The teenage stage is so much harder because you think you were 'there' after all this time training their puppy, and now it's like your dog is just flipping you off... Hormones, and a much stronger dog, plus a tired owner who thought the puppy phase was the toughest makes that this is the stage where people give up. Thank you so much for this video.

I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

This is exactly were we are at with our doberman. He is a great dog and even he is a pain in the back at this point and it's exactly as described it seems all his training is gone. The biggest challenge yet is other people out there who constantly try to interfere or judge when we are training. Or try to pet him and encourage things we don't want like jumping. Even it says in the dog in big red letters " in training do not touch do not distract"

I needed that pep talk today as I have a very strong willed but very well behaved 1 year and 2 months old Rhodesian Ridgeback and he’s definitely going through that phase lately! It’s really hard to stay calm at times when he’s pretending to not understand or hear me… I’m a feisty French Canadian and when he’s defiant, it’s hard to remain patient! Lol!! I just have to keep up the daily training and remember that this phase will pass!! So thx again for the pep talk/reminder!! 🙏❤️😉

That's what I'm planning on doing. Got a rescue in the summer - abandoned pup wr found on our holidays. Spent a few weeks with us on holiday and we brought her back to the UK at the end of August (Greece to France flight in cabin then 6 hour drive from Paris to London). She was we think about 10 or 11 weeks when we found her so couldn't work on the puppy stage on a Greek island! Obviiously we did the best we could, but couldnt take her out of our villa much to the island dealing with a low level parvo outbreak. We worked on socialisation etc when we got her home (she goes with a dog walker 3 ish times a week with the same group of dogs, the other times she's come to my uni campus and my mum's taken her for long walks in nearby Richmond Park when I'm in lectures.
We've been trying to organise a trainer, which we organises about a month after we brought her home, but there were some commitment clashes and things (his wife had a medical emergency and was an hour or 2 away from dying so that really impacted our sessions, plus the holiday season) so we're officially starting proper training next week. My trainer's a Canine behaviourist and is helping me train her to be an assistance dog

Yup. Very much yes. I have a hunting lab/show Golden mix, as a service dog in training and he's 14 months now. Just started puberty. He's extremely high drive (which I wanted, not only for his service dog career but also because I do lots of dog sport with him.) He has three major issues with his hormones, but overall his obedience is stellar, he's incredibly calm on the job and an absolute havock during free time. He leaves almost every GSD or Hova in our club in his shadow when it comes to drive, speed and perfomance. In his freetime he's very hectic on walks atm, very socially and sexually motivated, constantly in a rush, BUT obviously trying to be focused and obedient and follows every command. His self-control is amazing and I know when to use management to make his life easier.

Good to hear this encouraging post. I have two male intact 11 month old mastiffs
Mom half bullmastiff half English mastiff and the dad pure English mastiff
They went bonkers the last couple weeks especially the one who seems to be showing more dominance
Hormones out of control and doing things they never did. The one is trying to mount my daughters my son my wife and all our other dogs (we live on an acreage)
I got them to have more of a guardian breed for the property and family
The one is even showing what looks like aggression as the video said
When they are chill they are amazing and lovely liek they have been for the last ten months so I’m hoping they grow out of this band we can train them properly
I’m not looking for perfect as they don’t get a lot of outside exposure due to our location. But solid basic manners and control is mandatory

She was doing really well with recall and retrieving and suddenly she won't come back to me. She pinched a ball off another dog and it took me twenty minutes to get it back. Hello @willathertoncaninetraining and thank you so much for your videos. I have a black lab (I'm actually not sure if she's from a work or show line) that will be one year next week and since you work a lot with labs, it is easy to relate on some issues that you show on yourr videos. I haven't followed any course so far, because even through some difficulties, she is a brillant and very gentle dog that loves to learn, work and play.
My main issue at this point is that she absolutely loves to hunt, she's constantly smelling floor, in town, in forests, and so on. Obviously I don't let that habit to prevent a loose leash, but when I try to leave her off leash, she can easily be carried away from a smell and travel 200 - 300 meters without any worry. That resonates with the fact that they become "braver" but actually she was fearless since I got her at 2 months.
I think, from my perspective, that my main issue is that I lack of leadership towards her, she is very independant, but maybe a little too much and I would need to step up to be that leader for her.
But maybe, I should train her tracking skills to channel this habbit on some situations ? I would love to read about your opinions or if you would have any advice to give me.
Again thank you for your time and keep up the great work ♥

He will growl and as soon as he's done it, he will lay down with a sorry face. Breaks my heart seeing him battle these hormones. You can tell when he's really struggling, you can smell his privates. Since brought in another rottador as they are a beautiful rounded breed. Guardian, high working drive and loving. The key is to correct but also make up so as not to destroy the relationship or drive the behaviour.

