smoother than one can achieve with traditional fret material. Nevertheless, there are some rumours circulating around that “stainless steel frets are no good”. In my experience, the possible problems with stainless steel frets can be usually tracked down to poor installation, dressing and/or buffing. It is a hard material, and requires extra attention to detail - sloppy work gives sloppy result. So if you take your guitar to be refretted with stainless steel, be sure to have the job done by an experienced professional with good references. Some criticism towards stainless steel frets seems also to originate to factories who choose not to use stainless steel because it’s slower to work with and wears down their tools. And while this is very true - stainless steel does wear down tools cause it’s so hard - it doesn’t have anything to do with tone."
Interesting isn't it.
Johan Petersson exactly! A quality fret job is more important than the type of material used. I’m fortunate to have a master luthier re-fret a couple of my guitars. The stainless frets were done beautifully and now, 12 years on and many, many gigs later, the frets are still perfect (and shiny). I’m more than happy to have nickel frets, but they don’t last, they tarnish and they need polishing much more often. It’s also worth noting, that once a fretboard has had a few re-frets, it becomes increasingly difficult to get the frets to bed properly. Another good reason to do it once and do it properly.
As a finish carpenter, I always "size" the mating parts of any end-grain joints with diluted wood glue before the real glue-up, as in a 45 degree angle around a door frame. The reason for this is to stabilize the end-grain, and provide a sound, flat surface that will bond well. The fret slots create open end-grain on either side of each one. This "sizing" of the open grain by applying water before the glue accomplishes the same end: creating a stable, flexible surface for the fret''s tang to snuggle into. The use of superglue in this case is like turning either side of the fret slot into plexiglass.... inflexible and brittle. Wood glue will not adhere to any sort of metal; it is all about the stability of the wood itself and the wood retaining its own characteristics.
Such a pleasure to watch and listen to a true craftsman, who has obviously built a wealth of knowledge over a lifetime of actually doing, not just watching a video.
It's cool that excellent luthiers seem to get the same amount of enjoyment out of making a guitar play perfectly for a particular individual that we do when having inspiration hit when playing. My guy just smiles when he's perfectly dialled in the action to the point where he can hear it in my playing. Thanks for this vid, Dan.
I have the enormous good fortune to own one of Jonny’s guitars that he built for me in 2001. It has been played nearly every day since and is absolutely delicious. Recently I badly damaged the side and sent it back to him and he repaired it for a very generous price and it is impossible to find the repair. Jonny is an absolute gentleman and treats all of his clients exactly the same no matter who they are. Give yourselves a treat and join the waiting list to have him make a guitar for you. It will be a guitar for life. Thank you Jonny.
Mr. Kinkead seems like such a humble and kind man despite forgetting more about guitars than most people know. A true treasure.
Johnny is an amazing craftsman and really enjoy watching and listening to him.
The quality and standards he sets are way higher than most guitar tech's, it may have grown but the quality and knowledge and the genius of this man and his natural knowledge are not that common. Someone use the term Masterclass , this man is a master for sure. Loved watching this. On a side note something that we guitarists who have a little bit of how it works knowledge, this helps enormously when its time to get one set up , you can now ask with a good firm idea what is needed and what to expect. I have a great guitar tech in Mike Spicer in Hamilton, ON , and he is the Canadaian equivalent of this charming godsend of a man. Thank you for sharing this Dan and everyone at TPS
What Jonny does is not what every guitar repair person does. I chose not to use the word luthier because every other guy that replaces a nut and changes strings calls himself a luthier, unlike of course Jonny who is most definitely a luthier.
I myself a very talented repair guy. I've rebuilt and modified tons of guitars, electric and acoustic. I rarely watch these kind of videos because the rarity of finding someone who has the extra finesse matched with skill. This taught me quite a few little tricks to make my jobs easier and better. This was beautiful.
Tons of love from Canada as always :)
xoxo
I also wanted to add that repairing an instrument is a completely different thing than building one from scratch. ;)
You can most definitely tell Jonny that I am a person that loves and thrives on knowledge of experienced people. He's a brilliant passionate man with tons of skill and I'm most thankful for him sharing it. It's now in me and I will be using it and sharing it. Huge hugs.
