In France, its the autoroute and you would think in Romania they would use autostrada because the language is close to Italian and strada is used there for street. The Romanian elite has always has a closeness to the French culture and language and autoroute was the borrowing for the motorway and it stuck. You guys are British and here in the states we call them freeways but originally they were built for the military to get around quickly - the national defence highways was the official term but it never took hold. Their convenience changed how all of us grew up and have lived in the West. Enjoyed the discussion about a more practical EV. Thanks for the video! 😊

I have been driving a Dacia Spring Extreme since November 2023 and I like it very much. I never really make big trips and I don't go on the highway either and the range of about 220km is more than enough for me. There are plenty of charging stations around here, so that is not a problem. I really enjoyed the switch to electric!
There is a problem with Dacia the companies current ownership.
Read the Wikipedia page for Dacia. Originally it was Romanian and there is no problem with that, however after it was bought and then sold by Renault, it ended up in the hands of Russian state-owned institute NAMI. Russia is too homophobic and invading Ukraine is not good, so it's not good to buy anything Russian, it's even worse if it's from a state owned company.
@@matthewbaynham6286 That is wrong. Renault sold the Lada brand back to Russia, not Dacia. That is still Renault. The Spring is only branded a Dacia, it is made by Dongfeng in China, a joint venture with Renault. Dacia could not sell cars in western Europe if it was Russian owned. So please, get your facts right.
There are no Russian cars for sale at the moment as essential parts are not being exported to Russia.
The reason why the Spring costs so much here (in China it costs under 10000 Euros) is the import and some electronic gadgets mandated by the EU (Eurocall, auto break, lane assist ect)

Great video, we live in France in the countryside and a 100% electric car just wouldn’t work for us. We opted for a hybrid and it’s working just fine. Surprised this chap didn’t opt for a plug-in hybrid, best of both worlds.

Hi Warbabe, the plug in hybrid for the daily car was just too expensive, they are eye wateringly pricey as you’re not getting the govt cash back. We were looking at the KIA SUVs, I love the RAV 4 Prime also. But in the end in addition to the expense most of them are more luxurious and we didn’t want to have essentially a luxury work car that was going to get wrecked. So then the plan was to eventually get a hybrid or even just petrol SUV as the occasional use second holiday car but we spent the cash on something else and ended up doing the Megève trip in the Berlingo. We’re a little more versed in the technology now so I doubt we’d have the disaster we had coming back again but you’re correct; if expense wasn’t an object we’d have a second car and it would likely be a PHEV.

It's blatantly obvious there is a benefit to going ELECTRIC if you're commuting or in fact working in a localised area.
On a recent trip to Jersey I was dumbfounded to see a lack of electric cars.
Why, you may ask?
The bloody island has a speed limit of 40mph yep FORTY MILES AN HOUR!
The average road is JUST wide enough to pass two of those dumpy buses they have in service there.
Jersey is only 5 x 9 miles in size, Elvis would be a King of the Road there, even the Ami's top speed wouldn't be that much of an issue as the majority of the time you're only doing 30mph🤗
I had to laugh, while sitting at the lights coming into St.Helier, the first three cars behind the bus I was on were Range Rovers with only one person in them🤦🏻♂️

Interesting to see the hugely practical Berlingo. Of course it isn't the best option for a longer journey on Italian motorways in the ski season. It isn't designed for that. If a new Tesla, BMW, Audi or many other of the longer range cars was used, the journey would be more comfortable and no charging stress (missing the Super Charger was obviously the main problem in this example).
True. Actually our plan was to buy a second car; a plug in hybrid for the long journeys and occasional local use but we spent the cash elsewhere. I was at pains to point out the Berlingo isn’t the easiest for longer journeys even when you don’t compound its short range by missing the charger. Other EV models will be far superior for this kind of long range work and getting better all the time.

I have a Spring here in SW France and absolutely love it. It is perfect for the farming area I live in with winding lanes and hills. I got in June last year and it is really great for my driving style and life. I get just over 220 km out of it on a full charge in winter, and just under 300 in the summer, more than enough. It's nippy, agile and great fun. i would not go back to petrol or diesel.

I loved our Citroen Berlingo we had the 1.2 petrol model owned it for nearly 5 years the most versatile car I’ve ever owned.
we would swap our zoe for an electric kangoo.....if we could afford one.

