Cool to see someone reacting to other songs than the most famous ones. This group has a lot of great songs that are not necessarily mainstream or known. I discovered them in January this year and have been a fan and follower ever since. I was first impressed by how eclectic, charismatic, fun, and deep their music is (and how awesome their dancing and choreography are).

The song about schools teacher/student relationships is Koi Geba and is a great song and powerful video. I think you would enjoy their 1st mv, Dokubana, a favorite from their 1st album.

They are indeed amazing live. I discovered their music a few months earlier, but seeing them live this June made me a fan. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. They also have a lot of confidence in their ability to perform and in the audience; during the first few gigs of their current world tour they performed several songs from an album that hadn't even been released at the time.
Have fun going down the AG! rabbit hole. The older songs (before 2021) usually don't have English subtitles, but don't let that stop you. There are some great songs on their first two albums.

Pineapple Kryptonite was produced by Money Mark, aka the 4th Beastie Boy, who they consider not only a mentor but like a grandfather. He spent months with them creating the EP "Snack Time" and has greatly influenced their musicality. Their choreo and lyrics have always been their own, even when they started 9 years ago between the ages of 13-15 years old. Btw, a lot of metalheads love them, including me.

I love that these four ladies create their own choreogtaphy for all their songs. That"s so cool! 🤩👏

Nice emotional support demon. I'm along for the Atarashii Gakko ride. Sometimes they do songs about striving for a better society, sometimes they do songs about getting sick on the schoolbus.

This song was custom written for them to perform as the theme song for a TV cop show. The show, called something like Assistant Detective Inspector Demon God is about a vigilante cop whose dedication to truth and justice is so pure and extreme that he engages in extrajudicial killing, paradoxically subverting his own ethics. I think it’s a testament to Atarashii Gakko’s abilities that they can pull off something like this and make it feel like their own product. It’s one of my favorites, but it’s not necessarily typical of their own themes, which tend to be more light hearted and positive, and it is not usually part of their concert repertoire.
They do their own choreography, which is likely the reason it’s so offbeat and unique. I’ve seen them twice live, and they put on a superb show. They give and receive enormous energy to the crowd, and no one goes home disappointed.

The title Maningen, by the way, is written in a way so it’s intentionally ambiguous. It can mean Righteous Person or Evil Person, reflecting the dilemma of the protagonist of the cop show it was written for. AG are fond of their artistic ambiguity, dualities and double meanings, which is part of what makes their best work playful and interesting.

You should check out the choreography video for Maningen. It's like you're watching dancing kanji characters. 😊

I interpret "Maningen" (human or humanity) as AG! asking why people aren't nicer to each other. The dance has a part where they mime typing on a keyboard so from that I think about trolls hiding behind an avatar on a computer (the irony of that is not lost on me) and spreading lies and negativity. FYI they form the Japanese characters for "manigen" at the end.
AG! have explicitly said they are not an idol group and I think that their quirky confidence comes from how, when and where they were formed. Mizyu, the oldest and shortest, has been dancing professionally for a long time and learned the ropes as a backup dancer touring with Asobisystem's Kyary Pamyu Pamyu from age 11 to 15. The others have also been singing and dancing from an early age and I think Asobisystem had an idea to form an idol group around Mizyu and chose Rin, Suzuka and Kanon to join her. Very early on they dressed in some garish teenage idol type costumes, but they seem to have quite quickly adopted the school uniforms. They were paired with a jazz musician, H Zett Rio, and another Asobisystems musician called Yonkey to produce their first music. Asobisystem are a small agency and don't have much in house to develop artists so I think AG! were left alone to "get on with it" and at times they had very little funding and were handing out flyers to get people to come to their concerts. They do all the choreography and seem to be in charge of their concerts and staging and are now getting credit for lyrics on their songs. So they are really driving the artistic content.
