Interesting video Tim. Our current small fleet consists of a Renault Grand Scenic (Diesel), Renault Kangoo (petrol) and my sans permis Mega Multitruck (diesel). As far as we are concerned up here in the Essonne, we've not considered going electric. However, when I bought my sans permis van second hand in 2018 van I rejected buying the electric versions also available on Le Bon Coin.
Most had some problem with them, hence an initial attractive purchase price. In the main, because the 12 battery cells needed changing. Quite a hefty cost, which would have made going down that route prohibative. So in my mind changing my diesel sans permis to electric would perhaps be an interesitng thing to do. In recent years this would've been difficult due to the rather tight rules concerning specifications and the limitations of the carte grise. But apparently since 2020, the French government have decided to relax the rules concerning retrofitting "thermic" vehicles with an electric motor and batteries. Which could be an attractive option to all.
    Bonne année à vous deux.

Thanks Tim, Intriguing news. €100/month lease deal with no down beats buying hands down, and at 3:48 the lovely old SAAB 900 Turbo was a quaint reminder of what "saving the planet" was nearly 50 years ago.
Your story gave me pause to reflect back to some numbers I shared with you last year about how of how EV's, (especially micro EV's such as Elton) and solar development have to benefit France domestically and globally, based on how little it would cost to France's million barrel a day transportation oil needs. I'll include some of it in case someone might be interested.
I may not be Mr. Macron's biggest fan, but if he is thinking along the lines below, and not just some socialist shell game as some allege, one has to ask "Why not?"
    From my correspondence:
"Tim... The reality of replacing 40 million cars in France with $60,000 EV's seems not a likely one, but as Elton costs only about 10% to a Tesla to build and purchase, and requires 1/3 the energy of a Tesla, using a Light EV like Elton or Mr. Boo's scooter for most of the average daily commute and convenience runs could make near carbon zero transport in France a reality much sooner, and for a fraction of the cost of full-sized EVs,
    From ChatGPT:
'According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), France's total oil consumption in the transportation sector in 2019 was approximately 900,000 barrels per day, which is equivalent to about 142.83 million liters per day. Total electricity needed = 792.38 million kWh/day / 1,000 = 792.38 MW"
1,331 million square meters (or 1,331 km^2) of solar panels would be needed to generate 792.38 million kWh of electricity per day in France, assuming an average solar panel efficiency of 17% and an average solar generation of 3.5 kWh/m^2/day.
In summary, the total cost of installing 1.3 million square meters of solar panels would be approximately $97.5 million for the solar panels themselves, and $195 million for installation costs, for a total estimated cost of $292.5 million.'
Dividing the $300 million by the 28 million households in France comes out to about $11 per household by GPT's figures to convert France's transportation power requirements to solar electric. GPT also estimates that there are about 2.75 billion square meters of built-up roof area in France and about 1.3 million square meters of roof area required to produce that.
According to data from the French Ministry of the Ecological Transition, as of 2019, the total built-up area in France (which includes residential, commercial, and industrial buildings) was approximately 5.5 billion square meters. Assuming that rooftops cover roughly 50% of the built-up area, we can estimate the total roof area in France to be around 2.75 billion square meters, and roughly only 5% of that roof would be needed to provide France's transportation needs.
Assuming those figures are accurate, It seems stunningly compelling to convert to EV, but one also has to consider that it takes the average Electric car about 3 to 5 year to offset the carbon required to produce the 1/3 ton of batteries they require, plus the environmental impact required to produce the lithium and cobalt and dispose of it. And again, that's where Mr. Boo's Scooter's 15kg battery and Elton's 27 kg battery vs Tesla Model 3's 300kg of battery pay off in a big way in terms of environmental impact.

    • @MeandMonAmi
      @MeandMonAmi  4 місяці тому

Well, I think this is an excellent measure and should be expanded to several european countries, at least in terms of a measure implemented by all EU countries. Without a doubt, it will encourage the use of more electric vehicles and make it easier for people with lower economic means to make this transition. However, the problem still arises with charging infrastructure, especially for those living in apartments without a house where they can charge their cars.

I live in the UK and had a heat pump installed in March 2023, together with all new radiators, cavity wall insulation and new loft insulation. Not really impressed with it all, and at times it has a mind of its own and decides not to work. It has been looked at several times, and deemed to be working ok. It is no cheaper to run than the central heating that ran using my old gas combi boiler. On the really cold freezing days that we had prior to Christmas, it was costing me a minimum of £10 per day for all electricity that I use in my 4 room bungalow.....I live alone, so expensive to run then! My loft now looks like an engine room! Personally, I don't recommend heat pumps, though I imagine that heat pump technology and the huge size will improve in the future.

