Secondly, I have tried filling large gaps as per your recommendation but have found that after I remove the excess adhesive with a blade, I am left with a matt surface which detracts from the normal surface of the surrounding glass. Is there any technique to stop this or a way to polish up afterwards?

Can you show the result on transparent glass? Totally healed or will the crack still be visible?
