Funniest thing happened to me. So I just purchased my clipless pedals, shoes, and cleats and I had a ride to get used to them. So the next day I was really comfortable with them and at the end of my ride while I was coming to a stop in my garage.... I wondered why my foot wouldn't come out (slowly tipping over). Totally forgot to unclip when I stopped and fell on my garage floor.
It happened to all of us ;-)
happened to me today 😁 first day using clips
At least it was your garage and not some intersection
Same here first day using cleats fell over, however I have learned me lessons, now I am a pro 😅
7 years on, this is still happening lmao, had 2 tip overs in the past 2 weeks. First time I forgot, 2nd time I had already unclipped.. but tipped over on the other side.. Thankfully the drivers behind me were alert and gave me a wide berth to scramble up and off the road.
I just remember that you don't always have to be clipped in to ride, if i miss it the first time I just keep pedaling until it is safe to clip in again, vs trying to keep clipping in a falling over.
0:57 "And for those who drive on the correct side of the road"
I see what you did there Daniel Loyde ;)
Guy Weinberg sneaky.
"The correct side of the road" xD brilliant!
offended
@@jamesrogers3197 Yeah, I live in California, in North America. We drive on the right.
@@lukehamilton4655 missoura
@@jamesrogers3197 Nice!
Malaysia uses the correct side if the road
LOL @ the correct side of the road
+Kyle Van Lol indeed. Bonus points from that (even though I drive on the right).
That's a Top Gear reference, btw.
This is why some say GCN is essentially Top Gear of the cycling world.
I got a chuckle from that lol
If you're in a low enough gear as suggested, you can use one leg to do a few revs to get going before clipping the other in. I do this all the time
There's a golden rule: No matter how many times you have watched, analysed and memorized this kind of videos, the first time you use any type of pedals (with cleats) you'll fall just as Daniel Lloyd did it. Besides that, awesome advices.
Week at the moment with spd sl and 105 pedals, 0 falls.
@@aczech12 👏👏👏🏆🍪
This happened to me too, quite embarrasing and dangerous.
My tips:
Become proficient at unclipping with both feet (my OCD dictates that I alternate which foot I unclip to even out cleat wear)
Clipping out the foot nearest the centreline of the road often makes it easier to balance, due to the camber of the road (MTB habit: always dismount to the uphill side)
If you miss the clip when starting off, just keep pedalling to get up to speed, then try again. Don't dilly-dally in front of a queue of traffic.
I even out the wear on my cleats by swapping them every 6-12 months. less hassle
haha happened to me few times the first week after getting spds. first rule: unclip before braking :D
Always try and get your foot out of the pedal a good ten feet before your stop in case your foot doesn't come right out you'll still have time before you come to a stop.
How To Unclip like a pro? Tip 1: Don't unclip Tip 2: Trackstand
Your advice is spot on! I cannot emphasise enough the difference Speedplay pedals made to my cycling. Speedplay is the way to go, in my experience.
Thank you for these great [and at times humorous] videos.
Correct side of the road , Epic :)

Excelente demonstração, parabéns pelo trabalho. 👍🏻
This video helped me a lot, Thanks!
It's a good idea to unclip at the bottom of the pedal stroke you can get more 'heel twist' in that position than you can when the pedal is up and your knee is bent.
Another good vid gcn, best vids on UA-cam , most impressed by the cervelo ..
Excellent tutorial video! Thanks.
I watched this video as I have just started using SPD pedals. I find it more convenient to turn my foot towards the bike to release. However, it's a good idea to unclip before you need to. I approached a junction and forgot to unclip and so let gravity get the better of me. I didn't have a cushion to fall on.
well done. It was informative for me and adding humor made it more interesting
Always, always always unlip with your least dominant foot. I cycle in england I would never unclip with my left foot, as you suggest. When setting off I want POWER and to be able to clip in quickly. So I always unclip with my right foot, I have zero issues in doing so.
Probably the best AD I've completely watched before a GCN video. Nike Soccer, epic.
Legends has it that Matt has this video on repeat.
Time to go clipless ... but so dreading it!
Spd mountain pedals/mountain bike shoes with road bikes are the best combo for commuting
any other reason for that than easier walking?
Product placement love the Castelli socks! Good advice!