@@MeandMonAmi Hybrids = about as much use as a flaccid member at a naked wife swapping party with a surplus of up for it widowers, too much weight, too much "gubbins" needed, spares to buy, still needs mot with emissions testing et al that aren't needed for BEV, we all hear about the amount of moving parts needed for an ICE compared to BEV, but no-one adresses the lipstick pig that is hybrid running two lots of tech & drivetrains... how many additional components does that necessitate do you think?

Probably already stated, but a smart more or less without breaking EU rules on competition circular movement, for anyone who hasn't been to france the cars are like going to a renault & citroen car rally combined, with a smidgen of other car brands (often hire cars when i'm anally counting them for EV's at a valley roundabout in chamonix Oon my way to get a beer from a canadian micro brewery) ..that one connects with the nearby descent from Switzerland, so unless you stopped the cars to ask point of origin, assumptions have to be made, but also there is a lot of govt investment in French brands (unlike the big sell offs in the uk) ..so getting back to basics the lease is cheap, the tax is mainly to france, as are other benefits including clean air.
Not having an AMi (though we do still have a 24kWhr old school leaf) we are aware of the screamers (for effect) where the cry of not enough chargers are concerned (we live in the charger neglected countryside of the uk & managed just fine) we have been jealous of the efforts to put in chargers in france, the network is frankly incredible overall, with chargers making it to remote hamlets / villages & small towns depicted by Tim & Mr Boo's travels, ...whilst "perfect" is individual perception the set up & chance of grabbing a more remote charger in france 5 years ago was way better than the uk where we had to hop from Nissan to BMW dealers more often than not (but thank god for Milton Keynes EV foresight) 10 years ago a raft of uk tax money went to mainly tory mates to hoover up cash on a 3 year jolly to install badly positioned trickle chargers & then not maintain them, so within 18 months they were pretty much dead, these were handed over a little while ago to BP / chargemaster ...when you asked councils they didn't answer you or ping ponged you from town council to district council & back again... it was a con.
France's more remote chargers are a boon to travel & trade, (they saw that from the outset) & whilst this lease set up is going to cost a lot of money, more infrastructure problems france is pretty bull headed as to the drive forward, Tim, I hope you can do apiece on the a bit flakey (till it happens) car park solar legislation that is also needed to bang out EV ownership acceptance & green power to the grid when it happens, ..as tim also mentioned "connexion" french news for english speakers is a great resource to have, even if you don't pay for subscriptions the headlines give you a heads up to research it elsewhere.
Overall though its not that different to the scottish scheme from 2021 !? helping out with EV purchases (not just limited to cars, but including Ebikes, Emopeds, E-Motorcycles, aimed at an amount accessible to get a family / numerous members of a family the ability to buy & travel, so a family might buy a small EV & a college age teen an E-motorbike / e-moped for example where otherwise it was reliant upon sketchy countryside buses & long hours, Macron has gone beyond that, I cannot see it is overly sustainable at the starting point but it is obviously going to pump a lot more BEV's into the second hand market, alleviating some of the financial strain.

It's beyond me why anyone would even want a Tesla given their history of terrible quality and worse customer service (which is a problem that stems right from the very top of the company). Sitting here in the United States of America I look at that list of qualifying cars and wish we had that many reasonably priced electric car models to choose from here. Instead we have an overabundance of Tesla and other very high-priced electric models, most of which come with significant waiting periods to even acquire once purchased, leaving too many of us no real electric vehicle options. When I purchased my last vehicle in December of 2021 the only model (regardless of manufacturer) that was available to be shipped before July 2022 was the Tesla Model S Plaid so I bought a gasoline powered vehicle instead.

I hear you! Though waiting times here aren’t much difference. Ami’s were taking a year..

No waiting now (2023-24) for Tesla. Other EVs readily available on dealer lots. But I agree that customer service is a big (self-imposed) problem for Tesla compared to legacy companies. I have a Model Y and a Honda. I can get an appointment at the Honda dealer tomorrow, if I need servicing, compared to 10 days out for Tesla.

"we have an overabundance of Tesla". That would be because people are buying everything they make, then? I only have one, so there are plenty left for you when you come round.

Could you try to keep the subtitles all one colour and size please @meandmonami ? Very hard to read constantly changing size and colour for us who are visually challenged 👍
