But the dominant run is something that needs to be equalled to put it to rest.
That, I'm afraid to say, will all come down to who is the ref on the day. As we know, from the past 50 odd years, refs are biased in favour of the AB's.

I think you also have to take into account that South Africa rotates their team(s) almost every mathc, giving everyone an opportunity. Whilst this may lower their chances of winning the test, this rotation of players leads to more South African's who are ready and are able to play, thus building South Africa's strength for the next 10-15 years at the very least.
Comparing teams in different cycles is nigh on impossible. In 2011 to 2015 the rest of the top test nations weren't competitive vs the All Blacks at all. Thus the All Blacks completely dominated the rugby landscape. Whilst the Boks have won back to back RWC's, and had a good 2024, results wise they aren't close to the win rate the All Blacks had in that period. Comparing these two teams you now have to also consider how good the rest of the rugby world is now and when the All Blacks were all conquering. And that is a very subjective debate.

And apart from 2 X 1 point wins, they smashed everyone. Weird time when Wales, Scotland and Ireland were truly rubbish. They hadn't managed to move professional like the Southern Hemisphere had.
Oh man, the Nic Mallett saga. For any of the younger generation reading these comments, I suggest a deep dive into the Mallett saga. His spat with SARU was the stuff of legends. Had he received 10% of the support Rassie does, Mallett would have achieved much the same, is my guess.

That Zombie at the end is doing the Irish dirty and it makes me chuckle. Beating them at Eden Park doesn't settle anything. To settle it, a fair few of the current team need to dominate to similar levels like the AB's did settle that we're equal. would this team beat that team. yes but the acheivements aren't quite as nailed down. That AB run of dominance was ridiculous.
No it won’t. You need to consistently beat other top sides in their own fortress like the 2010s AB side did year after year. Not just the ABs at Eden Park either, but France in Stad de France and Ireland in principality stadium.
2015 AB's all day every day. The 2015 AB's dominated everyone, every year, every comp. No Dispute. The current SA team is outstanding, and could be that and more, but the win record over that amount of years is hard to pass over. The next few years be the litmus test to define the difference. Either way as an AB's supporter, I'll always have much luv for our SA brutha's and sista's.
I rate the 2011 side as our greatest. McCaw, Carter, Nonu, Conrad, Read all in their primes Enforcers like Kaino, Thorn. We had guys like Muliaina on the reserves 😏
The 2015 AB's side had a better win record against all other nations, however, at that time the Northern Hemisphere sides were nowhere and Arg were weak. So, it wasn't so much that they were outstanding, its just the competition was very weak at the time. Weak sides always make a team look better. The 2015 Bok were much weaker than the current side and the pushed the AB's on a few occasions, so if, hypothetically they were to play each other, I think the Boks would win.
I will just mention one thing you author touched on. That ‘Best ever AB’s’ team, only beat the Boks by 2 points in 2015 semi final. Could’ve gone either way that day. And those Bok players will still technically Babies. That AB team, is the gold standard and I’d agree with that, but this Bok team would stop them. I have no doubts about that
@@wernertukker5420 yep, not to forget the 2011 to 2015 ABs are apparently so great, yet could never win the rugby championship and world cup in the same year too🙂 This Boks team is clearly better, given other rugby teams are alot better than they were in 2015🙂👌🏻
All Blacks 2011 to 2015 was something else. For us 🇿🇦 we must dominate 2023 to 2027 to compare. Having said that, I'm loving where we are at the moment.
Unquestionably the two greatest sides of the professional era and it is no mystery why they are being compared with each other. How about we start with what is pretty much undisputed in the debate: - The All Blacks has the superior win record, not just during their period of domination, but during the entire professional era. - Hansen got the ABs when they were at a much better place than when Rassie took reigns of the Boks - The Bok side of the last few years will probably go down as the most innovative side since the game turned professional. Now, the hard stuff: Yes, the All Blacks were more dominant between world cups then, but as counterpoint, the standard of rugby has gone up in the last ten years. Does the latter offset the former? Who can decide that? Then we get to the other massive spanner in the works: COVID. South Africa wins the 2019 world cup, set themselves up for an attempted dominant run and then the world shuts down. While there was still a Six Nations and a tournament between Australia, New Zealand and Argentina that took place (all behind close doors) the waves of infections just caught South Africa very badly and the result was a team that went almost 20 months without so much as a single training session together! When the Boks took the field again, they were incredibly rusty and its only because of an ultra simple (and yes, boring) game plan that saw them win the series against the BI Lions. If a direct comparison was already incredibly hard, COVID makes it downright impossible. As a Saffa I'll back these Boks against anyone, but I'm well aware of how Carter and Co came to SA and committed Geneva violations.