You filmed this at bear flat, just below my school beechen cliff!!!! - just got a trek 1.1 and really looking forward to using it
you made me laugh
on the right side of the road LOLOL
Great video! Wished this was available a couple of years ago, would've have avoided a couple of "embarrassing" moments. Had to learn the hard way but luckily came to the same suggestions in this video. Be careful with Speedplay Zeros they can get slippery so be careful with foot placement on smooth surfaces. Cheers!
I'm getting mine installed today and so excited and scared at the same time!!!! Gonna practice on grass at the park before I hit the road.
This might sound like a stupid question, but... are there any videos out there that give you tips or show you how to fall/break a fall, if you realize falling is inevitable? I just got clipless pedals and I'm terrified of them.
The mtb shoes are the same as mine :0 and btw great video I just got cycling shoes and pedals so every bit of tip helps
I just bought my first set of cleats ( SPD SM 56). They are multi release cleats, they are supposed to release in various directions.. I'm 65 and I am a little bit reluctant to use cleats because I have been using toe clips all my life without any problems. So, in case you fail to release in time, do you keep you hands on the handle bar and let yourself drop? I can imagine it would be easy to fracture your wrist if you tried to brace yourself, especially on pavement?
That fall...know the feeling :D
So happy I'm also living in one of the countries where we drive on the correct side of the road!
lol, he is a great actor !!!! thanks for this video.
Going clipless was the best choice i made!
Global Cycling Network , "for those of us who drive on the correct side of the road". Good humor; that made me laugh. I love your How To videos. Thank you for those.
Vishal Mody humour?! we were serious ;)

I'm an asshole who finds it hard to laugh at things most of the time, but that was really fucking funny lol
That fall ;D
Sabaku Almost as funny as Del Boy.
Ouch can't believe Dan didn't land on the beanbag
I think the most unbelievable presenter here is Matt.
Please do a video on how to track stand.
Doesn't falling on your side like that cause serious damage to the frame if your pedal on the side that yo fall to is on the top of the stroke? Especially while in the saddle, quite a lot of your weight is put through the cranks, twisting the spindle out of plane in the frame.
Review on those garmin vector power meters I see there? :)
I bought the SPD PD-A530 pedals since I wanted both a clip in side and a flat regular shoe side. I'm coming from SPD-SL pedals. Is the system much different? Is it worse?
“Missed the bean bag “... is the best! 🤣
Matt needs to watch this
Review the garmin pedals next plz
I’ve been trying to use regular tennis shoes with it but I’ve had issues with my feet flying off when going downhill. I tried straps but I could only get one side tight enough and the concern that the other one would pop off was too much of a distraction.
I now know how Daniel Lloyd felt when he fell. Stopped on the shoulder of the road to check my tires, start riding again have both my feet Clip in when I hit a thick patch of dirt on the shoulder of the road and fell down on my side. Could not unclip while lying down on the road as the traffic drove by. Embarrassed as I was I have to remove my shoes before I can unclip by
hand. A few concerns motorist stop to see if I need your help, luckily I did not and thank them. Even luckier no damage to the bike minus getting some dirty in the pedals.
Just bought clipless pedals, just fell off my bike. I un-clipped my non-lead foot and sub-consciously leaned to my left, lesson learned.
Nice bike
I don't agree that you should stop and put your foot on the kerb. That leaves you very close to the pavement when the lights turn green and any cars will zoom past you too close for you to safely get moving again. I prefer maintaining my road position 1 metre from the kerb. But then again I don't use clipless yet so if it really is a lot easier then maybe I'll end up doing it too...
I fully agree, moving to the side of the road and "standing" on the kerb suggests to traffic that you've moved out of traffic and have effectively parked up. I would expect any cyclist in this position to indicate that they were then moving back out from a parked position and into the flow of traffic.
Look at those Garmin Vectors! Sweeet!
I'm having problems clipping out. I've set the pedal tension to the lowest and it still feels too tight. I've practiced clipping out stationary, with one cleat/regular shoe, rode in a parking lot. Practiced, practiced, practiced. The cleat seems to have move a bit because I'm violently clipping out. I can only clip out on the down stroke. Is that bad? Would a little grease on the contact points help? Or should I just wear the cleat in more?