@@a.di.6843 In case of the AMI I had a 500Wp 48V Panel on but it was very unpractical because ever so slightly to big. I now have a flexy 250Wp Panel, also 48V directly wired into to 48V Battery and that puts in about a good kWh per day. If you stand in the sun, more. It has the advantage that it goes over most of the glass roof, cooling the thing down considerably, or better, it heats up less. Its a bit like being in the shade.We screwed it into the plastic roof into the steel support, does not budge while driving or in the wind. 1kWh is about 12km, with luck you get 15. With an additional power bank, that doubles and your AMI goes 100km. Or you charge your power bank but loose the 12-15km. The good thing with this is, that the battery charges while you drive, the power bank is not only loosing thru the conversion to 230V but also can not charge while driving.
On the Berlingo you easily fit 500-700Wp, but it has a 400V Battery and it needs converting. It also uses way more power, about 3-4times the electric consumption if you use it as a normal car, what it is.
The effect would be with luck 3km per day, hardly worth it because at the supercharger you get that the first 20seconds.
For the AMI it translates into 20% range increase, so yes, worth it.

In fact, there are pros and cons to transitioning to and using an electric vehicle compared to a combustion one, but the technology is increasingly advanced, with ever greater range. Perhaps the only downside is the purchase price, which may take some time to offset compared to a diesel, for example.

Thank you Christian and Tim for the brilliant chat and insights, it's this sort of' boots on the ground' experiences are of the most practical value to people looking at making practical decisions, more than the extremist hype and clickbait we most often encounter.
What you relate seems to enforce the notion that affordability and practicality will drive innovation and a shift to electric more so than forced mandates and forcing some people to pay to incentivize others to adopt.
Something like Christian's Citroen Berlingo would seems something many in America would opt for as a piratical choice if they were comfortable it would be as dependable and reliable as what they expect from something from Honda or Toyota.
I have friends here on the West Coast of America who spend most of their day on the road and routinely do 200 to 600mi trips in Teslas,. for them a 20min charge to add 3 hours of driving is of no consequence, and the Tesla Charging network is more than adequate and their vehicles have been practically trouble free and say they would lament going back to ICE vehicles. However, three friends who bought Kia EVs, largerly for low acquisition cost and incentives hardly drive them due to lack of fast charging locations, marginal range and agonizingly long charge times, and two have had serious reliability and customer service issues and have now adopted disdain for electric vehicles in general.
One friend who watches Me Mon Ami just related that for him, his Kia is unfit for the purpose most overly mobile Americans require, and it doesn't make much financial or environmental sense if used for occasional short trips like the AMI does.
Another friend, a wealthy individual, a brilliant engineer with a large company, home who can ans has owned some of the most exclusive vehicles in the world, loves driving nearly 10 year old Nissan Leaf he charges from his off-grid solar home and farm. He says is the best vehicle he gets more joy out of than any vehicle he's ever owned. He and his wife did buy a Tesla Model-X, for long trips, but between their two Leaf's the Tesla for the most part has become a museum piece. He recently upgraded the battery on his leaf to a longer range LFP pack and and says it likely will likely outlive himself.
Thanks again Tim and Christian for being an inspiration to take a stoic step back and look at what we require and gives us real joy in life.
Great comment and I love the thought of Americans making “piratical choices” 😂 Once the range issue is solved in the minds of people in the US they’ll flock to EVs. Oddly, as most people have parking, the US is more practically placed for the transition than most European countries. Mandating EVs here will be problematic without waaay more parking spaces sporting a charger. None of it impossible, just needs leadership and a desire to make it happen.
It’s funny I’ve been doing my driving lessons in a ‘normal ev’ and whilst the air con and suspension are very nice I love getting back in my ami to drive home. It’s somehow connected to the road and the world in a way more expensive cars aren’t. (Obvs perhaps not as good in a smash..)
Had a berlingo 1.5d for three yrs swiss army knife vehicle 65+ mpg 58.000 miles when.i changed was considering the ev berlingo dealer here in northern ireland said 100 mile range in cold weather was best i could expect plus poor charging network here as bbc spotlight programme found out so c5 aircross 1.5d another great video

we would never go back to the diesel. love our zoe e car for local trips and because France has invested in chargers ....long trips are fun and possible. we drove 1200km on holiday for €19 fuel ! free charging at most Ibis hotels overnight. stress free.