This is a heck of comment. Not even I am this balanced. The only thing I might add would be to say, dominance nowadays might mean something different today than what it did in the AB era. Maybe getting 13/15 or 12/14 is what dominance look like today. Maybe they lose a test here and there but win the silverware for the next 4 years. As a way to allow for the quality of rugby today compared to then
@RD-sp5us Dude, I'm so balanced, I tape my balls to the sides of my legs to ensure an even spread 😅 thanks for the kind words. Yeah comparing across different eras - even as little as ten years - is an impossibility. Heck, we had Messi/Ronaldo and Federer/Djokovic/Nadal in the same era and the fanbases are wildly split about who is the best in their respective fields. In the end, the best way I can say it is that the All Blacks of that era was the most aggressive and the most dominant team I've ever seen and it was a privilege to have watched them. I even did my hair like Carter's, he was my hero. But this SA team has something else - they might just be the most innovative side ever and they are mentally resolute. How about this: for simply winning on the day = 2015 All Blacks. For holding out in the last ten minutes to clinch the close game = Current Boks
@@JaemanEdwards until you showed up...Bokke score plenty of tries and you know it. Our wingers have bern electric and made many a defense look silly. Any wing of all the wings used. Equal if not more so than other teams. You just dont like them. Or us. Which is fine, but rugby us being transformed right infront if you. How to build a squad. Ever since he took over, Rassie have been nothing but innovative. Starting with building depth in the frontrow. Then it was the rest of the pack, now it is evolving our attack. Might not always be excuting but he definitely is changing the of what it will take to be successful at this level. You dont have to believe me, you dont have to agree. All you have to do is watch
As a Bok supporter I think we shouldn’t get carried away just yet! As Rassie himself has alluded to there are teams that have seriously embarrassed us, when we put 50 points and bagel the All Blacks and beat Ireland on a regular basis then we can be called the GOATS until then we are the best around and genuinely pushing for greatness, in my opinion!!
I think it’s a fair question, the 2015 ABs are the best AB team they ever produced and this current Bok side is the best SA have produced. It’s natural to ask which is better. Nostalgia biases me towards the ABs as they just never seemed to lose, the roster is a list of all time world greats. But we’re looking at them in the past, this current Bok side is still going and has the opportunity to improve on their record. We can have a definite answer when this Bok golden age ends. If it includes 3 world cups then the answer is clear.
