- In this video, I try to answer - Who is the best super Smash Bros. character to start out with? Using data, statistics, and personal experience I find out if Fox, Falco, Jigglypuff, Marth, or someone else is the best character for beginners.
Video link sources to be added shortly.
I host a beginner-friendly smash event every Tuesday at 7/6c. For more info: start.gg/onlyn...

Only Kadence would host a 6 hour weekly melee tournament for 2+ years straight without skipping a day just to collect data for a UA-cam vid
See the missing factor you forgot is that all the foxes winning actually started 5+ years ago
All the players winning started 5+ years ago
@@orangesaregood1568 and they happen to play fox!!! Case closed!
My face when I pushed the Luigi numbers because I just couldn't close
oh hey it’s ME
Kadence using computers and magic to uncover the truth!!!
I started playing today, I chose fox because I want to develop my fundamentals before I move on to other characters. This video is something I have been thinking about alot so its cool to see someone making it
Edit: I lied I play DK and I love him
i objectively think that Fox and Mario should your first characters as a noob in melee because Fox Forces you to learn how to play more consistantly and forces faster reaction time. While Mario gives you the basic game functions of play and is very easy to start implimenting Tech such as L-Cancle, Z-Cancle, Power Shield, WaveDash, Wall Kick and about character limitations. Third pick should be Kirby because learning a low tier when starting out will give you the ideas of how to manage trades, how to be safe on shield and how to gauge neutral in a more proactive way as well as learn more indepth ideas, how to more effectively find kill options and conscepts on the multi-layered defense mechanics of Melee
i really like this take!
Idk. Learning Mario sounds like a good idea when starting out bcs as you said he is good for learning the game, but I feel like fox, though it’s great if you vibe with the character and you like them, to someone who hates everyone in melee and just wants to play the game, I wouldn’t recommend fox. I feel like though he is pretty good at learning some stuff, I feel like he might stop some ppl from developing and improving since he has such good answers to everything. Kirby is a weirdo idk. Pika also seems pretty good for learning the game, as they don’t have any over centralizing mechanics and they force you to play the game
This video is amazing. Really well done in terms of the initial premise, finding the answers in an objective and reasonable way, and great presentation.
not my homie lilbucket getting kirby'd LMAO
Thumbnail and intro to this video are GOATED
really love this video!! to think about this more practically like you briefly mentioned in your video, characters like marth and sheik are probably the best characters to start out with (given you enjoy playing them) because they have a relatively low APM and with sheik especially you don't have to L canceling everything, simple combos and she teaches mechanics like how to properly use wavedash, dash back and how to effectively react to DI cuz they are necessary for sheik to function at any competitive environment at any level
Real answer: just have fun bro, it takes months usually to start getting good at the game so you wanna have fun
I like Yoshi, I've been practicing offline and really enjoy playing them
5:49 I think the reason pikachu is so unpopular (really only 3 of them), is because of how stubby his range is with weaker normals besides smash attacks and most of his up air stuff being hard to wrap your head around. He’s also just a hard character to pick up so why would you do that to yourself and play a hard character…
Don’t ask who I play
This video is great! I love how DK and Yoshi have been killing it lately. I also saw that a Kirby just won your Only Noobs recent tournament, is there any videos from that? I got beat up really bad by a Sheik and I saw that Kirby won to that Sheik. I definitely wanna see that if possible.
feeling generous :) ua-cam.com/video/BI3dC4aPslU/v-deo.html
kadence and mekk have made me decide i’m going to win onlynoobs tmrw
great video!
You don't have to pick just one. I've figured out a lot by learning how to play as the characters I struggle against.
pika main here, i actually started the game off maining marth and sheik since they taught me fundies and i swapped over to pika when i could take full advantage of his specific techs and playstyle.
i wouldn't recommend pika to noobs cus he's unintuitive imo, but like you said, what's the most important is just to have fun :D but pika is def very unforgiving to learn at lower lvs (e.g bad range, his movement can feel janky without proper tech skill, his moves don't do much damage or hit hard outside of upsmash, etc)
First character you should pick is the character that feels the most natural to you for me it was Puff but over time I changed to Shiek
Wait, this only has FIVE HUNDRED VIEWS???
So this is what ON has been for the whole time...
I always felt like the answer changed the further up you go. My experience with starting is still fresh in my mind and ive finally gotten good enough to see why fox is a broken lil dummy so im less biased than i used to be. At the level where none of you are lcanceling, fox falco and falcon kill themsleves after badically going off stage ever (it felt like i had to simply learn how to not die when my feet left the stage) and fox and falco offer not as much paydirt at that level. For fox, all of his pros are locked behind a skill wall and his best moves dont seem so amazing. When i started out i felt that my only real move was upsmash because at least it could kill. All of foxs other moves are primarily combo or techskill oriented and they still require a knowledge of how to pilot rhe character/ how the game works a little. If you started 2 people out, one fox and one peach, and you told the fox to upsmash and the peach to downsmash, its really hard to see a case for the day 1 fox even being able to like actually threated them with damage.
I still agree that fox is best to start with because once you do get past the sea of marth fsmash and peach dsmash the character is suddenly oppened up and congrats you get to play the game.
I just had to rep the early days of me getting ruined by my friend falcon kicking me from accross the stage, only to have us both die cuz we didnt jump quickyl enough haha
hi! just wanted to said that i really enjoyed reading your comment and agree with p much everything you just said :)
Marth probably struggles because it can be hard to kill at a lower level with no pivot fsmash. For my money sheik is the best since she has very consistent kills with little practice needed
I think if this is true for you at low level you're not edgeguarding and holding center stage properly. Marth is pretty good at finding one of his tilts at high percents and bullying the defender while they try to get off the ledge or down in a juggle situation. It's all about patience and believing in your ability to rinse and repeat, although of course I agree it's a weak situation for marth compared to other top tiers.
Nice I was right
Fox's free
Next find the Only noobs GOAT
Damn how do you feel about the current mekk drama
i lovew donkey kong and mr game and watch
You're absolutely right, I have a lot of fun playing Zelda (not Sheik) because people just don't have any idea what she does besides kicking lol!
Don't be another boring Spacie main from the bunch just because they feel like a obvious option, if you enjoy any other character, even from the low tiers, *play it*
i'm a little confused on the underrated / overrated chart. why does it seem like you recommended all the characters that "underperform" like falco?
I've always held the opinion that Pikachu is one of the hardest characters to play:
Low range on grab makes dealing with shield difficult
Low range on aerials means you can only win neutral at range 0
High commitment approaches due to poor aerial mobility
The basic neutral option to safely cover space for every other character is a retreating aerial, and Pikachu's retreating aerials are terrible.
The character has a ton of potential, but your spacing has to be impeccable in order to play neutral well.
LUIGI FOREVER. 20LL babbbby
