How could this “Top 10” list of Miami Vice episodes not have “Out Where the Buses Don’t Run” on it. That was BY FAR the best episode in the series and the final scene was the best scene in the entire series.

"Out Where The Buses Don't Run" clearly went beyond anything that the writers hoped to attain with this show...simply the highpoint of this series and the genius of all actors involved. The fact that it's not mentioned here is nothing more than a matter of taste...

The final scene, showing Sonny and Rico driving through the streets of Miami at night in the vintage black Ferrari Daytona convertible, the fantastic Dire Straights song “Brothers in Arms” and the discovery of Tony Arcaro’s decomposing corpse behind the wall was awesome and so well done. Those are the two very best episodes. The "Brothers in Arms" scene was epic, and even the lyrics fit the moments. The story of a brilliant but crazy(?) burnt-out ex-cop was exceptionally well done.

I purchased the complete series on DVD about 2 years ago and only now do I really enjoy this masterpiece of iconic tv lore. I noticed that Evan was not on your list if any other one deserved to be in it it is definitely that one. But all in all I mostly agree with your ranking although I would've put the pilot in the number one slot because as you've said it yourself "it set the tone of the entire series". I do believe however that there will never ever be a better cop show than Miami Vice. To my chagrin I was more than perplexed by the Miami Vice movie Michael Mann released in 2006; what a slap in the face to all the fans alive at the time...

You are right about the weak points especially the sports episodes. Their are at least two strong episodes centered on the supporting cast though. The Golden Triangle Parts 1 and 2 for Lt. Castillo, Bushido and Dutch Oven for Trudy.

I was in my mid 20's when Vice came out and this was THE best police drama then and now. Personally, I was surprised when Sheena Easton was chosen as to appear on the show and become Crockett's wife because, while she was still a relevant singer at the time, she was definitely past her heyday. One of my favorite episodes was 'EVAN', and while 'MISSING HOURS' stands out as probably the worst, 'MIRACLE MAN' is right up there with it. This show had its footing from the very beginning and was the best it would be from the start.

This was my favorite show of the 1980s! Friday night was my night for the TV in our house. OMG the Sheena Easton episodes were the worst, and speaking from a female point of view (who also had the hots for Sonny Crockett), I was not the least bit upset when she was killed off. Even her dying scene was bad! Great selection of episodes, though. I was surprised not to see Calderone's Return or Evan on the list. Down For The Count parts 1 and 2 are close to my heart, as Switek and Zito were almost like the vice's comedy team; Sons and Lovers is a big fave, too, seeing how Calderone's son was willing to kill his sister and nephew just to get revenge on Tubbs. She was quite the bit of hotness, but even when those episodes first aired (and I did see them), everybody recognized her character probably wouldn't last long. Mrs. Crockett pretty much epitomized the notion of "fridging" -- torturing or killing off a minor character (frequently female) for no other reason than to drive the character development of a main character (usually male).

I was working in TV news when MV was a current show. Several of us at the station were glued to monitors and didn't get much work done when it aired. I have so many favorites, mostly from season 1 & 2. Season 3 saw the first changes in the show and I have a few of favorites from it, season 4 had more changes including an attempt at humor (Cows Of October), and season 5 was a waste of time and film. I have season 1 thru 4 on DVD but don't even want season 5. Others who have commented here have already mentioned a number of episodes on my list, and I include "Duty And Honor", "Shadow In The Dark", "Killshot" (the only one with a story surrounding a sport that worked IMO), and "Walk Alone". "By Hooker By Crook" was interesting because we got to see Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson act (and play in bed) together since they were actually married in real life. Season 2 had "Back In The World" and the follow up "Stone's War" from season 3 with Bob Balaban and G. Gordon Liddy as adversaries. All of my favorites have at least one Jan Hammer music track that I love. The bust at the beginning of "Theresa" is a good example: fast and intense. Season 2 finale "Sons And Lovers" has another Jam Hammer track I could listen to forever (also used in the opening scene of season 1 "The Home Invaders"). So much fantastic music there's too much to list.

Your top-10 definitely wouldn't resemble mine. "Amen...Send Money" was absolutely atrocious as just one example, and "Viking Bikers from Hell" has no place on a "Miami Vice" top-10 list. And "Out Where The Buses Don't Run" was almost universally acclaimed as one of the best episodes of any network TV series so for it to get just a cameo mention at the end definitely puts you out of the mainstream. A couple of the ones you panned were pretty strong too in my opinion, including "The Good Collar" and "Hard Knocks". Some of my personal favorites in addition to "Prodigal Son", "Smuggler's Blues", and "El Viejo" on your list, would include "Milk Run", "Rites of Passage", "The Maze", "Lombard", "Buddies", "Yankee Dollar", "Sons and Lovers", "Baby Blues", "Forgive Us Our Debts", "Red Tape", "Contempt of Court", and "Baseballs of Death".

Mark - Amen is MY all-time WORST episode too! I think it was a conscious effort to 'de-violence' Miami Vice. MOST of the series III (?) episodes were a bit tame. The so-called 'Moral Majority' are to blame for this OH! & I bet Stones War made Regan CRINGE...

I heard on Power 96 this morning that Don Johnson said a hard maybe to bringing back Miami Vice.

For me the coolest part was that when they played a contemporary popular song they could play the version with the original artists. Most shows at that time always played a cover of whatever song. It hit me when an episode started with ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man". I must have been in middle school. And everyone thought my dad looked like Castillo.

Nice retrospective but... nothing after season 3 should even be mentioned.,with S 2 the pinnacle . Glades and Whatever Works are great dark horse episodes.