I agree 100%
@@kingjbone1 I used to watch dave and his world of stuff. Seems like an ok guy I guess, but he's definitely not anywhere near the caliber of repairman that Jonny is. Watch newer tutorials from Crimson guitars for what I would say is the best all around information for beginners.
one year plus later... enjoying the episode while 'stay at home' period. thank you.
He does have a nice voice. He could guide meditation and audiobooks. He is so pleasant.
Love his genuine innocence. He literally has no idea about the wonders these clips will do for his business!
I usually get some needed info from here and there and I don't favor that many of the Y.T. channels UnLess they have interesting content to grab my attention. I've seen a few videos of 'This Pedal Show' but like every other video that I've seen on Y.T., it gets lost in the back of my mind and fades away... But after bumping into the first Jonny Kinkead interview, man I got to tell you this is the first time an hour long interview of his refretting job kept me almost "hypnotized" until the end! Like the bed-side manner of a great doctor who treats his patients with humbleness, kindness & charm, I got hooked! His attention to detail and passion for the craft along side his charming personality, it's like a breath of fresh air... It's like being guided out of the Dark Ages into the Age of the Renaissance!! Almost like being with a Da Vinci sharing his precious secrets for all the lost luthiers out there to witness for the first time... He is a totally down-to-Earth loveable gentleman with the Harry Potter touch!
Now! I will make a habit of watching your show more often for as long as you guys make him a regular 'staple' on your show. Best addition to show that you've ever came out with! No doubt! Best Kindly Regards to Mr. Kinkead for sharing his knowledge with the world and with all those of us developing a passion for guitar luthier craftsmanship. Phoenix One.
Jonny is an absolute boss. He’s probably about to wind up with more work than any one man can do. Best advertisement ever! I know I’d let him work on mine.
Dan, I’ve been a huge fan of TPS for a couple of years now. I’ve loved every single episode you and MIck have put out. Watching the re-fret video and this one was just the icing on the cake! My favorite part was when Johnny mentioned word of mouth business. I’ve been doing light guitar repair and re-frets for only a couple of years now. I’ve even built a couple of guitars from scratch for myself. I started by working on my own guitars as well as simply buying cheap “trash” guitars at pawn shops just to practice. I’ve still got years to go “like Johnny said” before I get good at it but at the same time the minimal work that I’ve done has been well received by my clients and word of mouth has taken hold and I’m slowly building up clientele. Can’t wait for the setup video and future videos featuring Johnny’s knowledge. Keep up the good work!! And... as you guys would say in the U.K., cheers!!!
A quote that comes to mind..."The Master has erred more times than the Apprentice has tried"
Thanks a million, did my own refret a week ago, not perfect yet, had some problems not covered and lack of experience from my side, but seeing Johnny do it was a great help.
I refretted my strat!! Thanks 🤘👍
The re-fretting video was so educational and indeed very relaxing. I sent it to several of my guitar playing friends as well. One of my favorite TPS episodes ever and that's saying a lot!
Jonny made my Kinkade Kingsdown acoustic for me 10 years ago, and it was the best decision I ever made. He is a wonderful man and extremely talented craftsman. I cant recommend him enough. Great to see him on here sharing his knowledge.
Brilliant Dan! Thanks so much to you and Mick for bringing us so much great content. Between the main program, the Pick and Mix, VCQ and the vloggy specials I just cant think of any place I like as much as TPS.
I have a blue tele I call....blue and a red strat called...red.. lol great stuff guys!
Coming late to this and the re-fretting/setup videos; thrilled to watch Mr. Kinkead work. A consummate craftsman. Agreed with more people coming to this, in America, too. Cheers!
The genius that is Jonny Kinkead, an amazing man
I re-fretted my Greco strat from the 70's with stainless frets. Came out perfectly first time all you need really is a soldering iron, flush nippers, fret hammer, fretting file, super glue, fret wire and something to support the neck. Plus hours of UA-cam prep!!
