Passenger Trains in Costa Rica 2018 - Transporte Ferroviario en Costa Rica

- The rail system in Costa Rica is slowly coming back after being out of service since the 1990s as certain lines are being made suitable for rail service. Notice the lack of crossing guard gates at the intersections. Speaking to a number of locals: they say that accidents involving cars with the train occur but express pride that rail is coming back.
-
Currently the service operates from two main terminals which are the old Atlantic and Pacific stations located in San José Downtown, around 3 kilometres (2 mi) from each other. Incofer has bought many Apolo 2400 series railcars from the former narrow gauge operator in Spain, FEVE. Those cars are used in the commuter train service with complementary operations of so-called "conventional trains" (old General Electric diesel locomotives pulling old passenger cars built in Costa Rica).

A critical issue is that there are no barriers or lights at level crossings, only a warning sign at every one of the many grade crossings. Train airhorns are used to warn pedestrians and cars at every grade crossing of an incoming train. This is in order to prevent accidents, which have been registered, but due to the train's low speeds, they result in non-fatal accidents. There have been, as well, registered complaints about the train's loud horns (same air horns used in freight trains in other countries), but they have been overruled due to the necessity to warn traffic and pedestrians. Also many Costa Ricans feel identified with the train horns since they have been used ever since the railroad started operations. ~Wikipedia

Thank you for your support. Comment below so all of us can have a productive and insightful conversation about transportation!
Trains and Costa Rica, two things I love.
I think I rode the white articulated train about 10 years ago. I was in town and asked about it and was told it was departing at 2pm or something. I remember it went a few miles out of town, then turned around and went back. It was a trial, or even maybe a tourist train. I wasn’t sure and my Spanish is very very poor so I couldn’t ask. I remember when I was riding the train, it tried to climb a pretty steep hill and didn’t have enough power. We slowed down and finally stopped even with the engine working hard. We reversed a bit and tried the hill “with a running start” and made it up! Very strange!
Incofer has slowly but steadily been rebuilding the railway system in Costa Rica. What you rode about ten years ago would have been the initial starter segment, which was kind of a succesful trial. There is some freight business again also.
Pretty unique trains thanks for sharing this.
Another great video; thank you! I lived in Costa Rica in the early 60s and remember taking the train to the Caribbean lowlands with my family. My sister was sitting on a box and it turned out that it contained a crocodile! I hope that this beautiful country continues to develop and expand the rail system.
same here somewhere in the PACIFIC OCEAN Philippine Islands therefore our gifts are EQUAL only CLIMATE CHANGE the SPECIFICATION and the EQUATION greater than>symbol

Great stuff. Thanks for posting. It is always very interesting to see trains in countries around the world.
Those DMUs/Diesel Multiple Units are Diesel-Electric, not very common transmission for modern Diesel units and more on meter and narrow gauges in general.
Trains were designed and built in the Eighties here in Barcelona by MTM-La Maquinista Terrestre i Marítima, one of many historical European rail manufacturers integrated later into Alstom.
In Northern Spain FEVE lines (now defunct and part of RENFE) are known by railwaymen and users "Apolos", the same than Lunar Rockets and Capsules, due to modern lines and internal equipments for the time, although in normal service since they are not particularly appreciated, because for many time were not very reliable.
German trains the best 👍
Still not reliable. They are steaming piles of shit.
was on a cruise in april 2018 to costa rica, got a chance to ride through the rain forest on a train there, i also used the new solar powered streetcar system in aruba!
I rode the isolated system on the Carribean coast based on Limon in 2007. It was cut off from the capital by an earthquake but was still in use for freight trains carrying bananas to a port just north of Limon. There are workshops there. The passenger service was in conjunction with cruise ships and went a few Kilometres north of Limon to a banana plantation. I was allowed to walk round the workshops and take photos. Thanks for the video it has brought back some good memories.
That’s crazy at 3:42!! The guy must be helping to couple the train in the yard or something. One missed step and he’s a goner!
If I remember correctly he was jumping off to change the track switch.
@@timosha21 it's too risky for him to do that way, if he slip down on front of the railbus he wouldn't get any little opportunity to live.
Muy bien video de trenes de Costarica! :)
The two-coach DMU comes from Spain!! Glad they're still running!!
Is this the line that just got the new Chinese rolling stock?
Wow i like trains in Costa Rica megusta trennes en Kosta Rika
Great video!
Man love these locomotives.
Cool video Tim! I love your videos
thank you!
well, we got new DMU'S and repaired infrastructure nowdays! im happy to see rail transit coming back
They need to modernize the system for safety reasons.
Thinking of heading down there to ride this myself! Did you have any trouble with conductors/police when it came to filming, or did they allow it?
im a local, I've been filming trains for over 10 years and I haven't had any trouble
