  • Many people want to open a pumpkin patch for fun and profits. We talk to the owner of “The Patch” in Woodland Washington on how to run a successful pumpkin patch for agritourism. “The Patch has had over 50 thousand guests in each of its last two years. Matt gives us 7 points to consider when running a patch as well as the first three pumpkins he would plant if he were limited. Those pumpkins are the F1 fireball carving pumpkin and two white pumpkins. One large and one small ‪@FlanaganHomestead‬ #thepatch.

      The pumpkins in our school patch were amazing. We gave them away to teachers and friends. Next year we plan to have a stand in front of the school to sell them and tomatoes etc to raise money for the program.

      @@FlanaganHomestead I'm in charlotte, NC, with red clay soil full sun and access to irrigation water. I'm going to apply for a $5000 grant. Any recommendations for amending the soil? I was thinking of getting leaf compost $15/yd and composted horse manure $15/yd also. making a row and then rotatilling it into the ground? Then I'd use black woven landscaping fabric between the rows to keep weeds down. was hoping to make $$$ for the school PTA and any left overs we can give to the kids/teachers.

      @@southbridgeforestHOA any organic matter will help. Make sure it is aged manure or put down and worked in well in advance. If you don’t want to incorporate it into as much soil we used to do mound planting (about 4 plants on one spot allowed to spread away from each other. Have recently changed to row planting.

    Very good, informative video. Thank you! How many seeds per acre do you plant on average?

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  2 роки тому

      That’s complicated. If there are no roads for driving and no spacing of different types of pumpkins to avoid crop loss then it would look kind of like this. Rows 6 to 8 feet apart. Depending on variety seeds a foot to two feet apart. Puts us on average about 4000 seeds per acre. (Rough estimate number)

      Ok, thanks! We had small success this year with blue doll, cinderella and red warty thing pumpkins. Next year we are going to try between an acre and an acre and a half with more varieties. I had figured between 3500 to 4000 plants per acre based on our small scale garden we did.

      @@danielmartin6228 sounds like you are on the right path. Hope it all works out well for you. Remember it is farming so not everything is going to workout exactly the way you want it. It might be heat, cold, bugs etc that present a problem but you can give over those hurdles and still have success

    Do you use a planter or hand plant your pumpkins?

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  Рік тому +1

      The last few years a planter has been used. Up until then it was hand planting.
