  • And it's finished! I finally get to play my guitar after the last build processes…
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Dan here, hello! It's an emotional day, as the guitar I ordered over two years ago is finally finished and ready to play! Please join me as we watch Jonny take care of the final stages of build and finish, before I head back to the TPS studio to record it for the first time.
What do I think? Can I even think at all at this point? Hmmm…
This is part five of five. For more on Jonny and his instruments, visit www.kinkadeguitars.co.uk/
    Part One: • Dan's Acoustic Guitar ...
    Part Two: • Dan's Acoustic Guitar ...
    Part Three: • Dan's Acoustic Guitar ...
    Part Four: • Dan's Acoustic Guitar ...
Q: Why are you spelling Jonny’s name ‘Kinkead’?
A: Because that’s his name! The guitars are ‘Kinkade’, Jonny is ‘Kinkead’. He chose ‘Kinkade’ for the guitars because nobody could spell ‘Kinkead’ correctly.
Q: How did you record the guitar at the end?
A: Mick here, hello. The guitar is mic'd at the 12th fret and around the bridge area using Austrian Audio OC18 mics. They hit Meris 440 mic preamps set with flat EQ. In post I rolled off some of the sub 50Hz bottom end and boosted a couple of dB around 10-12kHz (the EQ is more about balancing for mic position/type than changing the sound of the guitar). A touch of Lexicon 224 plate reverb courtesy of the UAD plugin and we're done.
    Interesting bits and go-to sections…
0:00 The last thing to build, the bridge
    2:15 The bridge template

    13:25 Oiling the fingerboard
    14:06 Scratchplate? Maybe not

19:30 String spacing at the nut
    19:50 The K&K Pure Mini

This series has been probably the greatest I've watched in over 10 years of UA-cam addiction 😂. I never tire of hearing Jonny explain things and the fact you haven't drip fed us 1 video a week has been massively appreciated. Well done.

This seriously cannot be understated. From Johnny to Dan to everyone behind this channel, the thing that resonates (lol) with me the most is that everyone's doing it because they LOVE it. Releasing these videos on a schedule with teasers on twitter is what a UA-camr does. Ravenously editing and releasing without cutting any detail is the stuff of a GUITAR LOVER. It shines through in absolutely everything this channel does.

I held off on commenting until I completed the entire 5-part saga.
Words cannot begin to describe how satisfying inspirational, and beyond well worth the wait these videos were. If everybody went to work with the humility, the passion, the attention to detail, the kindness and the overwhelming care that Jonny possesses, every workplace would be better off.
The word "treasure" is often thrown around haphazardly these days when describing people....but when it comes to Jonny, that's really the only appropriate term that can be applied.
    He's a treasure.
And so are you, Dan. Not only for documenting this process for the purpose of showing the UA-cam world just how special Jonny is. But also for the fact that you're a genuine soul that exudes a pure and infectious joy for all things guitar-related.

As a primarily electric player, I would never have thought that this would have enthralled me to anywhere near the degree that it did. All those "sophisticated" tools he used, the pervasively wooden warmth of his workspace, how charmingly crowded it was, the incredible level of attention paid to the minutiae of the design, and then the building of suspense across 4 episodes and finally getting to hear it played- what a wonderful experience. This has been a true standout amongst your beloved catalogue, which I've been following for many years. Cheers/Happy New Year!

Well... its only the 6th of January but its been sorted already. My fave series of 2022 is: Jonny Kinkead building Dan a guitar. Nothing will top this. From Jonny's gentle yet enthralling explanation of every subtle nuance to the mind-boggling dexterity and sheer craftmanship of him, say, sculpturing the bracing with just his chisel and line of sight... while still talking! I've just had a peek at Jonny's pricelist. He doing himself. He could charge triple and his players/custodians of his guitars would still be getting value for money. Just sensational.

Nope. What I think got me was the care Jonny put into every little detail, (not to mention his personality) combined with his comments on the reluctance to let it go. What impressed me was the sound of all the pieces of wood from the top, back, body and neck to the braces. Before they were ever begun to be carved and created into an instrument you could hear the musical sound of each piece as it was being touched by Jonny's hands. Each timber had a tambor so to speak that made them seem destined for creating a fine musical instrument. My grandfather was an upholsterer who created furniture in the same old school handcrafted fashion and Jonny's shop reminds me so much of his. He would make me sand frames until the wood felt like glass and when I asked him what the point was as it was going to be covered with fabric and no one would ever know he just said, "I know". That's the kind of craftsmanship and pride in one's work that Jonny displays and can't be had from even the finest factory- made guitar. You are a lucky man Dan.

