America vs. Tesla! Why does the US hate Tesla so much?

  • While Tesla had AI day on August 19th, the US government had an EV event the week before and didn't even mention Tesla by name, much less invite them. Beyond this, the NHTSA and US congress have both started seemingly spurious investigations into Tesla--for battery fires and for full self driving (FSD)--in the past weeks. What on earth is going on here? Why is Tesla, that most quintessential American startup company, taking so much flak? And how can Tesla resolve its problems? Let's find out!

GM has $109B in long term debt and $23B in cash on hand. Their 2020 EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) was only $2.7B. If you take out interest on large loan amounts then that $2.7B is going to be less.
Ford has $153B in long term debt, $16B in cash on hand, and 2020 EBIT of $2.8B.
GM is 'short' $86B. Ford is short $137B. And neither is earning the sort of money needed to pay those obligations off in 30 years.
How do GM and Ford survive during the transition from ICEVs to EVs? They won't be able to make as much profit from an EV as from an ICEV because they won't quickly reach economies of scale. And they are almost certain to experience an overall loss in sales numbers as EV producers take sales away from them.

That explains, sorta, the reaction of individuals. From government, however, it comes from one party out of their conservative nature, and from hatred of environmentalists. From the other party, it's the union thing, a fondness for regulation, and distrust of big money. For both, perhaps, Musk is from another planet and must be treated with suspicion.

The comparison to Apple is interesting. I dabbled with Apple computers in the early days - APPLE I, II, and III. The closed architecture ran me off, and does to this day. As does price, repairability, and the OS in general. I want a computer to do what I want it to do in the manner I want it to do it. So I tend to let others deal with the Apple stuff. PC for me, See? .
Apple still excels in video editing, manipulating, and related tasks. In our TV stations, MACs do all the video editing and manipulation, as well as Graphics creation. But after that, it is PC based MS and Linux all the way.
Apple the company and the hardware is a pain in the ass to deal with , as Tesla can be. However, comma, Apple, Tesla, MS and Unix/Linux all have their role and their place across all tasks. There's not a one size fits all solution at the moment. Except for my personal transportation needs.

Competition is dying in the US and is being replaced by anti-competitive mindsets and behaviour. It is happening on many fronts and it is coming from the big players who don't want competition to enter their markets or reduce the value of their stocks and investment incomes.

My experience with a union (Teamsters, not UAW, but likely the same): Was working nights and had the night off so stayed out all day. got home at midnight and was told I had been called in six hours ago. Called and was told I wasn't needed. The next day, union steward told me if I was ever called in on my night off, "Go get as drunk as you can and show up. Once you put one foot on the property, you get four hours of double overtime." That is criminal behavior, as I believe I should do work to earn money, not just show up drunk.

Maybe you missed Musk's comment that Capital is just distilled Labor. All wealth is created by labor but workers have only one mechanism with which to balance the power of management, and that is labor unions. Nobody in a powerful position likes to share power but Tesla will do what it does with or without a labor union. Musk even said that with humanoid robots there will have to be a guaranteed income. He thinks way ahead of most humans. I am keeping my Tesla and my Tesla stock union or no union.

    • @RuedigerDrischel
      @RuedigerDrischel 3 роки тому +3

Value, not wealth is created, among others, by labor. Worker, who have their fair share in value creation, have more options than the unions as a mechanism to represent their interests. Unions have been many times forces to block innovation, slowed down processes to make the world a better place. Additionally, the unions own ‘power of management’ was also sometimes used more for the benefit of the union bosses, less the union members. The unions, once paramount important for the development of free markets, have an outdated business model dating back to the 19th century. They better innovate this model in their own interest before they are obsolete.

I am a Tesla enthusiast and am also a unionist. Unions are the reason the middle-class exist. After 1935 the passage of the Wagner act legalized unions the middle class was born. It was the first time that people could organize legally without being murdered with impunity by police, the military and the National Guard. [See the Ludlow Massacre] It is unfortunate that Tesla and Elon musk have demonized unions, as does this publication. Unfortunately due to the lack of knowledge of labor history in the US I fear the US is destine to repeat the past. It will always amaze me how willing the American public is to shoot themselves in the head and not realize they are screwing themselves. Mean while Europe embraces unionism and companies thrive. The electric innovations presently under way will create more union jobs with or without teslas participation.

I did like the video, Doctor Know-it-All. I have a strong tendency to lean toward the "get-out-of-the-way" option. I live in France where I have seen the pro-active, get-involved, government scenario play out in real time and over a long time (several decades). The Administrative State is not good at picking winners and losers....and once having chosen a loser is too embarrassed to admit the mistake and continues to pour tax-payer money into the loser until everybody forgets to notice. This last statement is NOT gratuitous, throw-away rhetoric. It is what really happens. Tesla is perfectly capable of handling itself in the rough and tumble of real-world competition. Tesla does not need support from Uncle Sam and frankly I would be disappointed if it got in line behind all the other rent-seekers already in place.

You and Sandy are voicing what many of us feel.
The US Government can seriously impede Tesla's progress if they continue down this road. I believe Tesla will survive and thrive but it will cost $Billion$ of dollars if Tesla in throttled. If these same dollars were invested in the infrastructure we need to support the EV revolution (clean power grid, charging stations etc) including EV purchase incentives which can aid Legacy Auto to transition it will pay off in the future. Tesla is going to remain the Gold Standard in EVs but I also believe that our OEMs are capable of making acceptable EVs. Not every ice vehicle today is a luxury model. The majority are vehicles that the general public can afford. EVs will be no different. Most models will be priced so that average consumers can afford them and people will choose a model that appeals to their particular wants/needs.
The EV community needs to rally around the theme of expanding the development and production US made EVs and insist that our Government support the effort. Innovation will force the improvements we need but the Government can certainly make it harder giving China the time they need to EAT OUR LUNCH.