The VW ID.7 has a range of 700KM and a recharge time (10%-80%) of 25 minutes. The hatch back version was released a few months ago, but the estate version is coming out very soon.

It’s not in sight for the vast majority of people for one very simple reason: prohibitively expensive. Yes, the technology has cracked it - which is a good thing. Unfortunately the prices are still very…. silly - and out of reach.
Once they’re sensibly priced, and they need to be otherwise the ‘point of use’ pollution problems will continue, well then we’re laughing.
It can’t happen quick enough either and I speak as a dedicated ‘petrol head’ for 50 years this year(😳).
That last bit scares the crap out of me: 50 years driving quick cars! Where’s that time gone?

An overlooked point about range claims in advertising materials, is that they're based on non-highway driving cycles.
The test criteria is below, if you're average speed is higher, your range will be less, sometimes significantly less than the officially claimed range
Class 3 WLTP test 'continuous, no stops'
589 seconds at average 15.7mph, peak 35mph
433 seconds at avg 27.6mph, peak 48mph
455 seconds at avg 37.7mph, peak 60mph
323 seconds at avg 58.4 mph, peak 81mph

Heard enough! Owners of these complain that they only get 70-100 miles! The range is rubbish.
Alot Of electric cars especially for Australia are coming out now with 450km 470km like BYD Atto 3 small nice looking SUV .

With 275 km range it's a short-ish range car even by today's standards. 5 years from now I'm sure it will be 400+ km for the same price or lower.
Ive never felt my diesel emissions were guiltworthy, as a Euro6 Ulez compliant vehicle.
If environmental stewardship is the main concern, we need to remember that if you have a working car already, the
worst environmental mistake you could make is to order *any* new car. The emissions released manufacturing your next new car are the equivalent of driving your existing car another 100,000 miles.
Its better to keep what we have already, until the wheels fall off

Timely video. I had doubts about purchasing a Tesla Model Y. More than a year later I know electric cars with home chargers actually perform very well for normal use and an occasional longer trip. If you frequently travel long distances then gas is still more convenient.

Electric vehicles do not like motorways. They perform better at slower speeds and are more efficient. You have to have home charging . They don’t like cold weather either . Before buying do lots of research,it’s a new way of driving , buy second hand for first e.v. The batteries are lasting longer than 8 years . Cheap ev , seat M ii , Hyundai ionic , Renault Zoe . Stay charged.
My EV is perfectly good on a motorway. Yes range is reduced a bit in winter but if you did an accurate range measuring exercise on a petrol or diesel car in winter you would see that you are using more fuel. I don't have home charging but then I have a charging host who does via Co Charger. She runs hers off solar panels so what I pay ( a fraction of normal public charging) goes straight in her pocket
@timnicholls9827 my diesel Mercedes E Class, is a very large car but still has a highway brimmed range of 650 miles and at 51 mpg, which I use regularly, going forward and back to the Highlands of Scotland. What is the range on your EV and the price per mile on long journeys using expensive rapid chargers ?
My first 1 year in an EV and 9000K miles later, I’m very happy I made the move to an EV.
There’s just too many advantages over ICE.

Hello from Canada. My '23 Chevy Bolt euv LT has been flawless, and after buying it I sold five gas and diesel vehicles, as I didn't want to drive them anymore. I don't see myself having an ice vehicle again.

Hi Christian my Irish friend :) how much do you pay per kwh? Here in uk I pay 9pkwh for 4 hours . Here in uk they are about to start charging nearly £200 a year road tax on electric cars made after 2017 , my leaf 30 is about to be £30 as it's old . Thanks for sharing
Hi lookoutleo; you forced me into going off to look up my kWh rate and it’s gone up by 5c to 20c in off peak hours…. I reckon we’ll be changing supplier. Even so it’s still around a quarter the amount we pay for diesel. Diesels around €1.77 now, last time I did the calculation it was around €1.90.

My first EV is now 8 years old from new. In that time it has only covered 40k miles but yet the battery has degraded by 33%. on long journeys it is an expensive to run at rapid charger prices, logistical nightmare, so much so, I have given it to the wife, who uses it as a shopping trolley now, eccentially tethered to it's octopus go home charger range. I would never buy another EV, ever again, they are just not fit for purpose.