Glad I'm not the only one thinking this. I dreaded starting on my first refret. Practised on a cheap neck and it came out just as fine as any CS out there. When you do some research you realize it's not so magical at all. Anybody who's a bit handy and wants to throw some time at it can do this sort of stuff.
That’s awesome having Johnny contribute to the show, his episodes are invaluable to guitarists, techs and luthiers. Cheers guys, Welcome Johnny!
Absolutely amazing! Lot of respect for him. Thanks guys and cheers to Master Kinkead! Want more of this, please.
What an indeed special episode! Thank you all for doing this.
What a lovely chap Jonny is. A real bonafide gentleman. Great to hear he’s going to be an occasional contributor to the show.
I would like to offer a BIG thank you to Jonny for doing this and sharing his great wealth of knowledge with us.
Hands up who'd be Jonny's apprentice ? Please pass on the knowledge.
I would pay to learn at his feet
I almost had that chance 40 years ago. He was with his brother SImon then. When they parted, he took on an apprentice from a government youth project.
Thanks so much for passing on my appreciation Dan, I'm very much a fan of guitar whisperers like Jonny, really looking forward to the rest of the series 👍👌
Loved this! Mr. Kinkead's Amazing and I'm so happy he's going to be on the show regularly 😊
What a wonderful, skilled, knowledgeable, humble legend of a luthier. We want more Jonny videos!
Sincerity, integrity, humility, ability, knowledge, and true passion; Thank you Dan, Mick, and Johnny. Oxford comma for life...as a matter of habit and oft neccescity.
Doh! Simon you get credit too!
It's all about the OC. Been questioned about it many times. Defending it stoically.
Thank you Johnny!!! Guys, I love the show more and more. Thank you!
Thanks guys! Loving this luthier stuff episodes! Blessing Jonny!
Need a Jonny t-shirt in the TPS store ASAP!
Great addition to the show!!! Absolutely want to see more of Johnny K!!
I can’t wait for part two! Pure gold, Cheers guys! 🍻🤘❤️🤘
Mr. Kinkead is a Legend. If I were in the U.K - I'd get my 2 Guitars to Him (without question). He is so Knowledgeable and Meticulous. Is there a Jonny Kinkead in NYC? I need his Passion, old-world-Craftsmanship, and Attention to Detail? ? ? Love this guy. Id work for him for Free - just to Learn ( honestly ).
A smidgeon = less than a millimeter. Love this guy.
Johnny is a legend. Good to hear we'll be seeing him regularly.
brilliant video and a pleasure to spend time listening to you both thanks
Superb stuff. I watched the refretting video not wanting it to end and same on this one. Often considering having my -94 Tele refretted at some point and these videos surely brought that thought up again. Please keep stuff like this coming.
Can't wait for more Johnny! Such good stuff from everyone on TPS. Happy to be a patron!
Fascinating and so insightful
Really is great listening to a life's experience and knowledge just passed on. Great job and many thanks
Johnny.
And Mick n Dan too..
Another fantastic video with Jonny. I watched the first and was so impressed but I'm sorry to say that I never commented so I'm putting that right now. Regarding people's comments on Jonny's 'relaxing' voice, I think that the main thing is that it's really comforting to listen to a master craftsman who doesn't seem to have a big ego but is really on top of his game. Thumbs up all round.
Thank you so much Jonny for the knowledge
Yes!! A follow up to the best episode ever!!
Please find a way to make him a regular. Love watching him at work - I've watched him fix Mick's fretboard a dozen times now.
Great episode. Thank you both.
The amount of knowledge, this great professional gives , was invaluable.
Awesome content guys. Great to hear about Jonny contributing to the show, he’s great. As someone who is re-building a cheaper Tele into a decent one , love to see and learn more about the Luthier craft itself with a passing of wisdoms in the trade; endless topics of interest there👌🏼
Dan another great informative video! Johnny is such a talent. You all are fortunate to have such a great lulthier! See you at NAMM 2019 this Thursday January 24.