From the outset let me make it clear, I recognise the upward trajectory under Rassie. Hats off to those who bought into his vision and supported his strategy, from the outside- the morale in the camp looks good. Rassie has earned the envious position to experiment with a number of aspects from coaching staff (like Brown) to players (to rotate 50 players in a season is unprecedented). It’s good to see the camradarie amongst the players while completing for jerseys. 2024 was better than 2023 but I still don’t believe we’re better than the ABs with Carter at 10. If we maintain the momentum then I believe we’ll surpass the 2015 ABs. At least one win in New Zealand is a must. Also, a grand slam should be on offer in 2026 to seal the deal or will we peak too soon. As Bok supporters we must enjoy it while it lasts, we have a giant target on our backs. Any self respecting team will celebrate a win against the current Boks. We’re under the spot light like never before. Stay strong, remember; Rassie is in their heads, he’s in their heads 🎼🎼🎼🎼 It’s ok if you sang that last bit
The game has changed incredibly in the past 10 years. The clock management and slowing down of the game, the increase in rewards for kicking, and of course the perfection of rush defence, NZ tactics have been exposed on an int'l level. For 100+ years, rugby was essentially a kick chase, set piece battle that nz excelled at breaking up with counter attacking. That counter has become less relevant over the past 2 decades and since refs have been stopping clocks at scrums and lineouts, fatigued forward are less of a liability. There are three instances where nz have showed how they tried to counter the way the game is shaping now, and failed. One, at rwc 2019, NZ didn't select Owen Franks for the squad because he wasn't mobile enough. Now, i doubt selecting franks would've got them past England in that SF, but it shows they were willing to give up scrum parity/dominance for play round the field. Got that wrong for 3 years and finally selecting our best props again. Two, in their first ever loss to the pumas in 2020, NZ seemed to purposely slow the game down at scrums and lineouts, then attempt high risk high reward set plays from practically every set piece outside their own 22. Instead of constructing phase play, they tried to turn the game into NFL. That imo was a disaster. And the third has been the failure of defence. NZ defence got shakier and shakier and finally came right in 2023. It's noticeable from the ABs to SR to NPC level. That wasn't cos no one wants to tackle. It's cos they concentrated on ball tracking drift d instead of marking up. Felix Jones would give a better explanation (and probably disagree with me), but upshot was NZ failed to coach defence for the revolutionised game This all said, i personally think the nzru have cooked their own goose. NZ played 14 tests in 2024. 5 of those were in NZ. It'll be similar in 2025 and beyond. Not selecting from players overseas, the old boys network that run coaching and selections, the players union having too much say (eg the players meeting to back fozzie in SA) and ultimately just the poor standard of refereeing in nz rugby. I'm a former ref (very amateur) so i know it's a horrible job, but i always knew the pro's were far better than me. Today, many seem to be doing a disservice to our players Fwiw, imo nz 2010-2017 team is the greatest ever with the 2013 as the peak (will never forget the Joburg tests in 2013/14). The Boks did not much between world cups, so they've got a fair amount to do to surpass that ABs, team, but they're a great team for sure. If we go year by year, the greatest team i ever saw was the 1996 ABs. The internet's not too interested in them tho
lekker video ... hard to say and who really cares ...2 wonderful eras .I Love the fact that The Springboks won 2 world cups in different continents and a lions series in between with very limited prep ( lions tour ) which was insane . It will never get better for the Springboks in terms of a 4 year cycle with the two biggest trophies. NZ team back then were next level !!!
NZ when they’ve won world cups they haven’t lost a game. I do like the Boks team but not the fans, not all but a lot, they have forgotten they lost to Ireland l, Etsebeth knock on penalty try overlooked, the red card for NZ and still only win by one point. I was actually rooting for the Boks to win all these game but wow the fans do the Boks absolutely no justice
The Springboks are the most disrespected team of all time. Nobody says the AB's were lucky, cheated, boring, druggies but all these labels have been attached to most of our WC wins.. As a South African this has become a bit silly. We won 2 World Cups and were the no1 team in 2024 but not so flash between them. We've got to at least match the ABs record and beat them at least 6/10 till the next RWC.
As a South African I will say not yet. If the current team dominate until 2027 and win another world cup then we can probably say they are the GOAT team.
i am a Bok and my answer is no cause AB dominated for lots of years they could beat any team easy scoring tries for fun home and away SA only on top few years still but they can work on scoring more tries AB whole team was excellent in attack from anywhere on the field and All the players had that great attacking ability.
As a Bok fan, theres no way we have the seperation in levels like the 2011-2015 ABs created. As it stands, rugby is SA is in a purple patch from Juniors to the top. Maybe only France has the same strength
South african juniors never win anything. Did you watch Roos lose to Kelston from NZ recently at the world schools tournament.? And the South African U20s aren't impressive either. As for senior rugby, everyone and their dog knows the Springboks got lucky against the All Blacks at the world cup and the first test of this year. What terrible refereeing in that first test. Straight robbery.
No. The Boks can do it with the squad and momentum they have now but they have to win a LOT to surpass the ABs. Includes beating the ABs more times than the ABs have beaten the them.
