Cold Steel Voyagers: "Preparedness Blades" by Nutnfancy

  • I was not enthusiastic to hear that the lightweight and fast pre-2010 models of Cold Steel Voyagers getting re-designed. They have been favorite blades here in TNP, integrating easily into all preparedness systems. Luckily they're even better than before and I was happy to be wrong. In this review, I show all three of these newer Voyager models in depth: the XL, L, and Medium
(plain edged clips, my favorite ones). After hard cutting and some batoning with the Large Voyager, I was not surprised to find still a solid locking knife. The Demko Triad lock is a winner again and it solidly places these Zytel handled folders in the hard use category. The stop pins on these models are large and solid in this lock design, taking the mechanical shock instead of the locking bart. The lockback spring is perfectly balanced and allows for some rather fast deployments, surpising for lockbacks sometimes. The cylindrical thumbstuds are another improvement as well, offering easy and fast access left or right. The full flat ground blades arrive sharp and the clip blade shape has great belly, a good tip, and a preferred stone washed finish. In cardboard cutting the AUS8A steel dulled but retained a usable edge (shown). The handles now feature a higher traction pattern, 6061 heat treated aluminum liners, and deep finger guards. They are are secure in hand and comfortable. Sadly jimping is still lacking in these redesigns but traction is still pretty good. A large lanyard hole makes attaching a 550 cord lanyard easy (medium version lacks it however). The pocket clip is standard Cold Steel: it holds tight, it's strong, and a left hand version is included. You will have to do some sanding or epoxying under the clip to minimize pocket shredding. Value is tremendous in all the Voyager models, made possible by overseas production. In 2011, the XL clip model sold for $48, an amazing value for a knife with the capabilities of the higher end Cold Steel Large Espada. It is rare you will find blades this well made and this tough at these prices. That alone makes them TNP Hall of Famers. Although sporting the aluminum liners, happily the Voyagers feature reasonable weights for their size and the strength they seem to possess. So while we've seem to have lost the ulra-lightweight Voyagers of days past, a stronger, higher grip version takes its place. As last ditch fighters or utility blades, these Voyagers integrate well into EDC, military, LE, and survival systems.///////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9.5 out of 10////////////There's some great knife shops online, here's one that sells cheap: www.notjustknives.com

I have a half serrated Voyager I bought new in 2002 and I still love it. It was my first Cold Steel product and it was THE sharpest out-of-the-box knife I've ever owned - absolutely *razor sharp*. A couple years ago I sent it back to Cold Steel to have them resharpen it because I was so impressed with how ultra-sharp it was when I bought it. They offer this service for $7 but I was seriously disappointed with its sharpness when I received it back, as it was nothing like it was when new, and I could have done as good a job as they did. Needless to say it's the last time I'll have them sharpen anything - complete waste of time. They make fantastic knives but they clearly fell vastly short when it came to resharpening. Their knives are top quality though :)

NUTNFANCY!!! Thanks for another awesome Cold Steel knife video! I have been a huge fan of CS since high school in the mid '90s and have collected and used many of their knives/products over the years. I was a little weary of the redesign since I have long loved the Voyager series. When I went into my local gun shop the guy there just talked crap about the new design, materials, construction, etc. Thanks to you now I have the facts and will be happy to add more to my collection. This weekend I spent about three hours cutting, scraping, digging, and chiseling out old grout and caulking in a shower with my medium voyager. I was even using the edge for prying, and the knife held up amazingly. Apart from dulling the cutting edge (which was reversed in about 20 seconds of work with a whetstone), there was a tiny bit of side-to-side movement in the blade, but tightening the pivot screw fixed that easily.
These knives are freakin' beasts. Highly recommended.

Plus some of these Voyagers have plastic pocket clips vs. the metal pocket clips on yours. The Voyagers with the plastic pocket clips don't have any steel liners in them just plastic. So are the ones without any kind of liner with the plastic pocket clips made in Japan the older versions or newer versions?

Great Video! I have two cold steel voyagers - a medium half serrated tanto point(pocket clip snagged on something and bent the crap out of it) and a large clip point fully serrated that I gave to my little brother. Also had an older medium clip point with the plastic belt clip that got loss while doing yardwork. I like the medium size and will save up to get it. Keep up the great work!

I got a large voyager yesterday and its an awesome blade except the pocket clip is terrible. It was so stiff I couldn't get it to clip onto my pocket. I had to bend it out then shave down the texture on the grip smooth just to be able to use it. Please Lynn Thompson improve the clip on what otherwise is a great blade.

I was really skeptical when I first saw the re-design myself, because I've been using an old style medium voyager in my EDC system for the past 2 years now and I didn't think I'd want the blade to be any different... I was TOTALLY wrong. I just got my medium voyager in the mail the other day... wow, LOVE this blade! I loved the old style, but now to have a more rugged/hard-use version of it is just awesome. My next purchase is gonna have to be the XL for sure.

@nutnfancy, In CA it is almost impossible to get a CCW but folding knives are legal for carry. My question is, is it enough to just buy and carry a knife like the Cold Steel Voyager large as a defensive tool? Or do you need to take classes and become thoroughly familiar with defensive techniques before it would actually help you? A lot of people tell me that having a knife for defense is more dangerous to you if you don't know how to fight with it.

After watching this, I bought a Voyager XL to keep in my backpack as a backup survival blade. I always have a Rtak II, ESEE 6 or CS Trailmaster on hikes, but I believe in backups, and the Voyager is very light for its size and super strong. I tested it out by batoning thru some hard, dry spruce logs, and it worked better than ANY folding knife has a right to. No blade play afterwards, decent edge left. Less than 8 oz and under $50? That is a bargain that I think all hikers should have.

I knew it would be too big and heavy for routine EDC, so I decided to get the PE tanto for self defense carry. Wow, is it ever strong and durable! It is built more like a craftsman wrench than a knife.
I ordered the med PE clipoint also. It is going to make a great every day user! Thanks.

I guess I'll be "that guy." Totally bent the tip on my XL Voyager. I was actually stabbing through some ice and bent it. Still works great, absolutely love this blade. An awesome value for around 50$.

I have several of their blades including the Medium Clip Point Voyager Nutn showed in the vid (one of my EDC blades), a Leatherneck SF, and a Finn Bear (which I use for skinning & gutting deer) and they are all excellent. I believe that CS makes very good quality, tough and well designed knives that are meant for serious use. I plan to buy an SRK, Recon Scout and Trailmaster too. I say find one in their line that suits your needs and get it, you won't be disappointed!