You're probably set, but for the benefit of whoever reads this later: Tension on lowest can still be different from pedal to pedal. For example, on PD-T8000 it's easier than on PD-M8000. Built for a different purpose. Then, there's at least two kinds of cleats for SPD, the 51 and the 56. The latter have multi-release that is easier to grok for beginners.
I just installed Shimano PM-22 click on pedals...this way for in the city use I can use normal pedals and if I want to do long distance I can use click shoes
What is the bit you have attached to the crank arms? (besides the pedals obviously.) Is that your bike from the Cervelo Test Team season?
Those are Garmin Vector pedals - they're power meters that attach at the pedals. The bike is (I think) the one from Daniel's time at Cervélo, yes.
Just fell like that a couple of hours ago 🙈🤣 , first time using clipless 😅😅😅
Very good video...and funny! You need to practice your bean bag target.
For practice I used one cleat and another normal shoe [+ adapter] until I became confident
what if we drive in the middle of the road do I put bolth down or do I track stand
Yes we do ride on the correct side! (Left)
I like sod mtb clipless pedals cuz they are easiest for me but I have the most trouble trying to use speedplay clipless pedals
hahaha the correct side of the road:') Yes England!
Happend to me 2 times. I brake at traffic, unclip right leg and fall down on left side. (I don’t know how or why it happend) Both times I hurt same point of my knee and now the one bone is larger than it was before :/ When you are trying to unclip while crash, it will be serious injury for knee. because at that time first point is your knee which attachs to asphalt
Video on how to ideally fall would be a nice follow up, just in case the worst should happen.
Can GCN do a video on the pro's and con's of different types of pedals?
Sorry forgot my manners, please.
1. Don't unclip both sides. Chances are you won't have any support for when gliding from the saddle.
2. Don't stop on the side of the road. That invites reckless car drivers to suddenly overtake you, risking a collision with you. Middle of the lane it is!
Can you tell a little more about look vs spd pedals? Diffrence, benefits etc. Beginers would be greatfull... : )
greetings from Serbia...
Dzoni Delija having used both, I have no preference on either. Both Shimano and Look are three-bolt pattern cleats, Shimano has a slightly larger platform though. Both have three different cleat float options. It's all down to availability and which one you prefer the look of.
Global Cycling Network Thank you for answer. Have good rides...
Its okay new people to the sport , everybody has once fallen at the traffic lights , yep it may be embarrassing but just look cool.....
So funny but it happens ;p
Not if you use hybrids and are not stupid to use clips when you're going through lights. If you're going to be that stupid and use clips in such a scenario you obviously risk falling over
the correct side hahaha. i am 64 and still prefer staying clipped in and doing a track stand if the ground is fairly level.
Unclipping at or near the top of the pedal stroke, with a bent knee, puts a lot less stress on the knees. Even better, try twisting the heel to the inside, but be careful not to kick it into the rear wheel. This doesn't work for Speedplay.
Hi GCN. I have just bought my first road bike and it has foot holds and straps on the pedal. I don't want to move to cleats yet because I don't feel confident yet. Can you tell me how to properly adjust the pedal straps (as my foot aches on the sole) and maybe suggest affordable cleats that I can move to or the best kind to have for easy unclipping.
Hi Christopher Jenkins. Good question. I'd suggest moving to clipless pedals as soon as you feel comfortable to do so as there are a tonne of benefits. As for affordable cleats; brands like Shimano and Look spec their lower end pedals very well, so I'd take a look at those.
Ok thankyou:) I'll go with these for now then look into it.
In my opinion tow clips are even more dangerous, so i suggest you give a try to clipless. its not that hard. Try them first on mtb on soft grass if you are scared.
this was the first vid i clicked on when i was trying to figure out the new shoes i brought, cannot explain how weird it was to see myself walk in front of the camera (guy with carrier bag)
Mountain bike shoes make walking a whole lot easier, so spd pedals are the only way to go for commuting. Also if you have a last minute unclipping moment, your shoe won't slide off in any direction, causing a fall.
I turned the tension down to minimum and never had a problem. Maybe that’s fine now since I am so weak to deliver more power 😂
Plenty of practice first in a quiet area, preferably away from traffic. Try to avoid riding slowly and doing tight U-truns at the end of a street, that bit needs a lot of balance, it's unlikely that you will do this while riding generally. Get used to it by doing straight, start / stops.
How's your left side Daniel?