Springboks this season lost 2 including one at home, that would've been the worst season of the 2011-2015 All Blacks. The Boks are excellent and best at the moment, but... the facts comparing with 2011-2015 All Blacks side: - Between 2009 and 2017, 47 match winning streak at home - Equalled the 18 test winning streak - Won every test in 2013 - Lost one game a year in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 (all losses away) - The most losses in a season in this period was 2 in 2011 (both away)
Exactly this,. I believe this team would beat that team head to head but thats not the question and your reply is my reply to my fellow saffa's claiming otherwise. I think this squad could replicate similar stats and for me thats good enough to call their achievements equivalent. another WC win seals the deal for boks though.
Also, 2020 happened. But heres the funny thing: while I blame COVID for the Boks not looking great after that, I think COVID mifht have been the catalyst that streamlined our selections and experimentations and might be a contributing factor to us winning the Big One in 2023.
2024 springboks for me.. fans will cite the undisputed win ratio of the 2015 all blacks but I think that’s a lazy view. The international landscape wasn’t anywhere near as competitive as it is now with the rise of Ireland and France. The springboks have also won their back to back world cups outside of SA where as NZ has only won 1 World Cup outside of NZ.
Everyone knows you only won because the All Blacks were down to 14 for most of the game. And still you they couldn't score a try. In the 2023 world team only 3 Springboks made the team for a reason. 2023 Rugby World Cup Springboks 27 tries All Blacks 49 tries

It’s hard to say who is the best as the Boo team is still playing and not reached their full potential while in the past the All Blacks are seen as the GOAT. Same as Dan Carter and Antoine DuPont. We can’t call DuPont the GOAT as he is still only 27 that’s why I say Carter is the best player of all time but I do think DuPont will taken over that reign
biggest point the all blacks 2015 had it easier games, only boks and aussies were good at rugby ,maybe england the rest of the world teams were very easy to win, 2024 world rugby has changed ,its more difficult and competitive than 2015 so this bok team is better
I am not convinced the boks are that much better than any of the others. They win, and they have an edge, but hey are not decimating good teams. Unlike that 2015 ABs team.
What your thesis neglects is that its likely the AB’s of 2015 would not be “decimating” good teams of today. The world has caught up. The hemispheres are much more competitive. What people also forget is how many games that AB’s side won by very narrow margins. Quite a few in fact. The margins of victory don’t mean much. It just matters that you win. And statistically the Boks do it 86% of the time in an era where teams are far more competitive than in 2015. Ireland? Improved out of sight since 2015. Same for Scotland and France. England are still a bit of a banana skin. Its only Wales that has regressed terribly. All that NZ IP that gave them an edge has been cast to all corners of the empire. Your comparison needs context.

His spat with SARU was the stuff of legends. Had he received 10% of the support Rassie does, Mallett would have achieved much the same, is my guess.
Loving your videos, Huw!
I only discovered your channel a few weeks ago when a couple of your ‘shorts’ popped up on my feed and I’m glad they did! You clearly know your rugby and you have conversations with others who know their stuff aswell!
I’ll be awaiting your videos with eager anticipation from now on!…. Except maybe the Wales game reviews 🤦🏼♂️ it’s a tough time for us Welsh right now but at least we can say we have some of the best rugby channels in yourself, Squidge and Welsh rugby podcast! 🏴
thank you!
Haha like the zombie remix at the end : )
If we have a similar season next year and beat the ABs at Eden Park, then the debate will be settled.
Not just the ABs at Eden Park either, but France in Stad de France and Ireland in principality stadium.
cheers!
Hah. No.
McCaw, Carter, Nonu, Conrad, Read all in their primes
Enforcers like Kaino, Thorn.
As a Bok supporter, I have to agree. That AB team was phenomenal.
ALWAYS BOKKE ....until I die 💚💛🇿🇦
Unquestionably the two greatest sides of the professional era and it is no mystery why they are being compared with each other.
How about we start with what is pretty much undisputed in the debate:
- The All Blacks has the superior win record, not just during their period of domination, but during the entire professional era.
- Hansen got the ABs when they were at a much better place than when Rassie took reigns of the Boks
- The Bok side of the last few years will probably go down as the most innovative side since the game turned professional.