I've owned a Hyundai Ioniq 5 for two years now, and quite honestly cannot fault it. People complain about range problems on long journeys, but I value a coffee and comfort break every couple of hours - which is 150 miles or so on a French autoroute. I have solar panels at home, my electricity supplier allows me to charge off-peak at 7.5p per unit, whilst paying me 15p a unit for exports - so I win all round.

I am a petrol head too .. but I am also open to electric cars, what I do not like is that car companies force you to move in place or giving you a good alternative.
Your video spent 10 min nearly half on battery range. Ive been driving an EV now for more than 4 years and I no longer pay attention to charge status. I think range anxiety was made up during the early days of EV, a hang over from petrol cars looking for fuel stations and lowest prices every few days. Home charging is the key, its just never empty. I still have 5 petrol cars and a motorbikes as legacy vehicles but will replace them bar the 1958s, over time with EVs.
Every year I do a trip of 2200km to see the family over the holiday season and occasionally weekend 430km trip where I pick up a charge along the way, no different to any of my petrol cars only way way cheeper.
Do you miss the engine noise? ---- V8 burble of my Holden is a nice sound, but in reality 99% are comparing it to a clickety clackety diesel they have at home, or dreaming of a childhood exotic car from their bedroom wall they will never own.

No, I absolutely do not miss the diesel. Laboring up the (many) hills with a noisy, heavy, lumbering lump of metal in the front is bonkers compared to this. Now a V8 on the other hand… I want to get my hands on a Jeep YJ 4.0 with a straight 6 just for fun. I had one back in the day. An absolute planet killer for sure; but it’ll only do 1000km per year so who’s it harming?
EVs are currently suited to local journeys owing to the limited charging options and limited battery capacity. Remember, charging takes time, so long haul business trips where arriving on time can be important are not ideal for EVs. Imagine having to wait for a charger to become available, knowing your charge time is 40 to 60 minutes once you are plugged in. And the cost of public charging is high, almost equalling petrol prices. To conclude, we are in the first phase of EV adoption/transition. Phase 2 will address the afore mentioned points, with more chargers, faster chargers and higher capacity batteries. Start saving now! Yiur EV PX will doubtless bring tears to our eyes ...Merci!
In the early 1900's you had to purchase gasoline at places like hardware stores, as there were no "stations". Engines boiled over, nails from horseshoes littered the road, routinely flattening tires. Long trips were difficult. It will get better.
@@richmeyer2064 Purchasing gasoline in jugs from stores is where we will be in 10-15 years. When most people drive electric cars it doesn't make sense to have gas pumps. Stores will then have a couple of jugs in the back for the few people still driving gasoline cars.
We have been driving EVs for 5 years. I would say we are in 4th or 5th generation. The new vehicles and those becoming available this year have changed a lot. More efficient, higher ranges, faster charging .... The charger networks in many countries are also improving rapidly.
There may be a future for sports car and bikes with combustion engine: they can be adjusted to run on Hydrogen. Keep the noise, but green. I believe the Ferrari guys could would accept that tradeoff.

Most people don’t need 500 miles. Lots of cars can do 300+ miles these days which is enough for most.
Poor range, lack of infrastructure, not that environmentally friendly, resale prices dropping like a brick and very high insurance costs…no thanks
This isn’t every electric car. Mine does 270 miles and takes 45 minutes max to charge to 80%. For the last 2.5 years it’s been fine. And it’s not even a Tesla.😂😂
our power is hydro...costs 0.19 per kw car does 400km and car cost us €14.5 new (demo model from renault) . saves us €50 per month in diesel. best vehicle i have ever owned. no maintenance, low insurance in france, free parking, toll free entry, drive in low emission zones, quiet, relaxing to drive. just try one.

My EV does 300 miles easily. Insurance cost is not much higher than my wife’s ICE and residual comparable with my previous Merc. So, I don’t agree.

Im all for EVs as long as the Govt dont have the power to remote shut down as that would be a violation of human rights , I can understand if a wanted criminal stole your EV then it should have a Killswitch but for good honest citizens the govt should not have any control over our property.

Well that was very well balanced and informative (as well as entertaining). The fact that we can see the pollution in the air, and that we now have the technology to stop it and make our air more breathable convinces me. The uk government has removed any grants that we historically had but the price of EVs is now much more affordable. I’m looking with great interest at the Dacia Spring which is going on sale in the uk for £14,995 in the next few weeks.