Hi will, I adopted a dog a few months ago and your videos have helped alot to retrain him as he was 9 months old and was from an abusive home. The only issue I have now is that he tends to always be afraid to get leashed or be let out of the kennel or see me when I first get home. He always ends up peeing. Do you have any tips to help him stop this?

Do you have any advice on how to get my 1 yo German shepherd to engage with me more when she wants to herd our sheep. We don’t have a problem with her rounding them up (it’s actually quite helpful) but she often doesn’t recall to us when she gets in with them off lead

Any tips on stopping a dog begging for food?
I have a 2 year old cocker spaniel and he is crazed around food. We have never fed him off our plates/when we are eating and he is constantly begging for food. He gets sent to bed whenever we eat and is normally a very obedient dog, but as soon as the food comes out he starts misbehaving (sneaking out of bed and us having to put him back multiple times).
we moved on to shutting him in another room and he just wines at the closed door (again he never makes any noises or barks EXCEPT when there’s food) but that doesn’t stop the problem when out and about (eg walking past someone outside who has a packet of crisps)

I'm walking a local dog in his teenage phase once a week. He's a staffie, springer cross. He's great around other dogs off lead as long as they don't approach. Even if he was on the lead once they've approached, if they don't leave him alone he does become reactive. Is there a way I can get him to chill out, even if dogs push boundaries? I have seen this in other dogs before, where they're super patient with other dogs and would like to get him to the same place.

  • @mirawenya

How long does it last? I keep hearing different thing. Some say one and a half years, some a couple months. The overview for my breed said month 7-10 was challenge mode. But I have no idea what is accurate.
Also wondering if it’s possible mine went into it at 5,5 months. He started lifting his legs then, and is at times challenging, but think that’s just him not having learned something properly yet.
He’s 6,5 months now. Still nothing as bad as when he was 3-4 months.

Loki is having an issue when I put on a sweater or if someone other than me gets too close to a bone. Growling and head thrust. So far what I’ve done is to immediately place Loki on his side until muscles are soft, then I grab some treats and put on sweater. Hasn’t worked with bone. Help??

He stops listening completely. Even in the backyard he jumps on the fence so hard he has broken it. There are other dogs on the other side. He is back to pulling when walking even on a prong. He has even gotten away from my kids when they walk him and just play bows instead of listening to come back. Tips?

I have a 2 1/2 year old English greyhound who is generally very sweet, obedient and docile. Lately he has begun to challenge me with his size and also on the street will go after small dogs with a vengeance when previously he didn't have any issues. He's a big boy and his jumping, excessive zoomies and destructive behavior with his bedding and toys has gotten me very stressed. I usually try to calm him down with food/ treats but sometimes that is not enough. I know as a greyhound he will get through this, but how do I stop him from being a large adversary when he's feeling so brave and powerful in this stage?

Hi, can u tell me how to teach my 5 month old Frenchie to walk to heel as per your videos for a structured walk, where she checks in with me to lead her, without a slip lead? Frenchies are recommended to use harnesses because of the spinal issues they have. And I know this is true because we recently lost a beloved Frenchie to ivdd (a disk ruptured in her back).
I understand the slip lead helps u communicate better with the dog over a harness, but I just don't feel happy using it on my Frenchie. Need advice please🤗

I have a 5 month old Jack Russell with maybe just a hint of lurcher in her. I hope this guy will do a video on the small terrier type breeds. My dog has not been easy to train, I trained my previous dog a jack/staffie cross, but this one is good and then wild, she's OK with socialising, but anything else is just hit and miss, I know this breed can be difficult and I see progression, but honestly it's exasperating sometimes, it feels like 3 steps forward 2 steps backwards no matter how consistent I am. I'd better mention my husband let's her get away with everything maybe it's him I need to train. So frustrating, any tips would be appreciated.

    • @emsxbabe1982
      @emsxbabe1982 Рік тому +1

Everyone in the home must be on the same page when it comes to training. I have a Patterdale terrier who's just gone one year old so believe me, I understand the struggle! Also a very headstrong breed who's not the easiest to train but the first thing we agreed on when we got her was that we absolutely HAD to all be consistent in the training or we would end up with a nightmare. Similar issues arise when families let the kids do the walking but then don't understand why the dog still pulls on the leash even as an adult - because the kids aren't enforcing the training so the dog cannot possibly learn when there are different rules with different household members.

    • @susangarvey9415
      @susangarvey9415 Рік тому +1

@@emsxbabe1982 it's hard training a puppy and a full grown man at the same time. I think it's because we lost our other dog last year and he's forgotten the issues she came with when we first got her so he's trying to make up for our loss, this pup is very similar to her as well. I've told him he's got to appreciate that she was 12 years old and a puppy needs to learn to be well behaved for her own sake. I will get there somehow, some people get dogs, some of us get terriers which sometimes seem like a totally different species😳