Can't wait for the setup video. Great series
His knowledge is so vast n brilliant. That type of knowledge you can only get from endless experience.. it’s a dream of mine to apprentice with someone like this.. cheers guys. It’d be awesome if you guys did a ounce a month TPS set up tips n tricks VCQ with him.. I’d watch that religiously.. BTW congrats on reaching 175K subscribers
Haven't seen Jonny in years. Such a talented and all round lovely dude.
this guy is a king
if you enjoy watching repair videos and find them interesting and for sure, i love them, there are few other guitar repair/luthier channels that i watch to learn. Rosa Guitar works, Dave's world of fun stuff, and crimson custom guitars.
Oh YES! Wonderful to see this "bonus" episode. And regarding your "sign-off", Dan -- I think you've *already* started your "ASMR" channel! ;) Loving it.
Recently installed a new neck with stainless frets...because the guitar was slightly darker sounding,I figured it wouldn't hurt...worked out great...brightened it up very slightly (a little more snap, but not at all brittle) and they feel fantastic...that said, this was a special circumstance and I'd likely continue to use standard frets in the future...btw,it's a pleasure to witness this master's wisdom...can wait to see the setup!
What a legendary guy! Could watch for hours!!!
Top man. Thanks for the return to the workshop :)
This is so awesome.
Jonny is a treasure!
Really interesting stuff again. Quite chuffed that my original query about water usage was explained in depth.
Can’t wait to see the setup video! I’d love to know all the little tricks that go along with it!
The videos you guys have done with Jonny are, without doubt, some of the most interesting, informative, and different to what all other channels do.
I would love to see a regular series on guitar maintenence, repair, and building with Jonny. People with the wealth of knowledge, humble nature, and engaging character are few and far between.
Dan and Mick are OK too...
Dan saying “That’s amazing!” at the end gave me flashbacks to The Fast Show!
Nicee
Great video. Thanks!
One hour with this guy and you'd gain a lifetime of knowledge......great vid.
You find someone good by talking with and asking the best players!!! Only one guy in LA that's this good...... Master Jim Foote!!! Great video Mates; I could watch the Refret episode multiple times!!
I need more John Kincaid in my life, as a younger man starting out doing guitar maintenance more seriously, another source of information is always welcomed. However coming from such nice guy with the production that TPS brings in is like we say in Portugal "Ouro sobre Azul" (gold over blue, apparently it would highlight the beauty of the already stunning gold).
Great video guys! Super informative, cheers!
His knowledge is staggering, love this guy.
We love him too :)
Thank you. Another great show.
Thank you Jonny!
Da, thanks for doing this. It felt just a little rushed though. I’m not sure if either of you had time constraints, but if this video had been twice as long, no viewers would have been upset about it!
Thanks for this episode.
Thanks very much for this!
Glad yer putting this out there. So many people just dont have a clue about how a guitar works. Or even that you CAN get wood wet, for that matter. His answer was great! Just let it dry! Hahah!
It's not a flying saucer, it's a guitar.
Paul Guppy from Lancaster UK is a luthier and remarkably similar in manner to Johnny!. Paul builds harps mainly but does all the luthier work on everyone's guitars in the local area. I think promenade music in morecambe use him too so he is unofficially attached to a large music retailer. I suppose the best way to find these guys is to ask in your local music shop!.
This is like being invited into the Wizard's Workshop, twice.
Can Jonny join TPS?
Ps: thank you Daniel to do this kind of coverage! It means a lot to the guitar world! This is what everyone wants: to speak with a real very well experienced person so called luthier rather than reading fabric manuals or reading emails about how to fix your guitar!!
Love this episode. So much knowledge here. So thanks for this. 🖖🏼
The show and these episodes in particular have been just awesome. The workmanship, passion, knowledge, quality etc is a privilege to have been able to see and appreciate. I have one question which is most certainly not a disrespectful one which is to try to understand why or when it is better to consider a refret over a replacement neck? Thanks..
