Loved the detail of this review! My mom has this laptop (the exact config shown with the 560X, i7-8750H, 16GB, and 512GB SSD) but got an M3 Air (24GB/1TB 15”) and is giving this to my brother. I’m going to help him setup and configure it (he’s 11yo) and I just wanted to know what using one is like in 2024.

03:55 You can activate a "dumbed-down" mode for the touchbar that makes it act just like function keys would.
05:40 Funnily enough, it was actually Apple's strange decision to make the display flex cable smaller that resulted in it breaking and maybe working in weird angles. One of the oddest gates from Apple, IMO.
06:58 It is BIZARRE how much FCPX is optimized to run on anything. I've never seen a mac not run FCPX at some relatively good capacity.
08:29 OCLP! Especially since this mac is very native

I would rather get the 15" 2019 model. (Not the 16", 15". They sold it for a few months). You can get one maxed out in near perfect condition for 1K USD. CPU increases from 8th to 9th gen and cooling is also improved. (You also get an extra year of OS updates too!)

These are substantially cheaper on eBay (I just inherited and sold one there myself.. though I think it was not quite the same model though still 2018.. there must have been a refresh that year), although buying this machine is just putting yourself on the upgrade treadmill. I got an M2 Macbook Pro around the same time and it makes the 2018 pro model seem like an old 'Air' model in comparison. I would strongly recommend a slightly more expensive used M1 Macbook Air over this 6 year old Pro model from what might be one of the worst periods of Apple hardware (the terrible and surprisingly low-res touch bar, the keyboard that was designed for slimness rather than typing, mediocre screen by Apple standards, ageing battery, no mag safe on the one I sold, and at the very end of its software support).

Would recommend to someone that has a similar budget, (this laptop was once $2k-$3k and its definitely not worth that, however under $700, still very good agaisnt any new laptop in this price range.

If your a heavy video editor I don't exactly know just because I have basic video editing skills, but for 1080p its going to be just fine. If you can afford a M1 Macbook Air or pro with 16gb of ram that would be the way to go just to be safe. As for getting premiere pro for free or as a one time payment I don't unfortunately know.

Bro I wanna buy 2018 MacBook Pro 15inch, 1 Terra byte, 16 GB RAM, 2.6GHz Intel Core i7. I want to use it this 2024, because I’m a graduate student. Does it worth buying? 🙏

I would highly advise to avoid this laptop, I had the 2018 Pro 15in (1TB 32GB RAM 3.2GHz i9) and it suffers from well documented cooling issues.
Grab an M series MacBook instead, even a mid-range M series MacBook Air will outperform the 2018 Pro.