He basically made all his own tools, jigs and devices! And, he understands the “whys” to everything, from engineering to art. In my mind, this man is a true genius (and should be celebrated!!).

My favourite TPS episodes - incredible how humble and generous Mr Kinkaed was in revealing so much of how he builds his instruments. You are a lucky, lucky man Dan!

Man what an absolute couple of legends. This was such a pleasant series to watch! I can confidently say I haven't missed a single minute and enjoyed it all the way through, John is such sweetheart and very clearly passionate about his work. The level of detail and care that goes into his instruments really hit me when it came time for the truss rod, my goodness.
I know it's a stretch to even make this request (a very expensive one, at that), but if it's at all possible to do more detailed custom build series like this one, please don't even think twice about it.
I'll pledge to buy a T-Shirt if it means supporting another custom build like this haha. Congrats on the new instrument Dan, she's a beauty. Cheers from Michigan!

Congratulations! This was a great series to watch. In fact a bit nostalgic for me. I've built 2 acoustics with a Canadian luthier near me... altogether taking almost 2 years. And while there were a number of things done differently... watching Johnny's process definitely brought me back to those days. There will never be a better sounding guitar than the one you put this much effort into (even if your effort was more watching/filming/editing!)

Fear not! Or at least not so much. Jonny is in excellent company, with the likes of Rosie Heydenrych, Rory Dowling, Jason Kostal, and many others producing amazing instruments--and passing their skills on to apprentices in their growing businesses. At times it feels like we're in a bit of a Luthiery Renaissance. Let's hope!

So many have said it all already - some of the most mesmerizing, instructive, fascinating, artistic content I have ever seen on UA-cam. To watch someone genuinely pursue their passion and craft in such intimate surroundings is indeed heartwarming. Watching Johnny chase his passion in the workshop was exactly like watching Japanese steel artisans making knives or American art ironworkers or anyone who pours their heart and soul into making something with their own hands....Just sublime.
But I have one huge question: Does Johnny have an apprentice? Someone he trusts to carry on his work and name? Or will we lose the Kincade brand forever at some point?
And yes, no pickguard was the only way to go.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  2 роки тому +2

He doesn’t currently have an apprentice, but as you can see, there’s so little room in his workshop that it would be a challenge. Who knows what the future holds though

    • @joesatchton212
      @joesatchton212 2 роки тому +3

@@ThatPedalShow Thanks Dan, Mick, whoever replied :) I was kind of afraid that might be the case - certainly Johnny's workshop is perhaps not conducive to more than one artisan at a time.
Although I do hope that somehow, and soon, Johnny may be willing and able to pass on his particular brand of magic to the next generation and beyond.

It's when you see the level of dedication Jonny has put into the build that you realise similarly priced, 'mass produced', acoustics from the likes of Gibson etc. are nowhere near the same value for money.
Please tell me Jonny has an apprentice.

FANTASTIC SERIES! Hopefully by now we're ALL clear on "Kink[ead|ade]" spelling. But I was hoping the mystery of the "Bros." might be cleared up at some point.... Clearly there's scope for "uncut" and "bonus" versions. :))

Dan, this was a fantastic series of videos! I'm glad you shared as much of Jonny's process as you did. It was super interesting. I've built a couple electric guitars from scratch so I can appreciate how much time and skill goes into a build but Jonny's passion for the build is next level. This was a very cool thing to watch. Thanks for sharing the experience!

I’m a hobbyist woodworker AND a hobbyist guitar player. This 5-part series was one of the best things ever on UA-cam. The tutorial on shellac application is exactly how I finish nicer pieces of furniture (not the French polishing though!). Everything Johnny does in finishing the guitar is pretty much exactly how fine furniture is done, right down to the cabinet scraper, pore filling, all of it. What a great 5 hours of TV!

Dan you are the custodian of a true gem.
From start to end and all the previous attention and care embedded before the order and build, your luthier is a true artisan in the style of acoustic Spanish guitars and judging from his totally cool demeanor many other instruments and many other wood works.
My hat IS OFF to Jonnyy Kinkaed. Well done indeed.

I find myself here watching all 5 videos because I was considering building a Stew Mac kit guitar! Even as a finish/ trim Carpenter I am very doubtful I have the skill/ patience to go through with it! I’ve done many arduous tasks over the years including fish taxidermy and woodwork, but I don’t think there is any finer craft than instrument building! Awesome!!! Wish I had a guy like that around me to learn from. Guitar sounds great Dan. One of a kind! 💯. Kudos Johnny! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