Cervelo!!!!
are all spd style pedals compatable with eachother? ive got an old pair of sampsons that i wanna use, but dont wanna order a new pair of shimanos and have to spend more cash on a new set of pedals
No, cleats are specific to the brand of pedals, although third party companies sell cleats too (Wellgo for example make cleats for LOOK pedal which I use)
Gaz, if you are using clip less pedals for the first time, chances are the pedals will be new and stiff, and won't naturally fall with the weight part down. It takes a few hundred miles before they start falling into a convenient position
What size are the pedal shafts 9/16? What size are the pedal shafts 9/16? What size are the pedal shafts 9/16?
The correct side of the road. 😂 1:03
Trying to clip in in normal traffic conditions is very dangerous. When you come to a stop, say at a traffic light, stay clipped in and try to fall onto a smaller pedestrian. If there is no pedestrian there, just go ahead and fall on the cement. Usually there will be someone standing around to get you back on your wheels again, so you don't have to risk clipping in.
I just missed the beanbag myself today. First time in clipless pedals/shoes.
Can't help but laugh at 0:35; something very similar just happened to me, abrasions included. Guess this clipless pedal newbie should have practiced or at least read the directions... Ouch!
I bought the shimano ones with clips one side and normal pedals the other side so I can ride with normal shoes if I need to.
Kinda nervous about the embarrassing moment that everybody apparently gets since it almost happened when I got blown away from the pavement. Not really looking to get squished by a lorry that hasn't seen me in case I haven't recently deleted my browser history.
+Yoda on DMT So? How did it go?
+Maximo Chaio Still haven't deleted my browser history...
But as far as the pedals, they are awkward when you constantly have to clip in and out and I'm concerned about slipping off the other side in normal shoes (I've only used them once though on the day I got them fitted).
But it seems like once you've been on the bike for a while it becomes natural, then once you come off, you have to get used to it again, which is weird.
Are there road bike shoes that i can walk in like the MB ones?
Exustar ones. Compatible with the Look Keo system. But due to the stiff sole on road shoes you'll have a hard time walking anyway. Without practice, that is.
QUESTION!!!! I feel it more comfortable twisting my foot towards the bike to unclip, and I am so used to it that I can't do it away from the bike. Is this a bad thing or is it user-preference?
As long as you can get your feet out it's not a bad thing! I think it's just easier for the majority of people the other way around.
Global Cycling Network Thanks! :3
*serious face* while holding on the post
we want subtitles in spanish
Greetings from Venezuela.
Doesn't it hurt to fall down on the asphalt ?
track standing at intersections is best
I fell 3 times :D
So I'm confused. I'm just buying my first road bike and it doesn't come with pedals.lol I've asked around as to what pedals I should get with the bike and all I get is "it's down to personal preference" but no one explains the difference. For instance what is a clipless pedels? And what is a clipped pedal? What's a platform pedal? What's an SPD pedal? Im so confused!!lol
I'll tell you what a want. I want a pedal I can use with both normal shoes(trainers) and cycling shoes. I want the pedal to be duel side like the mountain bike pedal and not be to bulky. Any suggestions guys would be brilliant. Thanks
TheLastFraudster sounds like you're after a one-sided MTB pedal - something like this: www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-xt-spd-trekking-t780-mtb-pedals/rp-prod67250.
The terminology around pedals is pretty confusing. 'Clipless' pedals or SPD (Shimano's name for them) are pedals that you clip into using cleats on your shoes. They're called clipless because they allowed riders to go without toe clips.
A platform pedal is a flat pedal - one where that you don't clip into.
Global Cycling Network Thank you very much for your response.
I missed the bean bag too!
Vector pedals!!
is mountain bike pedals and cleats compatible for road bike? i purchase a road bike a month ago,i wanted to use mountain bike cleats, shoe and pedal so that i can walk properly, not like a penguin. tnx.
Yeah, that will work no problem.
No, your bike will grow knobby tyres and run off into the forest.
that video din't answer how to unclip, it just answered procedure to prep for unclip and best place to be when unclipped.
Are those like the 5000 dollar Harmon tracking pedal thingies that give you all sorts of info?
I just got triathlon cleats and I find it very hard to unclip. What do I do ?
You should be able to loosen the pedal tension - have a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/xLHA9CzlNe4/v-deo.html