Innovative sides score tries. Playing dour negative defensive rugby is the opposite of innovative.
The GOLDEN era of Springbok rugby has only just begun! Get ready for a fantastic 2025!
Of course! 4 RWC wins, champions in 2019 and 2023. Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika 🇿🇦.
The Springboks play like scared cowards. They play the ugliest rugby. 😄
Stay strong, remember; Rassie is in their heads, he’s in their heads

It’s ok if you sang that last bit
From a South African. In a word, no they are not. They could become. But not there yet.
Felix Jones would give a better explanation (and probably disagree with me), but upshot was NZ failed to coach defence for the revolutionised game
This all said, i personally think the nzru have cooked their own goose. Today, many seem to be doing a disservice to our players
Fwiw, imo nz 2010-2017 team is the greatest ever with the 2013 as the peak (will never forget the Joburg tests in 2013/14). The Boks did not much between world cups, so they've got a fair amount to do to surpass that ABs, team, but they're a great team for sure. If we go year by year, the greatest team i ever saw was the 1996 ABs. The internet's not too interested in them tho
Kolisi is greater than mcaw. He won two world cups (away) won lions series stacked with Irish players at the peak of their game
Worst take I've ever read. Get the hell out of here with that bs.
Come back to me when Kolisi has won 98/111 (88%) games as captain, oh, and stays on the field for more than 50 min every game.
@rattleyourdags come back when all Blacks captain won world cup away twice
Kolisi is very good but he's still no McCaw.
McCaw is no Siya kolisi who won all major trophies
lekker video ... hard to say and who really cares ...2 wonderful eras .I Love the fact that The Springboks won 2 world cups in different continents and a lions series in between with very limited prep ( lions tour ) which was insane . It will never get better for the Springboks in terms of a 4 year cycle with the two biggest trophies. NZ team back then were next level !!!
In 1924 - 1925 the “invincible” All Blacks toured the UK, Ireland, France and Canada winning 32 games of 32. Beat that.

Ps,I've seen all our World Cup triumphs.I don't dint need to google
Yes SA have the aura of champs. AB seem to be grasping at excuses all the time. 😢
No one sees the Springboks as true champions. The world realises they got lucky. Sorry.
@l8on17 They're so delusional
The Springboks are the most disrespected team of all time. Nobody says the AB's were lucky, cheated, boring, druggies but all these labels have been attached to most of our WC wins.. Difficult for our fans to not defend their team.. That's why we shout out for our teams brilliance, nobody else is.. @@l8on17

You could have argued that all the nominated world players of the year should have been South African
😂😂😂
I think the boks need an epic winning streak or a few years like 2024 with an over 80% win rate .
If South African players were not playing for overseas clubs so much, the core of our players will dominate more consistantly.
I think we have to wait for eden Park to settle the debate.
South Africa are great but their resumé with the All Blacks ain’t the same.
The period of heavy political influence taken out Bok squads, and it's much closer.
Having said that, if the AB's would select from foreign based players as well.
That may change things also.
The debate will never be settled. This is the internet and it will forever rage on
Look The Boks was the most dominant team in the anateur era along with the ABs and the ABs being the most dominant in the pro era.Bokke have become the most dominant after Covid .Current Bokke still not close to the 2015 Abs but this current bok team is on their way.
SA rugby is on the rise, no doubt about it!
The Boks are excellent and best at the moment, but... the facts comparing with 2011-2015 All Blacks side:
- Between 2009 and 2017, 47 match winning streak at home
- Equalled the 18 test winning streak
- Won every test in 2013
- Lost one game a year in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 (all losses away)
- The most losses in a season in this period was 2 in 2011 (both away)
Exactly this,. I believe this team would beat that team head to head but thats not the question and your reply is my reply to my fellow saffa's claiming otherwise. I think this squad could replicate similar stats and for me thats good enough to call their achievements equivalent. another WC win seals the deal for boks though.
Don't forget they beat the AB's with thier b team.
@ Lol, you think we put out a B team to face the AB’s? Are you a bot?
@@mikewebb1134They did not face ABs with a B team. Dumbest thing I've ever heard.
