    Good review Shane! 45 megapixels in my opinion is extreme overkill for wedding photography. Our main camera bodies for years was the Nikon D700 and D3s, both 12 megapixels. We never had a client that wanted or requested a print that was too large for a 12mp file, including 30x40. The reason to upgrade to this camera is the 2 card slots or if you are someone who shoots video.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  4 роки тому

      Thanks Jason! The two card slots will be amazing! Just in the last two weeks I had a client ask to do some extreme cropping. And on another occasion, I walked into a client's house a saw a giant print I had taken over their fire place and three more large prints on their adjacent wall, so I don't know that 45 megapixel will be overkill for me. And even it is, half the fun for me as a photographer is zooming in and looking at the files while I am editing them :) The D700 was a great camera!

    This exact question has been bothering me so much. I’ve been debating the two bodies for the past few weeks. I feel like if you are really have to debate with your self as to why you don’t need the R5, you probably need the R5. The cropping aspect is what really has me coming back to the R5.

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  3 роки тому +2

      Right?! And even after you make the call the decision will still mess with you some. If you can rent/borrow both and compare images that might be helpful. If you have the money, the R5 will not disappoint. After a year, I still LOVE it. But the R6 is nearly as good and will give you more money for those incredible RF lenses. Decisions, decisions...

      @@ShaneLongPhotography it’s funny that you bring up the money saving for some sweet RF glass. That’s one of the reasons why I consider the R6. In Canada the difference between the two camera bodies is $2000. Then you factor in the extra costs for a couple CFExpress cards and our insane sales tax, you are looking at just under a $3000 dollar difference between the two cameras. I’m likely just going to go for the R6. I’ve been doing family, maternity and couples shoots for the past year(The pandemic has made this interesting with all our lockdowns...). The R6 should be fine for this. I also will be shooting a few Micro weddings this summer, and once again the R6 should be more than enough. My thought is that if I run into an issue where I’m needing more, it will likely mean I am getting more/bigger clients. At that point, an upgrade to the R5 or something else might be worth it, and using the R6 as a backup instead of the RP will be even better.

      Hey Chris! Low light is super important! The R5 has been better in low light than my 5D4 which was more than good enough for me. So that wasn't a priority for me. But to some I am sure it is. All the best!

      In my opinion Canon R5 has better sensor than R6. You can compare side by side editing in Lr or C1 both cameras. Personally - shadows recovering better in R5 without colors destruction.

    HI Shane, Thanks for theses videos! Wanted to ask your opinion- I am a relatively new business owner shooting weddings, proposals and families with a 5D Mark IV- Ive invested in the 24-70 & the 70-200 2.8 and planning to get a lense for macro work ( love a suggestion on that one!) I need a backup camera and I original had planned to go with a 2nd 5D Mark Iv but that seems impractical now based on what I have seen. I frequently crop the way you do in your video above and I will continue to be offering prints to my clients (many of whom want o print large format). In my perfect scenario, I will be creating work that is similar in color & tone, and sharpness to the work that you do (LOVE YOUR WORK!!!!) I am not in the luxury market, but I am older and our family has an established income that would allow for a higher priced camera set up (as long as it made sense in the long run). I have recently invested in flash equipment and plan to incorporate that into my sessions on a regular basis. Can you advise on the best set up based on what I have outlined?

      Hello Stacy! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from UA-cam as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. You probably have already made your decision, but I think you are wise to move to the newer generation of cameras. If you crop a lot, I would get the R5. It is amazing for that! If you crop some and want to save some money, the R is great too. Also look at some great prime lenses like the RF 50mm 1.2. That is my favorite lens of all. All the best!

Also curious if I were to purchase any R lense is the 50 the one you recommend first? It looks like your final preference is for horizontal composition. Perhaps over a period of time, you may initially compose horizontally. You will than have the dual advantage with R5. I purchased R6 after hearing your views for my needs are very much more modest. Thanks.

      You are going to love it! It is an amazing camera! I probably actually do more vertical compositions as I do a lot of portraits, but for the sake of UA-cam, I chose mostly horizontal photos so that it would fill the screen better :) Very observant of you! Thanks so much for watching!

    One of the biggest selling points for me was that I believe the R5 is more future proof than the R6. It already has more megapixels than I need so when the R5mk2 comes out it's going to have to have something amazing to get me to upgrade whereas just a jump in megapixels would be enough to have me wanting the R6mk2.

    I am on the same boat like you as I also crop a lot as I shoot birds/wildlife. How often do I get full frame of birds/wildlife? Almost down to zero because we can't get close to them. The only way to get a decent size image is cropping. 12 fps at 45 mp is huge for me. R5 is the way to go.

      You’ll never track or keep birds in focus like an A9ii can! No way....why? The sensor readout speed is less than 1/60s on the R5...on A9 you get a sensor readout at 1/160s with zero blackout. The 24mpx is plenty...no need for 45 or 61mpx. Also, high mpx will require higher shutter speeds all the time (like the A7riv so I got rid of it). Also A9 series performs 60 AF calculations per second...R5 will have EVF lag and blackout....for wildlife NO THANKS

    R5 with 35mm 1.8 (with potential to get better RF glass later) or R6 with 24-70 L 2.8? About the same price all together. Potentially want to do professional portrait work in the future but initially will use for hobby/family things. Hard decision. Thanks for the video Shane! Any concerns regarding switching to the CFexpress cards? I'm still shooting a 5D mkIII and have a ton of CF cards. I'm going to have to get a few more SD cards with the R6 or SEVERAL CFexpress cards. That's a ton of money on a format I'm not familiar with... Any concerns that it'll be around in 5 years?

    • @ShaneLongPhotography
      @ShaneLongPhotography  4 роки тому +2

      Good question! So far I really like the CFexpress. It is about the same size as an SD card and crazy fast! Though for me, just two SD cards would be preferred as it is fast enough for the rate at which I take photos, but I understand why they put in the CFexpress. I just gave away my CF cards when I sold my 5D Mark IV and purchased two 64gb CFexpress cards. I filled the first card in about 1/2 of a wedding day so I kind of wish I had bought 128gb, but they are so pricey. I will add more when time goes by and the price goes down on them. Hope that helps!

    An incredible camera overall by the sound of it. Just wondering though at this stage as to whether it is more a “Beta” or test model given that it reportedly overheats when in video mode. Surely Canon would have found that out during testing and one would hope that such an expensive model like the R5 would have had that issue fixed prior to release. Because they are lower end clients and they don't need high ress images. They don't need best quality images for their one of the most important day. Yeah, tell this to your clients. Great question! The R5 has been incredible for me in low light high ISO! It focuses better when I photograph the wedding dances than my 5D MKIV ever did. It can even face detect people dancing!!! I cover it a little in my full R5 Review.ua-cam.com/video/l8izgCPnrHc/v-deo.html Hope that helps!

    If you buy into all the UA-cam/Sony Ambassador hype (like Gerald Undone) you should buy a Sony A7SIII and happily hand your clients 12 MP photos! LOL.
